THE value of Victoria’s burgeoning visitor economy has soared to $30 billion with a rise of 20.3 per cent in the High Country. In regional Victoria, spending by all visitors was up by 10.4 per cent to $11 billion, while the total number of visitors increased by 9.5 per cent to 57.1 million.

Regional Victoria’s strongest performers experienced double digit growth in spending, including Victoria’s High Country (20.3 per cent), as well as Gippsland (16.6 per cent), the Murray (14.7 per cent) and the Mornington Peninsula (14.1 per cent). Mt Buller and Mt Stirling chief executive ofďŹ cer Mark Bennetts explained the signiďŹ cance of the Victorian alpine

resorts to regional economies: “There were nearly one million visitors to the six resorts during the 2018 snow season, who spent more than $2 billion on their trips to regional Victoria and resulted in the equivalent of more than 10,000 full time jobs. “Mt Buller and Mt Stirling alone attracted 420,000 visitors last year who spent an estimated $800m within the

resorts, Merrijig, MansďŹ eld, and towns that visitors pass through on their way to and from Melbourne.â€? In Melbourne, total tourism spending grew by 10.3 per cent to reach $19 billion while total visitors grew by 13.6 per cent to reach 34.7 million. These results show the government’s Visitor Economy Strategy with a goal to increase visitor spending to $36.5 bil-

lion by 2025 – is on track. “Tourism is such a growing part of our economy here and we need to focus on it,â€? said MansďŹ eld Shire mayor Harry Westendorp. “We cannot ignore this anymore. “It is a positive thing, but it can cause a lot of problems, and not all people necessarily want the town full of tourists.

“But they are going to come, so let’s figure out how to capitalise on it and plan for the future; people are going to keep turning up and we need to make provision for it. “Agriculture may be the biggest contributor in terms of dollars, but I think tourism is going to be the big growth area for employment.” North East Tourism chief executive officer Amber Gardner said: “As of the year ending March 2019, the High Country attracted over four million visitors, which is a record high for the region. “It represents over 20 per cent

growth in total visitor numbers, which is the highest level of growth of any tourism region in the state. “Importantly, these visitors generated $1.23 billion in spend, acting as a primary contributor to the regional economy. “Over this period, TNE has delivered nearly $2 million worth of marketing for the High Country, effectively addressing the primary tourism issue faced by the region – lack of awareness. “These efforts have been instrumental in driving demand and uptake of the High Country offering, and delivering positive visitor

economy outcomes for both the region and the state. “This is particularly evidenced by where we’ve seen the most significant tourism growth – from the Victorian market - where overnight visitation has grown by an impressive 28 per cent and visitor nights by 37 per cent.” Strong intrastate spending growth (up 16 per cent) was fuelled by a sharp rise in Victorians also choosing to explore their own backyard thanks to the State Government’s Your Happy Place and Wander Victoria campaigns. According to Tourism Research

Australia, Victoria welcomed 90.6 million international and domestic visitors who spent $30 billion in the year to March 2019, growth of 11.2 per cent and 10.3 per cent respectively. The top five international countries for visitors were from China (679,900), New Zealand (345,900), USA (247,700), UK (221,700) and India (170,800). Tourism supports more than 214,000 jobs in Victoria, including 85,000 in regional areas, cementing tourism as a key driver of the state’s economy and a jobs powerhouse.

More terrain opens on Buller SKIERS and snowboarders at Mt Buller were celebrating more terrain opening up recently as the snow season hits mid-season following heavy falls. More lifts on the steep southern slopes opened on Saturday, July 27 with Southside and Bull Run chairlifts opening giving access to the popular Standard Run and enabling experienced riders to explore more of the challenging steeps on the southside of the mountain. Canyon Rope Tows also opened for the first time, linking Chamois to Standard allowing more skiers and boarders to move more freely around the resort. The snow cover on runs open is rated good by the ski patrol, and skiers and boarders were out enjoying extensive grooming on

Mt Buller saw 32,277 people up the mountain, which was a 9 per cent decrease from 35,493 in 2018. Meanwhile, Stirling saw almost half as many with 570 people, almost half as much as 2018, which saw 1032. But the total number of visitor days for the week for all resorts was 129,729 visitor days, a 4 per cent increase compared to this week in 2018.

