A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Summer is here and all of us at Hey Rhody couldn’t be more thrilled! We began planning this special issue back when ice scrapers were still in regular rotation. Over steaming cups of hot coffee our editorial planning meetings quickly morphed into musings about the many things we all look forward to during a Rhode Island summer – some annual favorites and some new things to try and explore. In Hey Rhody Summer we’ve got the scoop on local treats from small-batch ice cream and root beer to our own grownup spin on Del’s lemonade. We’ll introduce you to resident artisans working with everything from surfboards to sea glass to sunscreen. We share the low-down on secret beaches along with a round-up of

historic carousels (our state is full of them). Blogger and first-time contributor Patty J takes us on a Rhody Day Trip to Jamestown, and of course, there are festivals, ferry trips, swag for Fido, and so much more! Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and uniquely Rhody summer! Be sure to tag your favorite pics using #HeyRhody and we may use them next year. Editor In Chief

Dress your dog for summer with fun accessories from two local makers Warmer weather means pulling out those shorts and sandals, but what about a wardrobe change for your pet? Alice Nichols of East Providence’s Up Country has been creating dog collars since 1984, and has gone from six to 120 original designs, plus other accessories. Newer to the scene is Melanie Wolfe of Bristol’s Wolfe & Hound Company, who has been creating distinctive dog bandanas since 2017. She prides herself on attention to detail, polishing off each bandana with a wooden logo button sewn on by hand and has her handsome rescue pup Arlo model her collections. Both businesses also make a “pawsitive” impact on animals in need: with each bandana sold, Wolfe & Hound Company donates one to a shelter dog, and Up Country donates a leash and collar to every animal adopted through RISPCA. -Megan Schmit 2019 HEY RHODY SUMMER
BROWSING • SEA GLASS
AQUA ALLURE Capture breezy seaside color with items made locally using beach glass
By Elyse Major
Sure, the official Rhode Island state mineral is Bowenite, but there’s something about beach glass that truly represents the Ocean State. While not as easy to stumble upon as it once was, sea or beach glass might just be that singular instance where something once carelessly discarded has transformed into a thing of beauty. Also known as “mermaid’s tears”, most authentic pieces started humbly as trash: bottles and jars – shattered, pitted, ground, and tumbled smooth over time by water and sand – resulting in perfectly imperfect shapes. The most common shades are muted aquas, blues, and mints, and today, bags of manufactured versions are available to purchase for crafts and decorating. But whether prospected along the shoreline or bought in bulk, these jagged gems offer a tangible slice of summer that lasts all year long. It is no wonder that artisans around the state are inspired to showcase these coastal treasures in their work.

BROWSING • CAROUSELS ROUND-UP
THE CAROUSEL WALTZ With six historic merry-go-rounds still in operation, Rhode Island preserves a timeless pleasure
Charles Looff immigrated to the United States in 1870, and he spent decades building roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and carousels. He was a master carver and crafted each horse by hand. Only around 50 such carousels were ever constructed, and two of them are still running in Rhode Island. Like rock-skipping and stargazing, carousels have entertained whole generations, and they never get old, no matter how many tokens you buy. We’re lucky to have preserved so many vintage carousels in the Ocean State. Every time you give that mare a whirl, just imagine how many thousands of people have saddled up before you. Here’s where you can rustle them up.
Carousel Village One of the gems of Roger Williams Park, Carousel Village is the perfect bookend for a zoo visit. Not only is the carousel a delight, but kids can also run around the playground, stroll in the nearby Japanese Garden, or ride a pony. There’s even a miniature bouncehouse. Easton’s Beach Carousel Easton’s Beach is one of Newport’s most low-maintenance hang-outs: Beach-combing is free, there’s a great snack bar, and the Save the Bay Exploration Center. Finally, there’s the carousel, which started operating in the 1950s and even survived a hurricane. Ride to the rhythm of Disney standards. Easton’s Beach, Newport. Facebook: Easton’s Beach
Atlantic Beach Carousel Built by Herschell Spillman in 1915, the Atlantic Beach Carousel is nestled in the middle of the action: Rides, games, and an arcade make Misquamicut a favorite summer haunt, but the age-old carousel is its century-old anchor. Atlantic Beach, Westerly. AtlanticBeachPark.com

