Welcome to Alpine News. Winter is here and the cold weather is rolling in as we go to press. This issue contains a roundup of what’s happening and what’s new at resorts for skiers and snowboarders planning trips to their favorite ski areas. The lift companies and resort managements have been busy over the summer months making big, and not so big but welcome, improvements for your snow experience. In NSW, Perisher’s big news is the installation of the new Freedom Quad chair lift at Guthega. It will add an estimated 46% additional skiable area at Guthega and open up some of the best ski terrain in the state. Up at Charlotte Pass, Kosi Kids Club is offering an expanded program designed to get kid comfortable with the snow, while children four and under now ski free. Over at Thredbo the resort has lifted the lift ticket age limit for children from 14 to 17 and installed a new dedicated snow play area plus more snowmaking at the base village. Selwyn have installed more snowmaking on the Snowflake Tube Park; the resort has also introduced private lessons as part of the See Me Ski program for children aged two to four. In Victoria, Mt Baw Baw regulars will be evaluating the new resort management this season by Belgravia Leisure who also run Lake Mountain. At Mt Buller, eight new automated snowmaking guns have been added on the northern side of the resort plus a mid loading station on the Tyrol T bar. Hotham and Dinner Plain are working closer together this year with a family friendly joint day ticket designed to allow parents to share child minding with one parent skiing in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Dinner Plain has two new snow guns and introduced one of the cheapest day tickets available while Hotham continues its popular ‘five day any day’ ticket. At Falls Creek the ‘love in’ continues with the resort lift company and RMB deciding to work together to improve the resort experience. New lime green uniforms sporting a combined resort logo have been introduced so patrons can easily identify staff and ask for assistance and advice. Also in this issue you will find our regular Resort Guide with prices and resort services, the annual calendar plus terrain park, property guide, equipment, interschools and overseas skiing sections. Sochi Olympics chef de mission Ian Chesterman gives his post mortem on the games and Australia’s results. The Australian team did a stellar job in Sochi and we also have a chat with Aerials Silver Medal winner, David Morris, who shares his journey to getting to the games and winning his medal. Belgravia Leisure to manage Mt Baw Baw

THE MOUNT Baw Baw Alpine Resort Management Board (BBARMB) announced in late April the appointment of Belgravia Leisure to manage the resort. Belgravia have an extensive resume in leisure management and their track record includes managing over 80 facilities including Lake Mountain. BBARMB chair, Vicky Papachristos, said that the appointment will allow the resort board to gain an understanding of the resort’s commercial operations. “We are looking to them to bring new ideas and expertise to help us achieve our vision for Mount Baw Baw to become a more vibrant centre for year round alpine experiences,” Ms Papachristos said. “For some years the resort has required additional funding from the government to remain operational. “This funding will continue, but we will be drawing on Belgravia’s expertise to reduce this burden on the

to manage the resort and produce efficiencies and we will work with them to develop a plan to secure

investment in the resort to ensure the long term independent financial sustainability of the resort.”

PERISHER’S commitment to constantly improve and literally lift the bar continues in 2014 with the new $4m “Freedom” quad chairlift in Guthega. The Freedom quad chairlift will unlock some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Australia, with awe inspiring views over Mt Kosciuszko and the Main Range. CEO of Perisher, Peter Brulisauer, said that it was very exciting to be opening the chair this winter. “Guthega is my favorite of Perisher’s four resort areas, with terrific wide open groomed runs like Karl’s, Schnaxl

Top Olympians take out top awards THE Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) awards night were a glittering affair and Sochi silver medallists Torah Bright and David Morris were jointly named Suzuki Snowsports Athlete of the Year. Others in the running for the top award included Sochi bronze medallist, Lydia Lassila, world cup half-pipe crystal globe winner Scotty James and winner of the Lake Louise snowboard cross world cup event, Jarryd Hughes. Moguls skier Britt Cox was also in the running for the senior award after finishing fifth at the Sochi games and was named Junior Athlete of the Year for a fourth successive time. Britt Cox shared the Junior Athlete of the Year award with her Olympic teammate, snowboarder Scotty James who brought home the halfpipe world cup Globe. In a nod to the rising talent in winter sports, all four finalists for the Junior Snowsport Athlete of the Year, (Cox, James, Hughes and alpine skier Greta Small) competed in Sochi, with Cox and James already dual Olympians, having competed in Vancouver in 2010 at the age of 15. Aerialist Lydia Lassila, who created history at Sochi by becoming the first woman to

attempt a quadruple twisting triple somersault in competition, was recognised with the Outstanding Achievement Award. Aerialist David Morris was present on the night to collect his award and was extremely happy to be welcomed into such a prestigious alumni. “It is a privilege to receive the award that has been won by so many well performed athletes in the past,” Morris said. “Torah is a legend of winter

sports, so to have my name next to hers on the honor board is fantastic. “It’s great to receive the recognition for doing my job and I managed to pull it off on the day, win the medal, and now this is another of the rewards. “There are so many people who contributed to my success and this award is also recognition for all the work and the contribution they have made over many years,” Mr Morris said.

Other winners on the night included: Coach of the Year - Cord Spero (David Morris coach) Rising Star - Emily Arthur (snowboard) Development Coach - Jarrod Wouters (snowboard) Snowsports School of the Year - The Scots College Outstanding Achievement of the Year for Small Schools - Manly Village Public School

Chesterman appointed to lead winter team TASMANIA’S Ian Chesterman has been appointed chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, the sixth time he has led an Australian Olympic team. After the success of Australia’s winter athletes at this year’s Sochi games in Russia the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) executive wasted no time in appointing Chesterman to the role again. “It’s an enormous honor to be appointed to lead the Australian team to PyeongChang in 2018,” Mr Chesterman said. “I look back to the first time I was chef de mission in 1998 and I see the enormous progress made by our Australian winter sport athletes over that time and how we now go to an Olympic Winter Games as a highly

respected winter sport nation. “I’m very confident that we will take our strongest team ever to Korea in 2018,” Mr Chesterman said. Chesterman’s achievement in leading an Australian Olympic team on six occasions will match that of the AOC president, John Coates, who has led six Australian teams as chef, at the Summer Games from 1988- 2008. “Ian is a strong and passionate leader who also has a great rapport with his athletes and he thoroughly deserves to lead the team in 2018,” Mr Coates said. The veteran chef de mission’s Olympic honor role reads as follows: 1998 Nagano, Japan; 2002 Salt Lake City, USA; 2006 Torino, Italy; 2010 Vancouver, Canada; 2014 Sochi, Russia; 2018 PyeongChang, South Korea.