Stunning snowboard skills on show at Mt Buller MT Buller hosted the thrilling Burton Cattleman's Rail Jam for the 14th year recently, making it the longest running snowboarding event in the country. The bustling Mt Buller Village Square was transformed into a floodlit snowboarding arena where the 15 best rail riders showed the packed crowd just what is possible on a snowboard and a 45 degree angle stair rail with enough skill and courage. The top prize was taken out by New South Welshman

Andy James who ended the night with a $4000 pay cheque nudging out the 14 other riders vying for the podium. Another event veteran Troy Sturrock took second place, applying a clinical approach to the stair set with impeccable style and consistency. One of Australia’s best up and coming snowboarders Josh Anderson rounded out the podium in third position. The coveted Best Trick award this year was presented to Beau Fisher, who sent a huge, never-been-done ma-

noeuvre, a transfer from the top closeout take off to frontside lipslide on the centre rail. Beau earned a cool $1000 and the bragging rights of adding a first-time trick to the record books of the event. New to this winter's event, the Mt Buller competition was included in the 20192020 Burton Qualifiers Series, a network of internationally recognised events supporting grass-roots snowboarding. THE Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships (VISC) will include a dedicated, inclusive Multiclass Snowsports Championships race on Wednesday, August 21, held at Burnt Hut Spur, Mount Buller. This race will provide the support necessary for people with a disability, who participate in and love snow sports, to take part with extra assistance. Through generous sponsorship, the Multiclass event also provides the athletes with a two-day Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) race preparation camp, gear hire from Black Mountain, event hoodie and a celebratory team dinner function held at the Ski Club of Victoria. This year also marks the second consecutive year

where Victorian Interschools Multiclass participants will qualify to attend the National Interschools at Mount Buller on Friday, September 6. This event has been possible due to the efforts of a small team of parents and educators, in conjunction with VISC, DWA and Special Olympics Victoria. DWA sporting activity provides the opportunity for people with a physical or intellectual impairment to demonstrate courage, while competing safely and confidently against their peers, in a race environment. Through this event, the Multiclass Sports Association endeavours to promote acceptance for all and foster understanding, respect and recognition throughout the wider alpine community.

HERE’S MOLLY: This will be the third year that Molly competes at the Victorian Interschools competitions. She placed gold in the Multiclass Division 2 Girls Alpine in 2018.

BACK AGAIN: India Biesse-Fitton has been competing since 2014 and earned a gold and two silvers in the Multiclass races. She competes currently as a Special Olympian.

The Chicks are back on Buller

CHICKS with Stix is excited to be back for another year on the Aussie slopes for the 2019 season. With over 65cm of snow falling before we even hit winter we know it’s going to be a good one. This also means there will be lots of snow for each session, where the chicks get together, have some fun, make friends, learn some new skills and push each other to go bigger, higher, better in a supportive all-female environment. They will be hitting the slopes in July, August and September. Girls are different to boys, but big mountains, mogul bumps, the half-pipe, aerial kickers and ski x burns and jumps don’t differentiate. It’s ‘one-size fits all’ and it can be daunting. Chicks aim to ease the pain and believe that in a friendly group scenario you can easily push yourself a little more. Join the Chicks on their

'shred sessions' for fun times and a supportive environment to help you improve your on-snow skills. Mount Buller Shred Session will be held on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11. Chicks with Stix is a grass-roots organisation that was founded in 2010 in Australia by a bunch of likeminded, passionate snow loving chicks. Their aim is to provide much needed encouragement and opportunities for girls who ski and snowboard. They offer them a chance to ski and board with the best female snow-sports athletes in Australia, having fun times and helping them to improve their skills in the park and freeride, slopestyle and big mountain. Chicks with Stix runs free ski and board sessions throughout the Australian Alps with Australia’s most experienced female freestyle and free ride athletes.

