House design that is good for you and the environment By RUSSELL SULLY and ANN BRAIN

SUNDAY, September 20 is “Sustainable House Day” - an Australia wide event that gives you the opportunity to visit homes with environmentally friendly features. This year it will be online only, so register at www.sustainablehouseday.com. What is a sustainable house, and why is it important? A sustainable house is designed or adapted to be environmentally friendly, cheaper to run, and more comfortable to live in. In the past, most houses were designed for appearance and cost, and to face the street, not to suit the demands of the climate. Testing of older Victorian homes for their energy efficiency, revealed that homes built pre-1990 averaged 1.5 stars, and those built between 1990 and 2005 averaged 3 stars. In 2011, the Australian Government introduced the National Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) to assess the potential thermal comfort of all new homes on a scale of 1-10. The minimum standard is currently 6 stars. A review is under way which will hopefully raise this rating to a minimum of 7 stars. Benefits of designing a sustainable, energy efficient home; 1) Year-round thermal comfort; 2) Reduce risk of heat stress; 3) Reduced heating and cooling costs; 4) Reduced carbon footprint; 5) Increase resale value. Design features to make your home more energy efficient 1) Optimise passive solar heating; 2) Face the living zones to the north for sun entry in winter sun, but not in summer; 3) Overall footprint size - a bigger footprint costs more to build, uses more resources, and has

SUN SMART: Ensuring your home faces the right way is essential for keeping it cool in summer and reducing your energy costs.

higher running costs 4) Locate rooms in zones to minimise heating and cooling requirements 5) Double glazed windows help reduce heating and cooling cost; 6) Ventilation - locate doors and windows to improve airflow; 7) Insulation - ceiling, walls and floor help reduce running costs;

8) Roof - orientation and clear space for solar panels, adequate eaves; 9) Light coloured roof to reduce summer heat; 10) Draught proofing to reduce heat loss; 11) Thermal mass - polished concrete/tile floors and internal brick wall for a winter heat bank;

12) External shading via blinds or planting - allow sun access in winter, shade in summer; 13) LED lighting, energy efficient appliances. If you are planning to build, discuss each of these features with your builder. If you are looking to buy or rent an existing home, ask the agent about the energy ef-

ficiency features of the property, and if possible request a copy of recent energy bills. For more information go to www.sustainablehouseday.com or www.yourhome.gov.au or www. sustainability.vic.gov.au “Build For Energy Efficiency” or www.wangaratta.vic.gov.au Sustainability/ Green Guru.

Mawsons make the switch to renewable electricity FROM September 1, 2020 all of the mains electricity supplied to Mawsons-owned sites will be offset by an equivalent amount of electricity sourced from renewable generators. This includes the electricity used at Mawsons’ concrete batch plants, hard rock quarries, gravel and sand pits, workshops, laboratories and administration offices in Victoria and New South Wales. Electricity used at these 50 plus sites makes up the vast majority of Mawsons’ total annual electricity consumption. Sites where mains electricity is not available and those where Mawsons operate on land owned by others eg tolling sites, mines and remote mobile operations, will continue to be powered by diesel or the general grid while better alternatives are being sourced. Switching to renewable electricity is part of Mawsons’ overall Social Responsibility and Sustainability Policy. By making this switch, Mawsons’ on-going environmental impact will be dramatically reduced. Based on Mawsons’ 2019 electricity usage, the switch means approximately 5200 tonnes of carbon dioxide

emissions will be saved every year. In order to achieve this sustainable outcome Mawsons appointed a specialist energy management firm, 1Circle, who negotiated Power Purchase Agreements on Mawsons’ behalf with electricity retailers, Simply Energy and ERM. The retailers then contract to purchase an amount of electricity equivalent to Mawsons’ annual mains usage from various Energy Generators, including the European energy supply company, Engie. Engie supply electricity into the local grid from their wind farms in South Australia. To verify that Mawsons are receiving 100 per cent Renewable Electricity the Energy Generators provide Federal Government Certification for each megawatt hour of renewable electricity that Mawsons use. These certificates are known as Large Scale Generation Certificates and are traded by the retailers in the broader Electricity Certificates’ market to make sure that each unit of electricity consumed by Mawsons is matched by the same amount of renewable generation. On days when there is insuffi-

MAKING THE SWITCH: Mawsons will save approximately 5200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

cient wind at one wind farm or not enough direct sunshine at another solar generator Mawsons can continue their operations as normal and still use renewable electricity as the connection to the national electricity grid provides continuous supply. The market for buying and sell-

ing mains power across Australia is complex and closely regulated. It is managed by Government Authorities to provide a reliable and consistent supply of affordable electricity from all sources including hydro, wind, solar, gas and coal, regardless of generator ownership. By using tradable Large Scale

Generation Certificates as described here, Mawsons are reducing CO2 emissions significantly. Mawsons’ switch is also encouraging further investment in renewable power while still ensuring that their operations continue to meet the community’s demands for affordable construction materials.

Gardening for birds and bees PLANTS and flowers are not just here for our enjoyment - they are crucial for birds and insects as well. A few well-chosen species will add a special element to your garden, and there are many varieties of birds in our area that will appreciate some extra plant options like Blue wrens, Parrots and Lorikeets, Thornbills, Pardalotes, Honeyeaters, Finches and Firetails just to name a few. You may even be inspired to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count from October 19 to 25 so Head to the Birdlife Australia website for more details. These lovely birds rely on a variety of plant types to survive throughout the year. From seed producing plants and nectar laden flowers, to insect attracting species - the more plant variety in your garden, the more varied bird species you will enjoy. While birds are beautiful to look at, bees and other insects are crucially important to the biodiversity in your garden, and the broader environment. These days, when so many people are growing their own fruit and vegies at home, a balance of beneficial insects is important in keeping pest insects in check. A single Ladybug will eat around 5000 aphids in its life. Other fascinating insects to look out for are Hoverflies, Praying Mantis - so cool to watch, Butterflies, Dragonflies, Hon-

eybees, and Native bees. Some beautiful, hardy plants that pull double duty by supporting these birds and insects are listed below. Trees and larger shrubs: eucalypts, banksias, bottlebrush, sheoaks, tea trees, wattles, hakeas, lilly pillies, buddleja. Medium and small shrubs: grevillea, kunzea, native hibiscus, wax flowers, eremophilas, correas, crowea, salvias, rosemary, lavender. Low growing plants, grasses, and herbaceous perennials: tussock grasses, kangaroo and wallaby grasses, mat rushes, native and exotic daisies, borage, dill, parsley, basil, sunflowers, kangaroo paw, Queen Anne’s lace. Also remember to provide water points and habitat if possible. Bees will drown in water bowls if they get stuck so try a shallow dish with some pebbles or rocks in it. Place in a protected place, out of the wind. Large birds like to have a dip in deeper bird baths, place out of reach of predators like cats. Remember that birds and insects can become reliant on your water source through the heat of summer, so be sure to keep them filled. Bee hotels have become a bit of a trend lately, and they are very useful for native bees and wasps. Look online for how to make your own, it could be a fun project for the school holidays.

POLLINATOR: The blue-banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) is one of the most beautiful Australian native bees and is primarily attracted to blue or purple flowers like those found on lavender bushes. PHOTO: Shutterstock
