CHANGING KEYS: David Lawson is ready to embrace retirement after being in the piano industry since the 1950s.
Piano man retiring on the right note BY KYLIE WILSON
F
rom humble beginnings as an apprentice at Allan’s Music in 1957, to tuning pianos for greats such as David Helfgott and Liberace, David Lawson has hit many high notes in his career. Now, on the eve of his retirement from running David Lawson’s Pianos, he is looking back on his lifelong passion for pianos and the music they make. His self-confessed “love affair with Wangaratta” began in the early 1990s when he was invited to town to tune Wangaratta’s Steinway piano. Previously living in Yea, where he operated a milk bar as well as his own piano shop, he made the move to Wangaratta with wife Lois in the mid 1990s. He first established a shop in 1995 on the corner of Appin and Taylor Streets, where Northern Rivers Academy of Music stands today, amid predictions of fail-
ure from many people. “People thought I would be broke in six months,” he said. By 1997, however, he moved to his current Ovens Street premises, which previously housed an antique store and was the town’s original dairy. “We’ve done very well here, it’s been a lovely spot.” David said that while the piano industry had not changed much during his career, modern technologies have meant that the quality and durability of pianos had actually improved. “Modern pianos should last for 100-150 years if looked after well,” he said. While there were slumps in piano sales following the advent of the television in the 1950s, and the electric keyboard in the 1970s, the timeless sound of the piano had ensured its place as the centrepiece of many a family home. “The piano hasn’t died,” David said.
“It’s a nice, natural instrument. “Every piano is different, they have their own characteristics and idiosyncracies. “They all have something about them that makes you want to keep going with them.”
A
s well as a busy career selling and maintaining pianos, David has been in constant demand for his tuning skills, often tuning pianos for concerts of a range of piano greats, including Artur Rubinstein, David Helfgott and Liberace, and has also worked for the ABC and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. “It’s a privilege to be able to do that kind of work,” he said. “It’s been a wonderful ride, and ‘Loey’ (wife Lois) has been my supporter.” David has also cherished the opportunities he has had to be active within the Wangaratta community, and has been a part of many committees and clubs, including many

years on the board at Northeast Health Wangaratta and helping to bring the Viva Italia festival to fruition. He is hopeful the continuing development occurring in Wangaratta will see the business sector benefit and thrive. “I feel very strongly that we’re going to kick goals here,” he said. “I’m feeling pretty positive about Wang. “It’s got everything we need, and most things we want.” Officially finishing with his business this Friday, handing over to new owner Mark Bolsius, David is looking forward to retirement, or as he calls it, a “permanent holiday”. As well as avidly pursuing his interest in fishing and golfing, he also has a very special project in mind – the complete rebuilding of an 1890s Steinway in the shed of his and Lois’ new home. One thing is for sure – retirement will not dim his love of pianos.
Think twice before spending outside city
T
he retail sector is of vital importance to the Rural City of Wangaratta, employing in excess of 11 per cent of the total labor force. Across the state there has been a boost of around four per cent for retail spending in recent times. This has also been true for Wangaratta, however, many of our retailers are still doing it tough and rely on your local spend to break even. With the Target Store due to open in a matter of months and some other exciting additions proposed for the CBD this figure is set to rise, and it will be interesting to look back in one year’s time and see the impact of these additions. The vision and investment from all levels of government has seen the Ovens Riverside Precinct thrive over the last couple of years. A high level of private investment has changed the CBD for the better, and brought a greater focus on the natural beauty of Wangaratta’s riverside amenity. Council is determined to leverage from the momentum of these developments, and is currently working with Business Wangaratta to advertise to our Retail Catchment, with the message “You’re Welcome in Wangaratta”. Please think twice before spending outside of your city. Wangaratta’s retailers have so much on offer, not just in goods and services, but also as a major employment sector for this community both now and into the future. Shop local.