New logo for Falls Creek FALLS Creek Ski Lifts and Falls Creek Resort Management announced that both would be recognised under the banner of one unifying logo across the resort in February. The new logo will be phased in over several years in line with a number of other exciting new initiatives, developments and collaborations in the resort. Falls Creek Resort Management CEO David Herman said that the introduction of the new logo was a significant step forward for Falls Creek.

“Falls Creek has always been greater than the sum of its many great parts,” Mr Herman said. “However, for some years the mountain has been operating under different logos and we believe it’s time for Falls Creek to promote a unified vision with a logo that appropriately reflects the combined efforts of stakeholders

across the resort, who work closely together to deliver a great product for all of our guests.” The two rising peaks of the resting “F” in the new logo capture Falls Creek’s place in the high Victorian Alps and convey the sense of progression that sets Falls Creek apart. “The new logo unifies our mountain like never before and provides a clear message to visitors that Falls Creek operators are working together to provide the most memorable alpine tourism experience,” Mr Herman said.

Looking back at Sochi 2014

BY IAN CHESTERMAN

chef de mission Australian Winter Olympic team

RUSSIA staged an absolutely remarkable Olympic Games and while they invested a great deal in Sochi, they definitely delivered in every area. The venues were exceptional, the transport system worked perfectly, the villages in the mountain and coastal clusters were first class. From a team point of view, the conduct shown by both our athletes and officials was exemplary and every Australian should be proud of them. Sixty athletes from over ten different sports operated as one and from where I lived, with the athletes in the mountain village, I witnessed a committed, supportive and harmonious team. We won three medals, Torah Bright’s silver in women’s snowboard halfpipe, Lydia Lassila’s bronze in women’s aerials, and David Morris’ silver in men’s aerials. Three medals equals our best ever performance at a winter games, which was the three we won in Vancouver in 2010, the color combination was different, two gold and a silver in Vancouver, compared to two silver and a bronze in Sochi. With that said, medals are hard to win and gold medals even harder. Torah was just a fraction away, a quarter of one

point, from another gold for example. Going into these games we were five gold from a total of nine medals and that is a strike rate that was the envy of nearly every other nation. After these games our record is five gold from 12 medals which is still almost fifty per cent gold and still, in my opinion, a very impressive strike rate. Did we fail? Most definitely not. Three medals and a host of top five, eight and 16 results is still a remarkable achievement for a developing winter sport country. Did we aim too high, no. In my opinion if you don’t strive, you won’t achieve.

SILVER LINING: Torah Bright won silver at the Sochi games and only just missed out on gold. PHOTOS: OWIA

Low targets are easy to get, but won’t create a culture of high performance and we had 43 first time Olympians out of a team of

60 athletes and over seventy per cent of the team were rookies. The critics will question if some of the first timers de-

served to be there. Besides providing a shining light to each of their own sports, athletes need the exposure to Olympic condi-

tions and then they come back in four years time, or in eight years time, and they are hardened professionals, able to handle the pressure and able to win. Lydia Lassila is a classic example. She was really a rookie in Salt Lake in 2002, she blew out her knee in Torino in 2006 and came out and won the gold in Vancouver and all up, that was a 10 year campaign to get to the top. We don’t shy away from that goal of a top 15 finish as we are a country that strives for success and we want to keep improving and the signs are looking really good for Pyeongchang in 2018.

Even if it is an El Nino, it’s not all bad news

BY PETE ‘THE FROG’ TAYLOR snow fell in a three to four week FIRST UP, lets take a look back at season 2013 and see what we can make of that. Thankfully season 2013 is well and truly behind us as it wasn’t that great. Things looked positive early with a good snowfall in mid May and that had resorts thinking of a possible early start. Unfortunately mild temps mixed with rain saw the snow completely disappear by the start of the season and this pattern continued into July. The first decent snow didn’t fall until August which was too late for most, and most of the season’s

period from the start of August, but was ruined again by plenty of rain from the end of August through until early September. The Spencers Creek (just near Charlotte Pass) depth reading peaked at 185.6cm on August 26, which is actually close to the average max depth for that particular area, but stats can be misleading as the season was far from average overall. With all of that said, how are things looking now? Current forecast models suggest we could be moving into an El Nino. This is not yet a certainty but what it would ‘usually’ mean is

ISFT/Interschools partnership report THE SUBARU Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships greatly value the objectives of the ski for tommy (ISFT) organisation. ISFT is a not for profit initiative validated by The Alfred Foundation and the Victorian Cancer Council’s SunSmart. ISFT is directed by friends of the late Thomas Lewis-Mathias who was a national level alpine skier who died from melanoma at the young age of 23 in 2009. A major objective for the partnership in 2014 is to raise the remaining $5000 of $100,000 for a Confocal Microscope for the VMS. ISFT are already starting to prepare for the 2014 Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships and are aiming to raise the remaining money for the Confocal Microscope for the VMS. This piece of equipment allows non invasive ‘optical biopsy’, which will potentially avoid surgical excision at the diagnostic stage.

ISFT are aiming to raise the funds by asking competitors to fundraise prior to the interschools event. This can be done by getting sponsors, such as family and friends for each of their events. VIC interschools will award certificates to each of the highest fundraisers from each division and the ISFT trophy will be awarded to the school that raises the most funds per student, so that all schools have a chance to win. For the opening and closing ceremony the event organisers plan to hand out red LED flashing balls to all the competitors and make both the opening and closing a flashing sea of red.

that we are looking at a season of warmer than average daytime temps with less precipitation. Now this is not all doom and gloom with the positives being that less precipitation means less chance of rain damaging the snow cover and clear, warmer days usually sees more cold clear nights which is good news for snowmaking. Looking back at previous years showing similar patterns and SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) readings, what we have seen this year is that we are probably not likely to see a huge maximum snow depth. There have been good El Nino years like 1991 and really bad

on the slopes

years like 1982, 1993 and 2006. Some of these seasons have had good early snowfalls, others have started late and some never really got off the ground. What we can deduce from this is that there is no real definitive answer as to what will happen in 2014. One or two good early falls can set up a season and a decent early run of snowmaking nights without rain following, is paramount for early ski and boarding days and this is probably the real positive for the early outlook; plenty of cold nights with low humidity. Mt Buller gets behind its local talent

AMBASSADOR: Snowboard cross athlete Lauren Staveley is working closely with Mt Buller. PHOTO: Buller Ski Lifts

