Letter From the Publisher There is a sublime beauty in the detailed rendering of a portrait in time. Such was the bailiwick of artists likeTitian, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Eyck, Sargent, Michelangelo, Courbet, Bellows, and Wyeth to name but a handful. But with the exception of a tiny gesture, perhaps the familiar set of a mouth, a sloped shoulder, a lazy eye, it is difficult to break from the specificity that defines a figure as them, not us. Hence the intrigue with figurative expressionism where faces are often erased, figures fluid, almost malleable, where dreamlike scenes are created that suggest a greater consciousness-humankind rather than a single human. These figures represent a visceral, perhaps even uncomfortable look at a broader human condition. They are less about the figure than they are more broadly about his psyche. According to art historian Adam Zucker, "The second generation of Figurative Expressionism, which was distinctly American, began in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the mid-1950s. In addition to their affinities with abstractionism, the artists of this school were influenced by the Renaissance and Old Master paintings as well as European cubism and expressionism, and they drew subject matter from the Old and New Testaments, from Romantic poetry and theater, and from other visual and literary archetypes, much of which was filtered through notions of the human psyche and of human experiential horizons that were derived from or inspired by the psychoanalytic theories of Carl Jung and that reflected the human condition in the wake of World War II." In this edition of Art Guide, we draw from Pioneers from Provincetown: The Roots of Figurative Expressionism, a catalog written by Mr. Zucker and published by the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in 2015.

It is not difficult to see why Provincetown became a painter’s settlement. It sits on the very tip of Cape Cod, surrounded by beautiful blue water, crisp golden sand, and wonderful natural light. It is a quaint village, free from bustling industry and loud transportation. There is fresh air, chirping birds, and the sounds of friends, neighbors, and strangers all happily engaged with one another. From the moment one arrives, there is a feeling of absolute freedom, vitality, and individuality.
Blessed with such natural and human virtues, Provincetown earned a place in the chronicle of American modernism and the avant-garde as a crucial pioneering location, serving as the starting point for many important American artists and acting as a bridge to New York City for many artists and artistic movements. In the late 1940s and 1950s Provincetown emerged as one of the nation’s premier art localities. The first major exhibition of Abstract Expressionists, called Forum 49, was held at 200 Commercial

Street in Provincetown in the summer of 1949. Hans Hofmann (1880–1966), who was the axis of the art scene during the forties and fifties, taught his unique method of making art in Provincetown during the summer. During this time, the art scene centered almost entirely on Abstract Expressionism. Hofmann’s approach to color and to spatial theory, which he called “Push and Pull,” set the tone for antiillusionist painting. While he urged his students to use impulsiveness in rearranging accurate details, Hofmann still used a model or set up representational still lifes in the classroom. Mainstream culture slowly but surely embraced Abstract Expressionism, and it became the staple of the art scene in America, as well as internationally. However, as art historian D. Expressionism could be channeled into figural creation.� American Figurative Expressionism had initially arisen in the 1930s, at which time the movement had been centered in Boston owing to the work done there primarily by members of a recent wave of German and European-Jewish immigrants. Stylistically, the Boston Figurative Expressionists’ fluid brushwork and disinterest in the precise academic rendering of the subject contrasted on the one hand to the realistically rendered figurative
paintings of the Social Realists and, on the other, to the technical precision of the avant-garde abstractionists. Instead, the work of this school showed affinities with the contemporary German strain of figurative painting, both in style and in subject matter. Like their German counterparts, these American painters chose predominately to portray scenes and images in which they expressed profound emotions, horrors, and fantasies in a largely allegorical manner. displays, political satire, and treatments of the theme of human mortality by members of this school all contributed to the progression of figurative painting and to the evolving definition of modern humanist art. Their paintings are not naturalistic depictions of the world around us, but rather reflections of the human condition brought forward by a new image of man, one that represents an elevated psychological and spiritual awareness. 34 | provincetownartguide.com
Similarly to Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and Jackson Pollock, figurative painters like Jay Milder (b.1934), Robert Beauchamp (1923–1995), and Irving Kriesberg, (1919–2010) practiced a mode of painting that was akin to a spiritual rite. While Mark Rothko created dramas indicative of the Romantics through his large-scale color field paintings, Jan Müller (1922–1948), Bob Thompson (1937–1966), Emilio Cruz (1938–2004), Bill Barrell (b.1932), cont. on page 57

