MT BULLER and Mt Stirling have the welcome mat out and are looking forward to a big 2014 snow season. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management chief executive officer John Huber said that during a busy summer of events, the board and employees have been working hard to complete some great new improvements to the resorts both on and off the slopes. Visitors can now check up to date conditions at Mt Stirling with the added convenience of two brand new live webcams. “On Mt Buller, we’ve undertaken some largescale projects including the complete renovation of the former Cow Camp Plaza, now known as the Village Square Plaza,” Mr Huber said. “This important facility has undergone a major renovation and refurbishment including the addition of a mezzanine level almost doubling the seating and dining capacity. “The Plaza now enjoys a new aspect and entrance from the Village Square, all new interior and furnishings, a cosy fireplace and even a lift to the mezzanine
for accessibility.” Mr Huber said visitors will be sure to enjoy the fresh new look and feel, and encourages everyone to stop by and have a look. “It really adds class and comfort to the heart of the resort,” Mr Huber said. In the ski fields, resort management and Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) continued to invest in snowmaking infrastructure with the completion of the automation of the snowmaking system on the northern side of Bourke Street, following the purchase of six new fully automatic snowmaking guns. “This improvement will see eight times more snow produced than the machines that were in place previously,” Mr Huber said. BSL made improvements to the lifting infrastructure over the summer, including the installation of a mid-load on the Tirol T-Bar improving skier and snowboarder access from the north side down to the Village. December 2013 saw the launch of the Mt Buller Sculpture Park Walk, a diverse collection of sculptural pieces dotted around the resort. Continued page 2

CELEBRATING its 90th anniversary at Showtime Events Centre, South Wharf on May 9, a sell-out crowd of Ski Club of Victoria members and friends had a ball. A red carpet entry led some 200 party goers through a gentle snowfall into a glittering winter wonderland. Dancing, singing and nonstop ‘catching up’ were interspersed with reminiscences from the club’s oldest and longest serving members, architect Peter McIntyre, SCV archivist Richard Brearley and Mt Buller legend Hans Grimus with his wife Lotte. Spot sponsor prizes including Patterson Cheney’s Mercedes Benz for a weekend, a Lavazza coffee machine, Durrance body cream and Bumps ski straps, kept guests hopping. Fierce bidding took place for the ultimate auction item supplied by Grollo Leisure Group - a Kassbohrer sunset ride followed by dinner at Tyrol for 12 people.

Free entry to Buller this weekend
MANSFIELD Shire residents wanting to attend opening winter season celebrations on Mt Buller this weekend have gained a bonus again this year. Resort management board has announced that free entry and parking will be given to all residents who can prove they live within the shire - by producing a driver’s licence or similar. The offer only relates to June 7, 8 and 9 - Queen’s Birthday weekend.
“Join us on June 7 to 9 when we celebrate the official opening of the snow season,” said ARMB chief executive officer John Huber. “There’ll be plenty of live music, kids’ entertainment, free hot chocolate and glühwein, plus fireworks when the sun goes down.” Mr Huber said last week that this is one way that Mt Buller can repay the loyalty offered by local residents and supporters.

