letter from the publisher Art Guide turns ten—quite a feat to those who have been privy to the manic machinations taking place behind the curtain. Begun as a labor of love, continued, at times, as an act of lunacy, it has nonetheless brought joy as colors come together in the wee hours of the morning and galleries’ and artists’ lives weave in and out of its pages through the years. Art, whether brutal or beautiful, is a transcendence, an inspiration. It is a lovely escape from pain or the commonplace, a blunt reminder to pay attention. It engages the spirit and intellect to the extent one allows, telling different stories to different people. For this special tenth anniversary edition, Art Guide invited an array of writers with connections to Provincetown to select a favorite painting by an Outer Cape artist, a piece that has inspired them. We asked them to share, through their engagement with the work, the story it told. I have three artworks by John Dowd. It doesn’t feel like enough. I’m not generally greedy about art. No, that isn’t true – I am greedy about art. All the more so because I have a number of friends who produce marvels of various kinds, and nothing makes me happier than buying art from my friends. John’s work, however, inspires a particularly acute feeling of acquisitiveness, not only because it’s beautiful but because, more than any Provincetown artist I know, he pays proper homage to one of the Outer Cape’s most vital and stunning aspects: its constant changes of light and mood; the ever-shifting nature of its essential mysteries (at one moment it’s all sweetness and irony and generosity, at another it’s vacant and yearning and bereft); its propensity to swing from the glittery raucousness of summer to a winter quietude that feels centuries old – a settled silence that will still pervade after the parties are over, after most of the celebrants have moved on. While I love all John’s paintings, I’m particularly swoony about the nocturnal ones, like Blue Hour, Corn Hill.

That’s due, in part, to the fact that Provincetown and Truro at night are probably the Provincetown and Truro I love most ardently. I’ve been smitten, for almost thirty years now, with the slightly shrouded quality that settles in after sunset; the veil of silence that makes the lapping of the bay and the oboe-note of the foghorn more audible; the ways in which the constellations are answered by lighted windows, by streetlamps, by the occasional mini-star of a pedi-cab light, approaching from the depths of the East End. Blue Hour, Corn Hill is, as well, the perfect embodiment of John’s ability to portray what I can only call the inhabited emptiness that haunts Provincetown and Truro so much of the time. In John’s paintings, there’s always evidence of human presence (note the single lit-up window in the painting), but there are never any actual figures. As depicted in John’s art, we who come to the Outer Cape are ever so slightly ghostly. We’re there, but not wholly – not essentially – in our fleshly forms. We shed lights. We send curls of smoke up through chimneys. We are not, however – not in the world John depicts – parading around in our summer clothes. We’re not shopping or strolling or hanging out in front of Spiritus. John’s work is sometimes compared to that of Edward Hopper. I mean no disrespect to Hopper when I say that although surface similarities do 2013 Provincetown Art Guide | 17

exist, Hopper’s paintings are for the most part about the sorrow that attends human beings as we live in a world more beautiful than we are. When Hopper painted the Cape, he tended to give us a woman looking wistfully out a window at the landscape beyond the glass, or an elderly man sitting disconsolately at his gas station, or a rather unhappy-looking couple huddled together on a porch.
Blue Hour, Corn Hill speaks to that compelling, slightly disquieting fact. The living world is transient. One naturally yearns for immortality, but there’s a terrible beauty in transience as well, and transience is, after all, the fundamental human condition. Few places in the world remind us of our ephemerality as gently but insistently as does the Outer Cape: its summer aspect of rampant fruitfulness; its crystalline winter silence; and all the days and seasons that pass between the two.
I am not, I hasten to add, in any way opposed to the depiction, in paint, of what Freud called ordinary human unhappiness. I don’t require cheerfulness in art. If anything, I’m suspicious of cheerfulness in art. John’s paintings aren’t cheerful, certainly not in the pejorative sense. They aren’t in any way trivial, or condescendingly “uplifting.” They’re suffused with a rinsing and lovely melancholy. We – we humans, I mean – are very much present in John’s paintings, but we’re ephemeral. There’s a sense that we’re here, for now. We’re inside these houses. We may be making dinner for people we love, we may be paralyzed by loneliness; we may occupy those rooms in any number of conditions. And yet, no matter how we spend our hours and days within, the houses will still be there after we’ve departed. We’re just visiting. We’re dreams the houses are having, as they go about their own ongoing existence; as they live the way trees do, at a pace too slow for the eye to perceive. 18 | provincetownartguide.com
Blue Hour, Corn Hill offers evidence of both Capes – their fecundity, and their slumber. Not to mention their tenacity. This is, after all, one scrappy and durable little finger of sand. Our children’s children will illuminate that same window. We matter. Of course we matter. But the Cape matters in a way that transcends our taking of shelter there, even if we do so for decades. John captures the subvert life of the seemingly inanimate. He gives us, in his paintings, the life we’ve been granted, and gives us as well the world that will continue after we’re gone. The museum staff kept pointing out Charles W. Hawthorne’s His First Voyage to me; I thought it was a hint that I would do well to get out of town.
words on pictures I was the youngest volunteer the Provincetown Heritage Museum had ever had. For two summers when I was in my early twenties, I sat at the museum’s admission desk in the chilly foyer for a few hours a week. The museum filled the former Methodist church that has since become the new Provincetown Public Library. The desk took up the left-hand side of the room. Directly across from it hung my company for the summer: Ross Moffett’s Plowing amid the Dunes. Moffett’s teacher Hawthorne’s His First Voyage dominated the space above the doorway leading to the next room. Both were there only temporarily.