MT BULLER is thrilled to expand their ambassador program in 2014 to support developing ski and snowboarding talent. Mt Buller will provide free access to the mountain for 12 exciting young skiers and snowboarders this season to compliment the hard work and commitment of everyone at Team Buller Riders (TBR) and Transition Snowboarding Camps (TSC). Buller Ski Lifts communications manager David McNamara said it was a pleasure to play a part in the development of these exciting young athletes and continue the legacy of the ambassador program. “Mt Buller is blessed with so much young talent and we are very excited to help them develop their promising careers. “We will be working with all of them through

the current season and will assist with building their media profiles and sourcing PR opportunities for these athletes,” Mr McNamara said. Mt Buller will also work closely with their Olympic athletes and other professionals who call the mountain home. “We have once again reached out to athletes at the next level and we are thrilled to be working with senior ambassadors, Lauren Staveley (Snowboard Cross), Emily Bamford (Ski Racer), Mitchell Gourley (Paralympian Skier), Michael Rishworth (Ski Racer), Katya Crema (Ski Cross) and Robbie Walker (Slopestyle) in 2014. “There really is such a rich vein of skiing and snowboarding talent that calls Mt Buller home and it is our responsibility to ensure they get the support they need to achieve their individual goals.”

Canadian resort offers pre-season training SILVER STAR Mountain Resort is set to be the first Canadian ski resort to offer pre season training for Australian competitions and former Interschools event manager Steve Nelson has been recruited to run the program from 2015. The four week pre season training program will be specifically designed to meet the needs of promising skiers and snow boarders competing in Interschool snowsports competitions throughout Australia.

Competitive interschools athletes will have access to highly skilled coaches and reliable snow conditions in the coming northern winter. Participants will train on custom built courses and facilities designed to replicate those in Australia and it will be an exclusive opportunity to further develop skills and fine tune techniques prior to the beginning of the racing season in the southern hemisphere. Program manager Steve

Nelson has a long history in the ski industry, conducting snow sport events and programs since 1998. Mr Nelson also event managed the Australian and Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships for 14 years with the Victorian Interschools peaking at 6700 entrants during his tenure and Mr Nelson was the program manager of the Interschools Canada Program from Australia since it was introduced in 2007.

“This is such a thrilling opportunity to join the Silver Star Team. “I look forward to reconnecting with many of the interschools families and other contacts in the ski industry,” Mr Nelson said. “The position is an exciting and challenging role that fits the skills and experience I have in the industry perfectly.” For more information on the program, visit http:// winter.skisilverstar.com/ fsac.

David Morris: silver lining at Sochi

By VANESSA BACON-HALL AAN: Congratulations, what an achievement, how does it feel to be an Olympic silver medallist? DM: It’s a relief! We all dream that our training, blood, sweat and tears pays off and mine has after 12 years of fighting hard for it. AAN: Can you let the Australian Alpine News readers know a little about you and how you ended up becoming an aerials skier? DM: I’ve skied since I was three and been a gymnast since the age of four. I was never fantastic at gymnastics but I had the body awareness needed for bigger skills. Kirstie Marshall walked into my gym one day and saw me tumbling and flipping around when I was about 19 years old and asked me if I’d like to try aerial skiing, as there were no boys in the sport in Australia. Kirstie offered to train me for free in her spare

time and she introduced me to the right people and backed me since day one. AAN: Coming in to Sochi did you feel confident and ready for competition and did you feel that you had a good lead in to the games? DM: I was definitely ready and well prepared to compete in Sochi and had no doubts in my mind that I would perform better than my Vancouver 2010 campaign, where I finished thirteenth. I was ready to take on the day and I was confident in my ability to perform under pressure, as I seem to be able to do on a weekly basis. AAN: Take us through that night? Day 10 of competition? It was a long night for us watching back here in Australia, but what was it like for you? DM: It was a very long night for me too, but luckily I was well prepared on every level; physically, mentally and I had put in the countless hours of training

Mt Baw Baw’s park team consists of two fulltime park builders who are all highly experienced in design, construction and maintenance of all things park. How much park there is to ride, ultimately comes down to the weather and snow conditions. If it looks like snow’s on the way, they will plan to build bigger and as the snow accumulates so does the park count. When a sufficient depth is reached a total of three parks will be built. Whether you’re going to attempt a boardslide for the first time or throw spins off the biggest hit, riding one plank or two, Mt Baw Baw has a park for you. There’s jibs, slides, jumps, walls and lines for everyone.

Hotham has four terrain/rail parks across the resort: the basin rail park, the big D beginner park, the SBX/SX course and the summit terrain park.

AERIALIST: David Morris took out the silver medal in the Men’s aerials final at the Sochi Winter Olympics earlier this year. Still riding the wave of adulation from winning an Olympic silver medal in Sochi, David Morris took some time out to speak with the Australian Alpine News about what it takes to podium at an Olympics

to be there that night. I landed my first jump (full-doublefull-full, three flips and four twists) and finished equal first in the initial qualification round

2014 will see further investment in rails and boxes and other terrain park features across the resort catering for all abilities of skiers and snowboarders. The continued commitment to the 5 terrain parks, 2 ridercross courses and 2 halfpipes spread across the resort areas of Perisher and Blue Cow ensures Perisher retains its reputation of providing the best parks in Australia.

Thredbo has a new home for the intermediate terrain park and it is set to be a big one. Located on the lower half of Australia’s longest run, ‘The Supertrail’, it will track from middle slopes along the milk run and finish close to the base of Thredbo. The new look terrain park will give skiers and boarders a longer and more diverse park, providing plenty of room for the park crew to create fun long lines of jib features and sequences of jumps ranging from 15 to 20ft. This park is the perfect playground for intermediate riders looking to transition from the cruiser park.

which put me straight through to the finals. Anyone who wasn’t in the initial top six then had to jump again in another qualification round, how-

ever, I went inside and lay down, not paying any attention to the rest of the competition, I just smiled and closed my eyes because I’d already achieved a result higher than in Vancouver. I was an Olympic finalist and anything from here on was a bonus. AAN: Did you expect such a great result? DM: I don’t think we can ever expect a result given the nature of the sport, but I do believe I deserved it as I’ve worked hard and put in the time and effort. I jumped on days when the weather wasn’t great and others stayed inside, I jumped when I was sore and really struggled to be out there and that’s how I earned the silver, over years of doing this and slowly making little gains over everyone. People ask me what it’s like not to get the gold medal, like I lost it and came second instead, but when the competition started that day, everyone was in last place and no one is

guaranteed a medal, even if you think they will get it. We’re all in last and have to earn a place in the next round, each time beating people. I earned silver that day and I was beaten by my friend, Anton Kushnir, who most certainly earned the gold. AAN: Finally, will you be aiming to head over to South Korea for the next Winter Olympics? DM: I will take this year off, rest my body and my brain until I am in the right headspace to dedicate myself to another gruelling few years. We have a strong team now and I look forward to watching their progress this year and hope they get the results they deserve and have worked for. I want to return and I want to get a gold medal, so I will rest and recover and do whatever it takes in order to be able to return and complete that goal. The sporting world has definitely not seen the last of me.