WHO gives you a real ski deal that’s worth writing about? Mt Buller does. Late last season, Buller Ski Lifts offered one of the hottest deals of all time. The ‘Deal’ stated that if I bought my season pass before November 30, 2013, not only would I receive (Snow dough) Buller dollars, but…I was also entitled to a free five day lift pass to ski Les Trois Vallees in France. Unbelievable (I read the fine print twice just to make sure). Planning a trip overseas already for during our summer break, and always on the lookout for a bargain, I paid my money and booked my ticket to include France. The Three Valleys (promoted as the world’s largest ski area) takes in resorts of Courcheval, Meribel, Val Thorens, Les Menuires and St Martin de Belleville. The Alpe Hotel at St Martin de Belleville provided the perfect ‘chocolate box’ accommodation including
breakfast and dinner, and a chairlift 20 metres from the door. On arrival at the ticket office, my unpractised enquiry in French received a puzzled look, but the girl at the next counter jumped in with perfect English and said, “yes, Mt Buller Australia, give her a five day lift pass”. Wow - four unbelievable ski areas, 140 fast, enclosed lifts and gondolas whisking you to an amazing variety of terrain which even includes five glaciers. Magnificent views across the top of the world to Mont Blanc, spring sunshine, two plus metres of snow (despite it being late in their season) and the opportunity to experience one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan resorts, what more can you ask for? I skied as fast as I could for seven hours a day and still saw only a fraction of this truly remarkable resort – guess I’ll just have to go back to France again in 2015. Watch the Mt Buller website for details of next year’s pre-season international lift deals.
A BREATH of fresh air has made its way from the Italian Alps to Mt Buller’s Alpine Retreat. As the 2014 snow season opens so has the mountain’s newest restaurant ‘Desiderio Italiano’. The very desire to promote authentic Italian delicacies is what has motivated Giovanni ‘Vanni’ Cologni to bring his experience, skills and passion to new altitudes. Vanni hails from Lombardy, an Italian skier’s paradise scattered with resorts such as Bormio, Livigno and Valchiavenna, but also world-
renowned for Italian fashion capital Milan, Lake Como’s Bellagio and San Pellegrino mineral water springs. Desiderio Italiano caters for a variety of palates: classics aficionados will not be disappointed by the variety of authentic pasta, pizza and meat dishes while more adventurous epicureans will be able to savor lesser-known regional staples of the Italian Alps and Apennines. Vanni’s love for cooking began in childhood, when he would experiment in the kitchen while his parents were at work.
After migrating to Australia in 2003 with his family, Vanni’s experience as a chef expanded to include work along the Great Ocean Road and Melbourne. His knowledge of traditional northern Italian cuisine has been further enriched by his travels to the Dolomites in more recent years, a region with an alpine culinary history spanning centuries. Desiderio Italiano features an ever-changing menu starring fresh, seasonal ingredients, partnered with a wine-list showcasing a fine balance of both affordable and more ex-
clusive Italian labels. Open for breakfast and dinner, Desiderio Italiano is a must-try experience for any visitor to Mt Buller and will not disappoint. Come to say ciao to our friendly staff and allow us to look after you. Our flexible chef loves a challenge and is happy to accommodate for those with special dietary needs; do not hesitate to let our staff know about any of your specific requirements and Vanni and his team will come up with something that will surely please your tastebuds.

Alpine history is alive and well By LIZ WEBB THE National Alpine Museum of Australia (NAMA), located on level 1 Alpine Central Mt Buller, is a treasure trove of Australia’s earliest alpine history. Visitors of all ages can see the earliest skis, toboggans and snowboards; Winter Olympic memorabilia, the very ďŹ rst snowďŹ elds fashion; books, posters and you can even sit and watch old movies of the pioneers who discovered and built Australia’s resorts. On Saturday, May 17, history was made when the NAMA Committee together with members of Thredbo and Perisher Historical Societies, Mt Hotham, the International Ski Heritage Association, Northern and Southern Tasmanian Ski Associations and
several interested individuals met together at Mt Buller Alpine Central. The meeting was held to understand exactly what each organisation does and to discuss the formation of a national body which will be mutually beneďŹ cial to all alpine organisations. The main objectives of the new organisation are to raise the public proďŹ le of the history of Australia’s snow sports heritage, coordinate collections, share experiences and lobby for funding. The importance of preserving Australia’s relatively short alpine history, creating interest and awareness in the variety of activities associated with alpine regions, and the need to encourage future generations to visit, know and love the alpine areas, was important to all.
CONFERENCE: Delegates from across the Alpine region attended the recent Australian Alpine National Museums conference at Mt Buller. PHOTO: Courtesy Steve Thompson
All delegates were treated to a guided tour of the National Alpine Museum. The group was impressed with the NAMA collection and discussions took place
about individual organisations identifying gaps in their collections with the possibility of loans and information sharing taking place, so that a complete picture of the overall
history of Australia’s alpine regions can be preserved and documented. The day delivered some gems. Marvellous and little
known stories were told of the old days and colorful pioneers. Internationally Australia’s resorts are represented by Andrew Ramsey and David Sisson who is compiling information on every ski lift constructed in Australia. Mt Donna Buang was once skied by Walter Kiessling and others and Mt Hotham’s effervescent representative, Andrew Swift, enthralled everyone with his enthusiastic report on creating meaningful and stimulating, summer heritage walks at Mt Hotham. The joint meeting chairs, Michael Monester from Mt Buller and Alan Fredericks representing Thredbo, were delighted with the positive meeting outcomes and the obvious enthusiasm that is sure to keep the history of the alpine areas alive and relevant to all Australians.