and Tony Vevers (1926–2008) channeled the Romantics through their idylls and bacchanal scenes. Each Figurative Expressionist used the figure to produce powerful and sublime statements about the human condition and to express deeply personal emotion and spirituality. The idea that art had to be completely nonrepresentational for any kind of spirituality and humanistic dialogue to come through was a notion completely foreign to their creative principles; it was, moreover, a theory that one might well consider disproven by the work produced by these artists. For the Figurative Expressionists, art making was a powerful form of dialogue that expressed the nature of the human condition. This dialogue was presented through a dramatic process that was similar to poetry, music, and theater. The artists’ emotions and expressions were displayed in paint that was

impulsively applied (dripped, splashed, or gesturally spread) onto a flat surface. This led the art historian Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978) to describe the practitioners of this approach as “action painters.” Despite the formal and ideological affinities of their work with abstractionism, however, the humanism of the Figurative Expressionists was envisioned as a narrative that unfolded through the incorporation of figures and landscapes into allegories drawn alternatively from traditional or imagined subject matter, fueled by the artists’ experiences and spirituality.
TONY VEVER S An engagement with the lyrical expressionist paintings of Tony Vevers is essential to understanding the history and the spirit of the Provincetown School of the 1950s. Born in England in 1926, Vevers arrived in the United States in 1940, while the Blitzkrieg was in effect in England. Vevers came to Provincetown in 1955 with his wife, the artist Elspeth Halverson. The scenery and lively spirit of the summertime colony was so inspirational that in 1959 Tony and Elspeth made Provincetown their permanent home, settling into a house that was also the summertime residence of Mark Rothko. Many of Vevers’ paintings—like Winter Landscape (1955) and Winter Dunes

(1960)—reflect the seasonal changes of living year-round on the Cape. Vevers’ landscapes are emotional and imaginative expressions of his relationship with the setting around him. Like many of the other young painters, Vevers acknowledged the influence that Müller had on the Provincetown community in terms of the movement toward the figurative mode. After painting forceful landscapes that often were involved with nature, Vevers became very involved with the figure, which he often incorporated into his landscapes. 2019 Provincetown Art Guide | 61
LESTER JOHNSON Lester Johnson and Gandy Brodie were also influential mentors for many of the Provincetown Figurative Expressionists. Johnson first came to Provincetown in 1950 and connected with Müller, John Grillo, and Wolf Kahn, as well as with artists who were studying at Hofmann’s school—a group later known as the Hansa Group. Like many of the artists in Provincetown, Lester and his wife, Jo, lived in various locations—first at Edie Euler’s studio on Bradford Street, later in a 62 | provincetownartguide.com
cabin at the bottom of Race Road, and then in various places on Commercial Street. Later, in the mid-1950s, Johnson’s style transformed from pure form to action painting. Overall, he incorporated the psychological aspects of gestural painting with figural imagery and scenes from urban life. This nexus shaped the path for the astutely observed dialogue concerning the human condition that comes across through his work.
EMILIO CRUZ Emilio Cruz, who was also mentored by Brodie, was inspired by numerous “magical individuals” whom he met in Provincetown. The list of inspirational figures includes Robert Beauchamp, Franz Kline (1910–1962), Mary (b.1933) and Robert Frank (b.1924), Milton Avery (1885–1965), and Robert Motherwell. Cruz also knew of Müller, both through Thompson as well as through Müller’s widow. Cruz’s enthusiasm to be around these major artists provided inspiration for some of his earliest Figurative Expressionist canvases, which featured vibrant colorful dancing figures dripped and spread gracefully across the canvas.