The freestyle terrain park is for anyone after an extreme experience. The biggest of Charlotte’s parks, it features jumps, tabletops and rails. Charlotte’s play park is the place for children who want to improve and have fun while they master their new skills.

Mt Buller park (MBP) has something for everyone, whether you like to ride the rails, race on the rider cross course or pull some air off one of the huge summit jumps, the MBP is the place to be for freestyle fun. Developed to suit all levels, the MBP allows riders to build confidence, practice and improve existing skills in one of the five parks across the resort.

2013/2014 Australian XC Ski Team International Season BY FINN MARSLAND AUSXC Head Coach

SOCHI AUSTRALIA sent our largest ever Winter Olympic cross-country skiing contingent (XC) to the Sochi games. The XC and biathlon teams were housed separately to the rest of the snow sports in the Laura Endurance Village, accessible only by gondola, with the racetracks right out the front door. Despite some reports to the contrary, there was plenty of snow up at Laura, though warm temperatures during the day saw soft, spring racing conditions for a number of events. Our XC skiers put in solid mid-field performances and came away proud of their efforts. It was inspirational to see aerialist David Morris pull off a silver medal in Sochi. Aerials is a small sport internationally but to make it onto the podium at the Olympics is an amazing achievement and a testament to the dedication, perseverance and many hours of hard work that one needs to put in. Aspiring winter sports athletes should take the time to read David’s bio on his website: www. aerialskier.com.

results at the Swedish World Junior Trials and Australia’s best female result at the World University Games. Casey is part of a great group of young female athletes coming through right now and who will make the step up to the World Cup stage before too long. WORLD CUP Phillip Bellingham was the outstanding AUSXC skier on World Cup for the second year in a row, edging closer and closer to the elusive top 30 and World Cup points. He and World Cup coach, August Teague flew solo on a number of events this season while other athletes were ill or chasing points for Olympic selection. At one particular World Cup in Toblach, Phil was just 1.27 seconds outside of the finals. Phil’s sixteenth place in the freestyle sprint time trial at the World U23 Championships was impressive and unfortunately the eventual silver medal winner tripped him up in his quarter final. With such an impressive style, it’s safe to say that there are more sprint finals to come in Phil’s future. Esther Bottomley raced only two World Cups this season but, has now racked up 41 individual starts since her World Cup debut 10 years ago. The photo associated that we have of her on the Swissloppet circuit, was her first race back after illness about two weeks out from Sochi. After the Olympics Esther found good form again in Switzerland with a podium third place in the Swiss Cup in Silvaplana and twelfth place in the Engadin Ski Marathon. Many thanks to the supporters of AUSXC, in particular Falls Creek which is the National Team Training Centre, Ski & Snowboard Australia and everyone who supported the XC Towards 2014 fundraising campaign. Look out for XC Towards 2018 activities coming up soon and follow Australian cross-country ski racing at www.ausxc.com and AUSXC on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

JUNIORS The Junior/U23 Team was based in Ostersund in Sweden this year, led by the husband and wife combination of Nick and Lescinska Grimmer. There were a few anomalies with the national team selection and any athlete who qualified for the junior, U23 or University World Championships were invited to train with the team. Unfortunately, it was an unusually bad snow season in Sweden early on, so the team skied plenty of sessions on a small loop of artificial snow. Junior athlete Casey Wright had a stellar season and was recently named the 2014 Australian Junior Cross Country Skier of the Year. Racing highlights included finishing just in the top fifty at the World Junior Championship, three top 16

Top tips for investing in BY DAN FLYNN

Alpine Property

Partner TressCox Lawyers

ADDING an alpine property to your investment portfolio is an attractive concept. With high rental returns and guaranteed accommodation for you, your family and friends. To help you make the most informed decision, here are our top tips when purchasing alpine property.

of 1Method Ownership

There are various types of property available in the alpine resorts, the most common being private apartments, managed apartments and club memberships. A common form of ownership is through a company with a shareholding arrangement where ownership of shares is linked with a sub-lease of an apartment. As a shareholder you are a member of the lessee company with rights of involvement in the management and caretaking of the buildings and improvements. The share and sublease is your ‘title’ to ownership and in many cases, you may register that interest at the relevant Office of Titles. You should be clear as to the method of ownership and seek appropriate legal advice where there are any concerns.

Most properties in an alpine resort are sold on a ‘walk in/walk out’ basis with all the mod-cons provided. Having furniture delivered to the property can be difficult during the snow season. Be careful to ensure that a detailed inventory is included in the contract and check the condition of items at the time of signing the contract. These items should be in the same workable condition on settlement, fair wear and tear excepted.

5Finance

FUTURE INVESTMENT: Seeking the right legal advice when buying alpine property is an absolute must. PHOTO: istock, Benedek

of 2Length Lease

The vast majority of interests in Alpine land come in the form of long term crown leases. The Crown retains ownership of the land, but leases it out for long periods, usually 50 years or more. When you purchase an interest in Alpine land under a crown lease, you are purchasing a sublease interest for the remainder of that crown lease. While the crown lease is likely to be renewed and the building will remain, there

may be a requirement to upgrade the building before a lease is renewed. Be sure to confirm the end date of the crown lease and factor the age and condition of the building into your calculations.

3Permitted Use

Do you want to use the property for personal use, rental returns or a combination of both? Some properties have compulsory management and letting agreements,

some allow combinations and some are simply own your own. We suggest you look for a combination with the right to reserve the premises for your own purposes if you so decide. Alpine apartments can provide great rental returns during and outside of the snow season. If a compulsory management agreement is required, check for overall management fees, and whether these are inclusive of third party agents and suppliers. Use of a property as

a commercial enterprise such as a cafe will likely be restricted by the terms of the lease. Look for commercial arrangements and tenure to suit your business proposal or project. There are restrictions that may need to be negotiated to conduct business operations within the resorts and ski field areas.

of 4Fitout apartment

Is the property fitted out and sold with all the modern conveniences?

Before buying any property you must always be sure of your finance. The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend. Registration of alpine leases has made accessibility to finance more readily available. There are numerous methods of structuring finance and this needs to be examined depending on your use of the premises and your financial circumstances. The alpine resorts present wonderful lifestyle and business opportunities with the resorts contributing over $1.5 billion to the Australian economy annually. TressCox Lawyers are able to help and advise with any of your proposed alpine interests and transactions.

