ON THE COVER This year ART GUIDE is pleased to showcase a lovely watercolor from the permanent collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. The painter is Charles W. Hawthorne, founder of the Provincetown art colony, whose school opened here in 1899. PAAM, established in 1914 by artists and townspeople, celebrated its Centennial in 2014. With a spectacular modern renovation in 2006 that created state of the art exhibition galleries, improved classrooms and additional storage, the museum has grown into a world-class institution with an impressive permanent collection of significant Provincetown-affiliated artists. In our 2021 special feature, we are delighted to have the museum's Chief Executive Officer, Christine McCarthy, share some of her favorite pieces from the museum's collection, beginning with our cover painting. – P.Z.

In 2019, PAAM organized an exhibition of watercolors by Charles Hawthorne, Hans Hofmann and Paul Resika. Hawthorne, one of the founders of PAAM, best noted for his narrative oils of local Provincetown folk and the fishing industry, also produced an exquisite body of watercolors using light filled planes of color which prefigure modernist use of color and abstraction. Through this project, I truly realized the power of watercolor, an incredibly difficult medium, showcased masterfully in this image. -C.M Charles Webster Hawthorne (1872-1930) studied at the Art Students League from 1893-1896 and was an assistant to artist William Merritt Chase. He opened the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown in 1899. On sunny days the class model would be posed (clothed) on one of the open wharves then scattered all along the harbor front. She would be seated in the full glare of the sun with her face shaded either by a hat or parasol, producing on the canvases of the students a typical image that came to be called “the Mudhead.” Hawthorne’s strategy was to force students to grasp the form through the contrast of illuminated and shadowed parts. His weekly demonstration class was held out of doors in good weather and often as many as one hundred gathered on the wharf or beach to watch what was sure to be a superb performance. Hawthorne influenced many of his students, among them Ross Moffett and Edwin Dickinson. Dickinson said of Hawthorne: “The best teacher I ever knew”. Hawthorne was awarded many prizes in his lifetime and had many paintings selected for purchase by institutions sponsoring exhibitions. Charles Webster Hawthorne is buried in Provincetown.

ROBERT MOTHERWELL We worked for almost five years on the planning of "Robert Motherwell: Beside the Sea" (2012), the first solo exhibition of Motherwell’s paintings in Provincetown. During that time, I began to take much more notice of how the water from the bay splashed against a seawall, or why Motherwell used that certain blue to capture a moment. It holds great sentimental meaning for me and Motherwell’s love for Provincetown. – C.M. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) had a strong connection to the beachside community of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he lived and worked almost every summer for fifty years. Motherwell was happiest while at the Cape, and could engage in his work without the pressures of the New York art world and the distraction of everyday life.

In the summer of 1962, twenty years after he first started visiting Provincetown, Motherwell began his Beside the Sea series while renting a studio at the Days Lumberyard. It was also the summer that he negotiated the purchase of 631 Commercial Street, which served as his summer home and studio until the end of his life. In his 1978 essay “Provincetown and Days Lumberyard: A Memoir,” Motherwell praised the quality of Provincetown’s light, and described how living in Provincetown stimulated his creativity: “People tend to forget that Provincetown is (roughly) on the forty-two degree meridian, as is Barcelona and Opporto and Cannes and Rome (almost exactly) and Macedonia and Istanbul and Peking (more or less), a distinctly warm southern light compared to Northern

