a double-sided shower, floating vanities, and an indulgent soaking tub. Double doors lead from the master bath directly into a secret garden reserved for the homeowners. It is only accessible via the master bath and offers a lovely retreat in which to enjoy a cup of coffee or a moment of quiet. Also included in the master suite is a coffee/wine bar, allowing you to indulge in your beverage of choice without setting foot outside your sanctuary. The showcase home includes four bedrooms in total, four baths, a large media/theatre/game room, a three-car garage with an underground tornado shelter, and a carriage house with an office and additional storage space. The construction of the home has benefited from the skill, services, donations, and product loans from several local businesses including Victoria’s Interiors, Haleys Flooring and Interiors, Brooks and Collier/Across the Pond, and Billiards and Barstools Gallery. From the tall and striking exterior to the comfortably luxurious interior and unparalleled outdoor living spaces, this is a space destined to be a year-round refuge to those lucky enough to call it home.

C O M B I N AT I O N Latvian-born American abstract painter Mark Rothko once said, “If you … are moved only by the color relationships, then you miss the point.” These words of wisdom apply not only within the art world, but also hold true when it comes to interior design. While color is often the first element we consider when designing the look of our home, it’s important to balance shade and hue with interesting patterns and varying textures. Doing so creates a sense of balance and cohesiveness within a space. Whether you’re mixing up the palette in a muted room with a cheerful pop of color, breaking up clean lines and smooth shapes with a chunky, textured throw or pillow, or using a bold pattern to create visual interest in a room, playing with color, pattern and texture can elevate your space and celebrate your personality. Because such techniques can seem intimidating for those not used to mixing such elements, we’ve turned to interior designer and owner of Wilhouse Designs, Andrea Wilson, for tips on how she successfully incorporates these into her own home and the homes of her clients in a way that is tasteful, effortless, and eye catching.

A PA N T RY W I T H Z E S T While wallpaper seems to be enjoying a resurgence in the world of interior design, Wilson admits it has been in her regular rotation for years. "For me, wallpaper never really left. It's such an easy way to transform a room." Here, sunny lemon paper adds both color and visual interest to the space.

NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES Wilson recommends starting with neutrals then building up the color, texture, and patterns. In this room Wilson first laid a foundation of creamy white then brought in color by painting the ceiling a soft, cerulean blue, and pattern through the use of the rug and throw pillows.

or Andrea, interior design is about more than aesthetics. It’s not just about having a room that looks beautiful. I often ask my clients, ‘How does this design make you feel?’ Color is making a comeback in many homes, as people are moving away from the more muted, all-white or gray looks and incorporating pops of color and bold patterns, something Andrea herself embraces. “Being surrounded by color, pattern, and texture is lively and makes you feel more alive when you see it.”

CHANGE IT UP For those uncertain about making big changes in their home, Andrea has a simple fix. “If someone is looking for an easy way to update their home, I always suggest swapping out light fixtures. It’s an easy project that can really update your room.”

MIX IT UP When it comes to finishes in a room, Andrea says don’t be afraid to mix things up. Here, Wilson brought in a wood stool and gold curtain rod to add visual interest in a room rife with silver and chrome finishes.

Wilson says it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the multitude of options homeowners have in ways to make a statement in their own homes. “I always tell clients to follow their gut. You know what you love and what sings to you… lean into that. A good rule of thumb for any room is to start with a base of neutral colors on certain walls, cabinets, and the sofa, then add pops of color with wallpaper, fabrics, and accessories. Try a little bit,” says Andrea, “and see what works for you.” Wilson also encourages her clients to let go of the need to identify their personal style. “I tell my clients that it’s not important to know what your style is. So many pieces and styles can be intermixed in a way that is lovely. I’ve seen a beautiful antique chest with a piece of modern art hanging over it, and it just works. When you avoid boxing yourself into a certain style, you end up creating a look that is timeless.” WILHOUSE DESIGNS 106 Ben Giles Drive Huntsville, AL 35803 By Appointment @wilhousedesigns