Crescent Park Carousel Crescent Park draws thousands of visitors to Riverside each summer. The lawns and paths offer a gorgeous view of the Providence River, and you can stock up on fried seafood at Blount’s Clam Shack. Then there’s the local Looff Carousel, a historic landmark from 1895 boasting 61 horses, one camel, and chances to reach for the brass ring! Crescent Park, Riverside. CrescentParkCarousel.org
Slater Park Looff Carousel Galloping horses, a giraffe and lion, and even three dogs. This Looff carousel was originally built for a carnival in upstate New York, but it was relocated to Slater Park in 1910. The carousel is undergoing renovations this year, but it should be open by August. Slater Park, Pawtucket. Facebook: Looff Carousel at Slater Park
Flying Horse Carousel Why is it called “Flying Horse”? Because the horse sculptures are actually suspended from chains instead of stuck on the traditional poles. A rare breed of carousel, this Watch Hill staple is the oldest example in the country. The site dates back to 1879, when the carousel was rotated by an actual horse. Watch Hill, Westerly. Black Mold Growth on Roof Sheathing
When Was the Last Time You Looked In Your Attic? Checking your attic at least once a year is an important part of property maintenance. Many property owners only become aware of attic mold when an energy efficiency consultant, realtor, or home inspector visits the attic and sees it growing there. It’s really easy to detect, but removing it requires professional mold remediation expertise from a company like Single Source. Remember: Mold is not always black. It can also appear brown, white, grey, or as a fuzzy growth. And if left unchecked, can pose a health risk and may lead to the deterioration of your roof or building structure.
Check your attic today and call us if you see mold. We’ll come by and provide a free remediation estimate to qualified homeowners. It’s
also possible that this cost may be covered by your homeowners insurance policy, so don’t delay.

