The extraordinary agricultural resource of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano This guide was conceived to draw the Reader’s attention to a resource of the utmost importance for the Milan Metropolitan Area: farming in the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is a park that forms a metropolitan green belt with an approximate surface area of 47,000 hectares, little more than 35,000 of which are used for agricultural purposes. Despite the high level of urbanisation, the considerable presence of infrastructures, almost 75% of the Park’s territory is used for farming, which is, therefore, the main activity of the territorial and environmental protection system. The main goal of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is, therefore, to preserve agricultural land as evidence of a fertile and productive plain at the service of both residents and the metropolis. This guide, which has reached the fourth edition, invites the Reader to explore the agricultural land that stretches over the peri-urban strip situated to the south of the Lombardy region’s capital city, but especially to make the most of and spread information about its productive system, along with the many activities proposed by the farms, which operate there. Agriculture developed by farms in the Park has a dual importance. Indeed, on the one hand it performs its primary function with the production of foodstuffs and, on the other hand, it significantly contributes to the production of intangible assets, which are configured as precious services for citizens of the metropolis, which is embraced by the Park. This combination of primary production and services meets the needs of a new agricultural model defined as multifunctional. This guide adopts such a perspective to describe and make the most of services and activities conceived and developed by the Park’s multifunctional farms in the course of time, describing how this practice has been implemented for several years. Reading the information sheets of farms present in the Park contributes to underscore the ability shown by farmers to meet the local demand with an increasingly wide-ranging and diversified offer. Hence, it is no easy feat to list the activities, initiatives and services provided by multifunctional agriculPARCO AGRICOLO SUD MILANO — 7

ture. Particularly, it is not a “finite” process, as it is based on the continuous intention, expressed by the companies, to develop ever new horizons and perspectives. The information sheets in this guide reveal that rural hospitality can be found barely a few kilometres from Milan, in warm and refined settings, which are harmonious with natural open spaces. The catering services underscore the value of typical local products, offering a cuisine that stands apart for ancient Lombard flavours, combined with ongoing gastronomic experimentation. Raw material transformation techniques produce refined cheeses, cured meats, bread, honey, jams and much more besides. Cultural and recreational services are diversified, where the land tells the story of these places through charming renovated farmhouses disseminated in the typical landscape of the Lombard plain. The visitor can explore many paths and itineraries, discovering refined settings charged with nature and landscape interest. Visitors can explore the remains of the Po valley’s ancient forest. Leaving behind the chaos of the city, they can either walk or cycle along irrigation ditches or near springs, or even admire the perfectly cultivated seamless stretch of agricultural fields, the thick hydrographic network, the hedges and alley cropping, and the numberless country roads. All this makes up the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano today. This landscape is the outcome of the slow and century-long work of man, the result of continuous transformations, which are indissolubly bound to the history of agricultural production of one of Europe’s most fertile areas. Moreover, many farms presented in the guide are Educational Farms, which offer educational services with dedicated educational paths. They welcome children, families and schools with projects centred on the themes of the Park, on sustainable agricultural practices and on the transformation of raw materials. The relations established over the years between the farms, teachers and families, and the active involvement of children through workshops and practical experience have created opportunities for meetings and enrichment, genuine local centres of environmental and nutritional education. In the course of the past decade, many companies have developed and implemented sales of their produce, establish8 — PARCO AGRICOLO SUD MILANO

ing direct and often ongoing relations with the consumer. The custom of purchasing on the farm has bridged the gap between city and country, with the doubtless advantage of increasing the knowledge residents have of the area and of the farms situated in the Park. This also enhances appreciation of the quality of farm-to-table products, with positive repercussions on the environment by shortening the production chain. Finally, multifunctional agriculture is also environmental sustainability. The path of the Marchio di Qualità Ambientale [Environmental Quality Brand] issued by the Park, in the three levels of gold, silver and bronze, identifies the farms committed to implement sustainable environmental actions not only in terms of production but also of social, cultural and recreational services issued and offered to metropolitan residents. Moreover, it must be said that various farms are also Punti Parco [Park Points]. The main purpose of Punti Parco is to bring the Park closer to the residents by becoming a widespread and direct communication channel. Farms hosting Punti Parco develop, in partnership with the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, initiatives and events, while also distributing information to the public about the area’s cultural, historical, agricultural, environmental and nutritional treasures. This continuous communication and dissemination process offers the Reader the opportunity to learn about the various initiatives even directly on site. With its farms, Parco Agricolo Sud Milano plays a leading role in promoting services for rural tourism, which can be accessed all year round. Direct relations with its agricultural entities propose and implement a vision of modernity combined with tradition. Hence, we hope this guide gives everybody the chance to discover and explore the Park and its amazing wealth.