MICHAEL Monester has been part of the Mt Buller community since the mid ‘60s. “When at Buller, I still feel like a 30 year old Mountains do that,” Michael said. This is his story. Michael was born in Melbourne in 1953. His parents Abe and Sara went to Mt Buller with friends to see if they liked snow sports. They were inquisitive because many of their friends were European and these friends kept disappearing for three months each year, skiing at Mt Buller. Abe and Sara wanted to join them. They embraced Buller and soon after were foundation members of Patscherkofel Lodge (built 1966). They purchased all their equipment from Bruce Bretherton’s ski shop in Melbourne, also operating a dry ski school in an old cinema near his shop. The dry slope was a nylon brush floor. Skiers had to walk over a big, silver block of wax. Michael was doing linked parallel turns before he had seen snow. Paul Romania says you can still see this in Michael’s skiing style. Bruce convinced the family to take lessons every Tuesday evening, parents and kids. Skiing quickly became their family activity. And the result was that on weekends between June and October, the Monesters didn’t return to Melbourne for anything…including births, marriages, deaths or bar mitzvahs. “We may have burnt a few friends on the journey,” laughed Michael. In 1970 Abe purchased an apartment from Adam Adams in the newly constructed Twin Towers. It had 1.5 bedrooms and faced north over Shakey Knees and Mt Stirling. They were one of the first to move into the building. The following year Adams built Bee Hive and convinced Abe to upgrade to a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment for $19,000. The Monesters kept that apartment until 2010, spending 26-30 weekends on and around Mt Buller in most years. Michael’s passion for snow sports continued to grow. He was happy free-skiing the resort, sandwich in his bum bag, learning the ropes of a ski bum. He never raced but took on a volunteer job with Arlberg Ski Hire in his early teenage years to learn about skis. There he learnt to p-tex and replace the screw in edges on skis. In 1974, while at university studying law, Michael

MOUNTAIN MAN: Michael Monester is a true mountain man and joins in the fun on the slopes when celebrating good snow. joined the Mt Buller Ski Patrol. He also became an ambulance driver that encompassed lots of trips to Mansfield. In 1976 he became Ski Patrol captain and continued in the role until 1981 when he left for North America. There his passion for mountaineering flourished. He came across the Canadian Army Everest Expedition members led by Lloyd Gallagher, the main guy behind it. Michael embraced ice climbing and was based out of Fortress Mountain in Alberta, Canada. There he secured a role running Fortress Mountain’s Ski Patrol. Recognising he needed to quickly grow the patrol, he created links with the local fire department, who worked four days on and four days off and did a deal with them… free accommodation and meals in exchange for ski patrolling and had full coverage every day…everyone was a winner. Around 1982, still at Fortress, Michael started helping with other areas of the business. Namely accommodation, and F&B. He created cheap accommodation in shared facilities, that in turn ignited the F&B. During this period he also learnt to drive an LMC groomer, the North American competitor to Kassbohror and could handle the grooming of the ski slopes. It was when this occurred that Fortress offered Michael the job as day manager of the resort. Now the candle was lit at both ends.