MT BULLER has welcomed the arrival of six new fully automatic SMI Puma snowmaking guns ahead of the 2014 winter season. The arrival of these new guns, which will produce eight times more snow than the previous models they have replaced, completes the automation of the mountain’s snowmaking infrastructure on the northern side of Bourke Street. The ďŹ ve replaced snowmaking guns have been relocated to the Baldy and Koer’s areas, signiďŹ cantly improving the snowmaking capabilities on these parts of the mountain. Thanks to signiďŹ cant and on-going investment over the past few years, Mt Buller now boasts an extensive world class snowmaking system of 219 snowmaking machines across the resort, including 141 automatic guns.

Cow Camp gets new home and is bigger
By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY
FORMERLY known as Cow Camp, the new Village Square Plaza has almost doubled in size and is more visitor friendly than it ever was. The ‘Plaza’ has been extended to incorporate the previous verandah spaces surrounding the building, a new central entrance off the northern side of the building makes for better access and a new staircase with top landing makes for easier entrance to both Pat’s Italian Restaurant and The Pancake Parlour and downstairs a new entrance to the ski hire has also been formed. In the past week the visitor lounge area has been refurbished and teller machines etc moved back in. The Plaza still provides the comfort station for visitors and on the outside the bus company will continue to operate from its usual depot. Mt Buller Resort Management Board marketing manager, Amber Gardiner, said it was time the building had an overhaul and the new refurbished centre would give visitors a much better experience and welcome to the mountain. “It has increased in size considerably and is warm and friendly to come into now without the awkward corner entrance - and it’s all about giving visitors to the mountain a great experience. The Village Square Plaza will be officially opened by resort chief executive officer, John Huber, at around 4.30pm on Saturday.

BACK ON BULLER: Transition Snowboard Camps (TSC) will celebrate its 10th year on Mt Buller this season - coaching some up and coming young boarders. TOP COACH: Jarrod Wouters (left) of Transition Snowbaord Camps (TSC) with Andrew Logan of Ski and Snowboard Australia at the recent awards night in Melbourne.
TRANSITION Snowboarding Camps’ (TSC) Jarrod Wouters has taken out a prestigious award through Ski and Snowboarding Australia (SSA). At a gala dinner at Sumac Central Pier, Docklands Melbourne in April, Jarrod received the award for top development coach in Australia. He graced the podium with Australia’s elite skiers and snowboarders including Olympians Brittney Cox, snowboarder Torah Bright and aerials skier David Morris, Scotty James and Greta Small. Jarrod has been coaching the Australian world cup snowboarding athletes for the past ďŹ ve years. He has also been instrumental in developing some of the young snowboarders including those that did well at the junior snowboarding championships. This season will mark the 10th anniversary of TSC on Mt Buller where Jarrod, and wife Christine, work with the MansďŹ eld Secondary College Annexe on its snowboarding program.
Snow at Mt Buller ahead of the 2014 snow season
THE first snow for 2014 fell at Mt Buller on the last day of April, less than six weeks ahead of the ofďŹ cial start of the snow season. Residents and staff at the resort awoke to a beautiful winter wonderland with more than 3cm of fresh uffy snow and temperatures below zero. Mt Buller is looking forward to what is set to be another busy snow season in 2014 with the ďŹ nishing touches being placed on a range of upgrades to ensure Mt Buller remains Victoria’s premier alpine resort.
New for the 2014 winter season are improvements to Victoria’s largest lift infrastructure with the addition of a new mid load of the Tirol T-Bar, the completion of the automation of snowmaking infrastructure on the northern side of Bourke Street, as well as refurbishment and facelift to the public day facility formerly known as Cow Camp Plaza. Director of marketing, sales and business development for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Amber Gardner, was thrilled at the sight of the ďŹ rst snow fall.
“We have already received around 3cm of fresh snow and the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting further falls on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, she said at the time “We’re looking forward to what we hope will be a fantastic snow season, and are all doing some serious snow dancing as the white stuff falls from the sky. “We’ve had a busy summer of events and activities and have been focusing on everything winter since the end of the mountain bike season on April 27.