A new builder has joined both The Village of Providence and the Village at Oakland Springs Builders Guild. Ford Classic Homes offers architectural distinction and quality workmanship to every client. The company has been in the home building business for over two decades and, during that time, has built their reputation on commitment to excellence while providing an exceptional home building experience. According to Vice President of Development, Andrew Ford, expanding from Tennessee into the Village developments in Alabama made perfect sense. “Huntsville and Madison are dynamic cities offering buyers great opportunities for job growth, schools, and family life. After visiting the Villages, we saw not just a neighborhood, but a chance to help be part of growing this community and lifestyle.” Sales manager Chesney Ford agrees. “We know that people are drawn to these communities for reasons beyond a new home. They’re drawn to the amenities, the walkability, and having places nearby for social gatherings. That lifestyle aspect is what people are looking for.” Chesney notes that, since 2020, home buyers tend to

spend more time at home so, while people may have wanted a smaller home prior to the pandemic, today’s home buyer tends to want space to spread out. “Expect to see homes that offer defined spaces in addition to large gathering areas. Having room for a defined office space for adults still working from home or a designated study space for children is now a priority. We’re also seeing customers who are finishing out previously unfinished expansion spaces in order to spend more time at home,” says Chesney. “Our goal is to create functional, well thought out plans for every family.” Ford Classic Homes has now broken ground in the Village at Oakland Springs. “While Ford Classic Homes may be new to Alabama,” points out Andrew, “home buyers can rest assured they’re working with experienced builders. We’ve been building luxury homes in Tennessee for over twenty-five years with a strong focus on quality and professionalism.” Bringing with them both in-house architecture and interior design teams, Andrew states “We work to ensure a positive building experience and excellent customer service for every buyer.”

All neighbors welcome, four-legged and otherwise for 'Cupcakes on the Porch'

W H AT B RO U G H T YO U T O T H E V I L L A G E O F P RO V I D E N C E ? When my husband, David, retired as an army officer we moved back to our home in Washington State. He was looking for a civilian job, and one of his offers was in Huntsville. We realized Huntsville had everything we were looking for, so we moved here and planned to live on the arsenal for a few years while we got a feel for the city. I had been into Providence a few times to eat at the restaurants and thought, “Gosh, this is really nice”, so David and I came back together to look at homes. We found out a phase with smaller lots had just opened and I thought it was fantastic to have the option of a smaller home since it’s just the two of us…and our very cute dog, Dublin.

T E L L U S A B O U T YO U R E X P E R I E N C E B U I L D I N G I N P RO V I D E N C E . We ended up getting the last lot in the phase and built with VTS Homes. We pulled elements from four different plans to create our home. It’s a 100% custom build.

W H AT ’ S YO U R FAV O R I T E F E AT U R E O F YO U R H O M E ? That’s a really hard question. Besides the location, I really love the fireplace we built. We covered it with beautiful tile and added a custom-built, floating mantle that wraps all the way around. It ended up being the showpiece of the room…it’s just beautiful.

S P E A K I N G O F LO C AT I O N , W H AT I S YO U R FAV O R I T E T H I N G A B O U T T H E S T R E E T YO U L I V E O N ? We couldn’t be happier here. We knew we wanted a close-knit neighborhood and that sense of community that comes with it—knowing who your neighbors are and having them offer to do little things like grab your mail when you’re out of town. It’s just perfect. We’ve developed such a close-knit group of friends here. During COVID we were all so very lonely, so we developed what we like to call our island parties. We would grab our camping chairs and bring our drinks and pizzas out into the median on the street, sit in a big, spaced-out circle, and just visit.

YO U S E RV E O N T H E N E I G H B O R H O O D W E LC O M E C O M M I T T E E . W H AT D O E S T H AT E N TA I L? Originally, David and I would see people moving in and go over on our own with a bottle of wine to welcome them to the neighborhood. When I found out the welcome committee was looking for a new director, I jumped at the chance. The committee has little gifts for new residents, and my partner, Sheila, created a wonderful informational flyer that gives all sorts of relevant information—where their trash and recycling can be set up, email contacts for the HOA, where to get your card keys, and links to the neighborhood Facebook page and website. We also gift them coupons and gift cards from Village

businesses who wanted to contribute. The HOA emails me each month with a list of new owners and we pick a weekend to run by and deliver their gifts. It’s so nice because we get to spend time with new owners, just chatting and answering any questions they may have. Sometimes it’s ten minutes, sometimes it’s an hour depending on what kind of information they need.