Say “aloha” to Rhode Island’s custom surfboard makers
By Robert Isenberg Photography by Wolf Matthewson
Surfing is freedom. After all, the ocean belongs to everybody. The culture is chill and welcomes just about anybody. Gear is reasonable – a couple hundred bucks for a rookie longboard – and may last for years. You can use the same rash guard all summer, or for summers on end. And then there’s the feeling – the ebb and flow of the water, the rush of an oncoming wave, the pop-up, the extended arms, the rush of salty air as a comber propels you along its arc. At the heart of surfing is the board itself, and nothing expresses freedom like those lustrous shapes and myriad decorations. Surfboards come in all styles; you can browse length, color, and number of fins. You can pick material and weight, color and pattern. More
than any glove or racket, the board becomes a surfer’s closest friend. For many, it’s a work of art that you happen to stand on. This is why surfboard makers are so conspicuously cool. We talked with three Rhode Island-based crafters who make their living – or much of their living – shaping raw materials into professional wave-riding equipment. New England is home to some of the most diehard surfers in the country, and the market for personalized boards is surprisingly steady. Here’s how these mavericks ply their trade.
David Levy LEVY SURF DESIGNS
THE START David is the true pioneer of board-making in Rhode Island. He’s been hitting waves since the Golden Age of surfing in the early 1960s, and he spent many years as co-owner of the Watershed Surf Shop in Wakefield; his business partner was local surfing legend Peter Pan. In 1976, he wanted a particular shape and size for his own use. “I decided to cut up a longboard,” David recalls. “I tried to make a shortboard out of it. It came out all right, but I couldn’t ride it. It came out too narrow and too thin. But you gotta start somewhere.”
LESSONS LEARNED David watched other surfboard makers at work, but he earned most of his skills through patience and tenacity. He knew boards intimately, of course; in stages, David discovered surfing, winter surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding before most East Coasters had even heard of them. Yet mastering the precise cutting, sanding, and glassing techniques was a painstaking process. “There was no YouTube back then,” David says with a chuckle. “Nobody would tell you anything, either. It was like a secret.” Today, Levy Surf Designs is based in Narragansett, and for many years Levy was the only full-time custom surfboard maker in the region.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE Over the decades, David has seen surfboard design evolve. He says they’re lighter and more maneuverable now, and that retro designs can feel like “Model Ts” on the water. He’s lost track of how many thousands of boards he’s made since founding LSD nearly 30 years ago, and he also dedicates much of his time to repairing boards, which can crack or shatter on undersea rocks. A custom board caters to a surfer’s particular style. “You get what you want,” he says. “It’s locally made, for the conditions here.” LevySurfDesigns.Wordpress.com
SO YOU WANT TO GO SURFING
How to overcome imposter syndrome and hit the waves this summer Surfing ain’t easy – and starting out is the hardest part. Longtime surfers tend to be athletic and cocksure, and it’s easy to feel intimidated. But it’s also a big-hearted community, and newbies are always welcome. Here are some easy ways to get started.
Take a Lesson
Practice Makes Perfect
Narragansett is packed with surf instructors. “Reach out to someone in your area, someone you’re comfortable approaching,” says Neil Toracinta. “Develop a good understanding of surfing etiquette and baseline ocean safety.”
Any sport takes time. And if you run out of warm-weather months, don’t worry – thermal wetsuits enable surfers to keep practicing all winter.
Rent Gear After a few lessons, you can usually rent a surfboard for $30-40 per day. This is an affordable way to test different types and decide whether you love it enough to invest.
Find Your Comfort Level “Start with a soft-topped longboard,” says David Levy. “Mostly you’re going to go out on tiny little waves.” Find the right beach, with manageable breakers and lifeguards on-hand. David recommends Narragansett, but South County has many other surfable beaches as well. “Any place with no rocks,” David adds.
TORA SURFBOARDS
THE START Born and raised in Newport, Neil Toracinta grew up skateboarding – and those rides often ended at the beach, so surfing was a natural extension. “As an outsider looking in,” says Neil, “you wouldn’t assume surfing is a common thing in the northeast. But it’s a lot bigger than most people probably think.” During his junior year in high school, he became interested in woodworking and manual construction. “That piqued my curiosity, into how surfboards are made.” He dissected an old longboard, ripping off the fiberglass and reusing its foam. “I tried to glass it myself,” he says, “and it went horribly. It was tacky, but it floated. And I still have it.”
LESSONS LEARNED At 18, Neil had to do a senior project. “They gave us really, really vague guidelines,” he says. “I chose making surfboards, because that was something I wanted to do anyway. And to get school credit to do it? That was just awesome.” He made three or four boards, using “complete trial and error.” After college, Neil spent a few years working for corporate America, but he kept making boards, and friends started requesting them. At 26, he started building full-time. “If I didn’t do this now,” he realized, “I was just going to take on more responsibilities.”
TRICKS OF THE TRADE “Making boards in the Northeast forces you to be a master of all areas,” says Neil, who manages every aspect of the business himself and maintains a production schedule of about three to four weeks per order. Last year, he created more than 200 boards. “I have full control over every step, and it’s a challenge that I enjoy. It’s literally a lifetime of learning. I’m very happy with the quality, but you’ve never mastered it, really.” ToraSurfboards.com
SPIRARE SURFBOARDS THE START Growing up in Baltimore, Kevin had easy access to Ocean City, Maryland, a surfing capital. The sport was just a summer hobby until he moved to Rhode Island to study architecture and fine arts at RISD. By 2002, he was an enthusiastic surfer, but he frowned at the polyurethane used in commercial boards. “I realized they’re terrible materials,” says Kevin. “They’re very toxic. They’ll stay in a landfill for 10,000 years. I wanted a more sustainable alternative.”
LESSONS LEARNED Kevin worked for an architect for several years, but he made a handful of wood-based surfboards on the side, mostly for friends. “Once I started developing the greener approach, I felt a need to expose it to more people and change the industry a bit,” he recalls. He started going to trade shows and met industry leaders from California. “There’s a huge amount of design skill that came into play. A lot of stuff I had learned at RISD – ways of approaching a design problem.” He was also confident in the value of wood, as pre-Columbian Hawaiians rode wooden surfboards for centuries, and this was the norm until the late 1950s.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE
The Spirare name is derived from the Latin “to expire”. Kevin says his practice of recycling ocean debris for the making of the fins on his board is his way of “breathing” new life into the surfboard industry.
Since 2010, Kevin has made more than 500 boards. Unlike his peers, Kevin couples this work with design-build projects, mostly constructing and remodeling houses. He also recently became a father, and he chuckles at his sleep deprivation this past month. “It’s tough,” says Kevin. “Rhode Island is not the ideal location to start a [custom surfboard] business. There’s this stigma in New England; if a board isn’t made in Southern California, it’s not as good. But part of being sustainable is to make them super durable. And I like making things.” SpirareSurfboards.com

