LOCAL LIFE: Wangaratta mayor Dean Rees and local solicitor Owen Webb invite you to shop locally and support your local traders.

PHOTOS: Kieren Tilly

Shopping local has never been more important By BELINDA HARRISON

WITH the current COVID-19 restrictions and the difficulties in crossing the Victorian/NSW border or entering Melbourne and Mitchell Shires, it’s more important than ever that we take the opportunity to shop local and support local businesses. With almost 50 locals showcasing themselves and their businesses in our Know Your Local feature, you’re sure to ‘find yourself

a local’ for whatever you need. “Small towns and communities have so much to offer when compared to their city counterparts and Wangaratta is well-placed to thrive if we all come together during these uncertain times,” Wangaratta mayor Dean Rees said. “Shopping local and supporting local families benefits us all and ensures we can continue to offer unique and diverse products not only to others

in the area but visitors as well.” Solicitor Owen Webb of Webb Legal P/L is one local who, like many others, was born and spent a portion of his youth in the Wangaratta area, moved away to study before returning to the country air and vibrant local community. “The climate and closeness of family was certainly a factor that drew me and my wife to move here,” Owen said. “My parents have a farm here and

I attended Thoona Primary School before moving to Melbourne for high school and university. “After our son, Angus (now 16) was born, Tracy and I decided to move as we felt Wangaratta would offer us a better lifestyle and was the best place to bring up our son. “We love it here, the weather is better than Melbourne and even though the mornings are colder and foggier in winter, we seem to enjoy more sunshine during the day.” continued page 3

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 9am-5.30pm and Saturday 9am – 2pm Who’s who in your business: Owners Nathan and Tamara Bradley + 8 employees. Nathan was in the trade industry before starting at Adventure Camping and Fishing 4 years ago. He had a love for the outdoors and spent all his spare time fishing and camping. Tamara worked as a travel consultant for 6 years, more recently part time to spend time with their eldest daughter before having another baby just months before taking over the business. Describe your field of expertise: Nathan is an all rounder in the shop, but loves to focus on his fishing and hunting. Whereas Tamara focuses on the administration side of the business, but floats around all departments of the store. Did you know? From page 1 Following his return 15 years ago, Owen finished his legal qualifications and worked in Wangaratta and Wodonga before buying into Lynette Wearne’s legal practice. When Lynette retired, Owen continued to grow the business and now employs 16 staff members. “Wangaratta is our head office but we also have a branch in Melbourne where my business partners Steven Hoban and Jas Singh work. “We have a great team of local solicitors, paralegals, law clerks and support staff and each of us believes in supporting our local community for the good of everyone. While the ‘bread and butter’ for Webb Legal is conveyancing and will preparation, Owen’s area of speciality is dispute resolution concerning business to business or individual to business disputes and he has been an accredited mediator for

approximately 10 years. “Typically when I am engaged to deal with disputes it tends to be in the commercial or agribusiness sectors,” Owen added. “At Webb Legal, we believe in Wangaratta and work hard to ensure our clients receive the utmost discretion and that all matters are handled with maximum confidentiality. “It’s been easy to commit to running a business and raise a family here as the community spirit is fantastic, the sport and recreation facilities are excellent and the whole region has so much to offer.” It’s local businesses like Webb Legal who not only provide the services we need to live in the rural city but also provide work for families and opportunities for young people to stay in Wangaratta in the future. Isn’t that worth supporting by shopping locally?
