IT was with great sorrow that the announcement of Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin’s death came across the worldwide press. Chumpy was a true Mt Buller champion having started his skiing and snowboarding career at a very young age on ‘his’ mountain. Becoming a world champion snowboarder and taking out the World Cup twice he always acknowledged Mt Buller as his ‘home’. For a full tribute to this home grown champ turn to pages 6 and 7 of this issue of Mt Buller News. PHOTOS: The International Ski Federation (FIS) Š Miha Matavz/FIS
Staying open, staying strong SO far, the 2020 snow season has had many unpredictable twists and turns, testing the resilience of all the operators unlike ever before. When restrictions changed for Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire in mid-July, Buller Ski Lifts and many operators made the decision to continue trading through what will be a low visitation period. Socrates Pilipasidis, president
of the Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce, said “it’s been really heartening to see the spirit of collaboration among the resort community to act in the best interests of our guests, staff and the resort. The resort’s marketing activity is emphasising the availability for lifted skiing and boarding at Buller, encouraging regional Victoria to visit while they can have Mt Buller and
Mt Stirling all to themselves. Locals will notice a push on TV, radio, billboards and social media to target the 23 per cent of Victoria’s population that is in regional Victoria and still able to travel. The impact of current circumstances has been further compounded by the lack of natural snow. Resort Management Board chief
executive ofďŹ cer Mark Bennetts explained that “completion of the new 100ML reservoir is doubling of our snow making capacity, which couldn’t be more timelyâ€?. “This winter when the natural snow has bene unusually low it’s a powerful tool for the resort,â€? he said.. “Put simply, our ability to make our own snow keeps the resort rolling.

Fire commander position fulltime on Buller SKIING fanatics and snow lovers enjoying Mt Buller’s snowfields will be in good hands, with the creation of CFA’s first Alpine Commander to focus full-time on the challenges of preparing, responding and recovering from fire and emergencies in the alpine areas. A Commander position has already been stationed at Falls Creek and at Mt Hotham-Dinner Plain during winter months since 2001, and at Mt Buller since 2009, but the new role will further boost CFA’s service to the popular alpine resorts. Alpine Commander Mark Owens will become the first member to take on the position, having
previously worked as a winter commander at Falls Creek. “This is just an extension of where I am now; I will be dedicated to the whole alpine area for the entire year, not just during the snow season,” he said. Community safety, enhancing the volunteer workforce, improving fleet infrastructure and equipment, ensuring building safety and compliance, and improving services with stakeholders will be in focus as Commander Owens oversees the implementation of CFA’s first Alpine Service Delivery Strategy Plan. “The risk of structure fire during winter is especially significant as the population and tourism
increases, as does the risk of a fire in a building, lodge, or even ski lift infrastructure,” Commander Owens said The position will also ensure a dedicated, year-round approach to managing the unique challenges faced by the resorts through the summer months. “During the summer, most bushfires start within public land areas and move towards the alpine villages where it is our responsibility to protect life and property, just like any other town in the state,” he said. “One of the biggest issues we face during the summer is that we don’t have as many volunteers around on the mountains. “This
role will help address issues like that, which are unique to the alpine resorts.” Commander Owens will also oversee the introduction of a new alpine pumper at each of the three major resorts which are expected to be in use by the start of next year’s snow season. Meanwhile, alpine residents and accommodation managers are reminded that the start of the snow season is also an important time to ensure all exits and paths to exits are clear of obstructions, that alarm panels, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are checked regularly, and fire and emergency evacuation plans are in place and practised.

“This has been complemented by Buller Ski Lifts investing $2 million to install snowmaking on Standard Run and to complete the installation on Men’s Downhill. “This extended snow making capacity gives more certainty for our visitors, which helps the regional economy including Mansfield and beyond.” Despite conditions not being ideal for snow making during much of July, the expanded snow making capacity will facilitate the opening of intermediate terrain including Summit, Men’s Downhill and Standard Run, as well as the reintroduction of tobogganing and other snowplay activities. “Some more natural snow will obviously make visiting a more attractive proposition,” Mr Bennetts said. “We’re all hoping for a
strong second half of the season, hopefully stretching well into October. “Meanwhile, we’re all doing our bit to keep our community safe and we appreciate everyone else doing the same.” A new initiative to assist with traceability should there be a case of coronavirus (COVID-19) at Mt Buller or Mt Stirling is the Buller ID and Stirling ID. Every visitor is required to generate a QR code that’s scanned at resort entry and participating outlets within the Village. “It’s a quick, efficient and touchless way to fulfil our State Government obligations to enable traceability that has benefits for our operators and our guests,” Mr Bennetts said. Visitors are required to book their resort entry online prior to arrival.
When doing so, they receive an SMS the evening prior to arrival to trigger creating their unique Buller ID or Stirling ID. The whole process is completed within seconds and enables seamless resort entry. When visiting Buller this season, guests will notice a few other slight changes to their usual experience to deal with the consequences of coronavirus. “People come to the resorts to have fun,” Mr Bennetts said. “That’s our focus while we implement the necessary measures to maintain physical distancing and fulfil our obligations to minimise transmission risk.” The full list of activities, retail, rental plus food and beverage outlets operating is available at www.mtbuller. com.au.

