music. moments. memories. Welcome You’ll see that word many times in this program. We mean it every time. This annual jazz and blues festival is a highly anticipated event for many. Year in, year out, through rain, hail and sunshine, we stage a nationally important musical event, with the help of so many people that it’s almost overwhelming. The festival has had good years and bad years. Speak to any 29 year old and they’ll say the same. But this year, our 29th has a great feel to it. With a program that zings with international artists, fresh new faces and legends, there truly is something for everyone. The Blues Marquee and Wangaratta Motor Group Community Stage have found the perfect home together, in Merriwa Park, and that’s also where you’ll find the Sunday markets,

beneath the towering trees and in the gorgeous green environs of a ready-made festival precinct. All your favourite food and drink vendors will be there. In a new move this year, we’re also introducing a late night club vibe at St Pats Hall, bringing a relaxed ambience into this beautiful hall, with comfy seating low lights and a full bar thanks to our friends at Malt Shed Brewery The National Jazz Awards are a cornerstone of the festival, and this year our focus is on drums. Ten fantastic musicians will beat a path to the finals. The awards concert on Sunday afternoon is one of the festival’s most popular – but don’t worry, if you can’t squeeze into the WPAC theatre, we’re streaming live on Facebook this year so you’ll be able to participate

in the excitement no matter where you are! And our app is refreshed and ready for 2018 as well, with even more artist information, more detailed scheduling and more. To our thousands of returning patrons and to first time visitors, we can only apologise that this weekend of music isn’t longer. But don’t despair, if you’re planning to stay and enjoy for an extra day, there’s so much to do, from bike trails to wineries, national parks to historic villages. Be sure and visit our Visitor Information Centre for great advice on things to do in our beautiful region. Have fun. Enjoy the music, moments and memories. And above all, have a great weekend! A message from the Premier I am pleased to welcome you to the 2018 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. For close to three decades, this Festival has brought some of the best jazz and blues artists to regional Victoria. This year’s line-up, featuring more than 300 artists from around the world, is no exception. And, as one of the nation’s foremost jazz and blues events, it is fitting that the Festival is also the long-term home of the National Jazz Awards. I congratulate the finalists and wish them all the best of luck. This weekend isn’t only about the music- it’s also

about showcasing this part of our state. As a local, I know just how much Wangaratta and the surrounding High Country have to offer - so I encourage every visitor to discover it for themselves. Whether you’re performing or just attending this year, I wish you a great weekend.

welcome to the 2018 wangaratta festival of jazz & blues A message from the Artistic Team I am very excited about the 2018 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues and proud of the work that Zoe Hauptmann, Frank Davidson, Scott Solimo and myself have put in to assemble the program for the 29th iteration of the festival. This year has one of the most international line-ups the Festival has presented, with artists coming from USA, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Japan, India and Indonesia. But it would not be the Wangaratta Festival without collaborations: this year is no different, with a number of these international collaborations led or co-led by Australians, indicative of how our artists are increasingly engaging internationally at a high level. As always, there is something for everyone from the hardcore aficionado to the casual listener who just enjoys good music and wants to enjoy a drink amongst the trees. One exciting innovation this year is the new “club vibe” at St Pat’s Hall,

offering a more intimate experience showcasing a range of established and emerging artists across the spectrum of jazz and blues. Next year we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Festival. Of course, there are already a bunch of treats being planned for this significant milestone, but we want to get there in style so don’t think we are holding anything back this year! We would like to thank our Board for their support, our enthusiastic new event management team who have worked tirelessly, and all of the partners, sponsors and volunteers who make it all happen. And of course, you, for enjoying and supporting live music and culture. So, what are you waiting for? Go and hear some music already! Adam Simmons Co-Artistic Director

A message from the Chair Welcome music lovers to the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. This is my first year as Chair of the Festival; it is with great anticipation and a sense of excitement that we present a great program for the weekend, promising fantastic music, food and local beers and wines. Once again, our award winning artistic team have woven a fascinating program of international, Australian and local artists who will enlighten us in collaborations not heard before, with new works and awesomely played standards and originals from all over the world. The challenge is to whittle the program down to concerts that appeal, but also to find those that open your eyes to something new. Since taking on the role of Board Chair, I’ve heard many stories of the journeys that bring people to love jazz and blues. Even more interesting, the path within jazz. Usually these revolve around late nights sitting in the corner of a restaurant or Jazz Club or sharing a wine or beer around a stereo with the floor littered with LP’s (or for the younger ones CD’s) whereas now we dip into Spotify and YouTube or check playlists on ABC Jazz or the wonderfully idiosyncratic and enlightening presentations from our community radio stations. My own introduction to jazz was my father’s early jazz LP’s – Chico Hamilton, Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Thelonius Monk and early Dave Brubeck (Dad always thought Dave sold out to commerciality

