Keep up your good recycling habits DESPITE recent challenges facing Victoria’s recycling processing, it’s as important as ever to keep up your good habits and continue to recycle. Here are some tips from Sustainability Victoria to help keep you recycling correctly and reduce your waste in the first place. 1. Keep recycling and get it right It's more important now than ever to make sure that recycling is sorted correctly. Continue to sort your recycling and check what current guidelines are with your council. Recycling should be loose in the bin. Do not put recycling in plastic bags. Bagged recyclables can be a hazard to sorters and can clog the machinery at processing facilities. Plastic bags and other soft plastics, like bread bags, can be recycled through RedCycle bins at major supermarkets. Textiles, including clothing and shoes, can’t be put in household recycling bins, they are considered contaminants and can clog machines. There are many alternative disposal options, including donating and selling. E-waste (items which use cords and plugs, or batteries) can’t be recycled through kerbside collections. Check with your council regarding e-waste recycling in your area. The Victorian Government is banning e-waste in landfills from July 2019 and is investing in upgrading processing facilities across the state. Other items like fluorescent tubes, paint and batteries can be recycled by different pathways, but not through kerbside collections. Check with local authorities to find your nearest site for free disposal of household paint, batteries and fluorescent lights. 2. Avoid creating waste Waste avoidance is the best option to reduce the volume of recycling being processed.
A lot of kerbside recycling is food packaging, so you can make a difference when shopping by avoiding unnecessary packaging and trying reusable items where you can. Buy in bulk or buy larger-volume packages rather than individual items and transfer to smaller reusable containers (for example: buy a one-litre yoghurt tub rather than a smaller six-pack). Use reusable containers such as water bottles, coffee cups, packaging and shopping/ produce bags to reduce packaging. Look for reusable covers like beeswax wraps or silicon stretchable and washable wraps instead of cling wrap and foil. Eat in rather than getting takeaway or try taking your own reusable containers. Make some longer term changes when you see what works for your household, and reduce your general waste as well. 3. Safely store recycling at home If your recycling bin isn't full, skip the next collection. Many councils have fortnightly recycling collections. Make more room in the bin by squashing items that can be flattened, like juice or milk cartons, egg cartons, or cereal boxes. 4. Reuse or re-home items Vets and animal shelters might be able to use newspapers for animal beds or schools and kindergartens might be able to use clean items like egg cartons, cereal boxes and plastic bottles for craft supplies. Check in first to see if these items are needed before dropping them off. 5. Check what's happening in your council Always check with your council to get the most up to date information for your area. For more information on recycling, contact your local council or see www.sustainability. vic.gov.au.
BE VIGILANT: Keeping up your good recycling habits and staying informed can help reduce the number of recyclable items going to landfill.

Spacious and welcoming family home BUILT around 18 months ago near Benalla, a spacious family home built by Hadar Homes has become a haven for its residents. The home was based on customisation of Hadar's award winning Vancouver design, with features including a covered drive through portico to accommodate guests and protect both them and the home from the elements; plenty of storage (including a walk in linen closet and walk in robes); a large kitchen; family room; three living areas; and butler's pantry. The home is also environmentally friendly, being completely "off grid" in regards to power by having 100 per cent solar power with battery storage backup, and also using tank and bore water for the water supply. The home was designed using basic sustainability methods of orientation and capturing the best solar perspective possible for the site. In addition to the standard inclusions were double glazed windows, increased insulation to all internal utilities, increased external wall and ceiling insulation, and a septic system.
OPEN SPACE: The kitchen and dining areas provide plenty of space for dining and entertaining.
RELAXING: One of the home's living areas.
The home also has expansive rural views, particularly from the kitchen and living areas, and there is also an extended alfresco area off the kitchen/dining/living area.
IMPRESSIVE: This Benalla home, built by Hadar Homes, has helped provide a peaceful oasis for the home owners.
The client described it as a calming space to live in, as well as having plenty of room to welcome visitors. Such is the achievement in building the
home that it has been nominated in the Best Custom Home in the North East 2019 Master Builders Regional Building Awards, being held in Albury on June 14.