HAPPY SERVICE: Craig Jones has operated ski hire at Mt Stirling for 35 years and is still loving it.
Loving every minute NAME: Craig Jones Position on Mountain? Operator and Manager Stirling Experience - Mt Stirling How many years on Stirling? I have been operating on Stirling for 35 years - since I bought the ski hire business from Don Cummins and Jeff Hayes who are both good friends. I skied on the mountain with Jeff. When did you first learn to ski? I first learned to ski back in 1956 at Mount Kosciuszko where my family would go for holidays. We stayed at the Chalet at Charlotte’s Pass. After that the family moved to Buller and were members of Ski Club Victoria - The Whitt - where we would spend weekends and holidays. I did go to Falls Creek for a few years in my teenage years. And have travelled and skied overseas. Favourite place to ski? I love Switzerland. When we go there we stay at Meiringen but Mt Stirling has many good cross-country paths and I love it. Tips for visitors? “Bring an extra pair of dry sox” - but apart from that enjoy the environment of Mt Stirling - the beauty of the place is spectacular and cross country skiing is relaxing and fun.

“Unbelievably sad news; wonderful personality, local legend and an even better ambassador for all snow sports RIP Chumpy.” - Rob Aivatoglou - Mt Buller ON July 9 Mt Buller alpine community paused to mark the passing of local, and well-loved snowboarder Alex ‘Chumpy” Pullin, aged just 32. The close-knit community was shocked to hear of the unexpected passing of the talented athlete and wellrespected Olympian who was well known to many in Mansfield and Mt Buller. The Alpine Chapel bell rang out across the mountain with locals, including fellow winter athlete Anton Grimus, taking turns to ring the bell in Chumpy’s honour. The two-time world champion and three-time Olympian drowned while free-diving and spearfishing at the artificial reef in Palm Beach, Queensland. Chumpy, as he was known to all, was born and grew up in Mansfield and became a true sporting legend, hero and ambassador for the town and Mt Buller. He started his snowboarding career at a very young age heading up to Mt Buller to learn the skills he would need to go on to be a world champion. While at school he competed in snow sports, including the Interschools competition and Buller Race Club events. In 2011 at the civic reception held in Mansfield’s main street where he was given the ‘key to the shire’ he said “I’m excited and overwhelmed - it’s obviously been a big journey for me to get here and a huge ambition I have fulfilled. “But, I feel it’s only the beginning.” And the beginning it was. Chumpy went on to win two World Cup titles, compete at three Winter Olympic Games and was flagbearer for the Australian team at the Sochi, Russia 2014 games. But it was his community spirit as well that kept him in high esteem. In recognising Chumpy’s achievement back in 2011, former

deputy chief executive officer (CEO) of Mansfield Shire Council Kim Steinle summed it up saying “Some become the best at their sport and some become the best on Mt Buller - so good that they become the best in their fields - in the world”. This first world win for Chumpy, described as a ‘flawless round’, in La Molina, Spain had him inspiring others to fulfil their dreams. “I’m stoked - I hope this is a boost for all kids back home, thus building up a strong team for the future,” he said at the time. At an early age, just 14, Chumpy started to compete on the world circuit. He was the first junior in Australia to be on a podium at a world event. Although competing in snowboarding events around the world he never forgot where home was - Mansfield and his much loved Mt Buller. And when his world spinning career started to ebb he then took
on forming his own company and teaching the younger keen snowboarders the finer points of the sport. Chumpy held an exciting program at Hotham Alpine Resort to find the next Australian Winter Olympic hopefuls. After winning gold at the Snowboard Cross World Championship in Barcelona, he returned to Mt Hotham to kick off his brand new project aimed at bringing through the next generation of Aussie snowboarding stars. He launched ‘Chumpy’s Boarding House’, a mentoring program that gave eight outstanding young Australian talents the chance to learn what it takes to make it on the pro circuit. When Chumpy’s death hit the news the tributes started flowing in. “Very sad and surprising given he was so young,” Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management Board CEO Mark Bennetts said. “He was certainly a Buller
identity and his death will be recognised in the near future.” Knowing Chumpy most of his life, mountain identity Rob Aivatoglou said this was unbelievably sad news. “Wonderful personality, local legend and an even better ambassador for all snow sports RIP Chumpy”. And Chumpy was just that an ambassador not only for his sport, but for Mt Buller, snow sports and Mansfield. He retired from competition in 2018 after competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics and moved to the Gold Coast with his partner Ellidy Vlug. He pursued his other sporting loves such as surfing and free diving. He was also a very talented musician and loved nothing better than to get out his guitar and strum out a tune or two. In his younger days in Mansfield he would often play gigs at the local hotels.