T E L L U S A L I T T L E A B O U T YO U A N D YO U R B A C KG RO U N D. I was born and raised in Seattle. My mom was an artist who paints and sculpts and I grew up around creative people. My husband is an army officer, so we moved around quite a bit, and I’ve been able to experience a variety of lifestyles and communities in the places we’ve lived. When we landed at Providence, I had no idea I would love it so much. And this is such an amazing city! We have art and culture and music and an up-and-coming food scene. There’s just so much going on here and it’s so bustling. I’ve always had jobs in customer service and sales, and I also worked as a dog trainer for several years. These days I love working with the welcome committee. I also started “Cupcakes on the Porch” where I bake cupcakes and make lemonade or hot apple cider and post on the neighborhood Facebook page, inviting the community to come to the porch, grab a cupcake or cookie and a drink, and meet a neighbor. My nickname in the neighborhood is “the cruise director”.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YO U ’ D L I K E R E A D E R S T O KNOW ABOUT LIFE IN V I L L A G E O F P RO V I D E N C E ? We just love it. I love having friends over and going to their homes for dinner. So many people here are passionate about serving the community. We’ve fundraised for animal rescues, Toys for Tots, and the Humane Society. This is a place where neighbors support one another and the community. It’s just perfect. www.VillageOfProvidence.com

For many, this time of year brings out the gardener within us. Seeing the trees produce their first buds of the season and the grass slowly shift from dormant to verdant, we develop that hard-to-explain itch to get out in the glorious weather, plunge our hands into rich soil, and reconnect with Mother Nature. Perhaps John Muir best captured this connection when he said, "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world."

GROW

Whether you’re planning on building the perfect pot-plant collection or are considering installing a flower bed in your back yard, it’s important to know what to plant and when. And you won’t get better advice than that offered by the experts at Indian Creek Nursery, a gardener’s paradise that has been serving the community for over twenty years. We asked Indian Creek plant expert, Stephanie Massey, for any tips and tricks to ensure success as a home gardener.

While many

home gardeners

fall victim to spring fever come January and February, Stephanie cautions against planting too early. “I tell people to play it safe and wait to start spring planting until after Easter.” Massey also advises there are some plants that, while lovely, aren’t acclimated to our unpredictable winters. “If you want to grow more tropical plants like mandevilla or bougainvillea, you have to know you’re planting them for a single season. Most of the perennials we carry at Indian Creek are plants that will survive our winters.” Gorgeous potted plants are a common sight on many a front porch in Providence, and Massey suggests a three-prong approach for planting the perfect pot. “I use a little rhyme to remind people how to fill them—thrill, fill, and spill. Plant your ‘thrill’ plant in the center of your pot, then add your ‘fill’ plants around that, and finish with your ‘spill’ plants that will grow over the sides of the pot.” Many homeowners are interested in planting a particular style of garden. For those interested in starting a cutting garden, Stephanie recommends plants like purple cone flower and shasta daisy. “These plants grow tall enough and replenish themselves fast enough that you’ll have fresh flowers in your home for months.” “If you want to start an herb garden this spring, I recommend using starter plants rather than seeds,” advises Massey. “And there are some herbs, like rosemary, that you can overwinter, so you won’t need to replant every year.” And if you’d like to grow plants that will attract butterflies, bees, or birds, Stephanie suggests visiting Indian Creek and allowing their staff guide to you to the perfect plants. The plant world is always coming up with new perennials to showcase, and Massey says to be on the lookout for some real showstoppers. “Echinaceas, or cone flowers, will be released this year in colors we’ve never had before, and growers have created a new drift rose in vibrant orange that is both disease resistant and compact. There’s also a new sun-tolerant fern that will thrive in pots or in the ground.” Massey’s final piece of advice for those planting perennials is this—be patient. “In the south, because of our soil, I always tell people it’s a three-year plan: the first year your plants will sleep, then the next year they’ll creep, and the third year they’ll leap and really put on a show. Plants are just amazing, and I love what I do.” If you’re planning to add a garden to your back yard or want to flank your front door with show-stopping flowerpots or baskets, be sure to stop by Indian Creek. Their expert team is ready and waiting to help with all your gardening needs.

For some, life in the Village of Providence is a family affair. Homeowners Larry and Denise Pelham were the second residents to build in the neighborhood and are the longest tenured residents of Providence. Their daughter, Samantha, and her husband, Niz, were next to make Providence home, followed by their son, Carter, and his wife, Linh. We recently sat down to chat with the whole family about what life is like in Providence when you have so much extended family enjoying the same neighborhood.

