A VISION FOR THE
FROM THE DEVELOPERS OF
THE VILLAGE OF PROVIDENCE
Future
It’s hard to imagine a time when our thriving community was just an idea in the minds a team of dedicated visionaries, planners and developers. Yet, here, the effortless movement of pedestrians and vehicles, the large, shady trees that line streets and woodlands, and avenues whose homes each have their own authentic character were all born of a singular—and incredible—vision.
The developers who set out to create The Village of Providence commissioned visionary designers, Andres Duany and Elizabeth Platter-Zyberk of DPZ & Company to create the foundational plan for the community. Andres and Elizabeth had designed the highly acclaimed and beloved town of Seaside, Florida, one of the first authentic new towns to be built in the US in the past 50 years. When the plan is right, magic happens. Today, it’s apparent that their work and the dedication of developers, Todd and David Slyman has graced Huntsville, Alabama, with that same sort of stardust at The Village of Providence.

THE ART OF PLACEMAKING What’s makes a place ‘great’? It’s a place that touches the hearts, minds and possibly even the spirits of the people who use or visit them. Good places can move people, just as music, art, writing, or drama does. Think of some of America’s most iconic cities - New York, San Francisco. They’re made up of many different neighborhoods, but the city, as a whole, has its own soul. “They’re very walkable places. Every neighborhood has its own little look and feel,” says David. “...and they’re all still relevant today.”

THE NEXT NEW ‘TIMELESS’ THING
The beauty of a true town is that it never stops growing and evolving. A new Meeting House is underway here and will offer modern, innovative spaces for fitness, yoga, gatherings and more, set within a stunning architectural design. The Village of Providence has always balanced the new with the tried-and-true in every amenity created, and every home built here. Developer, David Slyman puts it this way: “The insides of our buildings change over time. The outsides are timeless.”
THIS MOMENT IN TIME Can ‘timeless’ change with the times? Indeed, our guiding principles of Traditional Neighborhood Design allow us to do just that, quite gracefully. The Village of Providence has been especially well suited to the situation we find ourselves in today. With more people working from home, living in a place that lets you take a nature walk on your lunch break or bicycle to the Town Center to satisfy a 3pm latte craving is nothing short of amazing.

This is an exciting moment in time—new families moving in, new homes being built, in this great place. We welcome you to visit and experience it.

al fresco It’s All About
Whether it’s a gracious sleeping porch on an 1800’s mansion or a folding chair on the rooftop of an apartment building, the human desire to enjoy life ‘in the open air’ has always been with us. These days, outdoor living is no longer an escape from indoors, it’s a spectacular addition to it. The homes at The Village of Providence are especially well suited to outdoor spaces, by design. Our principles of Traditional Neighborhood Design extend living and community spaces naturally. Thoughtful landscaping and lush, natural areas throughout our neighborhoods let homes gracefully flow from indoors to out, too. Spending time al fresco is good for our well-being year round. Elegant patio spaces, porches and outdoor rooms are the canvas upon which some of the loveliest memories are made. After all, the very best part of outdoor living is enjoying it with friends and family. We’ve assembled a few of our favorite styles and spaces for outdoor living. Explore and be inspired to go al fresco!

Subtle, natural hues and sunny views
When you think ‘great outdoors’, we often think of wide-open spaces. This tucked away porch offers plenty of space for breezes and sunlight but also creates the perfect corner for a cozy retreat. Natural stone blends with cedar shake siding and refined rattan seating to create an inviting space with serene hues and sophisticated style.

Let there be light! (and breezes, too) Generous skylights illuminate this classic brick sun porch, letting in light and warmth by day, and spectacular starry views at night. Overstuffed cushions in airy blues and beige complement the formality of the brickwork floor. Fans are fab for staying breezy during the sunniest of Sunday afternoon naps on the porch.

Savor the luxury of an outdoor kitchen The kitchen might be the ‘heart of the home’ but the newest outdoor kitchen and grill trends have our hearts racing to take the party outside. Gourmet stainless appliances are anchored with substantial stonework. Horizontal wood in warm tones is a sophisticated take on privacy. Add a built-in herb garden terrace and enjoy fresh-picked flavor every time you grill.

Stone fireplaces are becoming a favorite in the luxury backyard market. It’s not just the warmth that people are warming up to. This magnificent evolution of the ‘fire pit’ is a stunning focal point and a natural gathering area. We love the combo of stacked stone and this natural wood ceiling that soars. Add ample seating and you have irresistible al fresco living.

