OUTDOOR LIVING

Fraser Wingback, $799.

Hello Summer! Well, Christmas is over for another year and now we can just revel in the joys of Summer – long hot days transitioning into balmy nights with the scent of Jasmine and Gardenias perfuming the evening air. Our Summer plans are simple – at last being able to catch up with family and friends (and the children’s friends) over simple meals made from fresh, seasonal produce. There will be less time spent in the kitchen and more time eating and chatting.

We’ll spend days at the beach, come home covered in sand and watch a movie before hopping into bed and enjoying a blissful night’s sleep. I’ve decided not to make any New Years’ resolutions this year, so I don’t have to stress when I break them in February. Well maybe that is my resolution – to avoid stress! Whatever your Summer plans are have safe, happy and healthy 2022.

The Great Outdoors This season embrace outdoor living and make it as comfortable as your living room. Your outdoor space should be relaxed and inviting - add cushions in your favourite colour and linen throws. They’re perfect around your shoulders as the day starts to cool.

Planters are a great way to add colour to a garden or patio without commitment. Plant annuals in different colours each season to create a new feel in your outdoor area. A group of three planters in the same colour but different shapes creates extra impact.

R EC LA I M ED TEA K Teak is one of the most beautiful timbers in the world. The warm, luscious honey-brown colour and tight, dense grain are highly sought after especially for outdoor furniture. It only becomes more beautiful over time – weathering to a beautiful soft grey colour. Our Reclaimed Teak is salvaged from unused buildings and bridges and doesn’t require any living trees to be cut.

Different Strokes You may be familiar with Helen Lovett’s exquisite watercolours that we reproduce as framed prints, canvases, and placemats. She uses the fluidity of the medium to create paintings that are beautiful fields of colour or soft, almost transparent washes of colour – we love them and hope you do too. Helen Lovett’s love of drawing was ignited at a young age by an aunt who had her own studio and happily spent time nurturing Helen’s skills and sparking a lifelong passion for drawing. Although she trained as an Occupational Therapist, Helen’s love of pencils and drawing drew her into engineering drafting which required a very precise, mathematical mind and talent.

Helen’s sketchbook and paints travel everywhere with her so whatever inspires her becomes a gorgeous watercolour in her journal. Her creativity was not limited to drawing and always needed an outlet. After her first baby was born, she started sewing things for the home, moving to clothes then onto making teddy bears before a friend suggested she try botanical art. So she enrolled in classes with world renowned botanical artist Jenny Phillips and was encouraged to keep a sketch book – thus her daily illustrated journal has grown from there. Helen’s sketchbook and paints travel everywhere with her so whatever inspires her becomes a gorgeous watercolour in her journal - sometimes with words as a diary.

STYL E ST E AL After a recent renovation and the installation of a window seat at her Mornington home, Helen has chosen a selection of our coastal cushions to complement her sea view.

Recently, we sat down to have a chat with Helen and to have a look through her latest sketch books which was such a treat. Turning the pages is a beautiful journey there are seasonal fruit and vegetables, flowers, foliage, sailing boats, vintage cars, her dog Lokkie, scenery – it’s hard to choose which ones we want to re-produce as they are all so gorgeous. Helen is a self-confessed homemaker she loves cooking and her plans for the Summer are to entertain - friends, children and grandchildren - the more the merrier. Her other interests include tennis and golf. She tells us she is enthusiastic but not very good though somehow, we doubt that!

Turning the pages is a beautiful journey - there are seasonal fruit and vegetables, flowers, foliage, sailing boats, vintage cars, her dog Lokkie, scenery - it’s hard to choose which ones we want to re-produce as they are all so gorgeous. Helen is also a mad sailor, taking to the water a couple of times a week in a very pretty European boat that is the much admired along the coast. With all these other interests and hobbies, it’s amazing she has time to produce such wonderful works of art.

If you’re visiting our Mornington store you may see her there – it’s her local Provincial store and she’s always popping in to see what is new. After a recent renovation and the installation of a window seat with sea views, she has piled a selection our cushions.