FROM L to R: LINH & CARTER PELHAM LARRY & DENISE PELHAM NIZ, SAMANTHA & PENELOPE RUSTAMOV A COMBINED 57 YEARS LIVING IN THE VILLAGE OF PROVIDENCE

TELL US ABOUT THE JOURNEY THAT LED TO YOU ALL LIVING IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD. Denise: When we originally moved to Providence Sam was a student at UAH and Carter was still in high school. Eventually, they both left for school before making their way back to Providence. Samantha was single when she purchased her home after starting her pharmaceutical career at Huntsville Hospital. Then Niz came into the picture (we love you, Niz!) and they had their baby…and that was about the time that Carter came back to the neighborhood. Samantha: We live about two blocks away (from Larry and Denise).

AND, CARTER, IS YOUR HOME NEWLY COMPLETED? Carter: That’s right. We’ve been here about three months.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR HOME & WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT? Denise: We just love the security of the neighborhood and the privacy of our courtyard. We love being able to walk away and travel and not worry about our home. Samantha: For us, we were looking for more room and our three-car garage was very appealing. We love having a bigger outdoor space for our daughter and our dog. Carter: We really love not being in a loft anymore. I was drawn to the bluff lots because I think they are unique in that we don’t really have a backyard neighbor. We can enjoy the creek and the greenway, so it’s very scenic. We added plenty of windows to the back of the home and love having outdoor space for our dogs. Linh: We also wanted the interior of the home to be a bit more modern and open, so we did a custom design with our architect to make sure we had lots of open space and natural light.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIFE IN PROVIDENCE? Denise: I consider some of my neighbors to be family. One friend dropped cookies off to me today, and another stopped by just to visit. It’s just a great community. Sam and I walk together almost every morning and everyone here is just so friendly and warm. Samantha: With the pandemic, I think everyone felt their circle of friends shrink a little bit and people weren’t getting together as much as they used to, but with a neighborhood like this it was easy to check in on each other and take care of one another. We’ve gotten a lot closer with some of our neighbors.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE SO MUCH FAMILY HERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD? Niz: It’s so accessible. I’ll say, “Hey, Larry, can I run down to your garage? I need to borrow something.” It’s so easy. We all get along and we try to make all of our lives better by communicating and helping one another out. Carter: When I made the decision to move back (to Providence), I wanted to embrace the positives of having my family around. We see each other a lot, but it’s always a positive experience. Linh: I love having impromptu dinners and spontaneous wine nights together. I appreciate it because my family lives two hours away, so it’s amazing to have everyone nearby and have the opportunity for family dinner nights and enjoy that sense of closeness. Samantha: And there are nights when we’re doing our own thing, walking down to one of the restaurants with the stroller, and we’ll see my parents’ bikes out in front of one of the places. It’s nice to know they’re there…even when we aren’t together. Denise: Being so close really has enhanced our relationship with each other. It’s so fun to have them pop in.

WHAT'S IN A

NAME SK i PJACK COTTAGE

THE ROAD to finding your forever home isn’t always straight and without detours, something homeowners Michael and Carrie Rice experienced firsthand. The couple met in 2008 on a blind date and, after marrying in 2009, were interested in moving into the Village of Providence, but fate had other plans and the pair ended up moving to Texas, enjoying the Lone Star State for a couple of years before returning to Alabama. They settled in Madison, enjoying life there until 2019 when they realized it was time to come home to Providence. Michael, a software engineer, and Carrie, who works in communications for Northrop Grumman, decided to place the building of their dream home into the capable hands of The Builders Group. Construction began in the fall of 2019

It's All In The Details:

This Page - Pottery & art throughout the Rices' home is a curated collection from their travels through Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and an especially memorable encounter with 4th and 5th generation artisans in Deruta, Italy. Opposite Page - Personal touches are what truly make a house a home, right down to the paint choices. The 'Admiral Blue' kitchen cabinets are a proud nod to each of their fathers time spent in the service.

WE HAVE A HABIT OF GIVING NAMES TO THINGS IN OUR LIVES LIKE HOMES AND CARS and ran on schedule until the pandemic broke out in March of 2020. Deadlines were extended as most of the world shut down during quarantine. Scheduling inspections was difficult and took longer than was the norm, but Michael and Carrie, who were renting an apartment at The Modern and were a mere five-minute walk from their building site, were frequent visitors to the project. “We walked up almost every day to see the progress and really got to know the builders, onsite guys, and the construction manager,” says Carrie. Carrie and Michael agree the best way to get used to downsizing is to spend your transition time living in an apartment. The couple decreased the size of their home by 2,500 square feet, and moved into a

700 square-foot apartment which made the new build feel downright palatial. What Michael and Carrie built was a personalized home that is inextricably connected to who they are as a couple. “We have a habit of giving names to things in our lives like homes and cars,” says Carrie. For this home, Michael came up with the name Skipjack Cottage, a title that pays homage to the pair’s love story. Michael proposed to Carrie in St. Michaels, Maryland, along the Chesapeake Bay as the skipjacks, traditional fishing boats often used in oyster dredging, sailed by. The name not only honors their love affair, but it became a foundation of sorts, providing the theme around which the home was designed.