ROSS MOFFETT In an interview with the artist Marion Roth, she spoke about the way she sees the nature and landscape of Outer Cape Cod – she said when she looks at the dunes on certain days, she sees Ross Moffett Town. I have never forgotten that and have had similar experiences when I walk my dog – the sky, the dunes, the water replicate paintings that I have seen and art imitates life in no uncertain way. Moffet was such a key figure in shaping the Provincetown Art Association and championing its growth throughout his time here. This dramatic painting, both in scale and scope, has always moved me as it features Moffett's unique style as one who coupled traditional and abstract painting. – C.M. Ross Moffett, a native of Iowa, came to Provincetown in 1913 to study with Charles Hawthorne. During his lifetime Moffett exhibited every year at the Provincetown Art Association since its establishment in 1914. Moffett was an integral part of the Provincetown artist community opening his own school in 1921 and holding various offices in the Art Association for 27 years. His steadfast leadership and dedication to the Provincetown Art Association sustained it through many difficult days, especially during and just after the war, and his history of the first thirty-three years of that organization’s existence, "Art in Narrow Streets," has become a standard and indispensable reference for any research on the subject. Moffett’s wide interests ranged from painting to archaeology and history and he wrote and lectured on these subjects in a lucid style coupled with sure knowledge and a rare sense of humor. Moffett viewed Hawthorne’s teaching from his own strongly individual vantage point, although he accepted it with natural respect. The turning point for Moffett came in 1916, when he began to feel that he was discovering his own voice. “I continued working, endeavoring to mine the vein I had uncovered. My subject was life in Provincetown as I observed it visually during my many walks in the town, particularly in the west section where the Portuguese flavor was especially manifested.” Moffett portrayed a world of bleak strength, fateful mood and stark poetry. The sheer painting power of the forms and color Moffett used in these paintings seems to have been his most forceful statement about man and his fate. It is, moreover, expressed as only a painter can express it without loss to rhetoric. Few American painters so successfully incorporated the figure in a landscape as Ross Moffett. In 1932, Moffett participated in the first Whitney Museum Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting with an entry titled Provincetown Wharf. 28 | provincetownartguide.com

PAAM’s PEARLS

GERRIT BENEKER "Under a Wharf" is one of five historic paintings donated by founding artists to launch the Art Association’s permanent collection in 1915. From 1981-1999, the painting was missing after being stolen from Provincetown’s Town Hall. It was discovered in Tucson, Arizona by a frequent visitor to PAAM and Provincetown and was eventually returned. It remains one of the original donations to PAAM’s collection. – C.M. In 1905, Gerrit Beneker (1882-1934) began his art career as an illustrator. He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit’s early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap and over 50 illustrations for magazine stories. Beneker was an idealist and an optimist. His early work reflects his connection to the hope and industrial energy of early 20th century America. In 1912 Gerrit went to Provincetown to attend Charles Hawthorne’s painting classes. Artworks done during the next few years demonstrate a skill in Impressionist landscape techniques. Meanwhile, his studio works retained a traditional, representational style and he continued to do illustrations for the New York City art editors. Gerrit was a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association and was very active in the development of the art colony. Beneker worked on Cape Cod from 1915-1934. He is best known for his Impressionist Landscapes and Realist portraits of working people for which local Provincetown men often modeled.

BLANCHE LAZZELL I had never heard of Blanche Lazzell until 2001 when I started my job as the Director of PAAM. The MFA in Boston was mounting an exhibition, "From Paris to Provincetown" and we supplied information to the curator about Lazzell’s time in Provincetown. I had no idea she was one of the premiere white-line woodblock printmakers or that she had studied with both Charles Hawthorne and Hans Hofmann. Her multi-faceted approach to making art is unprecedented. We have built, through the generosity of a handful of donors, a beautiful collection of prints, drawings and paintings. This remains one of my favorites. – C.M. Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956) was a master of the American white-line woodcut, also known as the Provincetown Print. There has been a recent resurgence of popularity of this print method resulting in two 2002 exhibitions of Lazzell’s work at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. For more than forty years, Blanche Lazzell passed almost every summer, and many winters as well, in Provincetown. There she entertained visitors in her quaint wharf studio, displaying her work and demonstrating the techniques of wood-block cutting and printing. Her "Color Wood Block Printing," a course “of five or more private lessons - $5 per lesson,” attracted numerous students, many of whom continued to work in the medium throughout their careers." Cubism, as Lazzell defined it, “the organization of flat planes of color, with an interplay of space, instead of perspective,” was admirably suited to her woodcuts and to the angular patterns of the Provincetown houses, rooftops, and wharves that dominated much of her work. Between 1916 and 1956 Lazzell created more than 138 blocks and countless impressions. The cutting was made almost exclusively by knife, following a design drawn directly on the block. In printing, a sheet of paper was affixed to the top edge of the block and folded back, away from the cut image. As each segment was colored, the paper was returned to the block and printed with pressure from the bowl of a spoon. Watercolors were used for printing and China white was occasionally added for the opaque pastel tones. Blanche Lazzell reminisced about the summer of 1915 in Provincetown, her first, with nostalgic enthusiasm: “Hundreds of American artists who had been living in Europe before the First World War flocked to Provincetown... that summer of 1915, when the whole scene, everything and everybody was new, it was glorious indeed... Creative energy was in the air we breathed. It was in this quaint setting that the Provincetown Print came into being.” 48 | provincetownartguide.com