Did you know? Alpine Apartments are NOT part of a body corporate BY TESS HAUSER

Solicitor TressCox Lawyers

WE OFTEN hear people on the mountain referring to their apartment building as a ‘Body Corporate’ or ‘Owners Corporation’. These terms mean

PROPERTY: Body corporates are not so common in the Alpine property market. PHOTO: istock, Brett Charlton

the same thing, however, Alpine apartment buildings (mostly) are not ‘owners corporations’ under the law. In essence this means that Alpine apartment managers are not required to adhere to the obligations provided by each state’s owners corporation legislation and it may also mean that owners of individual apartments are not required to comply with legislative controls. In practice, Alpine apartments behave like owners corporations. Similar obligations that are

imposed on owners corporations by statute are imposed on Alpine companies (often created for the sole purpose of holding the Head Lease and managing the apartment building) by the Company Constitution or Apartment Rules. With this said, if you ever have a Body Corporate issue, don’t be fooled into heading for your state’s strata or owners corporation legislations. We can advise or assist with enquiries or disputes concerning Alpine apartments.

Iconic Arlberg stage four is now released BY MARK ADAMS STAGE four at the Arlberg Hotel Mt Buller has just been released and for the first time investors and skiers can own a piece of the iconic Arlberg from only $145,000. This will buy you a modern and spacious hotel room which is fully furnished with a renovated ensuite and sleeps four in comfort. Room 109 is just one of the rooms on offer and has mountain views, a queen bed with a bunk, desk, buffet, bench, wardrobe, fridge and TV. The Arlberg is located on some of the most prime real estate that Buller has to offer and being on Bourke St offers all the convenience for your family to enjoy and while not occupied you can make it available to be rented through the hotel management. Fixed outgoings are very low at around $2000 a year and with historic gross rentals of around $30,000 just during the winter, the net return after all expenses is over

five per cent and you can still use it even when vacant. Should you wish to use it more regularly during the busy season, then that’s no problem either as there are no restrictions on use, except that they are not for permanent occupation and could be offered for rent during the ski season on a regular basis. To top it off the hotel owners and operators for the last 26 years have over the previous three years spent over $5 million building and refurbishing the building, which now includes a new restaurant, roof top deck, sports bar, new Bourke Street Apartments, underground car parking and many more features that will be added in the future. Open all year and with an excellent management team, you can enjoy the lifestyle of the mountain whether it is bike riding over summer or skiing in winter. The hotel boasts everything needed for a fantastic family holiday such as a manned

reception, large ski hire and boutique. For a more casual area the sports bar is able to cater for a friendly game of pool or you can watch sports on the big tellys while enjoying snacks or a glass of wine. The famous Nookys restaurant now overlooks the Bourke Street Ski Run and is the perfect place for lunch or dinner. The Arlberg even has a new roof deck bar for those Blue Bird Days, with views that go on forever and it is also the perfect spot to just sit and watch the people come and go on the Bourke Street lift and ski down the run. Having all these great facilities means the Arlberg Hotel accommodation will always be in demand and your lifestyle investment will always be secure. Ski calendar favorite returns to Falls Creek RENOWNED international cross country ski race the Kangaroo Hoppet, returns to Falls Creek on Saturday, August 23. The Hoppet is Australia’s premier long distance cross country ski race, and a member of the prestigious Worldloppet series of 16 international cross country ski events. Worldloppet is a union of the most famous cross country ski races in the world attracting over 135,000 skiers annually. Worldloppet races are held each year

in Austria, Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Norway, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia and Australia. Whether you take two hours or six hours, the Kangaroo Hoppet provides a unique opportunity to ski the Bogong High Plains of Victoria’s Alpine National Park on a well groomed trail with six food stations. For those who do not feel up to the challenge of the 42km event, there are the shorter 21km Aus-

tralian Birkebeiner and 7km Joey Hoppet events starting shortly after the main event. More than 1000 skiers from all around the world will be arriving at Falls Creek in the last weeks of August to take part in this year’s event. Among them will be more than 150 international skiers, most of them being ordinary skiers who have travelled to Australia with the aim of completing another event to count towards the 10 events required to gain the coveted World-

loppet Master award. This is not to overlook the elite competitors lining up at the start of the field where Australia’s best skiers get to test themselves against high quality completion from Europe, North America and Asia. While all eyes will be on the elite skiers leading the pack in the main event competing for the podium places, a highlight of the event for junior and under-23 skiers are six AGL Energy in Action scholarships valued at $500.

These are awarded to the first U18 and U14 in the 7km Joey Hoppet, first U23 in the 21km, with a further two $500 awards to the first Australians in the 42km main event. This is the seventh year of involvement with the event for major sponsor AGL Energy, owner and operator of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme and Australia’s largest retailer of renewable energy. Selwyn: the place to learn park

PLACE TO LEARN: Selwyn has a range of dedicated park lessons and tickets designed for those wanting to learn ‘park’. PHOTO: Selwyn Snowfields

A NEW addition to Selwyn is the See Me Ski Program. This is a special private lesson with one of SelwynĂ•s professional instructors for children between the age of two and four. Using the ‘hook-ease’, which is a system that allows the instructor to control the child’s skis with their poles, the instructor can provide guidance on how to stop and turn on the slopes. Also in 2014 is the park program for little terrors on snowboards. They will have the chance to try out this dedicated terrain park lesson, which involves learning how to jib the many features in Selwyn’s mini terrain park under the care of professional instructors. The park program is available for $110 for one day and includes a lift

ticket, board hire and three hour lesson. With the success of the mini terrain park over the past years, Selwyn are aiming to expand the park and are providing many more small sized features to ride on. This park is designed for novice park riders and is a fun and exciting place for all ages to start small and learn how to ride the park. Other additions to Selwyn include an entirely new online booking system, it’s a very easy process that allows guests to book accommodation with their Selwyn booking. There are also some new additions to the snowmaking system each year, and this year improvements to the favorite Snowflake Tube Park have been made and it now requires less snow to open.