4

after the first 3 or 4 albums) were common names bandied about the stereo system. He was a self-proclaimed jazz fascist, whereas Mum was classically brought up – both made it their personal mission to educate the other – it made for a broad and eclectic musical education and kept me open minded. Later in my life I got an opportunity to start a Jazz degree at the ANU, but the pressures of a mortgage and a growing business drew me into a life where I remain an enthusiastic amateur jazz pianist and more enthusiastic audience (or is that audient?). I’m drawn always back to the quote of Duke Ellington – “There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it’s successful; if it doesn’t it has failed.” Or this from Townes Van Zandt “There’s only two kinds of music: the Blues and Zippety Doo Dah” Enjoy your wander through the various kinds of jazz and blues on offer this weekend, may you successfully avoid ‘the other kind’. Many heartfelt thanks to the Jazz and Blues Army who make this weekend possible. Yours in good music Mark Bolsius Chair

welcome to the 2018 wangaratta festival of jazz & blues A message from the Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Welcome to the 2018 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. I am honoured to again be involved in this iconic event which continues to be a wonderful celebration of music, community and the local region. It is a great time of year to be in North East Victoria with beautiful spring weather providing sunny days and clear nights. From those who want to dance to the beat in the street or head indoors to a performance, the scene is set for a fantastic weekend. As always the food, wine and drinks offering is first class with the region’s culinary providers serving up their best selections. Take this opportunity to indulge in some tasty local produce and a matching beverage while enjoying the entertainment. The festival is a wonderful community event and each year volunteers so willingly put up

their hands to be involved in the many aspects of its operation. Others open their homes to visitors to accommodate the huge number of guests seeking a place to stay in Wangaratta and surrounding towns. I do hope you enjoy our warm country hospitality. My congratulations are extended to the committee who works tirelessly year-round to present such a diverse musical program. This year you can see young, up and coming performers experiencing their first Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues to internationally renowned musicians bringing the house down. However you choose to experience the festival I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy all this beautiful part of regional Victoria has to offer. Tim McCurdy MP Nationals Member for Ovens Valley

A message from the Rural City of Wangaratta I am starting to get my running shoes on to celebrate our 29th Jazz Festival. From a small beginning in 1990, the Festival continues to grow in stature. We have witnessed many changes over those years, some have worked, whilst others have not been in our best interests. Just a few months ago, with the departure of Board Chairman Paul Squires and other board members, some decisions needed to be made as to the future of the Festival. Last year’s event was very well supported, but the costs associated with some of the venues saw the new Board under Mark Bolsius look for alternatives. With this in mind, the Community Stage will join the Blues Marquee in our beautiful sunken Merriwa Park among the magnificent red gums. We are extremely proud of our local musicians, many of whom will entertain you in the Community Stage, sponsored by Wangaratta Motors. Merriwa Park will also play host to the Sunday market. I cannot thank the volunteer Board enough for their commitment and enthusiasm in making the festival tick. This also applies to our band of helpers without whom we could not survive. This year’s festival is shaping up to be a great weekend, and with the National Jazz Awards

5

focusing on drummers this year, I believe we will all be falling over one another to listen to their talents. The Board and their acclaimed programming team have again put together a weekend of excellent music for all. So make sure you keep looking to ensure you don’t miss out on anything. And don’t forget to view David Godkin’s “Bright Lights Big City” as you wander the streets and arcades. Please don’t be afraid to ask for assistance if needed, there are many who can set you on the right path. On behalf of myself and fellow councillors of the Rural City of Wangaratta, I welcome you all to our fine city for a weekend of music, fun and friendship, that will see you return again in 2019. This of course will be the big one our thirtieth birthday. Planning has already commenced as to how we can properly thank and acknowledge those jazz followers who have been supporting the festival over the past now 29 years. tips for choosing your gig Has the program put your head into a spin? Us too! This year's program has great choices and you'll want to enjoy them all.

National Jazz Awards With a focus on the drums and ten fantastic finalists, the jazz finals concerts are a highlight for many festival visitors, and they might become yours too! The finalists play in heats across the weekend, leading to the final three in an award performance on Sunday afternoon. You'll hear a short concert of three pieces from each finalist during the heats. Support these young musicians by entering and exiting quietly and giving them your full attention!