EDWIN DICKINSON In 2007, after a major renovation and expansion, PAAM mounted the exhibition, "Edwin Dickinson in Provincetown" curated by Mary Abell and Helen Dickinson Baldwin. This painting was on extended loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts where it had been housed for ten years. During the run of the show, the owner of the painting was visiting from Pennsylvania and it was a very grey, rainy day. He came bounding into my office to exclaim that on his walk down the pier, he had seen what Dickinson saw in this painting – he was so excited and after he described his experience, he said, without hesitation, that this painting belonged at PAAM and it never made its way back to Philadelphia. – C.M. Edwin Dickinson (1891-1978 ) came to Provincetown in 1911 to study with Charles Hawthorne. Dickinson helped found the Provincetown Art Association where he also taught drawing; Philip Malicoat and Bruce McKain were among his students. As an artist he was able to bridge the gap between the old guard and the Modernists. Like the traditional Provincetown painters he worked from nature while employing the new freedoms of composition and idea of the Modernist. Dickinson was born and raised in Seneca Falls, New York, in the Finger Lakes area; his family moved to Buffalo in 1897. In 1911 he enrolled at the Art Students League, where he studied under William Merritt Chase. In the summers of 1912 and 1913 he stayed in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he studied with Charles Hawthorne, and continued there year round from 1913 to the summer of 1916, working as Hawthorne’s assistant in 1914. From late summer 1916 through year’s end Dickinson investigated the possibilities of printmaking in Provincetown with fellow painter Ross Moffett, and made further attempts in the ‘20s and ‘30s, but felt his time was better spent painting. Dickinson remained active as a teacher into the 1960s, by which time his painting output had sharply diminished following the removal of a tubercular lung in 1959 and the increased demands imposed by his growing reputation. These included participation in numerous one-person and group shows, the most important of which were a large retrospective of his work in Boston in 1959, another in New York in 1961 that included 157 works and was reviewed by thirteen critics, followed by an exhibition of his work organized by the Museum of Modern Art that traveled to twelve venues in eleven states, another retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1965, covered by nine critics, and inclusion in the American exhibition at the 34th Venice Biennale, where he was the featured painter. Various honors, awards, interviews, and lecture requests followed. There is no record of his having painted after 1963. By 1970 he was displaying symptoms indicative of Alzheimer’s disease and died in Provincetown on December 2, 1978. 56 | provincetownartguide.com

HANS HOFMANN This painting was held in a private collection for many years. It was gifted to PAAM in 2018 and we believe it to be one of the first landscapes painted by Hans Hofmann upon his arrival to Provincetown in 1934/35. Nature was the creative inspiration that drove Hofmann and I cannot think of a better example than this beautiful landscape. – C.M. Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) came to the United States in 1930 to teach at the University of California at Berkeley. Hofmann founded the Hofmann School of Art in New York (1934) and Provincetown (1935). He became an American citizen in 1941. Hofmann’s influence on the new American Abstract artist is difficult to quantify as he taught and influenced so many artists including Lee Krasner, George McNeil, Peter Busa and Lillian Orlowsky to name so very few. Through Hofmann’s influence, and through older artists’ ties to the French art world, Provincetown was one of the first art communities in the United States to be exposed to PostImpressionism, Surrealism, and Abstraction. But visiting New Yorkers brought their ideas about new art as well. Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner spent the summer of 1944 at 15 Cottage Street in Provincetown, and the painter Fritz Bultman later described a “considerable exchange” between Hofmann and Pollock on the topics of “Idea” and “Nature” at that time.

After 43 years of teaching – 23 of them in Provincetown – Hofmann closed both of his schools in 1958 in order to paint full-time. Long renowned as a teacher, he now is given due recognition as a painter, including a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1963.