Nature Abounds:

A cedar branch placed over the bed is a thoughtful reminder of the importance of nature in the couple's life. Weekends are best spent exploring in their stylish Airstream.

Subtle nods to all things nautical abound throughout the home. Carrie’s father was in the Navy and Michael’s was in the Air Force, so shades of blue were a natural choice for the couple and are tastefully used throughout the home. Other hints to east coast living include brick feature walls, exposed beams, and brass hardware. For Carrie, working to build a home from the ground up was surprisingly enjoyable. “It’s been a fun process. Some people say they’d never do it again, but this was a fun project for us to do together.” As seems to be customary for this creative couple, Michael and Carrie made thoughtful modifications to personalize their new home, which included adding a brick surround to the indoor and outdoor fireplaces and installing a large cedar beam in the ceiling to transition between the dining and living rooms. The same cedar used in the beam was also incorporated into both fireplaces. For Carrie, subtlety was key for the nautical theme. “We didn’t want to make the ship or nautical theme too obvious, but there are a few things that do stand out.” Take, for example, the light fixture over the dining table that is reminiscent of a piece you’d find hanging in the captain’s chambers of a tall ship. And, in one of the bathrooms, a hanging lamp looks like a Fresnel light that’s been plucked from the top of a lighthouse. The attention to detail Carrie and Michael brought to their design style is impressive — hand-crafted, brass drawer pulls from Stratford -upon-Avon, England were ordered online and lend an subtle old-world charm to the space. As for their decision to build in Village of Providence, the pair couldn’t be happier. “We absolutely love it,” says Michael. “We know all of our neighbors and enjoy regular gatherings. The camaraderie is great. We sit on our front porch and have breakfast on Saturday mornings and enjoy chatting with neighbors as they walk by”. Carrie agrees. “The sense of community in Providence is obvious and clearly an intention of the developers. We feel really fortunate to be here.” Skipjack Cottage was lovingly constructed by The Builders Group

or Village of Providence residents John and Jennifer Mumby, moving to Alabama seemed to be part of their destiny. “We lived in an area outside of Atlanta for 22 years,” says Jennifer. “We made really good friends, watched kids grow up and move back to the neighborhood but, as much as we loved it there, we didn’t want to stay in Atlanta as we got older.” The couple debated on where to move for several years and found that Huntsville seemed to check all their boxes— a city not too big, not too small, and offering everything the pair was looking for. And, for Jennifer, Providence was starting to look like home. “The Village of Providence had been on my radar for a number of years. Twelve years ago, when my sister and her husband retired to the Tennessee River area, their builder sent them to Providence to look at the home styles and I happened to be with them. At the time, my sister said to me, ‘You know, I could see you and John living in a place like this.’” When Jennifer and John were ready to move, they made short work of the lot buying business. “We came, looked, and picked a lot that day,” Jennifer says with a smile. “We felt as though people who were drawn to this type of development wanted to be social and we loved the idea of living in a walkable neighborhood.”

The Mumbys opted for a completely custom-built home with The Builders Group. “We started from the ground up. I had experience working for an architectural and engineering firm, so I was able to read plans and figure out how to maximize the use of space in our home.” Although it was hard living three and a half hours away during the construction process, the Mumbys are thrilled with the results. “The builders were great to work with and we love our home.” John and Jennifer moved into their new home in October of 2019.

t just so happens that Jennifer, in addition to having an eye for design, is also an accomplished artist. Mumby used her artistic eye straight out of college, beginning her professional career in advertising, where she learned to use color, balance, and proportion, a skill that easily transitioned with her when she pivoted toward home décor. “Seeing trends and what people react to has been really good for my art.”