How to use this guide

The guide is organised in three main sections: — the first provides alphabetical and geographical indexes of the farms; — the second presents theme indexes for a transversal interpretation of production categories and activities; — the third provides the information sheets of 80 farms based in the Park that offer multifunctional services.

Geographical areas: west, south, east. The Park is divided into three geographical areas, each of which has been associated with a colour: west, south and east. Besides the classical alphabetical index, the Reader may, thus, consult a geographical index designed to easily locate farms in the area. Every farm that has a Punto Parco is indicated with the logo on the farm’s information sheet, and a yellow dot on the map. Punti Parco are info points, which promote initiatives and activities organised by Parco Agricolo Sud Milano.

THE PARK EXPERIENCE The wealth of experiences proposed is presented by theme indexes conceived to encourage the Reader to explore the Park starting from his/her own interests and needs. Every index includes the main categories of the offer and the corresponding farms. The Reader can explore the details of production and activities, which integrate the overall offer, but are not included in the indexes.

Calendar of farm produce: to know the variety of the Park’s vegetable and fruit cultivation, organised by seasonal produce. Products: to explore the offer of agricultural produce, either fresh or transformed, and to identify the farms that produce and sell them. Catering services: to discover where, how and when to taste the Park’s produce. Hospitality: to stay on farms. Educational activities: to learn about farming culture, techniques and trades, and become aware of sustainability. Educational activities are organised by themes (beekeeping workshops, transformation workshops...) and by target categories (activities for families, schools, adults and companies). Venues for events: to identify the possibilities of organising ceremonies, conferences and parties or of renting spaces on the farms.

THE FARMS Every farm has a dedicated information sheet, which includes: a brief introduction, details of the produce and activities offered, and contact information. The Marchio di Qualità Ambientale issued by the Park to farms committed to implement environmentally sustainable activities is also indicated. Cascina Montano A Ca' Del Galimba

Cascina Montano, situated about one kilometre from the Gaggiano city centre, preserves the distinctive traits of the Lombard farmhouse. The farm specialises in cereal production. Particularly, its 60 hectares of land are dedicated to the cultivation of traditional varieties of rice, such as Carnaroli, Vialone nano and Arborio. There is a Farm Shop for the direct purchase of farm produce onsite. A holiday farm catering service launched in recent years and open by reservation only serves traditional Lombard cuisine, making use of produce from both the farm and the area.

Azienda Agricola Altrocchi Fratelli

Since the early 1900s, the Altrocchi family has been committed to farm activities near Rocca Brivio in San Giuliano Milanese. The farm has dedicated ca. 60 hectares to environmentally friendly organic farming. Poultry and rabbits are bred onsite with natural methods. In fact, they are free range animals, who are not given antibiotics, and are fed with cereal grown on the farm. At the Farm Shop customers can purchase the various farm produce and also products of other farms in the area.

Azienda Agricola Apicoltura Veca

The educational and holiday farm Apepè is situated in the historical Cascina Linterno Farmhouse in Milan. The hives are mainly distributed in the farmhouses of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Bee Happy Family is the onsite Farm Shop, which sells honey and beehive products, besides the produce of neighbouring farms. The farm organises environmental education courses for children, and also courses for young beekeepers. Events, parties and teaching-educational activities can also be organised for schools and families.

Azienda Agricola Arrigoni

Arrigo Arrigoni’s farm focuses on cereal production, particularly rice production. The beauty of the farm’s ancient heart, located in the Bestazzo hamlet, convinced the owner to renovate and convert part of the buildings into a rural hospitality service. A visit can also be organised to the family-owned “Cusago Woods”, an example of the ancient Lombard Po Valley forest. Finally, the farm offers the possibility of horse-riding at the nearby federal centre “Il Grifone”, in Vermezzo.

Cascina Battivacco

Cascina Battivacco is a landmark of the rural tradition of Barona, a historical district in the suburbs of Milan. Since 1965 it has been the site of Società Agricola Fedeli, a family-run farm that specialises in cereal production with 150 hectares dedicated to the production of rice and 20 hectares allocated to the production of fodder for bovines. The meat is sold at the Farm Shop, along with the rice and produce of other farms. Rooms and apartments can also be rented in the midst of the green countryside, a short distance from Milan.