READY. SET. ADVENTURE! The Go-To Guide to Rhody’s Best Season
Photography by Hillary Block
By Robert Isenberg Summer in the Ocean State. Sunny beaches. Blooming hedges. Del’s lemonade at a picnic table. Has a population ever savored its warmer months more than Rhode Islanders? For three perfect months, we shed the cold and overcast, and we spend every available moment in the open air. Time is short. Life is short. You want to put those weekends to good use. Here are 100-plus activities from across the state, all best enjoyed in the sultry mid-year. These are by no means the only activities and events you can pursue this summer, but it’s a handy smorgasbord if you’re suffering from option paralysis. And it’s a region-by-region rundown of what’s happening around the state, which empowers you to get the most bang for each summer day. Whatever you do, have fun out there. This is Rhody’s time to shine.

EXPLORING SECRET BEACHES • RHODY DAY TRIP • FERRY ROUND-UP • NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL • SCUBA Block Island Organics sunblock is ocean and reef friendly, and non-toxic. Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 $19.99. Photo courtesy of Block Island Organics
BEACH READY
Block Island Organics makes fun in the sun safe There are a few staples when packing your beach bag: A towel, a pair of sunglasses, a cold drink, maybe a good book to read, and – arguably the most important item – sunscreen. The Ocean State is the perfect place to produce an original line of SPF. Co-founders Kelly Hsiao and Will von Bernuth of Block Island Organics have created safe, effective, affordable, and non-toxic sun and skincare products that cater to their motto “Play Smart, Play Safe.” Find moisturizers, cleansers, and night creams in addition to their natural mineral sunscreen. SECRET BEACHES Get away from your summer routine – and the crowds – by exploring some of the state’s under-the-radar spots By John Taraborelli
Think you’re a true Rhode Island beach bum? Quick quiz: the state has more than 100 public and private beaches – how many have you visited? How many can you even name? Thought so. This summer, go beyond the beaches you know and explore the many under-appreciated miles of coastline that make this the Ocean State. Here are some faves:

HEY RHODY SUMMER 2019
HeyRhody.com
SOUTH COUNTY Primarily billed as a fishing area, Narragansett’s Camp Cronin is also popular with bird watchers and boasts breathtaking views of Block Island Sound. Ocean Road, Narragansett. No admission or parking fee. Westerly’s Sandy Point was once an extension of Napatree Point (which also has a beach that could be considered “secret”), but became an “island” in the Hurricane of ’38. It’s mostly a nature preserve but does offer a public beach. Getting there requires a boat and a permit from Stonington, CT, which claims ownership of five of the island’s 35 acres. North Kingstown’s Calf Pasture Point Beach is one of the most pristine and deserted in the state. Nestled in the Quonset area, it’s accessible from the Davisville Bike Path and is more popular with wildlife than people. Off the Davisville Bike Path, North Kingstown. No admission or parking fee. Though it’s mostly home to a private club, Quonochontaug (or “Quonnie”) Beach has a small public parking lot, so get there early. It’s located on a narrow stretch between the salt pond of the same name and the Block Island Sound. It’s remote, but worth the effort. Sand Trail, Charlestown. No admission or parking fee.
Fogland Beach in Tiverton