I’m really lost for words - it’s shaken many people here and around the world. All I can think about is the legacy you’ve left behind. We have had a lot of time together, many memories, with my favourite being at the end of the 2-16 World Cup. I vividly remember that season with you and how it was a tough one for both of us. But, we topped it off by winning the last World Cup together. We won double gold for Australia1. It was a first for Australia in snowboard cross and it was the first World Cup win for me. I remember crossing the finish line and collapsing to my knees with tears of joy and then went to the side lines to watch you race. I screamed, yelled and cheered as you raced all the way down until you crossed that line. We both threw our hands up at the same time

Always living life to its fullest, full of energy and always up for the challenge when it presents itself. Chumpy, thank you for your passion, drive and energy. Thank you for the legacy you have left behind. Thank you for what you have done for snowboarding especially in Australia. Without you, it wouldn’t be the same. Ride on Chumpy - Belle. A car crash is not just a car crash – it’s a life changer THE Mansfield and District Community Bank is offering a free 30-minute video presented by Carmen’s Road Safety Education, in an effort to help reduce road accidents and save lives. This free presentation is for every driver - whether it be learner, young driver, parent or daily commuter. With motor vehicle accidents and associated deaths, injuries and trauma occurring at a rate five times higher on Victoria’s regional roads compared to city areas, road safety education is essential for our community and our growing youth population. Carmen’s Road Safety Education is one of Australia’s foremost road safety organisations. In this video, John Maher, the founder of Carmen’s Road Safety, shares his family’s story of how car accidents can change everything. You can expect the unexpected when you hear John’s true-life story, and you will never take life, and your role in life for granted ever again. GLAMOUR: Mt Buller Snowgum Xpress - your personalised taxi Uber service on and off the mountain.
Uber it around Mt Buller and beyond
THERE is a new way of doing things on Mt Buller this year - and it is not only because of COVID-19. Changes have been made as to how people are being transported around and to and from the resorts. One of those changes has been the introduction of private taxi drivers and services. Allan Bolden, Mt Buller Snowgum Xpress, is one of those operators who has been granted a licence as a Ride
Share - exactly like an Uber driver, as in MansďŹ eld’s and Mt Buller’s ďŹ rst fulltime Private Taxi/Limo Service. “Our services include taking passengers across Mt Buller, to and from all carparks plus up and down Mt Buller from MansďŹ eld, Merrijig and Mirimbah carpark at the entry gate. “I am also the preferred taxi for the Australian Sled Dogs Adventure Tours,â€? Allan said. He can also take passengers
for intra village transfers and on an alpine village tour along with private charters to explore the mountain and the surrounding area - including wine, food and brewery tours. Allan tries to operate 24 hours a day - that is if booked well in advance, can accommodate any time during the day or night to get people to where they need to be on time. This is the ďŹ rst time that Mt Buller has offered this service
with only two operators gaining licences. “People are extremely happy with private services such as these, and thrilled that they can include a private tour of the village if they have not had time to explore,â€? Allan said. To book a private taxi contact Mt Buller Snowgum Xpress on 0467 258 553 of email info@ mtbullersnowgumxpress.com.au. Advance bookings and conďŹ rmation is required.
More transport options for overnight guests INTRODUCED this season to Mt Buller has been new services for transportation of guests. The Ride Share service (formerly known as Valet Taxi), transfers overnight visitors and luggage between the car parks and accommodation. Guests can book in advance through the Mt Buller Transport
For all your
app, the Mt Buller website, or by phone. New for 2020, visitors also have the option of using one of two private taxi services, who offer transfers for overnight guests. These taxi companies set their own fares and the RMB have issued them with a licence to operate.
They work in a similar manner to a traditional taxi or Uber service with one booking per vehicle, rather than the Ride Share service which carries multiple groups within each vehicle. Any visitors seeking a personalised service can make a booking; contact details can be found on the Mt Buller website.

