LOCAL LIFE: Fred and Diana Bienvenu, who have run Wangaratta Audiology for over 20 years, have spent several decades as dedicated members of the local community.

Bienvenus - hear for life THEY are known to many in the North East as the faces behind Wangaratta Audiology, but Fred and Diana Bienvenu have been building a life in the area and giving back to the community for several decades. Fred moved to North East Victoria 50 years ago to take up a position at the Department of Agriculture, based at Ovens, where he worked as a research scientist for over 35 years before retraining by undertaking a Masters in Clinical Audiology. “Plants don’t say thank you,” Fred explained when asked about this career move. Diana, having completed her
Masters in Audiology in the USA, came to the area when she married Fred. She worked as a diagnostic audiologist for over 20 years, based at what is now known as Northeast Health Wangaratta, and travelled throughout the region in her work with that role. When the state government ceased support for audiology at the hospital, Fred and Diana decided to take the plunge and open their own private practice, Wangaratta Audiology Services, in May 1998. They moved to their present location at 82 Docker Street in 2004, and have continually
redeveloped the property to make it the ideal quiet space needed for an audiology clinic. Fred and Diana have been a big part of the community over many years, including raising their now adult sons, Jeff and Brian, here. The two boys attended primary school in both Myrtleford and Wangaratta, and studied at Wangaratta High School before going on to university and building their respective lives in Melbourne. Fred added that over the years, several members of his family have also made their home in the area. Diana recalls that raising their family saw them involved in a
number of community groups to support their children, including childcare centre committees of management and school councils, not to mention volunteer squash club positions. Diana loves working with her hands, having been involved with quilting for over 30 years. She has been an active member of Wangaratta’s Centre Quilters Circle for about 25 years. She was part of the committee which saw the establishment of Victorian Quilters, a statewide organisation, and served as their second president.

From page 1 A few years later, Diana was the liaison between Victorian Quilters and the first Textile Festival in Wangaratta in 1999. “We’ve also been interested in family history over the years,” Fred said. Their interest is such that they wrote a self published book many years ago about the Faithfulls, one of Wangaratta’s earliest families, whom Fred is related to via his mother. Fred maintains a lifelong interest in natural history, and photographing plants is his specialty. A collection of his plant photos can be seen in the clinic waiting room. The couple also have an interest in antique hearing aids, and have amassed an impressive collection of them at their business, showcasing the evolution of technology. Wangaratta Audiology has been a local sponsor of Special Children’s Christmas Party for many years. “It’s important to be able to offer something special at Christmas time,” Diana said. They have also provided prizes of - appropriately enough - earmuffs for local shooting clubs’ events. Part of their business’ community contribution over the past few years has been participation in the Deafness Foundation’s annual Butterfly Badge fundraiser.
The pair occasionally has the opportunity to speak with various community groups in the area, talking about the importance of hearing protection, hearing in childhood or other related topics. Building a team of employees with strong ties to the local area has been a priority for the Bienvenus. Each of the audiologists has a strong long-term commitment to North East Victoria, while all the administration team members come from Wangaratta. These include fellow audiologists Sarah Patterson, Ash Wheeler and Yvonne Elford. In these days of vertical integration, it is important to Fred and Diana that the clinic continues to have no financial ties to any hearing aid company. Also, there are no commissions received or paid on hearing aid sales. The audiologists will only suggest hearing aids suitable to the client’s audiological requirements. Wangaratta Audiology continues to be open every weekday, offering friendly, helpful service to residents of Wangaratta and the wider district. All staff members are dedicated to the ideal that “everyone deserves to communicate”. Diana said she and Fred love being residents of the North East. “It’s a great place to live, and a nice place to have a business,” she said.