Mt Baw Baw - the preferred destination MANY visitors find the unique appeal of Mount Baw Baw to be the closeknit village atmosphere that is akin to a European style resort where everything is nearby. The general store, pub, restaurants and cafes are all within a snowball’s throw of each other and your accommodation. As the closest downhill ski resort to the majority of Victorians, Baw Baw stands out as the preferred destination for those just starting out on their snow sport odyssey, or for those returning to the snowfields after a few years off the snow. Perfect for skiers and snowboarders (and especially those wanting to learn), Baw Baw also offers two toboggan parks and of course a beautiful snow covered playground that’s just under three hours from Melbourne. Backing up the range

of on mountain offerings is the fact that Mount Baw Baw boasts the cheapest lift ticket prices in Australia; with mid week day passes at $50 and ski and snowboard lessons starting from $60. A day trip to the snow has also never been easier, with visitors to Mount Baw Baw able to pre-purchase resort entry online via a secure, quick and easy payment system. Numberplate recognition at the gate means an instant pass through and that equates to less time in the car and more time out enjoying the snow. Head to the website www. alpineeasyaccess.com.au to find out more. Baw Baw’s instructors and facilities have been developed to cater to every level of skier confidence and the mountain terrain itself is perhaps the biggest drawcard.

SNOWSHOE: Mt Baw Baw has a range of snow based activities that are all within an easy three hour drive from Melbourne. PHOTO: Mt Baw Baw

The mountain’s gentle slopes means that beginners are learning in a safe and friendly environment, and those who have had a few years off the snow can refresh their skills with confidence.

Major developments at Perisher resort

OVER the past eight years Perisher has invested over $30 million in major resort improvements and these investments have greatly enhanced the grooming fleet, summer slope grooming and snowmaking, ensuring that Perisher has the best snow conditions in Australia. Add to this a brand new chair, the ‘Freedom Chair’, and Perisher is the mountain with the biggest developments being rolled out for the 2014 winter. In recent years Perisher has invested over $22 million in snowmaking upgrades across the resort and this investment continues in 2014 with another five new Techno Alpin TF10 fan guns being added. Perisher’s snowmaking team ‘The Ghosts of Perisher’ are out in the sub zero temperatures in the middle of the night working hard to ensure the best possible conditions each morning for all skiers and snowboarders and their nightly exploits can be checked out at: http://youtu.be/ fglXpmZ03yg. The continued investment in snowmak-

ing further cements Perisher’s reputation as having Australia’s best and most reliable snow cover on some of Australia’s favorite trails such as Towers on Mt Perisher, Zali’s, Roller Coaster and Excelerator in Blue Cow and the Slopestyle course on Front Valley. New slope grooming works in 2014 include The Road Run in Blue Cow which has been widened, making the access to the base of the Terminal Chairlift easier and ensuring there is more room for all guests. Planning a snow holiday comes with a lot of questions including where to stay and whether it is on snow or off. Perisher’s new online accommodation finder is the best way to get a great deal on snow holiday accommodation. The accommodation finder gives options across a huge variety of accommodation and locations at a price that fits the budget. Choose from self-contained apartments, hotels and lodge style accommodation across Perisher, Jindabyne, Smiggins, Guthega and the Alpine Way.

Big savings and snow play at Thredbo this year A NEW dedicated snow play area has opened up at Thredbo this year and new snow guns in the area will ensure that there is always a fresh supply of the white stuff when snowmaking is possible. The new snow play park, located in the base station area of the village is where visitors can now slide on a toboggan, ride a snow tube, build a snowman, make a snow angel and just generally play in the snow. Thredbo has also teamed up with the best of North America in a partnership that will offer unprecedented benefits for Thredbo season pass holders. Thredbo has become the exclusive Australian resort partner of “The Mountain Collective (TMC) which will result in Thredbo season pass holders

Super deals at Hotham Alpine Resort HOTHAM Alpine Resort is Victoria’s highest alpine village and to make it easy to sort out your winter ski escape, Hotham has a range of hot new deals and packages available in 2014. The favorite Snow Pass is once again available this year allowing visitors to get on the snow in no time with the Hotham and Falls Creek Snow Pass which is a convenient fully automated RFID access card for all ticketing, lesson and hire purchases. Scanning gates at key resort lifts also mean less time in queues and more time in the snow and passes can be reloaded online and if snow passes are registered this way, pass holders will be eligible for discounts on lift tickets and much more. See www.snowpass.com.au.

New at Buller in 2014 MT BULLER has completed the automation of their snowmaking infrastructure on the northern side of Bourke St, following the purchase of six new fully automatic SMI Puma snowmaking guns. These new snowmaking guns will produce eight times more snow than the previous guns they replaced, with the five original snowmaking guns relocated to the Baldy and Kofler’s areas which will significantly improve the reliability of snow conditions on these parts of the mountain. Mt Buller has also installed a new mid

load on the Tirol T-Bar and this upgrade will help improve skier and boarder access from the north side precinct, down to the village. Other big news at Buller is the refurbishment of the village day centre. The former Cow Camp plaza day facility in the village square has undergone a complete renovation and refurbishment. A mezzanine level has been added which will double the seating and dining capacity in this area and visitors to the resort will be able to enjoy a fresh new look and feel, with plenty more space to relax, wait for friends or enjoy a ski break.

PERFECT: More snowmaking at Buller means more snow and that means more guaranteed snow time. PHOTO: Andrew Railton

Charming Charlotte Pass 2014 sees yet another expansion of the Kosi Kids Club which is an all day kids ski program. Charlotte Pass will now be offering a morning half day and afternoon half day option along with the all day option. The Kosi Kids Club is designed to get young kids comfortable on the snow. Expanded private lesson offerings are also a new feature this year with the introduction of a one and a half hour private lesson in place of the one hour private lesson. The ski school can tailor a lesson to focus on the particular needs and wants of those participating, such as focusing on technique for racing or tackling the terrain parks.

Making it easy for the whole family to come to Charlotte Pass, children four and under ski for free and the resort is asking families to bring proof of age in order to receive an all mountain lift pass for free. There’s nothing like a bit of fun to make the snow even more enjoyable and this year Charlotte Pass is introducing, ‘Onesie Wednesday’. Guests are invited to join in the fun with the lifties this season and dress in their favorite onesie, so don’t be surprised if you see elephants, giraffes and tigers skiing and boarding on Wednesdays. Whilst the big kids have fun each Wednesday, the little kids can enjoy a free snow cone ev-

ery Monday afternoon. Nothing is more refreshing than the taste of flavoring on crushed ice and the snow cones at Charlotte Pass are definitely the sweetest. And for the snow bunnies, if natural snowfalls allow, 2014 will also see more ‘enhanced natural terrain’ grooming. Because of the wide-open pistes on the mountain the resort will use its innovative grooming approach to enhance existing natural features such as ‘roll overs’ and ‘natural drops’. This means that if you want to explore the mountain and still enjoy a little air under your feet, be on the lookout for the new ‘enhanced natural terrain’ features during the 2014 season.