Michael was doing 20 hour days and eventually he totally burnt out. He recognised that he needed a change and wanted to go to Blackcomb. Fortress Mountain Resorts Limited had built Blackcomb, in conjunction with Aspen Skiing Company and the British Columbia Development Bank. Hugh Smythe was the key figure so Michael called him. Hugh turned Michael down and said go back to Fortress, the opportunity wasn’t there. So he headed for South America and went climbing for the next 10 months. Michael again called Hugh re Blackcomb but was again road blocked, so Michael decided to journey to Africa and travel the continent. His desire to get to Blackcomb persisted but a groomer mate said he should consider Colorado. Silver Creek needed a skier services manager, the dominos fell and Michael was their man. He stayed at Silver Creek for several years until John McDonald offered Michael the job to replace Colin Toll as the general manager of Buller Ski Enterprises. Initially Michael said no, but after speaking with Gerry Bland, president of Aspen Ski Company, he decided to take up the opportunity to simultaneously run Mt Buller and develop Mt Stirling, which Jerry considered a once in a career opportunity to build a resort from scratch. Unfortunately by the time Michael landed back in Oz the Stirling opportunity was off the table. He bought a ticket back to the US. An unexpected hurdle was when the US embassy said he had given up his green card and so was not able to head back. Sometime later Buller Ski Enterprises sent Michael to Whistler to try and buy the resort. It was a long process and finally agreement was reached, but it had taken three months getting there. McMahons Board came over for the signing ceremony and Lorne Borgal was the CEO of Whistler. The Whistler board had finally agreed to sell. All was in motion. Doppelmayer was appointed to manufacture four lifts. However, at the final moment the entire deal collapsed for reasons Michael has decided not to share. Michael stayed as general manager of Buller Ski Enterprises until 1991. One of his achievements was a focus on guest services and in his first year recruited Cathy Burnhardt from Colorado to tweak his presentations. After finishing he became CEO of Aust Ski Areas Association and then commenced a career in resort consultancy contracting to resorts in countries right around the globe including NZ, USA, Spain, China, Canada and Morocco. After his time with McMahon Holdings, Michael met Rino Grollo and let him know there was potentially the opportunity to buy the lift company. History shows that Rino took that opportunity. Michael did return to do a snow making audit of tenders for Buller Ski Lifts. Through a series of meetings, Michael was invited to work more closely with the Grollo Group and started working with them in 2002. He also joined a number of boards. Part of his role involves liaising with government. His passion for Buller is well known and when the opportunity arose to join the Mt Buller Resort Management Board he had come a full circle from his earlier membership of the Mt Buller Committee of Management. That was two years ago. Michael has a strong belief that the lift company, the RMB and the independent operators must work collaboratively, focusing on strategy that delivers positive outcomes for all stakeholders, but most importantly the resort guests. Over the past two years Michael has worked hard with Martin Ansell to assist in the delivery of the Whitehorse Village development adjacent to Bourke St and also the new Kooroora Hotel and apartment project which is 50 per cent completed. He has two boys, Josh and JJ, and is regularly seen making turns on the upper mountain with his partner Pauline. But between June and September, don’t invite him to a celebration of either a birth, death, marriage or bar mitzvah…he probably won’t come.

Harro evokes memories in photographs LEGENDARY local photographer Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington brings his distinctive photographic sense to his annual winter exhibition, “Evocation”. Each year Tony offers unique perspectives and creates inspiring pieces that are quickly becoming sought-after artworks and prized for their alpine and ocean themes. This year’s collection takes an exciting and artistic departure reflecting Tony’s last summer spent on the North Shore of Oahu. Tony explains, “I have titled this exhibition Evocation, which is defined as ‘the act of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory, or image to the conscious mind’. “These images capture personal memories of a place and time and the associated emotions those recollections have for me. “I like to think that connection will be something others can experience when they spend time viewing the images.” A dreamy photographic collection, the photos show a creative new shift in style for Harrington as he explores the sentiments and memories conjured up by his ‘special places’ in the ocean and the mountains, here on Mt Buller and abroad. Harro is well-known for his gypsy lifestyle chasing seasons and spending half the year

away from Australia, usually chasing storms, waves, snow and moments by the water. These images are a homage to these beautiful places and also to the emotional and spiritual connection they have for Harrington. Harrington explores themes of escape and release, memory and nostalgia and the connection he feels to the energy that comes from these wild and untamed places. There are a number of distinct series in the exhibition that are set to fascinate and engage people on many levels. From the “Historia Collection” including the old Blue Bullet chairlift and now de-