Christine said in the 10 years they have been running the most progressive, professional and rewarding snowboarding training programs and camps in Australia. Mt Buller has been the base of Transition Snowboarding for those 10 years. “It was where we ďŹ rst coached riders like Scotty James, Declan Vogel-Paul and Lauren Staveley in their ďŹ rst few seasons on a snowboard,â€? Jarrod said. “We started the ďŹ rst Transition program in 2004, with the camp house in Merrijig, at Buller’s base. “Mt Buller has a superb variety of terrain for our snowboarders to ride, with everything from easy green slopes and long blue cruisers to steep double black chutes. “It has been home to the Victorian Interschools for more than 55 years and continues to be an epicentre for development snowboarding in Australia. “TSC’s Mt Buller school holiday and part time camps are the breeding ground for future coaches and athletes, and nothing beats a week trip to the resort.â€?

THEY’RE OFF: Mountain bikers set off in a heat of bike events on Mt Buller. PHOTOS: Andrew Railton
STOKED PUMP: Local mountain bike rider Flynn Bowker was stoked to have the Pump Track at Mt Buller.
A sensational summer at Mt Buller MT Buller has enjoyed a fantastic summer season, with thousands of visitors enjoying a range of pursuits including mountain biking, hiking, trail running and sightseeing, as well as enjoying the sensational calendar of events offered all summer long. Cross country and downhill mountain bikers enjoyed Mt Buller’s world-class network of trails and complementary services and facilities, including bike shuttles, retail and hire outlets, cycle-friendly accommodation and more. Arguably the most exciting addition to the resort this summer was the brand new modular pump track that arrived in January, much to the delight of riders
of all ages and abilities. The track, positioned in the heart of the Village next to the Blue Bullet Chairlift, is made up of 88 interchangeable parts, with 102 linear metres of rideable surface. It is designed to allow mountain bikers to ride the course continuously without pedalling, by using weight shifts (pumping) and gravity to drive momentum. The pump track was also the site of two ‘pump track pursuit’ events, as well as being enjoyed by guests as young as three years old on bikes, trikes, skateboards and scooters. The resort again hosted a great range of events for all ages and interests which saw
Rudy and Suzanne have had four fantastic years’ operating the HooHah Kitchen. Lots of fun, laughter, tears and stress, but most of all a great ride. We could not have done it without our amazing, diligent staff, some have become lifelong friends, some we would like to forget, but all had a part to play in the ever busy, ever crazy HooHah. Thank you to all the mountain staff, MMBL. BSL, RMB, the so many Lodges, Hotels and shops for the fantastic support of the HooHah. And of course the thousands of skiers who have come through our doors. Everyone who has stood at our counter and ordered from us. We have nothing but thanks and gratitude to Anton and Richard for giving us this opportunity to be a part of Kooroora. We have all been associated with Mt Buller since the 70’s its been our home, our life and our love. THANK YOU, SUZANNE & RUDY
weekends buzzing with guests enjoying all the resort has to offer. Events included the Mountain High Fun Run and kids’ activities at Easter, the ‘Radical Reels’ outdoor film festival, several trail running events, the resort’s signature Bike Buller MTB Festival plus a number of other mountain biking events, clinics, camps and more. Following the 2014 snow season, Mt Buller will be gearing up to an even bigger summer in 2014-15, with the launch of the Mt Buller Mt Stirling EPIC Mountain Bike Trail, which has been constructed over recent months and will be ready to ride for the opening of the mountain bike season on December 6.
Designed and constructed by mountain bike trail guru Glen Jacobs and his team at World Trail, the 40km trail will offer visitors to the region a long distance, cross country descending ride on terrain within the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resorts, Mansfield State Forest and the Mt Russell Education Area. The trail is currently under assessment by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) for its EPIC mountain bike trail program, which awards ‘EPIC’ status to trails that offer an iconic, diverse and high-quality backcountry ride experience. If EPIC status is attained, the trail will be one of the few trails outside of North America to
receive this endorsement. Chief executive officer for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, John Huber, said the trail will be a drawcard for the region. “The EPIC Mountain Bike Trail project will present another quality cycle tourism product for the High Country, showcasing the stunning landscape and providing a unique backcountry mountain bike experience unlike anything else in Australia,” he said. “The team from World Trail, in conjunction with our resort management trail crew, has worked incredibly hard over summer to construct the trail in readiness for its official launch this coming December.
“Despite the trail experiencing some significant vandalism towards the end of the construction period, reparation works have already begun and final finessing of the trail will take place prior to its opening on December 6, after the winter season has given the trail the time it needs to settle into the surrounding environment. “We’re very much looking forward to opening this trail to the public and inviting visitors to enjoy this spectacular part of North East Victoria.” For further information on Mt Buller’s summer offering, visit mtbuller.com.au, as well as the dedicated mountain biking website at bike.mtbuller. com.au.

