Circle of local support A DEEP commitment to service and the community drive Wayne and Bronwyn Ashton, who this month mark the 10th anniversary of Wangaratta X-Ray. Wayne said the key principle of their business is “to provide the best service we can with the resources we’ve got” to patients and referring professionals alike, and said he, his family and staff all have deep ties to the local community. They were initially inspired to open the business by business partner Radiologist Dr James Mullins, who was working in medical imaging in Albury at the time. The three were watching

a soccer match when James suggested they work together to open the imaging facilities in Wangaratta. The pair opened the business, with the help of original reception and administration staff member Carmel Poulter, on July 14, 2008, and the business has grown in leaps and bounds since then. “It’s been really good for us,” Wayne said of the business growth over the years. Initially, they just had x-ray and dental x-ray machines and an ultrasound machine, but they added a CT scanner and additional ultrasound facilities two years later during their first

extension work. In August 2012, they took over imaging facilities at Wangaratta Private Hospital. In the years to follow, they added mammography equipment and worked more on interventional procedures with their patients in addition to diagnostic procedures. Their most recent improvement, in July last year, was the addition of a 3D mammography system, which can often detect abnormalities that standard mammography tests cannot, and is one of the most advanced systems available in the world. Wayne said that the business

has also expanded in staff, from opening with just three people initially to being part of the six X-Ray Group sites across the Border and North East.The X-ray Group combined now employs over 60 staff. He added that he and his team have relished being able to help people from across the region and beyond, remarking that on occasions some former residents make a point of returning to Wangaratta to use their services when they are in need of health services – even from interstate.

continued from page 1 Wayne said the staff at Wangaratta X-Ray are passionate about their work and about helping people in the community, and their work has been recognised three times over the years at the Wangaratta Business Awards. “We just really enjoy what we do,� he said. But it is not all work and no play for the Ashtons and their team – the business is an active sponsor and supporter of a range of local sporting teams. They are major sponsors for the Wangaratta District Cricket Association (WDCA), and also

sponsor several football teams and previously junior netball. Wangaratta X-Ray also sponsors the Wangaratta Soccer Club. Wayne said that over the years, the business has also supported a number of fundraisers and community programs, including being a big supporter of a team this year in Albury’s Relay for Life. “We have tried to give something back to the community,� he said. “Having a family, we think Wangaratta is a fantastic place to bring them up and be part of the community. “It’s really important for us.� He praised referrers and patients alike for their longstanding and

continued support of the business, saying that the patronage of locals was a big factor in Wangaratta X-Ray’s success. He said that whether through the business or at home, he makes a point of buying goods and services from local businesses as much as possible. Wayne said he was looking forward to serving the public for years to come as the health sector continues to expand. “Wangaratta is growing,� he said, adding that Wangaratta X-Ray’s commitment to the community is also reflected in their long standing commitment to hiring locals, introducing people to the imaging industry and providing their staff

with ongoing specialised training. Many staff members are young locals who have gone away for a few years to train before returning to their home communities. “We’ve worked hard at trying to get the right group of people,� Wayne said. “If you’ve got a good staff culture, you’ve got a good business.� Wayne said Wangaratta was an ideal place to run a business and raise a family, and encouraged everyone in the community to work hard to support local businesses. “I think for businesses to survive, in Wangaratta especially, people have to make a concerted effort to shop locally in years to come.�
