SNOW AND MORE SNOW: It was thumbs up from this young skier on Mt Buller following recent polar storms which brought excitement to the mountains with skiers, both experienced and beginners flocking to the resort to try their skis and snowboards in more than 70cms of fresh white powder. Mt Buller photographer, Tony Harrington was on hand to capture all the action. PHOTO: Tony Harrington

SIGNIFICANT snowfalls transformed Mt Buller over recent weeks with more than 90cms (almost the one metre) accumulating and steady snowfalls were expected to continue. The Bureau of Meteorology continued to forecast blizzards following on from these heavy falls. “It’s been touted as the strongest cold outbreak that we’ve seen so far this snow season, said Mt Buller’s snow
Ĺ°
Blizzards allow more runs to open
reporter Sarah. “The polar blast coming up from Antarctica has delivered...how good is it, she said. “Snow forms when tiny ice crystals in clouds stick together to become snowflakes. “And thank you Mother Nature for this ingenious idea that gives us
mountains of pleasure. Temperatures in the alpine areas stayed cold with Mt Buller temperatures not rising above zero for several days and overnight temperatures dipping as low as -7 for a next few nights. Following the blizzard conditions Mt Buller confirmed 20 lifts operating for the weekend of August 10
and 11 with more runs open in the resort following the deep falls. Skiers and boarders were excited to access more of the advanced terrain including many of the steeper south side areas that had been waiting for the additional cover this storm delivered. Mt Buller is currently hosting the Subaru Victorian
Interschools Championships which started on August 19. Did you know that the biggest recorded snowflake in 1887, was 38cm wide and 20cm thick - technically it was only the size of a large dinner plate. Sarah reported over several days that lifties were getting their outdoor gym in action over the weekends, their guns burning with muscly goodness ready to show off at the summer music festivals.

THE planned 380 additional car parking spaces currently being utilised at Mirimbah Park are creating an online furore as Mount Buller welcomes increasing numbers of guests. Spread out around and under the 100-yearold trees, the additional car parks allow for more guests during peak weekends. Although the car parks are currently creating a bit of an eyesore, the plan is for a similar system to that being used for the grass parking at the MCG. By embedding a layer of gravel into the existing soils, the grass will eventually become more robust and able to withstand the wear of car tyres. “We are not building new roads, we are not building car parks and painting lines and putting up one way signs – it’s a park and will stay a park,â€? Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management (RMB) CEO, Mark Bennetts, said before the season began. “During winter we will continue to park cars there and we just want to put into place something that minimises damage; it was muddy (in 2018), we said we are going to ďŹ x it and that’s what we are doing.â€? Despite his assurances, the RMB has come under ďŹ re for the muddy state of Mirimbah Park. “Should be ďŹ ne for the grass and vegetation to grow straight back after being absolutely demolished with heavy vehicles and then multiple loads of gravel,â€? Maclennan Sheppard wrote on the Mount Buller Snow Forum Facebook page earlier this month. “Thin layer of top soil; it’ll be right.â€? Ken Wallbridgen posted eight photos on the same Facebook page, saying “this is how the once beautiful Mirimbah Park now looks so they can park cars there for about 16 days out of 365 days in the year; a disgrace.â€? Even though sarcasm can be hard to ascertain online, there was no mistaking Mark Ashkanasy
UNDER FIRE: The state of Mirimbah Park has come under fire online after people called on the RMB to fix the muddy mess.
comment: “Looking forward to the “picnic in the car parkâ€?.â€? RMB have stated they will be putting a layer of top soil over the gravel after the snow season concludes for 2019. “We did most of the drainage improvements before winter and rebuilt the dirt roads,â€? Mr Bennetts said. “We’ve since put gravel on top of much of the dirt roads to avoid them turning to mud. “We’ve rolled aggregate into the grass on the sections where people will drive, but not the sections where they park. “The grass has started to grow through these already - but we’ve still had some issues with mud on some sections and a couple of other areas where people have driven or ďŹ tted chains. “Rather than leave them muddy, we’ve rolled in more aggregate to stabilise them and are conďŹ dent that they will grass up as expected after winter.â€? “We need to stabilise the park, so that it remains a pleasant park, (but) it’s important to us, ďŹ tting in as many vehicles as possible,â€? Mr Bennetts said.

A BUSTLING crowd attended the opening of “Evocation”, the latest offering from renowned local photographer Tony “Harro” Harrington. This is his third exhibition at Mt Buller and did not disappoint, with a stunning array of more than 40 art prints including a diverse mix of subjects from the ocean to the mountains reflecting Harrington’s nomadic and storm-chasing lifestyle. Many of the prints show a new and creative direction for Tony, who is exploring some innovative ‘painterly’ shooting and printing techniques that he
hopes help to capture ‘the memory of a time and place and the feeling you get in these special and wild places’. Popular images in the show include now historic images shot at Mt Buller including the old Kooroora Hotel and Blue Bullet chairlift, both of which were demolished at the end of the 2018 winter. EVOCATION is on show until September 7 the exhibition is open from 8.30am – 5pm daily in Alpine Central. All works are for sale and custom printed, with most being limited edition works.

LAURIE Blampied has had a 27 year career in the ski industry and 24 years with Buller Ski Lifts. Like many of our resort personalities, the journey to arrive here at Mt Buller was neither boring nor stagnant. Born and bred in Footscray, it was through friends that Laurie was first introduced to snow. A group of mates all played footy for Uni High Old Boys and one of the crew invited Laurie to tag along and join a trip to Falls Creek. Back in the day he learned to ski the hard way - straight up Summit t-bar (as it was then), point the skis downhill…and good luck, work it out for yourself. It was 1976 and the thought of a lesson had not even been entertained. Laurie quickly became an enthusiastic recreational skier and soon after met Anne who had also embraced the sport. I think everyone is typically loyal to the resort of their first ski experience, and this was also true for the now romantically linked couple. After graduating from Melbourne University as a civil engineer, Laurie joined Minenco - a subsidiary of CRA the mining company. This opportunity took him to many varied destinations including New Guinea, Brisbane, NSW and Tasmania. In 1983, he joined Newcastle based construction company Allco Steel as a project manager. During this time Laurie was involved in a number of major projects including coal washeries in the Hunter Valley, the last 150km of the Stuart Highway in SA, and the Darling Harbour redevelopment in Sydney. Come 1983, Laurie and Anne married, and soon followed three kids – Nick, Kate and Libby. They moved to the Hunter Valley, and although they didn’t have the opportunity to do much skiing, they made a life defining

decision to buy a share in a lodge called Ripparoo in Falls Creek. In 1989 Laurie transferred back to Melbourne and was involved in major projects across Melbourne. With Allco Steel being sold in 1993, it set into motion an unpredicted chain of events. The outcome was an unexpected conversation with a head hunter that had the task of recruiting the next general manager for Falls Creek Lift Company. Laurie’s engineering credentials were unquestioned. And his passion for snow was clear. In earlier discussions, he had defined his dream job as becoming “the poor man’s Hans Grimus”. And for their honeymoon, Anne and Laurie had spent six weeks skiing the South Island of
NZ (everyone has to start somewhere). They loved Wanaka (remember, this is historical). The recruitment process was swift and Laurie was offered the role but unfortunately it all fell over at the final hurdle due to outside circumstances involving the parent company of Falls Creek. However, a year later in 1994, Laurie became the assistant GM at Falls Creek. It was a lifestyle decision. He was 40 years old and it was the start of a three year adventure with the family and the resort. The kids attended Falls Creek Primary School. The Blampied’s connected with the community and embraced alpine life. Things took a turn in 1996 when parent company, Transfield,
sold Falls Creek to Ron Bassett’s BCR who owned the Mt Hotham Skiing Company. It raised questions as to the management of Falls and this was the trigger for Laurie to accept an opportunity and move back to Melbourne. Through connections, Rino Grollo learned of the impending changes and reached out and invited Laurie to a meeting. Initially, Laurie believed it was a gig with Grocon, when infact it was to join Buller Ski Lifts. After a year as Bruce Dowding’s understudy Laurie was appointed general manager of BSL in September 2017. “It’s been a journey,” he said. “The commitment and passion of our owners has driven the development. “The opportunity to influence decisions with great support of the owners has been a highlight. “The Grollos have maintained the rage with their investment 1994 was to be sabbatical year, and here I am 27 years later.”

More snow – more mountain visitors VISITOR numbers to the ski resorts across the North East have been lower than usual, however, were expected to rise with great snow falls over the previous week. Stats for week nine of the season (up to August 4) revealed that Mt Buller numbers were down by 13 percent compared to the same week last year. Mt Stirling fared even worse being down by 49 percent. However, following the

percent while Mt Stirling is down some 50 percent. Similar decreases are reported for visitor days with Mt Stirling recording only 3540, down 46 percent for this season to date and Mt Buller 40,425 – down by 11 percent. Although these figures seem low they are bound to pick up now that really good snow is on the slopes and the start of the Interschools this week should see the mountains buzzing again.