Native plants for winter flowers By MARIA WADLEY, Park Lane Nursery WINTER in the garden can seem a little drab, this need not be the case with so many wonderful native plants flowering at this time of year. Plants that are in flower now are not only lovely to look at but are also an important source of food for birds and insects during the cold weather. The stunning Eucalyptus Silver Princess has masses of nectar laden flowers which are enticing to Honeyeaters. Other Eucalypts that are worth considering are Eucalyptus ficifolia - West Australian Red Flowering Gum, or Eucalyptus leucoxylon ssp rosea – Red Flowering Yellow Gum. If you only have a small garden you could consider planting some Correas, these lovely plants are very hardy, and range in height from around 30cm to 1.5m. They flower profusely through the winter in colours ranging from pinks and white,

through to varying shades of orange. There will be one of these fantastic plants to suit most spots in the garden, attracting birds throughout the cooler months. Other gorgeous winter flowering native
plants include Acacia - Wattles, Thryptomene - Myrtles, Alyogyne - Native Hibiscus, Hardenbergia Happy Wanderer, Eremophilas – Emu Bush, and the always popular Anigozanthos - Kangaroo Paws.

Quality roofing key to safe and secure home WHEN people ask, "how do you keep your family safe", what comes to mind? Security fences? A guard dog? An alarm? Most people would not think of their roof, but LJ Ellery Roofing Pty Ltd know that a strong and sturdy roof is vitally important to keep you and your family safe from rain, hail, storms, wind and sun. "A good roof helps to heat and cool your house, adds value to your house, and provides you with protection from the elements for decades," said Sarah from LJ Ellery Roofing Pty Ltd. "Yet, so many people put off doing anything about it. "We do a lot of quotes at this time of year and we hear time and time again: 'we have been putting up with this for years'; 'hopefully now we can afford to get it sorted'; or 'I'm just organising quotes now, ready for my tax money to come back'. "Hearing these statements and meeting our customers is the reason we looked into offering interest free finance. It really doesn't have any benefit to us, other than more paperwork, which I love," Sarah joked. "Interest free finance basically allows you to
spread the cost of your roofing needs over a fixed period. "You can have comfortable repayments over an agreed period, from six months up to 12 months." If you have already been squirrelling away the dollars for your new roof but are not quite there, then you need only organise finance for the amount you need. Whether it's a full roof replacement with upgrade to better insulation, or it's just new gutters and downpipes you need, there are options available. The LJ Ellery Roofing Pty Ltd team are more than happy to assist. Maybe your house isn't in need of major works? This time of year can bring out those annoying little problems too, such as roof leaks, gutter leaks and downpipes, and LJ Ellery Roofing Pty Ltd have you covered there too. With an ever growing team, they are here to service your metal roofing needs in North East Victoria. ATTENTION TO DETAIL: LJ Ellery Roofing Pty Ltd can help you with your metal roofing needs.

Hadar Homes comes to Wangaratta ON Friday, June 21, Hadar Homes will open its first sales office in Wangaratta. Located at 53 Murphy Street, the office has been specifically created to service clients in Wangaratta, Myrtleford, Bright and Benalla. Hadar Homes has been building high quality homes in North East Victoria for 23 years with offices in Yarrawonga and Wodonga. The company was established in 1995 when managing director, Rick Leeworthy, witnessed a dispute between a client and their builder on a site in Yarrawonga. As a plumbing contractor, Rick realised that there was a vast gap between what the client expected and what the builder was offering. So Rick created Hadar Homes – a building company founded on offering clients the honest and reliable service they deserve. "Since then, Hadar Homes has worked tirelessly in creating a genuine building experience by putting our clients first," Rick said.