My shifts in the museum were very quiet. The smell of cut grass, mixed with smoke from the caretaker’s cigar, drifted inside to where I sat. I followed First Voyage Boy’s blue gaze, which seemed to burn through the door of the museum and down to the harbor. I knew the look; the kid was already gone. But it was Plowing amid the
Dunes that weighed on me. I found the title bitterly funny—what kind of people would even try to farm in the midst of sand dunes? Oh, right, I thought, my people. My whaling and fishing ancestors were Methodist-convert Portuguese, Patrícios who had changed their name to Patrick, and a few Provincetown Yankees going back 200 years. My parents had made their living here, too, selling salvage and surplus for decades. Even as I dreamed of moving to New York like a summer person, I couldn’t help imagining my relatives’ lives as I sat alone in the silence of their former church. I examined the staircase to my left. Congregation after congregation walking together to the upstairs pews had worn the steps down in uneven patterns—I saw tiny hollows, bays, and tidal pools near the centers of the soft wood steps. These seem to have since been sanded out during the library renovations. I longed for the sound of footsteps as I stared at Moffett’s painting. Moffett often included one spot of bold color, usually red or orange, in his scenes—but in this painting this is subdued. While a characteristic strip of light green defines part of the field, reds are limited to the muted burgundy of one farmer’s jacket, and the slightly brighter red stripe in the white horse’s collar. The sea is far out of sight, and the scene, unlike so many others, is more about the work than the dunes—inspired, perhaps, by the family farm in Clearfield, Iowa, that Moffett left behind. I thought, this is an artist who understands winter here.
Something disturbed me about the painting. I looked at the outline of the fearsome all-black horse behind the white one. I followed the long dark furrow that connects the horses to the farmers and cuts through the foreground. Then I figured it out. The bright white horse, with all its detail, coexists in the same plane with the dim, nearly faceless farmer at the plow in the foreground. Both farmers seem to work in a shadow all their own, a shadow that I decided could not be fully explained. Not long after I volunteered in the museum, a friend brought my parents a photograph from the early 1960s. It was the oldest photograph of the two of them together that I had ever seen; they were on a date soon after they’d met. The photo was taken at an opening at the former Chrysler Art Museum—in the same church building where I spent that summer with Plowing amid the Dunes. The photographer captured my mother and father standing in front of one of the paintings on display. The background was murky, and it took me a minute to recognize the painting. But then I saw it all—those looming dunes, the familiar field, the straining horses pulling their way out of the scene, and the bent backs of the two farmers. Oona Patrick is a Provincetown native who now lives in Brooklyn. Her nonfiction has appeared in a number of journals and books, and she works on the DISQUIET International Literary Program in Lisbon, Portugal.

My art evolves from my imagination. The paintings depict compilations of places I have been or seen. Visible are the contours of Provincetown but also the colors and shapes of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. After formal training in sculpture I began to feel a need for color. I paint as I sculpted, building up the surface with layers of paint, giving me the same feeling I get building with clay or plaster, but adding the dimension of color. The use of houses and landscapes allows experimentation with contrasting colors and planes of light.

A small John Mulcahy portrait greets me at the entrance of my Provincetown apartment, coming and going. I look at him all the time. With watch cap perched high atop his head and a long white beard on the other end, his head is elongated. I call the picture a modern form of expressionism – he’s there but it could be someone else. That’s what happens when you paint yourself with a pallet knife, when you know what you’re doing. The left side of his face is a shadow of reds, blues, white and gold. The right side of his face has seen the light with more gold and more white. It’s as if there are two sides of him, it’s as if the two sides make the whole man. To me, this recalls literature. A novelist uses his own life to create characters. He could use his shadowy self to form the antagonist. He could use his self-less self to form the protagonist. But, really, that’s much too simple for a great artist. Lines are not so clearly drawn in literature, in art or in life. I’m attracted to this specific nameless painting, perhaps, because it’s not so clean. The only lines found in it are made with a knife.