Easter full of action on Mt Buller
COLLECTING: These four young ladies, Ella Crawford, Holly Nish, Alice Dunlop and Chloe Dillon, had fun gathering Easter eggs on Mt Buller as part of the giant Easter Egg Hunt supplied by Cadburys. PHOTOS: Andrew Railton
MT BULLER hosted the biggest Easter to date with a record number of visitors in the resort over the long weekend in April. Families enjoyed Mt Buller’s new Sculpture Park Walk, the Bike Buller Pump Track, kids’ club and much more. Added to the festivities, visitors enjoyed spectacular weather with sunshine all weekend. Easter Saturday saw the annual Mountain High Fun Run where runners of all ages and abilities took part and raised much needed funds for the Mansfield District Hospital. Craig Appleby and Victoria Mitchell were the first male and female to complete the ‘Buller Breaker’, a gruelling
9km course that took in the Summit climb. The not-so serious participants, including kids and mums with prams, enjoyed the leisurely 3km Village Views course. Downhill mountain bikers and sightseers made the most of the last weekend of chairlift operations before winter and traditional Easter services were held in the beautiful Mt Buller Chapel. Easter Sunday was the highlight of the weekend with the Giant Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt. With a guest appearance from the Easter Bunny and kilos of chocolate, the Village Square was buzzing with excitement.

OVER the years, Craig and Barb Jones have prided themselves that Stirling Experience has one of the best cross country ski schools in the Australian Alps. Wishing to continue this tradition of bringing the best instructors to the mountain and continuing the resort’s association with the graduates from the University of Tartu [Estonia] Sports Academy and the Otepaa Ski Institute, Craig and Barbara visited Estonia in January to catch up with former staff and find new instructors for 2014. Temperatures of minus 20 degrees did not dampen their enthusiasm and they explored many regions, including an Ice Island, Kihnu and exploring the Kohlta underground mine with Kristen Tattar and Janek Valliman [2011 and 2012 seasons]. They are now the proud parents of a beautiful baby daughter, Isabelle. Craig enjoyed skiing on the frozen lakes and beautifully prepared cross country trails. As with past seasons, four Estonian instructors will again join the Mt Stirling Ski School for this season.
Ave and Joosep on their fi rst trip down under, Siim Elio returning from last season and Varhur Teppan from 2012. Siim has spent the year working and exploring the east coast of Australia. When we last heard from him he was picking bananas near Cairns and intends to drive back via Alice Springs. Vahur Teppan, known locally, as V-Man will be flying back once again. Vahur has launched his own ski coaching business in Estonia. His work van, filled with skis and tuning equipment and sign written with a large VR (Vahur Rocks) travels the country following the race calendar and running student cross country ski programs in many schools throughout the winter. After resort skiing in Austria and cross country skiing in Estonia, the one thing that really impressed Barb and Craig was the manner in which European resorts embraced all forms of on-snow activities. It was wonderful to see people of all ages and abilities enjoying being in the snow, walking, sledding, snow shoeing as well as skiing.
European resorts equally cater for everyone, encouraging visitors to enjoy the mountain environment. Walking, snow shoeing and sledding/tobogganing t r a i l s w e ave s e a m l e s s l y through the landscape adjacent to the ski trails, visitors are not corralled into separate little sections as we so often do in Australia. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the mountain and it is our desire that we achieve the same welcoming spirit and that this should be the way forward for Mt Stirling. As part of this aim we will again run our Ski School, Sunday Experience program. This is an opportunity to enjoy a day of ski touring in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, led by one of our qualified instructors. The ski school will also offer snow shoe tours of different length and duration catering for those of varying fitness levels each weekend. Vahur has experienced the vagaries of Australian snowfalls and has presented us with some special Estonian Magic Snow - just add water. Craig and Barb invite all to ‘come on up to Mt Stirling and see if it has worked’.