THE ISLANDS Cast off as unwanted by the Newport elites at the private Bailey’s Beach, ”Reject’s Beach” isn’t even an official beach. It’s a small strip of beachfront that’s separated from its ritzy neighbor by a fence and a rope that goes out into the water. There’s no parking, and it’s generally only accessible by foot or bike, but lesser nobility are welcome. Off the Cliff Walk. No admission or parking fee. Jamestown’s Mackerel Cove Town Beach is located on the “beaver tail” that gives Beavertail State Park its name. Though light on amenities, it’s a relatively tranquil spot popular with families. Beavertail Road, Jamestown. Pay to park, but no admission. Occupying the same peninsula at the southeastern end of Aquidneck Island as Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, Middletown’s Third Beach (aka Navy Beach) is small and relatively quiet, with shallow water
and minimal waves. Pets welcome after 5pm. Third Beach Road, Middletown. Pay to park, but no admission. Teddy’s Beach in Portsmouth is one of the few that’s pet friendly, which for some will make up for the lack of amenities. Find it near the northern tip of Aquidneck Island, directly across the water from Tiverton’s Grinnell’s Beach, itself worthy of under appreciated status. Park Avenue, Portsmouth. No admission or parking fee. Perched out at the end of one of the two extensions of land that enclose Block Island’s Great Salt Pond, Charleston Beach is not easy to get to and has no amenities, but it offers respite from the crowds and peaceful views of the boats entering New Harbor. Bring your own supplies and enjoy one of Rhode Island’s – nay, the world’s – last great unspoiled places. Off Champlin Road, Block Island. No admission or parking fee.
EAST BAY Little Compton’s Goosewing Beach is a narrow spit of land between open ocean and a coastal pond that’s adjacent to South Shore Beach. It’s also a historic landmark and Nature Conservancy preserve for rare birds. Off South Shore Road, Little Compton. Pay to park at South Shore Beach, but no admission. Tiverton’s Fogland Beach occupies a small peninsula that juts out into the Sakonnet River, creating a small cove on its north side that’s great for nature lovers or families with children. It also has a nature conservation area. 3 Rod Way off Fogland Road. Pay to park, but no admission. Warren Town Beach offers shallow water that’s good for kids (as well as a playground) and is right next to Burr’s Hill Park, providing picnicking and recreational opportunities. Off Water Street, Warren. No admission or parking fee. Almost more of a park than a beach, Union Street Beach is just off the main drag in Downtown Bristol. There’s a grassy plot with benches and picnic tables leading down to a small area for swimming and sunbathing. Bring a cooler and watch the boats go by. Union Street, Bristol. No admission or parking fee.

EXPLORING • RHODY DAY TRIP
ISLAND FEELS Patty J takes on Jamestown By Patty J Sure, you’re probably already well-acquainted with the lighthouse, water views, and the walking trails at Beavertail. Or maybe you’ve enjoyed dinner and drinks on the patio at Trattoria Simpatico. (We actually had Thanksgiving there one year and it was fab!) Well, there’s even more to adore about this charming, nine-square-mile, mostly island in Newport County. Here are five must-stops:
1. East Ferry Market & Deli The sandwiches at this spot are outstanding! Dig into your order and do some people watching on the deck out front that overlooks. 2. The Jamestown Windmill in the Windmill Hill Historic District Go for a drive past the farms and historic Quaker meeting house and suddenly it’s helloooo, Holland! Dating back to 1787, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in the late 1970s, the Windmill has become Insta Famous, attracting a variety of professional and amateur photogs from RI and beyond. There’s also an incredible view of the Newport Bridge from the back. All in all, a terrific photo opp. 3. Village Hearth Bakery & Café Go for a delicious latte, freshly baked breads, or their special Saturday and Sun-
day night-only wood-fired pizzas that people have been known to line up for. 4. Fort Wetherill State Park Channel your inner style blogger or Madonna circa her Borderline video and style arc from back in 1986 at the former American Revolutionary Fort. Graffiti for days, and then some. Add your own a la Keith Haring (joke) or bring along a friend to take a ton of snaps of you at the area that’s also been deemed “the Devil’s Playground” by some (There’s talk it’s haunted by the ghost of a dog that dates back to its Revolutionary days.). 5. Tallulah’s Taqueria at The Shack Holy guacamole! Yes, it’s true; one of your favorite Providence hotspots does set up shop in the Dutch Harbor Boat Yard from Memorial through Columbus Day. So, now you can tuck into your Tallulah’s tacos without having to leave JT.