Then, I flip the picture over. There’s a wire crudely attached to the block of wood, with masking tape twisted to protect both ends. Scotch-taped underneath is slice of paper on which “John By John 2010” is handwritten. A self-sticking return address label with his Wellfleet address printed on it is near the bottom. He lived there, with his sister, until his death last November. But underneath all of that – the wire and the labels – is a landscape of dune and sky and sea. Mulcahy must have considered it a failed work, or maybe not. The different colors of oil paint that merge to recreate his hometown are now scratched from abuse. And I realize that this one little block of painted wood contains an entire life. It is both the good man and the bad man, it is his beautifully flawed home. It is everything.

delight cottage And still what we see is what we know and remember, or are told and believe, so the insides of spaces hold meaning though they appear as plain walls or patches of color, impenetrable to the eye. How much just beyond, within, glimpsed, imagined, informs the scene as memory – painting can do this, layering one thing on top of another, this scene reading: fence, bare garden, tree, then house, house, house, the old Cold Storage looming to block the corner of another house, and it comes round again in greys and rust-colored patches, the eye follows as it comes round as smokestack, house, shed – or maybe garage – you can’t always be sure, it comes round as the street bends away, suggesting onward. Lines making planes, and shapes stacked tight, impinging, one on another. One man walking. Flint-colored sky. And the one dazzling house with its frieze and its scallops, its stripes of yellow, and cut-out lace of name: Delight. The bright vacation cottage, summer a memory now, a half-raised shade in the window of an empty room. And still, how many worlds inside this shell-grey world? What we see is remembered: the men stacking crates behind grey dreary walls of the fish plant – the women in kitchens, steam of soup, or perhaps it is laundry day. Bread rising. A man walking – where? – toward the painter, as if toward us, and the artist watching from a window to see her son coming home, in no hurry, his hands at his sides. One world laid over another, one world still. And summer a stroke of gold, a filigree carved in wood, and a half-raised shade in a cottage window.

There is an exquisite comfort in the jeweled tones of a Packard painting.
Her canvases hold colors that caress, an often dusky palette that invites the pupils to relax, to pull close the waning light, to seek the point beyond the horizon. It would be too easy to call a piece like Two Boats a seascape. It is infinity. It is a silent, poetic, unrelenting pause in cacophony. It evokes immeasurable loneliness and melancholy, euphoric emptiness and emancipation. It is abstracted isolation in search of togetherness and togetherness in search of isolation. Stepping inside this painting, one—simply—is. Anne’s world, in its large canvases and expansive horizons, its ghostly, spare shapes, its taut shrouds of opaque atmospheres, is the land of the human condition. EXT. PROVINCETOWN NEIGHBORHOOD – 1950 – DAY Nestled between a stretch of cottages and an expanse of sand dunes is a flat, open field bisected by railroad tracks. The trains no longer run here, so the ties and rails are overgrown with beach grass. At the “end of the line” is a lone abandoned railroad car - an orange-painted CABOOSE that was once used as a freight office. Its wheels have been braced and a makeshift stairway leads to the rear door. We notice smoke rising from a stove pipe on the roof... INT. CABOOSE - DAY A fire roars in a tiny wood stove and a pot of coffee warms on a burner. There’s a small table and a couple of chairs, a cupboard with canned goods, a wash basin and pitcher, and a shelf with an oil lamp and a few books. Someone has transformed the old “freight office” into a Spartan residence. In a far corner is a sleeping cot and a MAN makes the bed with military-like precision. He is in his early 60s, body lean and well-muscled. The kind of body you get from years of tough, physical labor. His cold blue eyes and shock of close-cropped white hair stand in stark contrast to a deeply tanned leathery face.

This is a hard man who’s lived a hard life. He begins to pour a cup of coffee, but pauses when he glimpses something out a small, smoky window. He returns the pot to the stove, the cup to the table. From under the cot he retrieves a RIFLE. EXT. CABOOSE - DAY It’s damned cold outside, but the Man, only in a T-shirt and dungarees, is oblivious to the frigid temperature. Moving quietly, but with great purpose, he descends the makeshift staircase and searches the nearby sand dunes... EXT. SAND DUNES - DAY Weaving through the grass is a FOX, and when it sees the Man, it freezes. EXT. CABOOSE/SAND DUNES - DAY The Man aims the rifle... But when he sees THREE FOX KITS running to catch up to their mother... He can’t shoot. He just can’t. The fox and her kits disappear into the dunes and the Man turns to the west. The sun is so bright he has to shut his eyes. Now feeling the chill, he shivers and hurries back to the warmth of the caboose. Before entering, he steals one last look at the dunes... and sees nothing but a vast expanse of sand and beach grass. He betrays a hint of a smile and returns to his coffee. Mark Protosevich is a screenwriter whose credits include THE CELL, I AM LEGEND, THOR, and the upcoming OLDBOY, directed by Spike Lee. 90 | provincetownartguide.com
