LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Special thanks to:

Many features attract tourists, en masse, to Provincetown– the sea, an embracing natural landscape, otherwordly golden light, a cultural history as art colony and fishing village, Fellini-esque moments and quaint architecture and narrow streets. A lovely summer's day at Herring Cove may attract hordes similar in numbers to the flocks that land on St. Mark's Square in Venice. Yet, remarkably, on that same day, in this same place, a single person might find herself somewhere else in peaceful solitude. We who live here, or visit often, all have sacred places. Some more secret (or meaningful) than others. It seems all the wonders that universally tether us to this town still make for distinct stories and unique memories.

To that end, multi-media artist Barbara Cohen, visitor since 1973, part-time resident since 1993, was inspired to pair her iconic painted Polaroids (just one artistic outlet) with collected reflections on favorite Provincetown places by an eclectic array of long-time visitors and residents. The result, Our Provincetown: Intimate Portraits, published last year by Provincetown Arts Press, reminds us of our shared love–yet unique communion–with this alluring place. As Cohen writes in her introduction, “It has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life to create this community testament to the beauty and specialness of this small town, and its endless capacity to evoke intimacy and deep connection.”