Newbies New to jazz? Never heard the blues? Our top tip is to sample as much as you can. You'll know what you love when you hear it. Download the app for musician profiles to get you started. Our volunteers are also happy to help direct you to venues and if you find yourself in a queue, why not start a conversation. Recommendations are a great way to start.

Nothin' but the Blues The Blues Marquee is in Merriwa Park again this year, among the tall trees and playing host to UK visitors The Starlite Campbell Band and Matt Schofield, and don't miss Jeff Lang in trio format. Australian blues royalty will be in force with the Backlsiders, Ray Beadle and the all-star Box of Blues featuring Geoff Achison and Kerri Simpson.

Good time, classic jazz You'll be heading for the Pinsent for some sensational jazz this weekend. Make time on Saturday night for Wilma Reading with the Andrew Butt Trio +. Wilma has performed with Duke Ellington Orchestra, appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, featured at New York’s Copacabana Night Club and starred on London’s West End. Enjoy a Duke Ellington interlude with Melbourne-based trio Philéas Fogg, or join Kate Wadey for a fresh yet sophisticated journey through your favourite jazz standards. Wangaratta locals the High Society Jazz Orchestra play classic jazz from the 1920s into the Swing Era and beyond.

'I don't really like jazz, but…' Shhh… don’t tell anyone but we’ve got more than just jazz and blues: we’ve got the funk of the Orszaczky Budget Orchestra and The Shuffle Demons (Canada); we’ve got smooth sounds of soul with The Meltdown, Sweethearts; and we’ve got global sounds from the Middle East and Asia with groups like Garden Quartet, The Three Seas and Julian Banks Group.

Serious, chin-stroking jazz Open your ears and head into the WPAC Theatre and Hall for an array of international visitors and outstanding locals. Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet (Netherlands) returns to the festival with new music, FORQ bring their contemporary take on jazz from the USA, Ten Part Invention celebrate over 30 years, the Australian Art Orchestra present their new world premiere and Sirens make their festival debut.

Insider tip Love a late night vibe? For a great late night live music experience this year, visit St Pat’s Hall on Saturday and Sunday nights. A full bar thanks to our friends Malt Shed Brewery, lounge seating and low lights. This is St Pat’s like you haven't seen it at the festival before.

adam simmons’ festival wishlist During the festival weekend you may occasionally see a blur carrying a saxophone, making its way from venue to venue. From time to time, the blur may stop and chat to a fellow musician or a fan. And then off he’ll go again. That’s Co-Artistic Director Adam Simmons, who with Frank Davidson, Zoe Hauptmann and Scott Solimo programs the festival. Busy and engaged at the best of times, the festival adds another layer. In a few quiet moments between the announcement of this year’s program and the festival itself, Adam took the time to let us know what he’s looking forward to hearing this year. Looking at his schedule, we’re not sure he’ll get to all of them, but everybody needs a wishlist…

The Blues The Shuffle Demons - a dynamic and high energy outfit from Canada, will be kicking the Blues Stage off in Merriwa Park on Friday 2nd - this year we are starting with a bang, so get there early. The Meltdown - more on the soul side of the blues, this group will be perfect on a Saturday afternoon amongst the trees. These guys are no slouches, having recently been the backing band of choice for funk & jazz legend, Maceo Parker for his Ray Charles Tribute.

What’s new? Cheryl Durongpisitkul’s “Follow me through the Red Ash” is based on elements from Igor Stravinsky and draw upon influences from jazz, 20th Century classical and rock.” A Great Rack and an Empty Reverb - for those looking for the more experimental and contemporary end of things - I saw this group as part of Emily Bennett’s project for Lebowskis’ Development Residency program, an unusual trio of voice, guitar and drums, with a heavy dose of electronic processing thrown in as well.

David Jones - Third Ear - David Jones and Evro Evripidou will conjure up magical worlds of sound - the level of instrumental mastery they display is ridiculous, but always presented with a spirit of generosity and welcome. Wilma Reading with Andrew Butt Trio + - Wilma Reading is a true jazz doyenne, with a list of accolades an arm long, yet mostly achieved abroad. It will be a rare pleasure to have her perform at Wangaratta Festival, with regular collaborators, the Andrew Butt Trio +. Emil Viklický/Miroslav Bukovsky - I am really looking forward to hearing this duo - Miro is one of the most inspiring and open trumpet players I have heard, while Emil is described as the “patriarch of Czech jazz piano” and comes with a heavy pedigree.