Marshall to drive MMBL By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY MT Buller staff using the MansďŹ eld Mt Buller Bus Lines (MMBL) services to get to and from work each day will be the big winners this year with a new negotiated fare. Steve Marshall took over the reins of the job in April giving him time to organise drivers and staff for this coming season. He ďŹ rst started working for the bus lines back in 1986 driving taxis,

then went on to the shuttle buses for some 15 to 18 years before moving indoors and assisting in the ofďŹ ce for the past seven years. Coming into the manager’s chair after working with the company for 27 seasons, Steve Marshall said last week the variable prices according to distance travelled has now gone to one fare across the board for mountain staff. “Everything else will be pretty much the same as in previous years,â€? he said.

“I must say a big thanks to John (Hopper) Christopher who has sat in the head chair for many years, Steve said. A farewell dinner was held for Hopper by the Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce in May with many thanks from mountain operators being expressed. MMBL will still run the free shuttle service from Horse Hill car park to the village for day visitors this season. Also free will be the village
shuttle service and of course the (paying) taxi service for longerstay visitors and after hours village services. The regular buses from MansďŹ eld to the mountain will operate as usual and the bus service from Melbourne to mountain will continue. The ďŹ rst staff bus each day will run from MansďŹ eld at 7am and the last off the mountain at 10.30pm. Shuttle bus services will start from 8am daily and run through to 6pm from Horse Hill.
NEW CHIEF: Steve Marshall has taken over the position of manager of Mansfield Mt Buller Bus Lines – a rise in the ranks after working for the company for 27 years.

way through to the mountain.
JAMIESON local Andrew Dwyer recently asked the question - ‘where will I go next?’ after taking a well earned break from his own companies and travelling. Well, the answer was Mt Buller. The Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) was pleased to announce that Andrew Dwyer was appointed as general manager several months ago, giving him time to embrace the workings of Ski Vic before the winter season. Multi-talented, Andrew’s love of adventure has taken him from national and international snowďŹ elds to outback Australia working as a chef, tour guide, entertainer and raconteur. He has won numerous tourism awards and sits on the board of Tourism Victoria, so his practical and theoretical tourism knowledge will be invaluable. Andrew is relishing this new challenge which will see him drawing upon all these past skills. Managing an iconic establishment such as the Ski Club of Victoria will certainly be a daunting task. Andrew’s brief includes overseeing two accommodation venues - The Whitt and Kandahar; a 100 seat restaurant (three meals a day); the Dump Inn and Ike’s bars as well as programming entertainment.
He is certainly ready for the challenge. His face lights up as he enthuses about his plans to provide a varied, appetising menu to entice skiers and boarders off Bourke Street into the Whitt for mouth watering quick lunches. “Customers at the snow are hungry and have very high expectations, he said. “Wonderful aromas in the cold atmosphere will certainly draw them in, but the food has to be warm and hearty, visually appealing and of course, tasty. “The team we have in the kitchen this year is extremely skilled and I think everyone will be amazed by the fresh, hearty and delicious ‘soul food’ our chef is planning to serve. Andrew is also working closely with the board of the SCV to maintain and build club membership. “The Ski Club of Victoria was created by zealous snow sport enthusiasts who built a hut, walked for hours to ski, organised races and generally put Mt Buller on the map, Andrew said. “I’m really keen to encourage more families to join us, so that they and their kids can experience the old style club events and activities, especially racing. This ‘action man’ is waiting to welcome you to a great family friendly winter experience. Make sure you visit the Whitt and say hello to Andrew.
ANTON GRIMUS: At the Winter Olympics in Sochi earlier this year, Anton was popular among competitors.
Anton Grimus: home grown Buller Olympian HOME at Mt Buller again after an exciting start to this year, Winter Olympian Anton Grimus was born to live his life skiing. Anton grew up on Mt Buller where his parents founded - and continue to manage - Hotel Pension Grimus, an Austrian-style pension, ski hire and restaurant. He has spent most of his life surrounded by snow. Like many ski cross racers his background is in Alpine racing. He and his older brother Hannes pushed each other and as members of Mt Buller Race Club competed at Junior World Championships. While at a Melbourne boarding school Anton took up a totally different sport and was a good rower before needing to decide between the two very different sports. Skiing won out partly because ski cross was emerging as an exciting alternative to traditional racing. In 2010, the year that ski cross made its Olympic debut in Vancouver, Anton as a 19-year-old made the permanent switch to ski cross.
Anton juggled his university studies and skiing for a few years before focusing on gaining selection for the Olympic Games in Russia and he is producing the results. The 2012/13 season was an outstanding breakthrough for him. He finished the season ranked 12th due to bronze at the Nakiska World Cup in December 2012, a seventh at the 2013 World Championships and eighth at the Sochi Test Event/World Cup. During the 2013/14 season Anton showed he has the speed to deliver top results by winning the qualification run at the Val Thorens World Cup in January. He then went on to compete at the Sochi Winter Olympics. And he went on to place 17th in both of the back-toback World Cup events. Anton is known for his long bushy beard that has drawn comparisons with famous Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.