THE name Ros Ritchie is synonymous with the High Country cold climate wines – now renowned throughout Australia. Ros embarked on her wine making career in 1982 after graduating the previous year and joined the family business Ritchie Wines, the ďŹ rst such vineyard for this area. But the yearning to have her own label grew until she made the decision to break away and started her own company ‘Ros Ritchie Wines’. In 2008 she went into partnership with Barwite Wines and established new vineyards and new varieties of wines. She now has 12 wines under her own label along with the Barwite label and Friday’s Child. Ros has also yearned to have her own cellar door at which people could drop in and taste her selection. That has now become a reality with the recent purchase of The Magnolia House on Mt Buller Road at MansďŹ eld.

COME ON IN: Ros Ritchie is ready to welcome guests to her cellar door and wine tastings of Ros Ritchie, Barwite and Friday’s Child wine selections.
“Once again this lovely old house is being used and loved after being empty for two years,â€? Ros said. “The house has a lovely feeling, providing some quite intimate corners where people can settle in for a glass or two of wine and a chat.â€? Since opening the doors of Magnolia again, Ros has expanded what she ďŹ rst thought would be a weekend stop for visitors. Friday nights are a buzz at the home with live local music, free nibbles and grazing platters of winter hearty fare. She has also formed the Magnolia Club with regular visitors to the home – once again full of laughter, friendliness and happy times. Although ideally situated for passing trafďŹ c all year round, the Magnolia House Cellar Door will not be open full time. The Magnolia Ros Ritchie Cellar Door is situated at 190 Mt Buller Road directly opposite Timothy Lane and is open 11-4 every Weekend and Public holidays – as well as the now lively Friday nights.

Top juniors show their style VICTORIA’S best young freestyle skiers put on an impressive show at the 2019 Junior National Mogul Championships “jNatsâ€? at Mt Buller recently. In an historic first for mogul skiing at Mt Buller, the finals were held under new stadium lights, following a major investment as part of the Mt Buller Olympic Training Centre initiatives on the mountain. In total, 87 athletes from Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham competed in the event across two age categories, with $1600 in prize money from Mark Adams Real Estate, coveted medals and Bolle goggles. The event was very successful for the Hill family, with Angus Hill taking top honours in the Junior category, and younger brother Edward winning the Youth category. Eleanor Mullins won the Junior ladies event, ďŹ nishing ahead of the Speirs sisters with Indi taking second and Paris in third place. Local MansďŹ eld-Mt Buller athlete Georgia Bolton took out the Youth ladies division cheered on by her family. The day was a great success with many of the younger athletes really stepping it up in the qualifying session
during the day, before putting on a show for the crowd in the spectacular night ďŹ nals. The classic Buller fog didn’t dampen the spirits of the skiers or the crowd who revelled in the music, skills on show and the top-notch lights that will make more of these night events possible. WHAT A SITE: Kooroora is firing on all cylinders.
AN INSIDE LOOK: Indoors in Kooroora.
ROOM WITH A VIEW: Cosy and modern for winter.
Kooroora is thriving By ODETTE CARDILINI from WHITELAW FLYNN LAWYERS
WE wish to congratulate our client Altiset Constructions (a Grollo Group company) on the successful staging of the Kooroora Development. Having completed Stage 1, a new head lease for a term ending October 31, 2068 has been granted with the approval of the Minister and registered at Land Victoria. Buyers of car parks within the Kooroora Development have been settling with the benefit of a registered Sublease at Land Victoria
and shares in the lessee company providing secure tenure of over 49 years. This great investment has seen strong demand for sales. The Kooroora Hotel is up and running providing a great food, beverage and entertainment hub for all visitors to the resort. The Kooroora Development is a valuable asset to the Mt Buller resort. Once all staging is completed, there will be a mix of apartments, car parks and retail/commercial areas. The success of the development
to date demonstrates that with good preparation and expertise of documents to give buyers good security of tenure, buying into alpine resorts can provide good investment opportunities. Whitelaw Flynn Lawyers look forward to our continued relationship with Altiset Constructions for completion of the next stage of Kooroora and other alpine developments such as White Horse Village. Any questions? Whitelaw Flynn Lawyers is always able to help with your alpine enquires.