molished Kooroora building in the village square, through to dramatic aerial captures of the resort in black and white and dreamy pastels of colour of the world’s oceans using a unique “painting” process Harro has devised using a special process of camera and lens, this exhibition certainly ventures into artistic terrain not always seen in contemporary photography. The exhibition opens on August 7 (today) at Mt Buller’s Alpine Central and will continue through to September. Harro’s work can be seen at www.harroart.com and in many alpine and beach homes as his limited edition works are collected by enthusiasts.

NOT FORGOTTEN: the old Blue Bullet chairlift station – evoking more memories.

Search for missing man POLICE pulled out all stops last week searching for a man who was reported missing and believed to be on Mt Buller. Calling for public assistance to help locate missing Sandhurst man Conrad Whitlock, police inspector David Ryan of Benalla said Mr Whitlock’s car had been located parked on the side of Mt Buller Road at Unnamed Corner – about 7km from the top. The 72-year-old was last seen about 11.30pm Monday (July 29) at his home address in White Water Court. It was believed that Mr Whitlock’s car, a white BMW, arrived in the area about 6am Tuesday. Police and family members held concerns for Mr Whitlock’s welfare due to his age and the fact that it would be unusual for him to be at the ski fields. At a media conference last Wednesday, Inspector Ryan said Mr Whitlock’s disappearance was out of character. He said he went to bed Monday night but was

gone when his wife awoke on Tuesday morning. He said there was no description of what Mr Whitlock was wearing. Insp Ryan called for anyone who may have picked up the man on the mountain and took him to either the top or down to Mansfield to please contact police. On Thursday, when still not found, police again called for any motorist who may have dashcam footage picking up Mr Whitlock walking on the road. The search continued in foggy, damp and cold conditions with police search and rescue, K9 squad, helicopter, SES members and volunteers. Insp Ryan said there was no reason why the vehicle had stopped where it was on Unnamed Corner, as it still had fuel. Mr Whitlock’s keys and wallet were still in the car. “We located his car by using tracking coordination on his mobile phone which was also left in the car, Insp Ryan said.

NEW LODGINGS: Experienced ski lodge managers John and Tracy Belchamber have taken on their own lodge – in the ski fields of Japan – Kamishiro Mountain Lodge.

The Belchambers have taken on their own lodge

AFTER calling Mt Buller home for nearly 30 years John and Tracy Belchamber, along with their two daughters Darcy and Ryley, are writing a new chapter in their adventurous life. Previous managers at VSL for four years before taking over the Avenue Ski Club for 13 years have given them both a wealth of experience to understand what it takes to make your Japanese holiday memorable. Some may remember John, or JB as he was most often referred to, from Mt Buller ski school where he worked as an instructor for 25 years. In the early days Tracy managed Alpine rentals Cow Camp and Kooroora before their daughters were born and then in the later years joined the team at Mt Buller medical centre as one of the receptionists. Both girls attended Mt Buller Primary School for their winter education and when it was time for Darcy to start secondary school they decided to stay put in Adelaide and give up their Buller life. After a ski trip to Japan they all realised how much they missed the snow life. A quick trip back over to find a property followed by another five weeks to get the place ready for the 2019 ski season provided a challenge but a huge sense of achieve-

ment for finally having their own place was well worth it. After looking at several properties they realised they found the right one the minute they entered Kamishiro Mountain Lodge. Lovingly maintained by the previous owners Tomita san and his wife the lodge also features a beautiful log cabin that sits at the front of the lodge that Tomita san built as well as a tennis court. The lodge has a little bit of Olympic history with the Finnish ski team staying there in the 1998 Winter Olympics. Kamishiro Mountain Lodge sits at the base of Goryu which links at the top to Hakuba 47 so a huge variety of terrain is on offer. The Hakuba valley consists of 10 ski areas with Happo-one, Cortina and Goryu being the big three. At the moment until the girls finish school they will spend the Northern Hemisphere winters in Japan and are looking to operate for part of the green season. They look forward to welcoming you to their lodge, to experience the wonderful snowfields, rural Japanese culture and local food. They’re sure you will enjoy Japan as much as they do.