WITH 11 resorts that are less than an hour from Salt Lake City (SLC) International Airport, visitors to Utah that want snow, spend more time on the slopes (and apres ski) and less time in the car and that can only be a good thing. Boasting 14 ski resorts in total, Utah offers ski experiences to suit any beginner, intermediate and professional. There are amenities and services that cater to lodge bunnies, foodies and children alike. These include tubing, snowmobiling, luxurious spa treatments, award winning restaurants and some of the world’s best ski and snowboard instructors. Let’s take a look at some of the major resorts in the Utah region. Park City Utah’s resorts consistently deliver awesome snow and thanks to tourist friendly transport links, it’s easy to try different ski spots without breaking your budget or wasting valuable slope time.

If you want to stick close to the buzz of Utah’s Park City, I can’t say that I blame you and this is one of North America’s top ski towns. Park City boasts three world class resorts: Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, and The Canyons all of which offer excellent off slope entertainment and an array of shops and galleries. If you happen to be travelling to Park City with kids in tow then Park City Mountain Resort has so much to keep your brood amused. Once the lifts shut down, it’s time to make family memories on the alpine coaster, through the sky on the zip line, or enjoy an old-fashioned horse drawn sleigh ride. If you prefer to holiday at ski only resorts, then it’s time to try Deer Valley on for size. With a limited number of daily tickets sold, you’ll spend your precious time skiing, not queuing, plus, nothing beats the feeling of bottomless powder turns into an expertly-gladed Aspen forest, believe me, nothing, beats this. Park City’s Canyons Resort is home to over 4000 skiable acres and 182 runs. If it’s diverse terrain that you’re

after, then you have come to the right place and once you’ve tackled the perfectly groomed runs, amazing tree skiing and pristine bowls, it’s then time to unwind with world class amenities and that all important tailored spa experience. Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon Are you happy to forego the shopping and apres ski scene on your Utah ski adventure? Then point your skis towards the Cottonwood Canyons. The towering peaks of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon are visible from downtown Salt Lake City and are home to the spectacular resorts, Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton. They are located within 40 minutes of SLC Airport and 50 minutes of Park City, each ski resort features picturesque scenery, legendary terrain and cozy villages. If you’re eavesdropping on Utah chat, which frequently makes mention of ‘deep and steep’, chances are the talk is about none other than Alta Ski Resort. Continued page 34

‘Greatest Snow On Earth’

34 Australian Alpine News 2014

From page 32 The no frills, skier’s only destination features challenging off piste terrain, spectacular views, and plenty of snow. If your party is a mixed bag of ski skills, you’ll be pleased to learn that there’s loads of terrain for beginners and intermediates too. Snowbird Resort offers intense intermediate and advanced runs that put you through your paces and leave you begging for more. Just like starring in your very own Warren Miller film, this beautiful location with loads of snow will ruin you for other ski destinations. Solitude Resort features diverse terrain and deep powder, all in a family friendly environment. Say goodbye to lift lines and quickly find your ski bliss. Off the slopes there’s a fun park, games room and a charming European style village. Brighton Resort is a lowkey ski destination that’s big on personality and with everything from beginner to expert runs, it’s the perfect spot for adventures with both friends or as a family. For the more advanced skiers, there’s the cliffs, trees, terrain parks,

and awesome backcountry to tackle and thanks to illuminated runs you can even hit the slopes at night. In And Around Ogden Just 35 minutes north of Salt Lake City sits Ogden, a quirky town with plenty in the way of shopping, eats, and live music. Plus, there’s the breath-taking views of Wasatch Mountain Range. Ogden is a mere 20 minutes drive from two unique Utah ski resorts, Snowbasin and Powder Mountain and each features diverse terrain, un-crowded slopes and inspired skiing. Snowbasin Resort is home to 3000 acres and 3000 vertical feet and even on a ‘busy day’ you will share the slopes with a mere 3000 skiers and that means un-crowded access to superb terrain, meticulously manicured groomers, and plenty of steeps and deeps. Utah’s Powder Mountain has next to no crowds also and with 7000 skiable acres, it’s hardly surprising. The no frills resort offers hassle free slope time in the shape of endless powder, untouched corduroy, cost effective cat skiing and zero lift lines.

DOLOMITES

r ‘Mecca Tips’ With all this in mind, here are ou ur Utah Ski holiday. and how to get the most out of yo

On a powder day head to Solitude Resort or Powder Mountain. Solitude for the sheer volume of snow and amazing terrain and Powder Mountain for the unbeatable off piste skiing. Are you a fan of big mountain skiing? Tackle the steep and deep that both Snowbird and Alta resorts have to offer. On bluebird days, choose Canyons Resort or Snowbasin and if you’re not afraid of a little leg burn, tackle the 400 metre long natural half pipe, Canis Lupus.

For terrain park junkies, try the superpipe over at Park City Mountain Resort. Scott’s bowl and the McConkey’s also offer good steep pitch and tight lines. Migrate over to Deer Valley Resort in the days immediately after a storm, as it’s these days where you’ll find plenty of powder off the beaten track. Looking to relax when Sunday happens to come around? A visit to Sundance Resort allows you to ski the morning and then tackle brunch at the Foundry Grill.

Vic Interschools steadily growing

THE 2014 Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships will be held at Mt Buller for the 57th consecutive year this coming August. Last year’s championships involved 160 schools and received 5800 event entries across the cross country, alpine skiing, moguls and snowboard events. The cross country events will be held on Sunday August 10 and all ski and snowboard events will be held at the end of the month from August 25 to 31. For the second year running the multiclass event will be hosted on Wednesday, August 27 for children with special needs and this inaugural event in 2013 attracted over 20 participants and is expected to grow even further this year. Event manager David Speirs said that the biggest snow sports event in the southern hemisphere is looking forward to some big changes this year. “We are very much looking forward to another bigger and better Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships in 2014. “We have been busy over summer improving areas around our cross country event planning with a dedicated technical delegate, as well as implementing new

volunteer management systems into our online entry system,” Mr Speirs said. “Our Mogul events will see a top ten final that will deliver an exciting show similar to our Ski and Snowboard Cross finals format and we believe that the event is the best of its type in the world and we are committed to continually improving every aspect through surveys and stakeholder feedback.”

VCE student takes out interschools art competition GENAZZANO FCJ College student Alessia Riccio has won a competition giving students the opportunity to design artwork for the 2014 Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships. Thanks to her creative hand, Ms Riccio will not only see her artwork adorn all Subaru Victorian interschools collateral and merchandise, she is also the happy recipient of a 2014 Mt Buller season membership. Mt Buller has hosted the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships since 1958 and will once again host the event this August. Ms Riccio, who is currently studying VCE Art, has been skiing since 2005 and will be competing in her sixth Victorian interschools this season.