Both Jennifer’s penchant for practical design and artistic flair are on full display in the couple’s lovely home. Color is used throughout in a way that is bright and bold, effortless and cohesive. While some homeowners are intimidated to use color so boldly, Jennifer has no hesitation. “I have the advantage of having worked in a homedécor-related industry for over 20 years. At the time we were building, the trend in home décor was grey and beige. Those are very safe colors that I actually find calming but, as an artist, I just can’t live in a bland world.” It's unlikely the word bland is ever used to describe the Mumby home. From the moment you step through the front door, you are awash in tasteful color. “I used indigo blue as a ribbon throughout the house,” says Mumby. “The dining room ceiling is blue, as is the velvet sofa, and we used navy in the bedroom.” But blue is not the only shade on display in this lively space— Jennifer skillfully uses cheerful pops of alternate colors like orange. “Orange is such a happy color, and blue and orange are complimentary shades that just work well together.” The builders worked with Jennifer to transform some attic space into a room complete with built-in bunkbeds and a hanging nightstand that is used when their grandniece comes to visit. Jennifer also added a utility sink to the attic space and had it insulated so she can store art supplies in the eaves of the home. Says Mumby, “I really feel as though we have utilized every inch of space.” At nearly every turn, guests can enjoy Jennifer’s vast and varied art collection displayed throughout the home. “I knew I was going to have a lot of

artwork on the walls—some I had saved for years and others I painted myself.” The fact that each piece seems to be thoughtfully placed is no coincidence. “I kind of planned the art along with the furniture. I painted the piece hanging over the fireplace specifically for that space. I also studied with a well-known Georgia painter for several years and own several of his originals. And sometimes I like to move things around seasonally, or if I get a new piece, I’ll swap it out with something currently on the wall.” For now, Mumby paints most often for personal pleasure, though she has been known to take

with friends to the nearby wine bar on Fridays and enjoying a drink before moving on to the next spot for dinner. “We love the walkability and that we have different options for food. There are so many good gathering spots here.” Jennifer admits she and John were surprised at how quickly bonds were built with their neighbors. “We hadn’t factored in the number of ex-military couples and families living here who are used to moving and making new friends quickly. Ours is a very congenial group… and a diverse group. Everybody is different, but we all love being here and having a good group of friends.”

'I FIND WHAT I LIKE TO PAINT MOST ARE LANDSCAPES OR ANYTHING THAT TELLS A STORY' on a commissioned piece now and again when the subject matter speaks to her. She primarily uses oils, but still enjoys working with watercolors now again. “I am retiring in May, and I think at that point the art will become more of a career for me.” It's hard to remain immune from Jennifer’s enthusiasm as she talks about her craft. “Art is really a big part of our home.,” she says warmly. “My husband likes it as well, so it really is everywhere…even on our screened porch, where we’ve hung an original oil painting.” As much as the Mumbys love their home, they are equally enamored with the neighborhood. Jennifer makes the most of the location, strolling

The COVID-19 pandemic occurred just a few months after the couple moved in, and actually played a roll in the pair getting to know their neighbors. “We love being on Hillcrest Avenue which has a median out front. During COVID, the neighbors would bring something to eat or drink and we would gather, six feet apart, on the island and get to know one another.” For Jennifer it’s that connection to friends and neighbors that adds color to life. “You can always find somebody to do something with,” she says with a smile. “We landed in such a good place.” Jennifer & John's home was lovingly constructed by The Builders Group

'AS AN ARTIST I JUST CAN'T LIVE IN A BLAND WORLD'

J

ennifer’s life and her passion for art are inextricably entwined. “Growing up on a farm in Tennessee with no close neighbors forced me to amuse myself as a child, and I did that through art. I loved to draw and paint, so my mother enrolled me in art lessons which allowed me to spend time with other kids who liked art. I learned how to work with pastels first, then moved to oils. Art is something that has been present throughout my life.” Jennifer and John both enjoy traveling and their trips often end up as paintings. “I find what I like to paint most are landscapes or anything that tells a story. My paintings are stories on canvas in that they tell a story. If I paint an image, I want the viewer to make up their own story in their mind, or perhaps looking at the painting triggers a memory for them.” Mumby’s home art studio was strategically designed to provide her the best lighting for her craft. “The optimum light for an artist is north light because it is more neutral and doesn’t skew warm or cold. We picked this lot because it is mainly north facing, and I had big windows put in (the studio), so it’s kind of perfect. Even the cats loves it,” she says, then adds with a grin, “My husband says it’s the biggest room in the house.” If you’d like to see more of Jennifer’s artwork, she’s part of group that will be showing at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in May and June of this year.