Terry ‘Speaky’ Lyons – ski patroller and guest services ambassador By ROB AIVATOGLOU
Speaky on Baldy in the ‘80s.
Mt Buller Ski Patrol on Bourke St in the ‘80s.
Speaky in Squaw Valley as part of patrol exchange program.
However, his mates Don Morgan and Brian Singer had joined the Ski Patrol by this time, and Speaky liked the idea. So in 1978 he started shadowing them. From 1979 he became a full-time member of Mt Buller Ski Patrol, which at the time was led by patrol aptain Don Chamberlain. Ski Patrol was based out of an old container on Bourke Street just down from the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV). Sandy Jeffcoat was chief for the Forest Commission and he decided it was time for a proper Ski Patrol base to be built. It was great foresight and they had the ideal location. Operations were located downstairs and staff accommodation upstairs, as it still is today. In the late 1970s and into the ‘80s, the Mt Buller social scene was alive and well for all patrollers. SCV was like a second home
and Koflers Hutte was the breakfast bar. In fact Bob and Chris Fleming treated all the patrollers as family (and still do). And of course late at night there was always the comforting stench of the Kooroora Hotel. It would be remiss not to mention the Grimus bar as well - fortunately the walls can’t speak. One great initiative was an early version of the ‘Buller Ball’. It was held in the old Comfort Station, ie the concrete toilet block that also doubled as our visitor day centre. In order to hold the function a liquor licence had to be granted. So organisers explained to the Victorian Liquor Commission that it was for a formal Mt Buller prize giving ceremony to be held at the Village Town Hall.
Ambulance Victoria. In 1981 Speaky became Mt Buller Ski Patrol captain and was an active patrol member until 2014 - 33 years of incredible service. Speaky’s son Nathan joined Ski Patrol in the mid ‘90s. Nathan also now operates ‘Speakys’ in Geelong, and for many years operated an apparel and accessories retail outlet called Off Piste in the Mt Buller village. However, the Speaky story had another chapter to run. For the 2015 winter, he joined Mt Buller Guest Services (the yellow jacket brigade). He was quickly appointed Guest Services Ambassador and worked with Brett Cooper from the Ambulance Service Victoria to introduce nine defibrillators around Mt Buller. It is testament to the cooperative spirit shown by all stakeholders including Buller Ski Lifts, Resort Management
Nothing could have been further from the truth. Melbourne celebrities such as Shirley Strachan joined resort staff for a no holds barred occasion. Suffice to say it was a novel event brought together by imaginative minds. In the 1980s Speaky developed the concept of an exchange program for patrollers. It was a great initiative that allowed our patrollers to gain great experience and exchange ideas around rescue techniques, mountain safety and equipment. Many resorts participated across North America and Europe. The extension of this initiative saw our patrollers doing regular training on Mt Stirling where search and rescue missions were practised. Through these efforts strong relationships evolved with Police Search and Rescue, and Air

IT was circa 1973-74 when Terry ‘Speaky’ Lyons decided to venture up to Mt Buller from the coastal township of Torquay. His good mate Don Morgan was working up at Buller, having made his way to Mansfield by steam train. Brian Singer had also made his way to the resort from the west coast. They were all surf buddies. Don was a plumber who was looking for a gig with the lift company. However, lift company boss Hans Grimus wouldn’t employ him because he had long hair (different times eh). Don finally settled on a job with the Forest Commission. Back then Mt Buller had two lift companies, Orange Lifts and Blue Lifts. Speaky started part time with Orange Lifts. The deal was simple: if you did lunch breaks you got a free lift ticket. Speaky did shifts on the three Bourke Street pomas (which started from Helicopter Flat), Howqua poma, and the two Summit pomas. In 1975 he joined the ski school.
Board and the independent commercial operators. At least one life has been saved as a result of this. Many have asked as to the origin of Terry’s nickname ‘Speaky’. Well it dates back to 1969 and his good mate ‘Long John’ Peterson. As with most Australian communities, ‘everyone’ in Torquay had a nickname. Long John reckoned Terry never spoke much. And so when Speaky was looking to open a surf shop in Torquay, it was Long John that made the call that it had to be called ‘Speakys’. Back then Rip Curl was launching under Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick. Alan Green and John Law had started the Quiksilver company. All were mates from the surf coast and passionate skiers. Back in those days not many people surfed in winter. Wetsuits weren’t what they are today. Most importantly they loved the freedom of surfing and quickly discovered snow provided that same feeling of freedom - only this time in a winter wonderland.