EXPLORING • FERRY ROUND-UP
SEAS THE DAY Skip traffic and travel by water to your favorite New England getaways By Megan Schmit
One of the great things about Rhode Island is the ocean. It makes for unbeatable views, day trips, and water activities, but it also means you’re not stuck taking a train, bus, car, or bike – the ocean is your form of transport, too. Why not mix up that summer road trip with a ferry ride to your favorite coastal destinations?
Martha’s Vineyard Ferry
Newport Jamestown Ferry
Providence Newport Ferry
Venture to Martha’s Vineyard, that summer haven known for dining, shopping, beaches and farmland, and the setting for the movie Jaws. Lounge on the sundeck or in air conditioned comfort and make it to the scenic island in under two hours. The best part? Beating Cape Cod traffic en route and catching the sunset on the ride back to Quonset. Depart from Quonset, VineyardFastFerry.com
While Newport and Jamestown aren’t far apart via the Claiborne Pell/ Newport Bridge, there’s something special about taking the trip by water. The ferry service makes multiple stops in Narragansett Bay, including Perrotti Park, Ann Street Pier, Fort Adams, Rose Island, and Jamestown Village. This summer, restored vessel Coastal Queen, will join the fleet. Depart from Jamestown, JamestownNewportFerry.com
Seastreak offers ferry service between Providence and Newport for commuters and travelers alike – with a much better view than the one outside your car window. Featuring multiple decks and an indoor cabin, and room for “bikes, boards, or beagles”! Plus, they just added a stop in Bristol. Depart from Providence, Seastreak.com
Block Island Ferry Believe it or not, many Rhode Islanders have yet to experience the beauty of Block Island. Check a visit off your summer bucket list or return to this idyllic spot less than an hour away. Take it slow with the traditional ferry (55 minutes), or get to the fun faster by taking the hi-speed (30 minutes). Depart from Narragansett and Newport, BlockIslandFerry.com

EXPLORING • NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL
ALL THAT JAZZ Newport’s famed music festival returns with an eclectic lineup that defies traditional definitions of jazz By Ken Abrams
The Grand Daddy of all music festivals, Newport Jazz, returns to Fort Adams State Park this summer with a stellar lineup over the weekend of August 2-4. The story begins in 1954, when Producer George Wein was hired by Newport socialites Elaine and Louis Lorillard to put on a summer festival in what was then a sleepy summer retreat for the rich and famous. Today, it’s a model for the music industry and a destination for jazz fans worldwide. Whether you’re an aficionado or entrant into the world of jazz, the Festival is a great way to experience an original American art form at an event steeped in music lore. Traditional jazz artists are well represented, but the Festival is also known to feature exciting young talent, including many who cross over into other musical genres. In fact, the 2019 lineup might leave you wondering, “This is jazz?” (The answer: absolutely!) Here’s what to expect if you plan on attending:
JAZZ LEGENDS
CROSSOVER ARTISTS
Headliner Herbie Hancock is a genre superstar who earned his chops playing with Miles Davis. The veteran keyboardist has been in the business for over 50 years fronting his own bands, both acoustic and electric. Other big names to look for include the Ron Carter Trio, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and saxophone upstart Kamasi Washington, who recently recorded with Kendrick Lamar and Chaka Khan.
The zenith of the 2019 Festival may very well be Tank and the Bangas, a breakout act at last year’s Folk Festival. The New Orleans band is pure energy on stage, blending jazz, folk, hip-hop, spoken word, and more. Other artists who don’t fall into the traditional jazz classification include Common, who emerged out of hip-hop but crosses all boundaries, and Grammy winner Thundercat, who recently recorded with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald.
WOMEN OF JAZZ A model of diversity and inclusion, women musicians comprise nearly half of all Festival performers. Highlights include event veteran Dianne Reeves and Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae. Don’t forget to check out Women of the World, an eclectic a Capella ensemble with members from Japan, Italy, India, Canada, and Haiti.
THE EVENING CONCERT For a more upscale experience, head to the evening concert at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Friday August 2, led this year by Jon Batiste, late show bandleader and Festival favorite. The show is billed as “Jon Batiste and Friends,” so expect some surprises.

FESTIVAL SECRETS Those in-the-know head to the Friday show. The lineup is especially strong and the crowds lighter. All that changes over the weekend. To really be part of the scene, our advice is to leave early and plan accordingly. Chill and enjoy the good vibes. Finally, although it’s tempting to relax in the summer sun at the Fort Stage, be sure to walk around the grounds and catch acts at all four stages.