A true ‘neighborhood restaurant’ has a certain magic about it. It’s the place to stop in for a good lunch, a brew at the end of a big week, or brunch on a bright Sunday. The Village of Providence was designed around ideas like these. And now, there’s a new Grille in town that is becoming the neighborhood restaurant you’ll love to love.
Open this spring, Grille on Main is in the very heart of The Village of Providence’s Town Center. The creative forces behind Grille on Main, Jimmy and Suzan Boyce, are no strangers to creating magical places where people feel right at home. Their mantra is this: ‘Eat Simply. Eat Smart. Eat Well.’ And with the talent and taste that they have come to be known for, it really is that simple. Creators of such iconic places as Commerce Kitchen, Cotton Row and Pane e Vino here in Huntsville, the Boyces are infusing Grille on Main with all of the comfort, camaraderie and cuisine people love.

“At its heart, Grille on Main is meant to be a true neighborhood restaurant. And its A-plus location is definitely a part of that,” says Jimmy. Jimmy, a renowned chef and two-time Mobil Five Star award winner, who has often been featured by the “Today” show and on the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings, Cooking Light, Food & Wine and Men’s Health, is focused on making Grille on Main something that simply makes people feel good. “All those awards…it’s not what matters. It’s all about the basics of good cooking and hospitality. Those are the most important things for me,” Jimmy explains. “It’s been a long year, for everyone. And now, we really want to give people something to celebrate. Grille on Main is a place where you’ll always feel welcome, you’re not going to have to worry about the price point, and you’ll leave feeling satisfied,” he says.
Full of Flavor:
“We have a great variety here,” says Jimmy. “There’s a raw bar…I’ve been working on a New Orleans style barbeque shrimp, there are scallops, and my short ribs—a legacy item we’re bringing along.”

immy’s unstoppable energy and optimism inform every decision he makes and every dish he creates. In fact, when it comes to looking on the bright side of things, you could say he’s a bit of an expert. Diagnosed with advanced cancer in February of 2020, Jimmy has now beaten the odds and the cancer. His celebratory personality never took a hit—and now residents can enjoy the fruits of his talent, too. “We have a great variety here,” says Jimmy of the Grille’s menu. “There are shellfish, a raw bar…I’ve been working on a New Orleans style barbeque shrimp, there are scallops, and my shortribs which are a legacy item we’re bringing along…”
“WE WANT TO EMBRACE OUR NEIGHBORS, GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER AND HAVE FUN.” Fans of his culinary creations will also be glad to know that his famous PB&J in Phyllo dessert will be on the menu, too. Grille on Main offers a comfortable bar space with a sophisticated range of offerings from affordable to ‘special occasion’—not a surprise as Suzan Boyce is a Culinary Institute alum and expert in wines and spirits. How you choose to experience Grille on Main is entirely up to you. “There’s outdoor and indoor dining, private dining, we have a very casual bar space…there’s something for everyone in this restaurant,” says Jimmy. “It’s really about the food, the service, and familiar faces. It’s not too fancy. It’s simply a great, comfortable, neighborhood restaurant,” smiles Jimmy. “We want everyone from Providence to love coming here. We want to embrace our neighbors, get to know each other and have fun.” Visit Grille on Main for great food and good company in the neighborhood.

A TOUCH OF GRACE On a tree lined avenue in The Village of Providence, a white home sits gracefully among its neighbors. Sitting at the head of a generous courtyard, the home itself is a triumph of Italianate architecture. Decorative brackets embellish the eaves and perch high above the entrance below. A precise pair of arched windows echo the arched entrance and front door. Soaring above it all is the impressive three-story tower that crowns the residence. Homeowners Randy and Sandy Stashick are happy to chat when their iconic tower earns the attention and admiration of passersby. “Every few weeks, we have someone stop and ask us who built our house,” laughs Randy. “It’s appealing to them—I think the tower catches their eye.”

Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Randy and Sandy Stashick have lived in multiple places throughout the country. They moved to The Village of Providence a little more than a year ago. Now with Randy’s retirement from his role as President of Engineering for UPS, he and his wife are enjoying their The Village of Providence home, inside and out. “There are a lot of outdoor living areas that we really enjoy,” says Randy. “The screened porch, the adjacent patio…” Situated atop a bluff overlooking Indian Creek, their enviable view and wooded backyard is an ideal backdrop for spending time outdoors. Inside, their home is a serene haven. If ‘inner peace’ had a hue, it would surely be something like the refined palette of airy whites that greet guests upon arrival. An appreciation of the classics The grand piano is perfectly perched alongside grand views through wide French doors. Fresh white hydrangeas are a natural pairing for the Stashicks’ graceful home.