The Proddy Store for ‘grab and go’ meals or special occasion dinners By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY
WHEN you’re taking a break away from the everyday and heading to the High Country - particularly if you can spend time on Mt Buller - you won’t want to cook. The Mansfield Regional Produce Store, on your way up the hill, has solutions to suit everyone when it comes to quick and easy, yet delightfully tasty meals. When COVID-19 restrictions first went into place some four months ago, the store beefed up its selection of take home meals to heat and serve, as well as adding an extensive Gluten Free menu. The range from ‘Gron Haus’ is growing weekly and includes soups, casseroles, pasties, curries, terrines, pastas, tarts and a whole lot more. Many of the specialty delights are also produced in-house including their famous sausage rolls. As well as the ‘meals to go’, The Proddy Store as it is affectionately known, also has loads of local and regionally produced gourmet foods.
HERE TO SERVE: Friendly faces, friendly service at The Proddy Store, Mansfield, among them (from left) Mel Zwart, Gill Belle, Beth Kirley and Tom Bolitho.
Among the local goodies to tempt you are Jamieson Berries, The Produce Store relishes and pickles, Howqua Dale gourmets, Mt Buffalo Olives and Oils and to top off any meal with your coffee a delightful range of Ren Mar Chocolates - locally handcrafted, just to name a few. Owner and operator of The Proddy Store, Gill Belle, said the ‘Grab and Go’ meals are a great way to cater for groups, families or just for couples or even for that single person who’d like to enjoy some new flavours. The store also offers a range
of regional cheeses, more than 80 varieties of local and regional wines, artisan breads and even Beechworth Honey. For that special occasion The Proddy can pre-organise a special dinner - a menu to suit your tastes - and delivered locally, or as far as Mt Buller. “Our menu can be designed to your special occasion requirements whatever it may be,” Gill said. “Give us a call if you’d like to order something - we can talk about delivery / pick-ups if you’re not out and about.

“If you’d like to order coffees and meals online then please jump onto the Skip app and order that way.” And under consideration at present is a weekly delivery of meal packages to Mt Buller - for those staying longer - which can be delivered to your lodge. “We are happy to talk to anyone about their requirements for meals and delivery to your door,” she said. Mountain Memories quiz answer A: The ski run was cut from bush off the side of Standard in 1973 by the Blue Lifts. In fact they assigned the French Ski Instructors to the gig during one of the worst seasos on record. It kept them employed and out of the bar. No permits in those days.
PRIME LOCATION: Molony’s building has been around for a long time and sits in the prime position at the bottom of Athletes Walk just opposite Buller Grovers and minutes away from the Bourke Street Express chairlift.
NORTHERN VIEWS: A small balcony will have you enjoying morning coffee while taking in the spectacular northern views.
COMPACT AND CUTE: The kitchen in the Molony’s apartment is not large by any means but can still cater for meals for up to six people with ease.
Location, location – prime position
MT BULLER’S full time and long standing real estate agent Mark Woodsford of R T Edgar is excited about a new posting that has just been listed. Situated in Molony’s building - in a prime positon in the heart of the village, this two bedroom, one bathroom, one car park unit in Molony’s 2 has just hit the market. And the price is right - listed at $575,000. If location is key then this is the property for you. Located in the Molony’s building and in the Mt Buller Village Square, this two bedroom apartment literally has the Bourke Street Express a minute away. With the building entry off Athletes Walk you walk into the kitchen which comes with all ap-
pliances and a living area on the lower floor. With two bedrooms upstairs, one double and a bunk room, sleeping six is no problem. And with a separate bathroom and toilet, this apartment has got everything and all you need for your mountain hideaway. A balcony off the living area also allows you to enjoy the northern views and sun. There is also a car space on the title. “Mt Buller has a very buoyant property market at present which has buyers lining up to look at any new prospect of purchasing in prime locations,” Mark (Woody) said. “In fact the Buller property market is ‘hot at the moment’,” he said.
As additional facilities are being finalised in the resort such as the new reservoir, new development with White Horse, Kooroora, Bella Vista and three new developments in the near future - now is the right time to invest in your dream. “Mt Buller is also offering more snowmaking, more new lifts and more summer activities such as the Men’s Downhill; this is certainly the right time to explore that investment,” he said. “And because of the COVID-19 pandemic people are not travelling overseas but are looking closer to home and are buying now.” Give Mark Woodsford a call now on 0429 930 700 or email woody@rtedgar.com.au.

But as Eddie and Sarah point out their business is not just mountain transfer but also extends to a whole package of accommodation, meals and much more. “Come home to a warm and inviting two-bedroom apartment after a long day on the slopes!,” Sarah said.