If the Madison 28 standard floorplan doesn’t suit, Hadar Homes has several other Madison floorplans (such as a backyard facing kitchen or a centralised kids retreat) that you can choose from. You are invited to come walk through their display homes at 5 and 7 Keysor Way White Box Rise, Wodonga, which are open daily from 1-5pm. Alternatively, join the Hadar Homes Wangaratta staff for free coffee and cake at their official store opening on Friday, June 21 from 10.30am to 6pm at 53 Murphy Street, Wangaratta. gardening jobs for winter
Neglecting your garden during winter? Check out these winter gardening tips to keep your garden in shape during the colder months. Have you been out into your garden recently? I don’t mean the quick dash up the front path, but down the back? With the winter days being cold and grey and all the plants are looking a bit tattered and weather worn; it can be hard to muster enthusiasm for the garden. In cold, northern hemisphere climates gardens virtually shut down over winter. Gardening tasks revolve around preventing squirrels from robbing seeds from the bird feeder. But that’s not true for Australian winter gardening. Winter is an exciting time to be outside. Okay, perhaps not if it’s raining, but most of the time you can find a sheltered spot to do some therapeutic gardening to chase away the winter blues. Indeed, even five minutes outdoors can lift your spirits. Studies released in scientific journals have shown that a short walk or a spot of gardening does wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing. And the cooler conditions means you can take on some tasks that raise a sweat, such as laying a new path or digging a pond. If they sound a bit too hard, here are some quick winter jobs to get you outdoors and active.
1 RAKE THE LEAVES AND PICK UP TWIGS, STICKS AND BARK. This is a winter job that can involve all the family and warms you as you work. Drifts of fallen leaves and bark, along with twigs and sticks, accumulate on lawns and paths over winter. Rake leaves, bark and small twigs for mulch or to add to the compost heap. Sticks needs to be broken up or use them instead to light indoor winter fires, for a family barbecue or as plant support.
2 AERATE THE LAWN Many lawns are compacted and weedy after the long drought. Aerating now lets moisture into the soil so you can begin to rejuvenate the lawn in spring. Use a garden fork or hire a powered aerator. Top dress with a fine layer of coarse sand or loam. Fertilise in spring. If rain is puddling and not soaking in, even after aeration, apply a hose-on soil wetting agent.
DIG THE VEGIE GARDEN & PLANT NEW CROPS
3
Provided your soil isn’t sodden, winter can be a great time to dig a new vegie or garden bed or to turn in green manure crops to get the garden ready for planting in spring. It’s also a good time to pull or hoe out weeds and cut back invasive plants. There’s still plenty of time to grow some tasty fresh vegetables in your garden. Plant snow peas, English spinach or some mini vegies, such as small-headed cabbage or cut-and-come-again lettuce.
4
PRUNE AND TIDY
While plants are bare you can more easily remove dead or crowded growth or spot invasive climbers and remove them. Don’t prune late winter or spring-flowering shrubs but do get stuck into roses and grapevines.
5 CHEER YOURSELF WITH POTTED COLOUR Plant up a couple of pots with annuals. Choose pansies or polyanthus that are already in flower for an instant show. Water well after planting and keep in bloom by deadheading and watering every 10 days with a liquid plant food.

Creamy broccoli, chicken p and wild rice soup AS the weather cools down, so too does our exercise regime and suddenly, all willpower is lost. In winter, our metabolism revs up to warm our body, making us hungrier, leading us to crave heavy foods like creamy pastas and pies, but comfort eating doesn’t need to weigh you down. According to Nuts For Life dietitian Belinda Neville, tree nuts are a rich source of healthy unsaturated fats that help to switch on satiety hormones in your gut, helping to reduce hunger pangs. “As well as helping to manage your weight, a handful of nuts a day provides important nutrients for immunity, heart health and can even lower the GI of carb rich meals,” said Ms Neville. Try this warming recipe which serves six, created by Melanie Lionello for Nuts for Life, to keep nourished as the cold nights close in. Ingredients 2 heads of broccoli, cut into florets and stalks diced 1 red onion, peeled and sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2L salt-reduced chicken stock 1 cup wild rice 3 chicken thighs, sliced 1 cup almonds ¼ cup cashews 2 sprigs of thyme 1 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste Juice of one lemon
Method In a large heavy based saucepan, saute onion in three tablespoons of oil until translucent on medium heat. Add garlic and saute for a minute until fragrant. Add broccoli, thyme, cashews and stock and replace lid on saucepan. Simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes until broccoli is tender. Turn off heat. Remove thyme sprigs. Using a stick blender, blend the soup until smooth. You can also use a normal blender, using a ladle to transfer from the soup pot to the jug to blend. Once the soup is smooth, add wild rice and chicken. Simmer for 45 minutes until rice is tender. While the soup is simmering, preheat oven to 180 degrees. Add almonds, 1 tablespoon of oil, lemon juice and paprika to a baking tray and combine. The easiest way to do this is to ‘shuffle’ the almonds by quickly moving the tray side to side to coat them. Roast almonds for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Season soup with salt and pepper to your taste then serve soup with a handful of roasted almonds on top and some additional thyme if you like. You can also add a squeeze of grilled lemon over the soup for a citrus twist.