TOP DESIGN: The winning art submission.

Fellow Genazzano student and interschools competitor, Moorina Bonini, assisted her. Victorian interschools event manager David Speirs said that Genazzano had been a part of the interschools event for close to 20 years. “It is great to see the

type of long term love of the snow and interschools that Alessia and Moorina both possess,” Mr Speirs said. 2014 marks the first year of the artwork competition and while a number of high quality entries were received, Alessia’s submission was a clear standout.

THE ACT was cheering loudly on February 14 when Laura Peel, ACT aerialist, made her Olympic debut in Sochi. Laura finished in 7th place after qualifying for the final and narrowly missing out on the super top 4 final. The Olympics were inspiring and we look forward to seeing the next crop of athletes aiming to compete in the next Olympics in South Korea. Ahead of the local season, SnowSports ACT ran a dry land training program for junior athletes and held the annual Ski and Snowboard Sale and Expo, where the community could buy or sell new and second hand equipment. All profits from the event went towards scholarships for up and coming athletes. SnowSports ACT will be holding many events this season. The ‘come and try’ cross country skiing day on July 5 at the Perisher trails is a free event for anyone wanting to learn the basic skills required for cross country skiing. Professional coaches will take you through a two hour lesson followed by a barbecue lunch. Participants will need to hire their own equipment. After the success of the inaugural event last year, the Ridercross Cup is back and will be held at Thredbo on July 27. The Ridercross Cup is a Skiercross

Australian Masters Championship to return to the slopes of Perisher Masters Skiing

BY DAVID TAYLOR & STEPHEN McKITTRICK Australian Masters Skiing Association

OUR BIG event every year is the Australian Masters Championship, which is again being held at Perisher, on August 28 and 29. The championship is open to all Masters Alpine skiers, aged 30 years and above. We schedule a Super G, a Giant Slalom and a Slalom race for the event, which is categorised into both Men’s and Ladies categories, with groups of five years receiving medals for first, second and third. There is also an overall award based on an age handicap, which can see some of the more senior Masters who put down some good times being ranked quite highly in the overall awards.

The annual general Meeting of the Australian Masters Skiing Association (AMSA) is always held at the same time as the championships, with the venue again this year being the Guthega Alpine Inn, who are an ongoing sponsor of AMSA. The AGM will be held immediately after the last race on the Friday. In the past 12 months, AMSA has been working with Ski and Snowboard Australia to integrate

Masters skiing into the SSA Athlete Pathway. It is recognised that after retirement from active FIS competition, many athletes would like to keep up their competition skills and Masters racing provides just this opportunity. One of the tasks within this integration process was to find out exactly how many people there were in Australia actively participating in a structured Masters skiing program at each of the five resorts in Australia.

The distinction was made between those programs designed for specific Masters race training and those that concentrated on recreational and skill improvement training. The results were quite a surprise and very encouraging. It was found that 51 persons participated in Masters race training and 118 persons participated in recreational training in 2013, across the five major ski resorts in Australia. As always, the aim of AMSA is to introduce as many people as possible into Masters race training and participation, as the experience of everyone who has been involved up to now is that it is a chance to dramatically up-skill one’s skiing. The association also provides a great social scene, while giving the chance to be as competitive as one likes.

Cross country at Mt Stirling

BY CRAIG JONES Stirling Experience

THE STIRLING ski school will have four Estonian ski racers to lead the junior squad and train interschools competitors on Mt Stirling this season. Cross country (XC) ski coach Varhur Teppan will be returning for another winter in Australia after successfully setting up his own training squad and ski school in Estonia during the northern winter. Also returning is Siim Eilo and we are also happy to welcome for the first time, Ave Ansper and Joosep Tammemae who are all national XC racers and graduates from Tartu University and the Otepaa Ski Academy. The Mt Stirling XC ski school is proud to employ a number of Estonian national and international XC ski racers, as these elite skiers have university degrees that specialise in outdoor education with an emphasis on XC ski instructing and race coaching. While the emphasis on Mt Stirling is more towards ski touring, we will be reinstating a junior race squad for the 2014 season to provide local youth and secondary colleges, hoping to field a strong team in the interschools snowsports competition. The race squad will give the racers the opportunity to take advantage of the latest technical knowledge, training schedules and special skills associated with the sport of XC ski racing. The squad will meet every Saturday afternoon for a skills based clinic and students are encouraged to bring along their own race skis as time will be set aside to

discuss race tuning, with the opportunity to prepare skis for racing. The program will commence from the first Saturday in July and will run every Saturday at a cost of $25 per student for each three hour session. XC race tuition can also be booked with the Mt Stirling XC ski school by ski clubs or school groups at other times for groups of six or more participants and all bookings made include complimentary snow shuttle transport between the Nordic Centre at TBJ and the snow line. For more information on snow conditions and XC lessons, please visit the Stirling Experience website, www.stirlingexperience. com.au.

A WORLD Cup in Toblach, Italy, with a fabulous Aussie cheer squad led into the flight to Sochi - it was Olympic Winter Games time. The Olympics were fabulous. There were three villages, cross country and biathlon were the only two sports in our hotel, which will become a five-star resort. Needless to say, huge rooms, massive bathrooms, chandeliers, indoor/outdoor pool, spa, saunas and 24-hour buffet, we certainly had a win here. Gorgeous sunny warm weather made it perfect for spectators. Gorgeous sunny warm weather also made for some interesting skiing conditions - or more to the point made you question the 2pm start times – European TV was the answer - for our events. Everyone kept saying, “This is great, you guys should be used to skiing in these conditions”. Well we do get a lot of beautiful warm sunny days in spring, however, everyone knows that you need to finish up skiing by 11am and then not go back out until it starts to freeze at 4pm so you don’t end up skiing in deep slopping glue. The ‘salted’ (firm) uphill and very much not salted (deep slop) downhill made for an interesting sprint, which I felt quite good in. My skis were not quick, and not because of the wax or ski choice, just because I didn’t have great skis for those conditions.

The 10k classic was my first of the season, but one that would be by far the toughest race course I have ever raced on. I was really pleased to get around and had a surprising amount of fun. Post Olympics I thought I would hang up the race skis for FIS races for the season, until my partner Valerio entered two Swiss Cup races and I figured I might as well race. I ended up 11th with 103 FIS points in the 5km Classic - happy with that - and the next day I raced a 10k skate mass start and was very surprised to come in third with new best European distance FIS points of 81. The following weekend was the Engadin Ski Marathon, where I placed fourth in the night sprint and 12th in the marathon. That was the season that was. See you on the snow.