I like to start a painting with a field of human gestures. The shapes and forms I emphasize start to add patterns and direction to the painting. It is here that abstraction takes over and the original gestures of the human form take on a new language.

ROBERT BEAUCHAMPS Robert Beauchamp’s painting was also strongly connected with the New York School and American painting. Beauchamp’s work after studying with Hofmann in the early 1950s constitutes a dreamlike world filled with images of animals, humans, and objects cast in a variety of scales and styles. like Seated Nude with Blue Bulls (1961), Beauchamp’s patchwork application of color reflects Hofmann’s push/pull method of separating the figure from the ground without using traditional perspective. Thus, Beauchamp’s figurations seem to appear and disappear from the ground on the plane of the canvas, creating whimsical visual environments.

SELINA TRIEFF BOB HENRY Hoffman’s school was the catalyst for Robert Henry and Selina Trieff to come to Provincetown together in 1954. Trieff had studied art history (contemporary art) and color with Mark Rothko at Brooklyn College, where she met her husband, Robert Henry, while both were studying 90 | provincetownartguide.com
with Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967). Henry had previously been a Hofmann student, in both New York and Provincetown, and Selina went on to study with Hofmann in 1954 and 1955. Both Trieff and Henry were involved with the Sun Gallery, showing alongside Vevers, Grooms, and Müller. They came to Provincetown to study at Hoffman’s school and to develop their careers.
Henry’s work unifies abstraction and figuration into surreal and idyllic scenes and vignettes, blended viscerally through sweeping bands of color. Hoffman’s teachings are evident in this work, in which perspective is built through crisp dark rectangles and abstract bands of color. Trieff’s interests encompass both personal self-exploration and an empirical exploration of the transcendentalism of Renaissance art. In much of her work, somber, predominantly monochromatic figures blend almost completely into a green or black background, with an occasional glimmer of light from her use of gold. There is a deep emotional feeling in her early paintings Standing Figure with Gold Trim and Female Head. These titles, though descriptively apt, are deliberately understated, and the spiritual impact of these works is left for the beholder to experience first hand.

BILL BARRELL Bill Barrell drew inspiration from sources ranging from early European modernists like Picasso and Matisse to American contemporaries like Thompson and Grooms. He also developed a strong affinity for color and perspective through sitting in on Hoffman’s critiques in Provincetown. Barrell paints precisely what he feels, making his style evocative of an autobiography in which he engages in a dialogue with his own history as well as with the history of art. He draws upon specific events and memories in his life as the starting point for stream of consciousness and artistic intervention.
GEORGE MCNEIL During the late 1950s the figurative boom led some successful First Generation Abstract Expressionists, including George McNeil, to transition from Abstract Expressionism to Figurative Expressionism. While McNeil’s output from the 1940s and early 1950s consists of eminent works of gestural abstraction, he had been interested in the rendering of the figure since his student days, which included studying with Andre Lhote in France. His transition to Figurative Expressionism in the mid to late 1950s made him an obvious pre-cursor for the NeoExpressionist movement in the 1980s.

By the end of the 1950s, the Figurative Expressionist painters made up the majority in the Provincetown art community, and they challenged the authority of abstraction with their new form of figurative art.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR ADAM ZUCKER is an art historian, curator,
artist, and educator from New York. He holds an M.A from the City College of New York in Art History/Museum Studies. From 2011-2014, Adam was the co-founder and artistic director of et al Projects, a Brooklyn based gallery committed to showing emerging contemporary artists and under recognized historical artists. As an independent curator, he has organized multiple gallery and museum exhibitions. His next show, Jay Milder: Unblotting the Rainbow opens at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum on September 13th (opening reception on September 27th). Zucker's writing has been published in Berkshire Fine Arts (online), Sculpture Magazine, Black Cat (art journal), and several exhibition catalogs. Adam is the founder and author of the Rhino Horn blog, a contemporary discourse on socially engaged art and figurative painting; and Artfully Learning, where he writes about contemporary art through the lens of education.