International Connections Jazzahead - attending this German jazz industry showcase for the past two years has been fruitful in maintaining Wangaratta Festival’s strong links to Europe. This year sees the return of Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet (Netherlands), last seen at Wang in 2010, as well as ex-pat Canberran, Alex Stuart with his French quintet. But also on their first visit to Australia will be German ensemble, Trio ELF, who have been one of the main highlight groups I’ve seen at Jazzahead.

What am I up to? Adam Simmons Creative Music Ensemble with Afrolankan Drumming System - The Calling premiered earlier this year as the fourth part of my series, The Usefulness of Art, at fortyfivedownstairs. This is possibly my most personal of works, exploring ideas of identity and place. This collaboration is with Afrolankan Drumming System, the explosive duo of Ray Pereira and Kanchana Karunaratna, with their unique combination of African and Sri Lankan drumming concepts.

Garden Quartet - led by Persian instrumentalist and vocalist, Gelareh Pour, this group may not be strictly “jazz” but all the elements are there in terms of consideration of tone, musical interplay, embrace of the new and a willingness to explore.

Sumire Kuribayashi: Pieces of Colour - Japanese pianist’s beautiful suite for sextet, also with James Macaulay, Niran Dasika and Shun Ishiwaka - quite honoured to be a part of this!

JAKAL - this funk outfit are going to lift the roof off St Pat’s Hall. They may be still in their teens, don’t let that fool you!

Clayton Doley’s Bayou Billabong - this 10 piece all-star band is going to be a hoot to play with, led by Clayton Doley, a giant of the Australian blues scene - and maybe a little daunting as I play alongside the irrepressible Paul Williamson on bari sax!

Masters Chris Young Quartet - with absolute legendary drummer, Ted Vining, now based in Hobart, along with Nick Haywood and Tom Fryer - these guys are some of the most fearless improvisers in the country. Their recent CD got a rare 4.5 stars from SMH’s John Shand.

24

The Blues Brothers 3677 - Always a local favourite, led by my fellow Co-Artistic Director, Scott Solimo. I first met Scott a number of years ago when I was asked to fill-in with this band and it’s still a fun one to get asked to do. Some things just work - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

sunday market

The Sunday market at Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues is an institution that we all look forward to. Whether your Sunday includes the Jazz Mass, a lie-in after a huge Saturday night or an early concert, be sure not to miss the market with its great vibe, and lots to see and do, plus a chance to purchase that special something for that special somebody. This year, in line with our vision of a festival precinct at Merriwa Park, you'll find the Sunday market stalls lined up near the Tennis Club building. Kids’ rides and fun stall will be located in the playground area, creating a fun kidzone for the younger festival goers (and if you're at the market with kids around 10:30am, your festival or blues pass will also get you in to see Playschool’s Justine Clarke on the blues stage – a perfect Sunday morning starter for the young and the young-at-heart) Stroll through the more than 100 stalls under Merriwa Park's majestic shade trees. There's the usual great variety of stalls selling crafts, gourmet foods, treats and gifts, with plenty of activities and things to see for all.

bright lights, big city

As you wander around Wangaratta during the festival this year you might see colourful drawings of windows and buildings dotted around. With contributions from as far away as the Melbourne suburb of Preston, you’ll be enthralled with the variety of life depicted in the artworks. These intriguing works of art are the result of this year’s community engagement project, Bright Lights, Big City. David Godkin (Community Engagement) explains… “Bright Lights, Big City” is a visual arts community engagement project for Wangaratta Jazz & Blues 2018. Inspired by Jazz and Blues music, “Bright Lights, Big City” by Jimmy Reed (blues) and “Harlem Airshaft” by Duke Ellington (jazz). Imagine the Bright Lights that many blues and jazz musicians encounter when they come to the Big City to meet, play and learn with other musicians. That is what happens to many musicians all over the world but particularly in the USA where jazz and blues originated. Jazz musician and composer Duke Ellington was trying to convey the bustle and noise of the Big City of New York when he composed “Harlem Airshaft”. Blues musician Jimmy Reed was talking about how coming to the Bright Lights affected his girlfriend and “went to her head”.