EXPLORING • SCUBA DIVING
UNDER THE SEA
Rhode Island scuba diving may be cold and cloudy, but there’s a lot to see down there
By Robert Isenberg “If you dive in New England, you can dive anywhere,” says David Labrecque, owner of the East Bay Dive Center in Warren. David should know: He first tried scuba diving in 1977, and he became a certified instructor six years later. David has explored many ocean floors, but his favorite is his native Rhode Island. “It’s what you make of it. If you really look closely, you can see a lot of small stuff going on. You look at a rocky area, you’ll see crabs, juvenile fish, lobsters....” Scuba snobs often badmouth North Atlantic waters, especially if they’ve swam in the crystal-clear Caribbean. But as cloudy as it can be, Rhody shores are littered with wonders. “I always liked history – looking for artifacts, wreck-diving, that kind of stuff,” says David, who grew up fishing and snorkeling. “There are hundreds and hundreds of shipwrecks in Rhode Island. A lot of people don’t realize that.” East Bay is one of several diving companies in the state (see sidebar), and almost anyone can learn scuba (or SCUBA, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) and get an Open Water certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Lessons typically start in swimming pools, as divers learn basic maneuvering and emergency procedures. From there, they brave the salty sea. Places like Fort Adams boast gentle tides and surprising visibility. David used to work for the Gob Shop, the custom apparel store located next door. In the mid-1980s, owner Robert Estrella offered David the unused storefront for his diving business. Today, David’s team trains 70-80 divers a year. The shop has glass cases full of mementos – bottles, pipes, sea glass – which have been retrieved from the depths. New England divers may need insulated wetsuits and well-wiped masks, but it’s worth the effort to explore such seabeds. “We also do night dives,” he adds. “It’s a whole different world at night.”

GO WITH THE FLOAT
A summer favorite with a local twist Froth overflowing and dripping down the sides of a chilled glass, cherry perched precariously on a bed of whipped cream, and that sweet, licorice scent of root beer. An ice cream float is a quintessential summer treat, and we like ours with root beer, which happens to be produced by our very own Yacht Club Soda. To make your own Rhody root beer float is simple: Place two scoops of vanilla ice cream from Rhody Fresh in a tall float glass, pour in the root beer, and top with a dollop of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry if desired. Now that’s what we call a sweet summer. -Megan Schmit Photography by Brandon Harmon

DINING • FISH TACOS
SEAFOOD STREET FOOD
Fresh and unique takes on fish tacos By Lauren Vella, Photography by Brandon Harmon
There’s no doubt that fish tacos are a crowd pleaser. This light yet filling Mexican street food is perfect for the warmer months. The symphony of textures and flavors screams summer. From the bright tang and crunch of the pickled vegetables to the briney sea flavor of fish, each component comes together in a culinary crescendo after just one bite. Fortunately for us, Rhode Island eateries have put their unique spin on the dish, substituting other scrumptious proteins and combinations for the typical deep-fried cod. Here are just a few different takes on fish tacos from around the state.
DINING • FISH TACOS EL FUEGO MEXICAN GRILL This little Wakefield restaurant puts a Carribean twist on the fish creation that lives up to their name. The Caribbean Fish Taco brings the heat using fresh cod that is covered in jerk seasoning, topped with the standard lettuce, tomato, cheese, and finished with a sprinkle of cilantro. Wakefield, ElFuegoMexicanGrill.com
MATUNUCK OYSTER BAR French/Japanese/Mexican/Americanseafood bistro? Who cares about the dish’s origin! The fusion of all of these cuisines comes together in one Tuna Tartare Taco at the famous Rhode Island seafood spot. Sushi-grade diced tuna is served in a taco shell with avocado, tomato salsa, cilantro, chipotle cream, jicama slaw, and ancho chili dust. Wakefield, RhodyOysters.com.
TORTILLA FLATS Many go to Tortilla Flats for their popular pitchers of maragaritas, but the Tex Mex eatery on the corner of Hope and Olney Streets on Providence’s East Side is serving up marinated catfish tacos. Dive straight in to this dish, and taste the feline-looking fish sauteed with red onion, white wine, and garlic, topped with lettuce, tomato, and chipotle ranch sauce. Providence, TortillaFlatsRI.com
PROVIDENCE OYSTER BAR Swordfish is an elegant, meaty seafood normally used to class up a wedding menu or a restaurant repertoire. Yet, Providence Oyster Bar has made this fish a bit more humble, blackening their catch in their Blackened Swordfish Tacos and serving it with shredded cabbage, chipotle aioli, avocado, and cucumber-lime salsa. Providence, ProvOysterBar.com
CHOMP KITCHEN AND DRINKS Coconut shrimp is a cruise ship menu classic, usually served with a sweet chili sauce for dipping. However, Chomp takes this tired appetizer and gives it a little oomph. The restaurant’s Thai Coconut Shrimp Tacos are an Asian/Mexican collaboration, with cilantro, bok choy, pickled chilies, and a red thai curry aioli. Warren, ChompRI.com
AMIGOS TAQUERIA Y TEQUILA Oysters are a New England summer staple, and Amigos incorporates the regional shellfish into their tacos with some traditional Mexican spices. The Ancho Chile Spiced Fried Oyster Tacos are packed into a blue corn tortilla and topped with julienned papaya and cucumber. Westerly, AmigosRI.com