Salmon Gravlax Gravlax is a minimum effort, maximum impact recipe. Once you’ve made it once, it will become your go to dish. Slice it and serve it in the middle of the table – guests can help themselves to as little (or as much) as they want. It can be served as an entrée, a light lunch with a green salad or, if friends are dropping in for drinks, serve it on pumpernickel rounds, pop on some mustard sauce, add a rolled slice of gravlax and a small sprig of dill. INGRED I EN TS

ME T H OD

Gravlax • 2x 500g pieces skin-on salmon fillet, both cut from the centre of the fish. Ask your fishmonger to pin-bone it for you • 500g flaky sea salt • 400g sugar • 8 juniper berries, crushed (optional) • Small bunch dill roughly chopped (stems and all) • ¼ cup gin (optional) Mustard Sauce • 3 tbsp Dijon mustard • Squeeze of lemon juice • 2 tsp caster sugar • 1-2 tsp dried dill • Salt + pepper • 2-3 tbsp sunflower oil

1. Pat the salmon dry with kitchen paper and run your hands over the flesh to see if there are any stray small bones – if there are, use a pair of tweezers to pull them out. Set the salmon fillets aside. 2. Mix the salt, sugar, juniper and dill, add the gin if using. Use a glass, ceramic or stainless steel dish. Place 1/3 of the mixture in the dish, lay the first fillet of salmon skinside down and then pack another 1/3 of the cure over the flesh. Top with the 2nd fillet, flesh-side down. Cover the dish tightly with cling film. 3. Put another tray on top. Weigh the tray down with a couple of tins or bottles and place in the fridge for at least 48 hrs or up to 4 days, turning the fish over every 12 hours or so. The longer you leave it, the more cured it will become. The mixture will liquify – so make sure the dish has sides. 4. To make the mustard sauce, mix the mustard, lemon juice, sugar, and dried dill in a bowl until well combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Gradually whisk in the oil until you have a loose, thick dressing. Add more oil as needed. Pour into a small serving bowl. 5. To serve, unwrap the fish and brush off the marinade with kitchen paper. Thinly slice the gravlax at an angle and present on a large serving platter. Serve with the mustard sauce and buttered rye bread.

Baked Ricotta Cheesecake This delicious lemony cheesecake looks impressive but is really easy and can be made the day ahead so there’s nothing for you to do on the day except remove from the fridge, top with seasonal berries or stone fruit, and enjoy! I NGR ED I EN TS

Sweet Dreams A bedroom to dream of and to dream in. Summer bedrooms are best with softer colours and lighter bedlinen. The white bedside tables and upholstered bench are the colour inspiration for the heavily textured coverlet. When used over the whole bed adds lightness to the whole room but works just as well with darker quilt covers, folded over the bottom of the bed.

Isabelle Bedhead, from $1199 Sinclair Bedside Table, $449 Creole Table Lamp, $159.95 Antwerp Linen in White + Charcoal Stripe, from $59.95 Antwerp Linen in Natural, from $59.95 Pembroke Coverlet 240x260, $299.95 Yashi Cushion 30x45, $69.95 Lars Bench, $1699 Hex Cushion 50x60, $79.95 Nisha Throw, $129.95 Shastri Rug, $499

Three reasons to love coverlets 1 Used as a lightweight blanket, coverlets are quite versatile. If you’re a hot sleeper and find your quilt too heavy in warmer weather, use a coverlet over your sheets. In Winter, a coverlet can be a great extra layer for warmth.

2 Coverlets are a great way to introduce another texture to the bed. Coverlets were historically quilted, and this is still true today with beautiful examples of traditional and more contemporary quilting helping to create beautiful bedrooms.

3 They are an easy way to change the look of a room. Fold it along the foot of the bed for a tailored look with a bit of the colour and texture showing, or cover most of the bed and enjoy seeing all of the coverlet.

An occasional chair in the bedroom is a lifesaver. A place to sit and relax in peace and quiet, prepare for the next day and have an outfit ready and waiting on the chair, or after a late night it’s a great place to put your clothes before jumping into bed. And of course – it can be taken into the living or dining room when extra seating is needed.

STY LI ST ’S TI P It’s all about textures when layering bedlinen. A natural linen bedhead sets the scene with beautiful hand pleating and buttoning, creating gorgeous shadows. The combination of textures, patterns and subtle colours is serene and welcoming. We’ve echoed the colour of the bedhead with the plain natural linen sheet and pillowcases and added striped linen in white and graphite to lighten the palette. A small velvet cushion in a darker colour adds softness and another texture without overpowering the pillows.