Azienda Agricola Bonetti has stood in Cascina Cologno, in the San Giuliano Milanese municipality, since 1935. It specialises in cereal production and zootechnical farming, breeding Friesian breed cows to produce high quality milk obtained with the utmost care for animal nutrition and well-being. Both at the farm and in some neighbouring municipalities, Azienda Agricola Bonetti has installed automatic milk vending machines, which operate on a 24h basis. Cascina Caldera

Cascina Caldera, which dates back to the 16th century, is situated in Parco delle Cave, Milan. The farm grows forage and cereal, which is used to feed the animals bred on the farmhouse. Besides breeding bovines, goats and barnyard animals, the farm offers a boarding service for horses. It is the ideal site for guided tours, cultural and recreational activities for both the public and schools. Every first Sunday in spring and autumn, the cascina organises a market for produce from farms in the Distretto Agricolo Milanese (DAM).

Azienda Agricola Camisani

Azienda Agricola Camisani dates back to 1860, and its cultivations cover a surface area of ca. 150 hectares in the Gaggiano area. The main product is rice, which is directly milled on the farm, in Cascina Molino di Sotto, where it is manually hulled to obtain a product that is not subjected to processing. The farms stables are home to some beef cattle, pigs and poultry. These, along with vegetables and rice, can be purchased by booking them at the Farm Shop. The Camisani family also welcomes small groups at the holiday farm where traditional Lombard cuisine is served.

Cascina Campazzo

Cascina Campazzo is situated in the Parco Agricolo Ticinello, 600 m from the underground station of Piazza Abbiategrasso, Milan. It is a typical Lombard farmhouse with closed courtyard, and which stands apart for the oratory dedicated to St. Ignatius of Antioch, which dates back to the 18th century, and for the ancient oven that functions to date. Since 1952, the Falappi family has managed this zootechnical farm, which counts 130 bovines. The farm organises educational, cultural and environmental activities in partnership with Associazione Parco Ticinello. Some water meadows can be visited near the farmhouse. They provide important evidence of the agricultural history of Lombardy.

Cascina Campi

Cascina Campi is a cereal-producing zootechnical farm situated in the Trenno area, in Milan. The farmhouse, which was built in the early 1800s, has recently launched a farm holiday service with boarding for horses, besides its cultivations. The association Campacavallo, based in the farmhouse, organises emotional horse-riding courses, a soft circus for children and summer holiday camps. Besides organising various workshops, Cascina Campi is an Educational Farm with activities for schools. Cascina Cantalupo

Cascina Cantalupo is a cereal-producing farm, which specialises in the production of rice and other cereal. Built in the 1700s, it developed near the villa of the ancient Milanese patrician family Vismara. The farm’s produce can be purchased at the Farm Shop, along with the products of other neighbouring farms. Part of the structure adjacent to the manor house, specifically the former dormitories of the rice weeders, has been renovated and converted into a museum of period farming equipment and tools. The museum is open for school tours, which should be arranged in advance.

Cascina Carla is situated in the Cornaredo Municipality, on the provincial road SP 162, which links Cusago to Bareggio. Built in the 1900s, the farm was a leader in dairy cow breeding at the time of the Dubini family from Milan. Cascina Carlotta inherits a farming tradition that can be traced back to almost 400 years, and which has been maintained with care and passion by the Viganò family. Cassinetta dei Ronchi is a cereal-producing and zootechnical farm in the Gudo Visconti municipality. The primary crops are rice and forage, which are used to feed beef cattle, mainly of the Piedmontese breed, pigs and barnyard animals. The farm is highly multifunctional. Cascina Cattabrega is situated in Gaggiano, just 15 km from the Milan city centre. For the past 60 years, the Dominoni family has managed the ca. 70 hectare estate, which features buildings that date back to the 17th century. Cascina Contina, Social Farming