Drawing from the imagination Imagine you are standing in the street of a Big City. There are tall buildings with many windows, all with people in them; there is music and sound coming from nearly every window and doorway, imagine the sounds. What might you see in those windows? Someone singing to the baby, as they cook? Playing a musical instrument, whistling as their cleaning the house? Humming, singing in their sleep, snoring rhythmically. A radio, iPad, stereo, television or computer could be playing music. …. A pet bird/dog/cat etc could even be singing! Whether it’s a kettle madly whistling on the stove, a special doorbell ring or a mobile phone playing music as it rings, the possibilities are endless!

our festival Volunteers The festival would not be possible without volunteers. An army of helpers, local experts and music lovers spend hours over the weekend and in the weeks leading up to it, making sure that everything runs smoothly. They welcome visitors, decorate and staff venues, drive our buses, answer questions and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our festival Board are also volunteers, working throughout the year to bring you the festival. Our huge volunteering effort is made possible with the support of the Wangaratta Motor Group and The Centre and Alpine Truss. Thanks to all the festival volunteers.

reminders to the audience To ensure that everyone enjoys the Festival, we ask you to please consider the volunteers, musicians, other patrons.

VIP seating at WPAC

Photographs

If you have a Gold Pass for concerts in the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre (WPAC) Theatre or Memorial Hall Kawai Stage you do not need to queue to ensure entry to the venue. Go to the Gold Club Room (the WPAC Conference Room) and you will be escorted into the venue 15-20 minutes prior to the advertised starting time, to ensure that everyone is seated in time for the concert.

Unless you have obtained express permission as accredited media, please do not take photographs inside the WPAC Theatre, WPAC Memorial Hall - Kawai Stage, St Patrick’s Hall and Holy Trinity Cathedral. In other venues, photographers are welcome, except in those rare cases when performers specifically request that photos not be taken. If you are photographing: Ĵ 3*&! 20&,$ 1%" ; 0%ķ 0 1%&0 , !&01/ 1 performers and audiences Ĵ ! * ,*1 20" 2!& )" 0%211"/0 */ 4&,!Ŗ*,0 !2/&,$ quiet passages in the music Ĵ !*,Ŏ1 )* ( *1%"/ - 1/*,0Œ )&," *# 0&$%1

Queues If you do not have Gold Pass or in other venues without a Gold Club remember to queue early for popular performances. Use the time to get to know your fellow patrons. Queue conversations can lead to new friendships and excellent recommendations. At all venues, we ask you to form an orderly queue, and to follow instructions of our volunteer door staff.

Venue entry/exit In the concert venues (WPAC Theatre, Memorial Hall – Kawai Stage, St Patricks Hall and Holy Trinity Cathedral) we ask you to remember that some people prefer to listen to a concert performance in its entirety, while others might prefer to hear just part of the concert. If you wish to enter or leave during the performance we ask you to wait until a suitable break between performances, and to keep noise to a minimum.

National Jazz Awards During NJA heats and the finals concert the doors will remain closed until the end of each finalist’s set of three pieces.

Clearing venues between performances In the concert venues, audiences must leave the venue while the stage is cleared and re-set, the piano is re-tuned and the musicians perform a sound check. Take your belongings with you please. We aim to have the doors open 15 minutes before the advertised starting time of a concert. Sometimes there is an unavoidable delay and when this happens we appreciate your patience. Please don't get cross at the volunteers. The situation is out of their control.

Recording We recommend listening with your ears. No audio or video recordings may be made, except with the express permission of the performers. To obtain permission, contact media@wangarattajazz. com or businessmanager@wangarattajazz.com You must have express permission; media accreditation alone is not sufficient.

Shhhhhhhh! In all venues mobile phones, pagers and watch alarms should be turned OFF. In the WPAC Theatre, WPAC Memorial Hall - Kawai Stage, St Patrick’s Hall and Holy Trinity Cathedral please do not talk during performances. At other venues, the atmosphere is more relaxed. Consider your fellow audience members and don’t make it hard for others to hear the music.

Seating Please move to the centre of the row in concert venues to help us use the full seating capacity – we don't want anybody to miss out!

Food & drink No food and drink inside are not permitted inside WPAC Theatre, WPAC Memorial Hall - Kawai Stage and Holy Trinity Cathedral. If you're planning to listen at the Pinsent, we encourage you to book for lunch or dinner to ensure a reserved seat.

Dancing Outside the concert venues, if the music makes you want to dance, go for it! At the Blues Stage, there is even a special dance area in front of the stage. Wherever you want to dance, try not to block the view of those who prefer to sit and listen.

Door staff The door staff at all venues are volunteers, making a contribution to their community’s biggest event. They appreciate your patience and any acknowledgement of the great job they do. Thank you