JANICE BIALA In 2018, PAAM mounted the first solo exhibition of Biala’s work. This exhibition, curated by Jason Andrew, saw critical acclaim and brought much needed awareness to this artist’s eight decade career. – C.M. Biala (1903-2000) was a feisty and articulate painter. A Russian émigrée, born Schenehaia Tworkovska in 1903. She arrived in New York from her native Bialystok in 1913 with her older brother Jacob. The Tworkovska family underwent a series of name changes (becoming Jack and Janice Tworkov and eventually Janice Biala, after the village in Eastern Poland where she and Jack had been born.) Provincetown would play a critical role in Biala’s development as an artist. From the first summer of 1923, when she and Jack hitchhiked their way there to study with Charles Hawthorne, to her frequent return trips from her home in Paris to visit Jack at his family’s home on the West End. Opinionated and tough, the young brunette with a soft Eastern European face was a free thinker of the highest order. She left for France on a boat in 1929 and while in Paris, fell in love with the English novelist Ford Madox Ford. In the early 1940s, following the outbreak of World War II and the death of Ford, she fled France with her life and returned to Provincetown for a safe place to heal. And thereafter, as she re-established her career in Paris, Provincetown continued to be an enduring muse and endless source of inspiration.

LUCY L’ENGLE One of the interesting discoveries I made when I came to PAAM in 2001 was the number of husband/wife artist teams that came to Provincetown to study, open schools, etc. One of those couples was William and Lucy L’Engle. Sometimes the styles are very similar like Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed or not. I was immediately taken by the strength of Lucy’s paintings – her Herculean figures, her ability to create a three dimensional composition on a two dimension picture plane, and her bold palette. – C.M. A painter in Cubist style who studied in Paris with Albert Gleizes, Lucy L’Engle (1889-1978 ) was born in New York City to affluent parents. Her father, Charles Stelle, was a successful real estate professional, and her mother, Lucy Barnes Brown, was, in 1893, the first women’s champion of the American Professional Golf Association. Lucy L’Engle studied at the Art Students League with George Bridgman, and then went to Paris where she met artist William L’Engle. They married in 1914, had a daughter the following year, and in 1916 settled in New York City. Shortly after, they visited Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Lucy enrolled in the Cape Cod School of Art with Charles Hawthorne. A second daughter was born in 1917, and the family continued to visit Provincetown in the summers with Lucy and William becoming active in the Provincetown Art Association and Lucy first exhibiting there in 1918. Socializing with many of the participants in the “town’s intellectual and social milieu, they achieved a degree of notoriety for their parties.” Among Lucy’s good friends were Modernist artists Blanche Lazzell, Ellen Ravenscroft, Agnes Weinrich and Marguerite Zorach. In 1918, the L’Engles traveled to France, and returned to buy a house in Truro, near Provincetown, which they decided had become too crowded. In 1925, Lucy L’Engle joined the New York Society of Women Artists, and in 1927, she and her husband served on the Provincetown Art Association jury for the First Modernist Exhibition. Like many modern artists of her era, she was influenced by Vassily Kandinsky, the Russian painter who founded the German expressionist movement, Blue Rider, in 1912. After her husband’s death in 1957, Lucy L’Engle devoted much energy to preserving his memory. She exhibited his work in Truro at their home where the studio was named L’Engle Studio Gallery. She also continued to exhibit her work there and in New York where she had a residence until 1972. She died in Truro in 1978. 80 | provincetownartguide.com

MILTON AVERY This highly significant gift was part of the Campaign for PAAM’s Centennial to collect 100 gifts for the permanent collection. It is an exquisite example of the large evocative canvases produced at the end of Avery’s life. These are the triumph of his career, as well as being some of the most impressive paintings ever made of Cape Cod. – C.M. Milton Avery (1885-1965) was born at Sand Bank, New York (today known as Altmar) on 7 March 1885. After studying for a while at the Connecticut League of Art Students in Hartford under Charles Noel Flagg and at the Art Society School there under Albertus Jones, Avery worked in manufacturing and with an insurance company until 1924. He moved to New York in 1925 and married the artist Sally Michel, an illustrator, a year later. Milton Avery was largely self-taught, receiving no formal training until the age of thirty. Avery summered in Provincetown from 1954-1960 where he began work on the large canvases of sea, sky and dunes which would be the triumph of his career. Among Avery’s devoted colleagues at the time were abstractionists Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb. Avery himself worked both figuratively and abstractly. Hans Hofmann said of Avery that he was the first American to understand color as a creative means. Towards the end of his life, Milton Avery summered in Provincetown (1954-60), and produced the large evocative canvases of the sea, sky, and dunes.
