Diverse garden showcases native plants EVEN though Glenrowan based veterinarian Jo Watkins has only lived in her current home for the past three years, it has not stopped her establishing a diverse, sustainable garden that showcases native plants. The grounds surrounding her home feature predominantly native plants, including a large variety of fruit trees, a vegetable garden, and plenty of native trees, flowers and shrubs. The fruit trees feature everything from lemons to blood oranges, while her vegetable garden includes many types of lettuce, cabbage, kale and broad beans, just to name a few. Her passion for the beauty of native plant life has seen her include a range of correas, grevilleas, acacias, flowering gums and more within the garden. Jo said the garden had a number of functions, including providing food for her family and creating a thriving ecosystem and green space for native birds and animals. A member of the Australian Plant Society, Jo said she was passionate about using native plants in her garden.
“They grow quickly and they're designed to grow here,” she said. “It just seems like the right thing to do.” As well as regular general garden maintenance, Jo is a firm believer in mulching and composting to provide nutrients for her garden. Her compost includes garden and paper waste, as well as coffee grounds from a local café, and the compost helps to feed a worm farm, which in turn provides Jo with nutrient rich worm castings and ‘worm juice’ for the garden. Jo encourages anyone interested in gardening with native plants to contact the Australian Plant Society via apsvic.org.au or talk to a local member of the society.

Great gardening opportunities in winter SO far it’s been a dry start to winter and it seems like the forecast is for that to continue. This means that you will have a good chance to get out in the garden without the risk of a drenching. With the sunny days there is still an opportunity to do some planting, just be aware of frost tender plants that may need a bit of a cover up until they are established. Deciduous plants don’t suffer this, as they are heading into dormancy now. If you like colour, have a look at planting a crepe myrtle - in autumn, they show a range of vibrant shades before leaving their marbled trunk on show. In summer they flower profusely, bringing in birds and insects. Bagged fruit and nut trees are available now - apples, pears, plums, nectarines, peaches, and walnuts, as well as ornamental trees. Prepare your soil with a mixture of aged manure, compost or an organic soil improver. Asparagus crowns and rhubarb are all readily available as well.
PURPLE REIGN: Hardenbergia violacea, otherwise known as Native Sarsaparilla.
Wait a year or two to harvest your asparagus, giving it enough time to establish a good root system.
Potatoes can be potted up in bags or prepped beds in areas that are not prone to frosts. For winter fruiting trees, have a look for
olives in a number of varieties, as well as citrus. Veggies to put in now are your winter greens, brassicas such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage. Plant your peas and beans now so that come spring they are well established and ready to go. Looking good now and for the season are a variety of banksias, hakea, hardenbergia, thryptomene, grevillea and correas. Also try cyclamen, and camelias for some great winter colour. Use pansies and violas to brighten dull pockets in the garden or hanging baskets that need a lift after summer. Freshen up your potting mix and replace with new splashes of colour. Maybe add some dichondra seeds that will grow and cascade over the side of the pot if it is to sit in a sheltered area under cover. Happy winter gardening, and for more information or advice, see the staff at Wangaratta's Park Lane Nursery.

Upcycled pillowcase shopping bags WITH the ongoing phasing out of single use plastic bags, eco friendly alternatives are high on the agenda. This upcycled bag is made from a single old pillowcase, is very roomy and takes very little time to make – because half the sewing is already done. If you are feeling extra creative, you could fashion the offcuts from this project into pockets for this bag, or alternatively, use
the offcuts for small scrap projects, applique or quilting. This project is useful if you have excess pillowcases at home, or a pillowcase that doesn’t suit your décor, or you could also make this project with pillowcases from the op shop. Check out craft blogs on the internet for other creative materials to upcycle into bags, from tea towels to old pairs of jeans and T-shirts.
METHOD: 1. On your pillowcase, draw two opposing curved ‘L’ shapes on the open, top end of the pillowcase. Freehand is fine, but make sure the ‘L’ shapes finish at the same height on each side.
3. Turn your bag inside out and sew together the two ends of the strap with right sides facing.
2. Cut out your opposing ‘L’ shapes to create the bag strap.
YOU WILL NEED: > An old pillowcase > Fabric scissors or pinking shears > An erasable fabric marking pen or tailor’s chalk/pencil > Sewing machine and thread > Measuring implements if you need them
4. Pin a hem with the raw edges of your bag and sew to create a more polished and durable look. If you have an overlocker, you could overlock the edges instead.
5. You now have your finished bag and are ready for your next shopping trip.