LEVELED UP LEMONADE A boozy twist on a Rhode Island classic Lauren Vella
It goes without saying, the summer months in Rhode Island can get HOT. When the temperature and the humidity is high, there’s no better way to stay cool than spiking your drink to create what we’ve dubbed a Del’s Mojito. Minty, sweet, and cold, this refresher will take fun in the sun to the next level. We’ve taken a Rhode Island classic and added a boozy twist.
MOJITO (Makes 1 drink) INGREDIENTS: * 1 cup of Del’s Frozen Lemonade * 1 double shot of Thomas Tew White Rum * 1 sprig of mint, leaves removed * Fresh mint and lemon/lime wedges for garnish DIRECTIONS: 1. In a blender, combine the frozen lemonade and rum and blend until liquor and lemonade is combined, but does not become too melted. 2. While the frozen lemonade and rum blends together, muddle the mint with a drink muddler or mortar and pestle to release the oils of the herb. 3. Combine the muddled mint and lemonade mixture in a tall glass, stir, and garnish with a mint top and lemon wedge on the side.

ASK THE EXPERT : LANDSCAPING Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services has a 60 yard blower truck that can lay down mulch in less than an hour
Mulch Ma de Easy Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services installs mulch in an innovative and efficient way Alicia and Nick Donadio have a unique business: their Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services blows mulch into garden beds, saving homeowners and landscapers countless hours of work. In fact, they’re the only operation in the state that has a 60 yard Express Blower Truck. We recently caught up with Alicia to learn more about their innovative mulch service.
How does blown-in mulch work? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. When the truck arrives at the property, long hoses are pulled from the truck around the property to install the mulch directly into the beds at the depth the customer requests. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. Normally, the process involves bringing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow over to the beds one at a time. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work. Our process is significantly faster and more convenient. What types of properties do you service? Can you do small properties? If mulch needs to be installed, we can do it! We service both commercial and residential properties throughout Rhode Island. And yes, we can install our products on smaller properties with a 10 yard minimum. What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We have all kinds of mulches: brown, black, pine,
cedar, and more. Many are all-natural, some are color enhanced or organically enhanced. Our other services include Soil and Compost applications, Terraseeding, Certified Playground Chip installations and Erosion Controls like Silt Sock. What are the benefits of mulch? Mulch is not only a fast way to make your property look its best, it’s also very beneficial to your soil and plants. It helps suppress weeds, retains moisture, adds nutrients, and moderates soil temperature. How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? Well, every property is unique; it really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour. What do you say to skeptics? We have always told potential customers, “Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year. Once they see us pull that off fast and efficiently, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.”

LAST LOOK
SPREAD YOUR WINGS In May, something exciting happened in Upper South Providence. Stroke by stroke, a giant pair of multi-colored wings appeared on an unassuming brick wall near Trinity Square. During the installation, nearly 100 curious passers-by stopped to ask questions. Within the first five minutes of it being complete, someone paused to snap a photo. In less than four hours, the first posts appeared on social media. Say hello to The Avenue Concept’s (TAC) latest mural, Rhode Island’s first “Selfie Wall.” “I have been playing and experimenting with selfie walls for a few years...but this was the first painted on a public wall,” says Yarrow Thorne, TAC’s founder and executive director. He partnered
with artist James Mustin, and the two collaborated to brainstorm a design that would complement the location and make the most impact. They settled on a set of angel wings to frame the existing window, with each colorful, patterned feather having “its own story.” The Selfie Wall is tucked in an area with less foot traffic, an intentional choice since Yarrow hopes to “use public art to draw people to this space.” Part of the fun is finding it; TAC hints that it’s in the general area between Trinity Square and their Cultural Corridor installation. When you do, take a pic like we did and tag @avenuepvd to share your story. TheAvenueConcept.org, and TAC’s Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. -Megan Schmit