“We spend most of our time in the great room and kitchen,” says Sandy. The great room is flanked with a duo of wide French doors that let in the natural light. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with intricately tiled work spaces and a vast island topped with a smooth expanse of white marble. The home feels completely custom— and their personality is present in every aspect. “We worked with the builder to design the bar area,” Randy says of the eye-catching bar alongside massive, richly finished sliding barn doors. It’s a little different than what one might have seen before in a space like this, but it is a work of art. The same could be said of the neighborhood Randy and Sandy now call home. “We chose The Village of Providence because it’s a little different…you can walk to the

downtown area for restaurants and a little shopping,” Randy explains. “We didn’t have that in other neighborhoods.” It’s also close to family. “Our daughter, Morgan and her husband, Stewart, live in Madison with our one-year-old granddaughter, Stella,” says proud grandparent, Sandy. As for their first year as residents of The Village of Providence: “We have loved living here,” Sandy says. “Everyone is so friendly and it’s so nice that we can get out and walk and do so many things outdoors.” “We’re looking forward to doing even more soon,” Randy adds, smiling. Congratulations on your new home and the first of many great years at The Village of Providence.

What brought you to Huntsville? My husband, Drew, is a software developer and Huntsville had so many opportunities for employment. I began my Huntsville years working with a group that specialized in research genetics. They say everything is connected—my time there put me in the right place at the right time to find my true calling in real estate. We’ve lived in Huntsville for more than 20 years now and we can’t imagine living anywhere else.
You’ve helped a lot of people find ‘home’ in The Village. What’s the most rewarding part of that? Seeing families enjoy their homes, watching a couple grow to a family of three or four, seeing people truly settled in over the years. Once their home is built and they’ve gone from a floorplan to a living, breathing home, it’s so nice to see them enjoy that. I see friends around The Village all the time. It really is a community.
What’s your favorite home style? Oh--I couldn’t say! There’s beauty in all different kinds of homes. Construction has always been near and dear to my heart; my grandfather actually built the home that I grew up in. I’d say the way you build a home, and how it ‘lives’ is even more important than how it looks. We’re fortunate to have both at Providence, so there’s never a trade off!
Helping people comes naturally to you. What else do you enjoy? Some of my favorite things to do are remodeling projects, I take violin lessons, garden in my spare time, and take walks on Huntsville’s ever growing greenway. I’m never at a loss for how to spend a day. Life is good and I believe in embracing it!
Kelly and Todd Burwell, The Village of Providence Residents What brought you to The Village of Providence? When we thought about relocating, we wanted an active, diverse community. The ability to walk to restaurants and shops was important to us, too. We wanted downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and King Street without homes that were 400 years old. We also wanted plenty of green space and a social environment. Providence was the answer in Huntsville.
What do you love about your community? We love Hillcrest, the street we live on. We also love that everyone is friendly and social. It’s nice, too, that the homes here are all different and unique. Providence isn’t a cookie cutter neighborhood. We love that the community is dog friendly, too. We have three mini-poodles— one with pink ears—and we love taking them out
and about. It’s always great to see people out and walking around the community.
What’s one of your favorite things about your home? Our favorite feature in our home has to be our courtyard. It’s home to our garden and pool and we both enjoy the serenity of having this hidden haven right here in the neighborhood.
You like being active and social. What else do you enjoy? We love wine, food and music—and we enjoy travelling for all three! Here in Huntsville, Uncorked Wine Shop and Tasting Room is one of our favorite places. We spend a lot of time there. It’s nice to have a place like that here in The Village of Providence. It’s just a great place to be.

THE WIRED HOME BATHE IN THE JOY OF TRULY LUXURIOUS TECH
How do you start your day? With a cup of joe on the porch? A hot shower? For most of us, our mornings start in the master bathroom. Just think about it...the master bath isn’t just utilitarian, it’s a hardworking haven where we get a jump on our day. It’s no surprise that master bathrooms and suites have been more and more the center of some very savvy tech.
46
www.VillageOfProvidence.com
“A lot of our clients hit the ground running in the mornings,” says Chris Groves, tech and installation expert at FoxView Techology in Huntsville, Alabama. “Whether they want to get ready for their day listening to that song that gets them going or they want to stream their favorite news channel, it’s all about planning for what you want now and what you might want in the future.” So what’s hot for baths now? Invisible speakers, a sleek, well-designed TV installation and ample whole-house wifi to make it stream effortlessly are all part of a fully connected bath experience. When it comes to creating the master bath experience, or any other, Chris and FoxView ascribe to the plan-ahead school of thought. “With cables and powerful wifi capabilities in place, a homeowner can save time and money when they’re ready to expand their home’s tech in a way they may not have imagined,” explains Chris. “We design multiple wifi zones in homes preconstruction so there isn’t anywhere in the home that can’t stream easily and without interruption.” A master suite bath that streams your favorite tunes in surround sound? Singing in the bathtub never sounded so good!