ROUND THE GATE: Competing in the Greg Munn Memorial Cup Susie Wellbourne nicely rounds the gate on the slalom run.

THROUGHOUT the ski season Ski Club Victoria (SCV) hold weekly races for members. On Saturday, July 27 Little Buller Spur was the venue for the club’s race – the Greg Munn Memorial Cup. The first Greg Munn Cup was run in 1990 and this year was sponsored by All Saints estate. The cup was proposed by Tony Buzzard after the passing of Greg Munn at a very young age, just 46. Greg was an avid skier who had enjoyed skiing at Mt Buller for as long as his family can remember and was a long time SCV member.

HERE WE GO: Julian Sallabank approaches the first gate hoping to round it neatly.

YOUNG ONES: Having a great time were (from left) Rhys Wright-Turner, Keith Malove, Boris Thompson, Olivia Douglas and Tabitha Laurence.

“WE smashed our target and raised $4000 in total,” exclaimed Jenny Gumela of Alpine Retreat on the end result of the Big Freeze night recently. Alpine Retreat hosted the night which saw ex-footballers David Neitz and Russell Robertson get ‘iced’ all in the name of raising dollars for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Jenny said there were about 120 people attending the night, all taking part in raffles, silent auctions and a handballing competition. “We just had to hit the target of $500 to get the boys ‘iced’ – having ice water poured over them on the snow – and ‘we smashed it’.” Jenny said the night was such a success they were already planning a repeat event next year. “And we must say a big thank you to Brew Manity who donated to MND and enabled us to sell their products at a discounted price on the night,” she said.

THIS WAY: David Neitz and Russell Robertson conducted the handball competition with the prize to the best being an autographed Sherrin football.

Duck Inn for delightful dinners CUISINE from around the world is to be enjoyed at Duck Inn’s restaurant. “The menu has come about from different chefs bringing their own style to the restaurant and has evolved over the past few years, said owner Aleks Stanish. “But of course we have to have duck on the menu – after all it is the Duck Inn. Aleks and his wife Karen totally rebuilt the Duck Inn in 2013 bringing with them a new, modern and uncluttered style of accommodation. The restaurant, named Drakes, can be quite intimate seating 50 patrons only in a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere. “The purpose built hotel and restaurant has been excellent and is doing what it should be doing, Aleks said. Head chef again this season is Queenslander Nick Stewart, a self-confessed snowboarder who combines his culinary skills and work time with ‘play’ time – boarding in the mornings and working in the afternoons and evenings. The Duck Inn is open for dinner every evening except Tuesday night and offers a unique selection of matching wines to suit the main course and sweet dishes on this eclectic menu. “Our Pindare Tempranillo Sangiovese Shiraz is between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon and goes perfectly with the duck dishes, Aleks said. “The lightness of the Tempranillo San-

DROP BY: The Merrijig High Country Hotel and Motor Inn has launched its new Gin & Whiskey Bar – with tastings available every day.

Change of name but familyfriendly service the same On Wednesday nights they offer parmas with topping and on Friday nights their special ‘wood fired’ pizzas. But the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day from 7am to late on weekends and 7,30am to late weekdays during winter. And the motor inn also caters to the locals for that last minute supply of milk and papers. And talking of winter – well that season is just around the corner, so Mandy and Michael, along with the rest of their family, Ben and Bella and Alex are gearing up for what is expected to be a busy snow season. “We are a family owned and operated business and we know what the public want and we give the best service we can,” Mandy said. “We are well and truly prepared for the winter with ski and chain hire ready for the snow.” The Merrijig High Country Hotel and Motor Inn is found at 1915 Mt Buller Road, Merrijig – right in the heart of the little township. For bookings call 5777 5702 or go to www. merrijigmotorinn.com.au.