Time to clear out roof gutters
GET TO IT: Make sure your gutters are free from debris.
WITH the impact in the past few months of falling autumn leaves, now is a good time to clear out your gutters if you have not already done so. Leaves, twigs and other natural litter can all find their way into gutters, which poses a number of risks including: t $MPHHFE EPXOQJQFT SFTVMUJOH JO USBQQFE rainwater backing up and overflowing into
eaves and the inside of buildings causing damage. In addition to the potential for damage from rainwater overflowing into eaves and ceilings, corroded gutters and downpipes are ineffective and can cause problems within walls and may damage the foundations of houses and out-buildings such as sheds and garages. t 5SBQQFE XFU MFBWFT UIBU TJU JO HVUUFSJOH

do this work themselves. Anyone, whether they be homeowner or qualified professional, who uses a ladder must follow strict safety guidelines. Keep safe with chainsaws this winter CHAINSAWS and similar power implements are very useful labour saving devices, particularly at this time of year when you need to keep your woodpile stocked up, but if you are using them, the team at GAS Honda Motorcycles and Power Equipment advise you to take heed of safety precautions. If you are working alone with a chainsaw, the risks if you hurt yourself are heightened. For this reason, if you are going to carry out work with a chainsaw alone, make sure to let someone know of your whereabouts so they can raise the alarm if something is wrong. You should always be ready to make a quick exit from the area where you are working, and carry your mobile phone to keep the lines of communication open. Be aware of your chainsaw's safety features and make sure you are wearing appropriate safety gear, including a protective helmet and glasses/goggles, a forestry jacket to give coverage on your arms, protective trousers and boots, and gloves. All these things can help prevent or mini-

cracks, and if working with other people, make sure they are a safe distance away from the possible felling area.
S L A DE
Don't forget to make an informed decision on which direction you are going to fell the tree. When handling the saw itself, wrap your fingers and thumbs completely around the handles and hold your left hand thumb under the front handle to reduce the force of a kickback, hold it close to your body for balance and accuracy, bend your knees slightly, and make sure no-one is within three metres of you. For added safety, never have the chain rotating while you are moving to another spot. If you want to increase your proficiency, it can be a smart idea to take a chainsaw handling course, and of course, you should always get your equipment checked regularly. For more information on their chainsaw range and advice on chainsaw safety and maintenance, talk to the GAS Honda Motorcycles and Power Equipment team by calling into the shop at 61-65 Parfitt Road, Wangaratta, or call (03) 5721 7400.

Stay vigilant against house fires this winter COOKING and electrical fires still cause the most house fires across Victoria, according to CFA’s latest preventable fire statistics. In 2017, in CFA districts, there were 1588 preventable house fires, causing more than $42 million in damage. Overall, preventable residential fires were down 2.9 per cent in 2017. Most preventable fires start in the kitchen, followed by lounge rooms, bedrooms, chimneys and then garages. The 2017 Preventable Fire Statistics demonstrate that while CFA community education efforts are having a profound effect, there is a long way to go in reducing the amount of preventable fires in the community. The number of fires starting in the kitchen is down eight per cent from 2016, however, they still make up more than a third (37 per cent) of incidents. Cooking related fires are down 12 per cent. Fires starting at stoves, ovens and cooktops led to 274 incidents. Electrical fires are the largest cause of property loss, causing an estimated $9.8 million in damage. CFA acting chief officer Garry Cook said that while the drop in preventable fires was encouraging, home fire safety education and prepar-
edness remained a top priority for the CFA. “Working smoke alarms save lives. “This is clearly demonstrated through the fact that while there were more than 1500 preventable house fires across the state, property loss was far greater than the loss of life,” Mr Cook said. “Our message is clear. Check your smoke alarm’s battery and if your smoke alarm is aged 10 years or more the whole unit should be changed.” Mr Cook said education was often an overlooked, but arguably the most important, aspect of what CFA does. “The best way to stop a fire is to teach a person how to be safe in the home and stop a fire before it even begins. “This includes reaching out to our multi-cultural communities, making sure regardless of whether you speak English or not, you are safe around fires. “Whether we are educating people about not drying clothes too close to the heater, never leaving cooking unattended, or keeping lighters away from children, it is all part of our ultimate goal of protecting life and property.” For more information on home fire safety, see www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