Cascina Contina is a residential community, the first Punto Parco of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, run by Contina Cooperativa Sociale. The Bricchi family has run Agriturismo da Pippo, in Cassignanica, since 2002. The farm, which was a leper hospital during the plague in the 1600s, presents the features of a Lombard closed courtyard. It specialises in cereal and forage, which are grown to produce fodder for the cow – calf line bovine breeding activity. The 16th century Cascina Molino Mora is situated to the south-east of the Liscate settlement, and has been managed by the Della Bassa brothers since 1959. Azienda Agricola Fratelli Rossi has run Cascina Tavernasco, in Noviglio, since 1927. The farm raises dairy cows and beef cattle. It also specialises in the cultivation of several rice varieties, including Carnaroli, Arborio and Vialone Nano. Cultivations also include flint maize for polenta, which is stone-ground in the farm’s mill. Products are partly used in the farm’s catering facility (open by reservation), and are partly sold at the farm shop, at Milan’s Mercato della Terra, and through Ethical purchasing groups (gruppi di acquisto solidali or GAS). Azienda Agricola Fratelli Scotti stretches over a surface area of ca. 180 hectares in the Mediglia Municipality. Cascina Gaggioli, a typical farmhouse with square courtyard, is a cereal-producing and zootechnical farm with certified organic cultivation of corn, rice and wheat. Beef cattle are also raised on the farm. Situated a few hundred metres from the urban confines and from the last stop of streetcar no. 24, the property covers a surface area of 60 hectares. Azienda Agricola Garbelli is situated in the Municipality of Zibido San Giacomo, and has an area of ca. 120 hectares mainly cultivated with rice. The Caldi family has managed Cascina Guastalla since 1927. The farm has an extension of ca. 100 hectares mainly cultivated to produce rice, wheat and soy. Azienda Agricola Cascina Melone di Agrived (Il Mulino) is a large rice growing farm situated to the south of Milan, in the Casarile Municipality, ca. 1 km from Cappelletta di Santa Maria in Campo. Azienda Agrituristica Isola Maria performs organic breeding of bovines of the Italian Friesian breed, feeding them only with green grass, hay from stable meadows, alfalfa and cereal. The farm is run by Niccolò Reverdini and Sebastiano Canavesio. The estate, which covers 15 hectares between Cisliano and Corbetta, has been cultivated since 1996 with the organic method, and by rotational farming of vegetables, cereal, forage and meadows. The fields are surrounded by 16 hectares of the Riazzolo Woods, the residual ancient Po valley forest. The farm buildings date back to the early 1900s. Cascina Montalbano features cultivated fields and cereal processing, particularly rice, while Cascina Mirasole, which specialises in milk production, has modern stables. In 2017 Cascina Montalbano launched the Educational Farm to introduce children to the culture and values of the rural world. They also opened a Farm Shop where farm produce can be purchased.

Azienda Agricola Paghini e Farina is situated in the Mettone Hamlet of Lacchiarella, at the southern border of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. It is the outcome of the merger of two farms managed by the namesake families. Azienda Agricola Pasqualini Giovanni, situated in the Settimo Milanese Municipality, has decided to develop a small direct sales service of milk via an automatic vending machine. Azienda Agricola Cascina Pioltino

Cascina Pioltino is a cereal-producing zootechnical farm in the Zibido San Giacomo Municipality. It specialises in beef cattle and dairy cow breeding. Part of the production is used in its holiday farm, which can seat 80 guests for a meal. The typical Milanese cuisine makes the most of the raw materials produced on the farm. There is an 18th century church, which is still consecrated, and an ancient icehouse (one of the few to have survived in the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano), a heritage of the time when these farms hosted hundreds of farm hands. The holiday farm features a large garden to relax and spend time with the animals.

Cascina Poiago

Cascina Poiago has been run by the Bartoli family for several generations. This ancient building dates back to the early 18th century. It was historically renowned for rice production, which is to date the farm’s main produce. The farm, situated in Mediglia, is entirely run by the Ranghetti family’s women. It is a cereal-producing zootechnical farm that counts ca. 120 dairy cows. Rice is produced by minimising the environmental impact by using spring water and excluding chemical products from the processing phases. Azienda Agricola Repossi, in Cornaredo, was established in the early 1900s for horticulture and fruit production. In the 1950s it switched to flower growing and garden maintenance. Azienda Agricola Fedeli was established in 1909 in Locate di Triulzi, at Cascina Resentera, which is still the farm’s main branch and major producer of both rice and milk. Isidoro Rivolta’s farm in Albairate with a zootechnical calling has created a small dairy to process its milk, and a Farm Shop to sell its products, which include cheese and, in summer, ice cream. In 2017 the Radaelli family established a brewery, which mainly uses the farm’s raw materials to produce homemade beer. Cascina Sant’Alberto

Società Agricola Sant’Alberto was established in 1999 as Cascina Triulza, and moved to Cascina Sant’Alberto in Rozzano in 2003. The farm features cereal and forage cultivation, and is transitioning to organic farming. 2003 witnessed the launch of a renaturing project of 20 hectares, when 12,000 shrubs and tall plants were planted. Another 5,000 plants were planted in 2019 to complete the project. The area is acknowledged as a wildlife Protection Sanctuary. The Farm partners the non-profit cooperative Madre Terra in creating a 5,000 m2 hop field and a vegetable garden. It also collaborates with the non-profit association Orto in Fiore to organise training courses. The farm has a beekeeper and a bread-making oven.