These boots were made for walking WE all know how important a correctly ďŹ tted ski boot is to our overall skiing enjoyment. Obviously, how a boot is ďŹ tted relates to the performance - generally the more aggressive or competent the skier the closer or smaller the boot is ďŹ tted. This can make walking in ski boots uncomfortable. Walking around the village to catch a lift, taking the kids to ski school or hiking up the mountain to catch a better line to ski is a necessary part of the ski day. Walking in ski boots can be awkward to say the least. Thankfully, in recent years, we have seen more and more boot designers creating models with some walk modes. Some boots are built for the convenience of just wandering around the village while others have rubber under the middle sec-

tion for more grip when hiking over ice, snow or rocks. The bonus feature is how easy they are to put on when in walk mode, however you must make sure the rear is re-engaged before skiing. A serious injury due to lack of boot management could put a real dampener on your ski season.
For those who wish to explore the more remote areas outside of the resort there are Alpine Touring boots like DynaďŹ t. They have a very different sole that is only compatible with the light weight alpine touring bindings. Taking into consideration the advancements in boot design and the new models available, my advice is not to be seduced by a wiz bang feature you think you want, but to use the sound advice of a professional boot ďŹ tter. An expert will be able to assess your needs, skill and shape of your feet to ensure you are in a model and shape of boot that suits you and your skiing style. All other features are a compromise. At Bumps we have more than 35 models on hand offer some sort of walk mode.

Pizzini Wines marks a milestone THIS year Pizzini Wines is celebrating their 20th birthday. At this year’s Sangiovese ĂŠ Salsicce Celebration being held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend at cellar door, the family is marking this milestone by introducing a new experience at its food and wine festival. Pizzini specialise in the production of Italian wine styles in the King Valley, a region fast becoming known as the home of Italian wine varieties in Australia. Guests will have the rare opportunity to taste a selection of older vintages of wines in the Back Vintage Bar. “We have put together a selection of older wines mainly from the Italian range so that visitors can taste and experience how well Italian wine styles age and also for visitors to get a better understanding of how interesting, layered and textured these wines get with age,â€? said Joel Pizzini, winemaker. “In addition to this we are also working with wine educator Clare Burder to run a selection of master classes over our two day food and wine festival. “These organised tasting sessions focus on the wines we produce that originate out of Piedmont and Tuscany.â€? Pizzini’s Sangiovese ĂŠ Salsicce celebration is an event that is part of the Winemakers of the King Valley ‘A Weekend Fit for a King’ food and wine festival.