NEW Display Home 112 Phillipson Street, Wangaratta Open 12pm to 5pm Friday to Tuesday One of the North East’s leading home builders has opened a new display home in Wangaratta. After more than two decades of building residential properties in the region, Cavalier Homes now brings Wangaratta residents a first-hand look at their quality homes. The stunning new ‘Manly 30’, is just one of the extensive range of floor plans in the Cavalier Homes range. Cavalier Homes Director Paul Hodgkin said the home is designed with the growing family in mind, with every square metre of the Manly devoted to family living. With a well-appointed family zone that opens out onto a large outdoor living area for easy entertaining with friends, the home is designed for hosting and relaxed living while still allowing seclusion for the things that are just for you. A private kids zone or study area and a choice of three or four bedrooms will allow ample space for you, your family and your friends to enjoy every inch of this beautiful home. The Manly is just one of many homes built by local franchisees Dale Paddle and Paul Hodgkin, with the construction entirely completed by local trades. ‘Wangaratta is a thriving city and it’s really pleasing for us to be able to contribute to that growth. We hope our new display home provides a great opportunity for Wangaratta residents and the broader community to see how we can help them achieve their new home goals’, Mr Hodgkin said. As well as the new display home, we are also proud to be involved with the construction of a new home for the 4 Kids and Carers Future Foundation benefiting the Holt family. Mr Hodgkin said the community support has been incredible and they looked forward to getting construction underway. The new Cavalier Homes display home is now open Friday to Tuesday, from 12pm to 5pm at 112 Phillipson Street, Wangaratta.

Take action against burn risk EXPERTS are urging parents and carers to be vigilant and take action to reduce the risks of burns and scalds during winter, a time of heightened burns risk. The call comes at the beginning of National Burns Awareness Month during June – an Australia wide campaign to raise awareness of the prevention and appropriate first aid measures for minor burns. Prevalence data from the Burns Registry of Australia and New Zealand (BRANZ) show that during 2016/17, nearly 1000 Australian and New Zealand children were admitted to a burns unit. Scalds were the most common cause of burns in children (57 per cent), followed by contact (23 per cent) and flame (10 per cent) burns. Kidsafe Australia spokesperson, Holly Fitzgerald, highlighted the burn and scald dangers in the home kitchen, saying this was the location for half of all child burn injuries. “The majority of burns are preventable. “The kitchen is the most dangerous room of the house for a young child to be burned,
HOT: There are many burn hazards in the home, especially in winter.
usually occurring while near an adult preparing food or hot drinks. “We need to be vigilant and take steps to restrict our children’s access to the kitchen during meal preparation times, to reduce the
risk of a serious burn or scald occurring.” “At Kidsafe, we recommend placing hot drinks safely away from table or bench edges and never holding a child with a hot drink in hand. “All it takes is for them to throw their arms
around and spill the hot water onto themselves. “Hot liquid at 60°C only takes one second to cause a third-degree burn to a child’s skin. “Water boils at 100°C,” said Ms Fitzgerald. Other common places where children are at risk of burn injuries include the living room, bathroom, outdoor kitchen or garden, particularly when children were playing. Dr Warwick Teague, director of trauma at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne said that burn injuries can have a long term impact on children, not just physically, but also mentally, adding that the right first aid is crucial. “If a burn happens, then it’s critical that cool running water is applied to the burn area for a minimum of 20 minutes,” Dr Teague said. Seek medical attention if the burn or scald is on the face, hands, feet, genitals or buttocks, if it is larger than a 20 cent coin or blistered. As part of the National Burns Awareness Month, Kidsafe Australia is urging all parents and carers to download the simple safety checklist at www.kidsafe.com.au/nationalburns-awareness-month/.