Azienda Agricola Sgariboldi Luigi

The Sgariboldi family have bred pigs in Tainate, in the Noviglio Municipality, since 1973. Tainate is one of the furthermost small towns at the edge of Milan. It is completely surrounded by fields, irrigation ditches and rows of poplars. The cattle breeding farm counts ca. 1,400 pigs, fed with cereal produced directly on the farm. Most of the cattle is intended for the production of dry-cured hams, both Prosciutto di Parma and Prosciutto di San Daniele, while a small number of cattle is processed following the post-war recipes of grandfathers, which in their simplicity do not envisage the use of gluten, milk flours and colouring.

Azienda Agricola StraBerry

Azienda Agricola StraBerry is a recently established production facility situated at the eastern borders of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, in the Cassina de’ Pecchi Municipality. The farm specialises in the production of small fruits in an overall area of 54 hectares, a small part of which exploits the presence of heated photovoltaic greenhouses to grow wild strawberries. The external part is dedicated to the cultivation of other fruits, vegetables and cereal. There is a Farm Shop for the direct purchase of all farm produce, even personally picking the items from the vegetable garden.

Azienda Agricola Tessera Antonio Giuseppe

The Tessera farm is based in the Cascina Giustina farmhouse in Zibido San Giacomo, an ancient house built in the 1700s. The Tessera family has run the place since 1937, specialising over the years in rice cultivation and in cattle breeding, first with dairy cows and later with beef cattle. Pig breeding was later added to produce handmade cured meats in the farm’s processing workshop. The farm recently extended the offer by opening a holiday farm, which highlights its produce according to traditional Lombard cuisine. There is a Farm Shop for the direct purchase of farm produce onsite.

Azienda Agricola Verga

The Verga family’s farm is situated in Cascina Colombera, near Quinto Romano area, to the north of Parco delle Cave, Milan, where forage, cereal and pulses are cultivated to feed their own animals. The farm relies on an external slaughter house, but the maturation phases are directly supervised by the farm. Azienda Agricola Verga has opened a Farm Shop to make the most of its produce. Customers will find high quality meat cuts that are always fresh, along with other produce of neighbouring farms.

Azienda Agricola Cascina Vione

Azienda Agricola Cascina Vione is situated in Basiglio, and stretches over a surface area of ca. 330 hectares, near the Vione ‘Locus de Villiono’ hamlet, which is already mentioned in documents that date back to 1086. Today the farm specialises in rice production for leading Italian rice mills, and partly for direct sales after processing. The Farm Shop was opened in 2010. Besides Viglione rice, it sells many other products from other carefully selected farms.

Azienda Agricola Vivai Natura

Vivai Natura is a farm situated in Basiglio, where a nursery has been created with a large variety of ornamental bamboo, besides the family-run farm, which carries out cultivations and cattle breeding in compliance with natural farming methods. The facility also includes an educational farm for schools and families. There is a small poultry farm where free range hens can peck in the fields all day. Their integrated feed only comprises cereal grown on the farm. The farm’s produce can be purchased at the Farm Shop.

Azienda Agricola Zipo

The Pozzi family has run Azienda Agricola ZIPO for three generations in the historical farmhouse Ca’ Grande in Zibido San Giacomo, an area featuring agriculture, irrigation canals, wild fauna and cycleways. Besides the environmentally-friendly agricultural production, and dairy cattle breeding, Azienda Agricola ZIPO also offers a B&B service. The Farm Shop sells homemade cheese, rice grown and hulled at the farmhouse, and also produce of neighbouring farms. Cascina Zucca

Azienda Agricola Cascina Zucca was established in Corbetta in May 2017. The farm counts ca. 40 Chamois goats, whose milk is manually converted into fresh and semi-aged cheese directly in the farm’s dairy. A small Farm Shop has also been opened, where visitors can purchase dairy products, besides honey produced from the farm’s hives. Some spaces have been fitted out as educational workshops for schools, for kindergarten children or merely for families who wish to learn about the farmhouse and the world of agriculture.
