LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Many features attract tourists, en masse, to Provincetown–the sea, an embracing natural landscape, otherwordly golden light, a cultural history as art colony and fishing village, Fellini-esque moments and quaint architecture and narrow streets. A lovely summer's day at Herring Cove may attract hordes similar in numbers to the flocks that land on St. Mark's Square in Venice. Yet, remarkably, on that same day, in this same place, a single person might find herself somewhere else in peaceful solitude. We who live here, or visit often, all have sacred places. Some more secret (or meaningful) than others. It seems all the wonders that universally tether us to this town still make for distinct stories and unique memories. To that end, multi-media artist Barbara Cohen, visitor since 1973, part-time resident since 1993, was inspired to pair her iconic painted Polaroids (just one artistic outlet) with collected reflections on favorite Provincetown places by an eclectic array of long-time visitors and residents. The result, Our Provincetown: Intimate Portraits, published last year by Provincetown Arts Press, reminds us of our shared love–yet unique communion–with this alluring place. As Cohen writes in her introduction, “It has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life to create this community testament to the beauty and specialness of this small town, and its endless capacity to evoke intimacy and deep connection.”

The Flats

GAIL MAZUR

At a loss today for what to do I walk out on the flats which appear reliably when the tides predictably go out, a true fact I’ve learned absurdly late in my life for I grew up on a river . . . Now in warm morning sunlight, at mid-day or evening, the world keeps changing, fluctuating, so much unpredictable . . . and when I’m at a loss, these particulars of life renewing in tidal pools help me forget what I’ve thought I’d lost, I read odd

calligraphic messages odd invisible creatures leave in their quickening travels, I follow a minnow’s rhythmic wriggle, I can see ribboning trails of sea worms whose genus I keep unlearning, of hermit crabs carrying newly abandoned homes heavily across the wet sands, always looking out for more capacious, more hospitable emptied shells. Ceramic sandscoured shards of cast-off

plates, or bottles once tossed off long lost ships, their wet sheen frosted beautifully by the tide’s abrasions, the bowl of a white clay pipe, old flotsam gifts of another century’s shipwreck still returning, emblems of our obscure histories. Now, a sweet wonderment of spotting my friend Marian this late September morning in her navasana pose on a neighbor’s deck, her cotton shirt luminous, her smile beatific, two of us at peace in the universe we share . . .

Gail Mazur’s eighth collection of poetry is Land’s End: New and Selected Poems (2020). She lives in Provincetown and Cambridge, MA, and most days walks on the flats (or wishes she was). She is founding director of the Blacksmith House Poetry Series in Cambridge.

Special Feature OUR TOWN

Tasha Hill

ELIZABETH WINSTON

When would I have first wandered there during my years living in town, that dirt road branching off Howland Street that leads to Tasha Hill, marked only by a weathered bouquet of mailboxes and, on trash night, a motley collection of dented cans and cracked plastic bins? I don’t remember that first time, or which of its scattered wood dwellings I was first inside. Each one different, yet recognizable as part of a whole, and kin to the shacks that stand in the dunes of the Province Lands—weathered wood, salvaged windows, odd angles— unlikely houses alive with something more than just the stories that are told about them. They crouch in the scrub pine or against the dune or flank the clearing at the top of the hill: one, whose low fence and creaking gate protect a sprawling garden, stands across from a taller structure, whose gabled roof peaks above a sleeping loft with a ladder-like staircase.

From the clearing at the top of the hill, a footpath leads to the big house, the one where Rose “Sunny” Tasha—matriarch of the Tasha clan, best friend of poet of the dunes Harry Kemp, Provincetown legend— lived out her old age, burying cans of food in the yard in case of emergency, sleeping with a shotgun next to her bed that she was prone to firing into the ceiling if awoken from sleep. Or so goes the version of the story that I once heard.

I’ve heard, too, that Sunny built the smallest of the shacks on the hill for Harry Kemp, homeless but for his one-room shack in the dunes in his own old age. Even now, the place feels otherworldly, that it still holds something in its gnarled embrace that we’ve now nearly lost in Provincetown. Tales of it can still be heard, if you listen in the right places. Sunny’s youngest, Paul, still rides his horses bareback through the woods out to the dunes at dawn, someone told me not long ago. Perhaps, like the town, this is part of what makes the place what it is: the extent to which its history has been distorted by tale and rumor is irrelevant; story itself is the point.

Elizabeth Winston is the editor of Provincetown Arts magazine and the director of Provincetown Arts Press.