A CHANGE of name and a first time Gin & Whiskey Bar is all happening at the Merrijig Motor Inn. The popular venue at the gateway to the snow fields will now be known as the Merrijig High Country Hotel and Motor Inn – yes, a mouthful but one that describes the family venue perfectly. And, as a first in the Mansfield district, operators Mandy and Michael Aistrope have developed and opened a brand new ‘Gin & Whiskey Bar’. “We have more than 80 varieties of gin so far and adding to it all the time along with 40 varieties of whiskeys,” Mandy said. “We are promoting the different types and styles of gins and whiskies from across Australia and around the world.” Added to the experience of ‘tasting’ the liquors, a sharing platter is also offered – a delightful selection of nibbles. The motor inn has had a long reputation for great hospitality and Mandy and Michael are continuing that family friendly service with special nights at the restaurant.

Enzian's Chamois Restaurant is regarded as a "must visit" on Mt Buller, combining great dining with friendly attentive staff.

HAPPY 50TH: Cam Walls is currently

MOGUL ON: Amelia Brackin from Melbourne Grammar School - Grimwade House competing in the 2018 Interschools competition.

Mogul Ski World Victorian Interschools on soon MT BULLER will again host the Mogul Ski World Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships, from August 19 to August 25. The interschools were ďŹ rst staged in 1958 at Mt Buller where the ďŹ rst schools competing were Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College. In 2019 this will be the 62nd year that the Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships are to be conducted at Mt Buller.

Since the early days of 1958 the Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships (or Interschools) have grown to become one of the premier school sporting competitions in Victoria. More than 180 schools compete annually in the event held at Mt Buller. In recent years there have been just under 6000 entries in the event across nine disciplines. It is a far cry from the ďŹ rst Interschools which consisted

working with TravelSafe as a driver on Buller but has worked his way almost all around the world. Loving the atmosphere and fun of Mt Buller this season – his first as a taxi driver – Cam recently celebrated his 50th birthday with family and friends. Among his celebrations, over a few days, was a dinner at the Delatite Hotel (Mansfield) where a special dessert was laid before him – candle and all. Happy birthday Cam.

Join the FreeBOM fun

of four boys from Melbourne Grammar School and four boys from Scotch College competing in an Alpine Giant Slalom event. Today competitors have the choice of Alpine Giant Slalom, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Ski Cross, Moguls, Cross Country Classical, Cross Country Freestyle Relay, Slopestyle Ski and Slopestyle Snowboard. Spectators are invited to come along and cheer on their favourite school competitors.

FREEBOM 2019 will take place at Mt Buller’s Wood Run on August 17. This is the chance to free your animal spirit. The 6th annual FreeBOM is where Mt Buller’s ski community get together on Wood Run to ski moguls, dance to music and aprèski. Possibly the most fun you will ever have on skis. Everyone is welcome to watch and everyone is encouraged to enter. This is your chance to get a cheer from the lift, a high-ďŹ ve at the bottom of the run and a shout-out from an MC in a one-piece suit. It’s not about how well you ski it’s about how well you want to ski.

This is theatre, this is action, this is the way skiing was meant to be before espresso coffee made it just another Saturday. The competition is much like a big mountain event but instead of being held on the side of a steep rocky peak the event is located on Mt Buller’s infamous Wood Run – birthplace of Aussie bump skiing and an achievable challenge for intermediate skiers and a blast for experts. Skiers will be judged on their skiing uidity, energy, line choice and control. The format is relaxed and the judges are as much a part of the entertainment as they are looking at the skiing. Prizes will be awarded to all ages and genders based on skiing, dressing, airing, falling and FreeBOMing.