The right building contract can save you time and money THE latest edition of Australian Building Industry Contracts launched in April, representing the most contemporary version of the most widely used building contract in Australia. The contracts, known as 'ABIC', provide the market with an up-to-the-minute suite of standard form contracts for a variety of building works, from small extensions right through to large residential and commercial projects. “The best thing about ABIC is that they are developed by builders and architects, designed to be simple and clear, and reduce the chances of dispute and confusion that is frequently the cause of costly delays,” said CEO of Master Builders Australia, Denita Wawn. “The 2018 version of ABIC represents the most comprehensive update in several years, and recent improvements will provide owners, builders and architects with greater certainty when embarking on a building project,” she said. Arising from a partnership between Master Builders Australia and the Australian Institute of Architects, ABIC contracts have a focus on avoiding disputes by ensuring the fine detail is clear and simple.
SIGN: Whether you're building or renovating, make sure you have the right contract for your needs.
“A strong and transparent relationship between architects, builders and their clients delivers the best outcomes for all parties,” Australian Institute of Architects chief exec-
tive Jennifer Cunich said. “The updated ABIC suite provides practitioners and consumers with comprehensive, accessible contracts to help ensure projects
are delivered on time and on budget.” The ABIC suite offers both base and subcontracts for a variety of works including: t .BKPS 8PSLT – medium to large commercial or residential projects involving work to be completed in stages; t 4JNQMF 8PSLT – smaller to medium sized residential and commercial projects; and t #BTJD 8PSLT – small projects or those involving a single trade. Denita Wawn said anyone embarking on a building project, large or small, should make sure that their architect and builder are using the latest version of ABIC. “Together with the optional plain English user guides and forms, the 2018 ABIC contracts offer an effective way to ensure everyone knows where they stand, reducing the chances of expensive delay and costly project blow-outs,” she said. The 2018 ABIC are now available for purchase from either the Institute’s contract website or MBA’s website, see either architecturecontracts.com.au or www.masterbuilders.com.au/Shop/ABIC-Suite.

Four favourite alfresco roofing options Louvre roofs The louvre roof comes with various options that can be designed to provide the type of cover you want. They can work with you to design a roof that integrates with your home seamlessly, allowing you to climate control the sun as you need. Louvre roofs also offer a range of colour options, working with the high quality and design options of Louvretec product range (www.louvretec.com.au).
Retractable roofs Retractable roofs ensure you can get the most out of your alfresco area, offering not just the flexibility of opening or closing the louvres, but also the functionality of opening the whole sky to your outdoor area. With the technology to slide the entire roof open to one side, the sky really is the limit – with an uninterrupted view. What that means for you is even more versatility to suit the weather conditions.
WHEN you are deciding on the roofing for your patio, pergola, deck or alfresco, it is important to choose the type of roofing that’s going to best suit your home, and how you use your outdoor area. Obviously, you want to protect what’s underneath your roof from the cold frosts and rain in
winter and the hot sun of summer. Therefore, your roofing needs to be good quality and installed professionally to provide the right cover . There are a variety of roofing options you can choose. Here are four of Ultimate Alfresco's favourites.
Insulated panels A popular option in alfresco design to help create an indoor-outdoor feeling and help manage temperatures are insulated ceilings. If you want your alfresco to feel like it is part of your home and create a natural flow from your indoor space to outdoors, having an insulated ceiling can help achieve that.
Open arbours An open arbour can provide shelter, or shade, and serve as an accent to your home. It can blend in with the landscape or be a focus point. Usually the walls and roof consist of open framework, and they are great for growing vines over creating shade in summer and allowing the sun through in winter.
At Ultimate Alfresco, they specialise in a range of different roofing options for your home. These include retractable roofs, fully openable louvred roofs, fixed end louvred roofs, open arbours, engineered glass roofs, aluminium shade slats, insulated panels, Colorbond steel, tiles or other product to match with your existing décor, and more.
