WHAT a week it was from July 12 through to July 20 – bumper snow falls have rescued the season. Up until the beginning of July snow falls had been sparse, but when it started to snow – it snowed. “We haven’t seen the sun longer than a split second for a long while now, I don’t know about you, but for me, I deďŹ nitely don’t care right now,â€? said snow reporter Sarah. “It’s been a long time between major winter storms, and this is getting better by

the day.â€? And the lift maintenance and operations crews got only a short reprieve from not having to shovel large amounts of snow from the lift load bays when on the ďŹ fth morning they hadn’t had fresh snow overnight. The other good news was the small ground ora was ďŹ nally buried, and it was time to get lost in the trees. Crews worked hard to get more lifts open, and by last

Wednesday some 18 lifts out of 23 were operating including Tirol and Koers. Some even more exciting news was that Skyline Terrain Park got a fresh re-build thanks to the grooming and Mt Buller Park crews, getting in there and jib, jib away. With temperatures dropping to overnight lows of -2.4 degrees it was highly expected that more snow was on its way. Loving the wintry blast Sarah

reported it to be a treat walking to the lifts kicking through fresh snow and a top of no more than -3 and wind chill making it feel much crisper. Buller Ski Lifts communication ofďŹ cer Rhylla Morgan said: “It’s not every day that you see in the severe weather warning section of the BOM Mt Buller forecast that we are to expect, and I quote ‘blizzard conditions are likely over Alpine areas with heavy snowfalls, particularly

during the late afternoon and evening’. “Another 10cm of fresh snow in the last 24hrs - what a difference a few days makes, Rhylla said after two days of snow. And it was all just in time to celebrate Kids’ Week, the Cattleman’s Rail jam and Fox FM’s annual visit to the mountain which included special guest Brendan Fevola. With steady snow falls over a week it has now set the season for the remaining eight to ten weeks.

IT may have been a slightly slower start than usual to the winter season across the Victorian Alpine resorts, but with heavy snowfalls over the past week visitor numbers to all alpine resorts are set to boom. Across all resorts visitor numbers were down for the first five weeks of the season, but with bumper snow falls in the sixth week these figures rose dramatically. Figures calculated for week 6 of the 2019 season showed a 30 per cent drop in visitor numbers overall with a figure of only 80,517. Mr Buller had 37,688 (down 21 per cent from last year for the same week) but almost half the overall number, while Mt Stirling, which had very little snow until the big drop, had only 312 visitors (down 67 per cent). In comparison the year to date figures for Mt Buller are down only five per cent at this stage with 127,807 visitors and Mt Stirling 975 (down by 63 per cent). Overall though the figures across all Alpine resorts shows visitor numbers down by just 10 per cent or around 3000 guests. Mt Buller has experienced a steady climb in visitor numbers over the past 10 years with on average 63,330 additional guests or up by 42 per cent while Mt Stirling has had a decline 22,122 or minus 10 per cent. Recent figures released by the ARCC for visitation over summer has shown an increase

in vehicle numbers up by 2.3 per cent. Council’s research assists in the planning, development, promotion and management of Alpine resorts. It also provides quantitative information to assist in the reporting on the Alpine sectorwide actions to grow the summer or ‘green season’ market. Summer visitation reports are calculated from Melbourne Cup

weekend to Anzac Day. Just over 219,000 vehicles visiting the resorts showed an increase of 2.3 per cent, or approximately 5000 vehicles, compared to the same figures released in 2018. Almost 454,000 people visited all resorts which is an increase of four per cent, or around 18,000 visitors compared to the previous year. Annual visitation growth

remains positive, averaging 3.1 per cent per annum since occupancy surveys commenced in 2008/09. And an increasing number of road cyclists are also using the resort access roads, corresponding with an increase in road cycling events in the High Country. The full report will be made available soon to view on the ARCC website.

Mountain memories of our Indigenous people By ROB AIVATOGLOU

‘I ACKNOWLEDGE the traditional custodians of the land we have gathered on today. I pay my respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation.’ As we move towards a time where we are driven to learn about the sustainability of this land and our environment, it is appropriate we step into history where our ancestors lived and learn ways to improve our harmony with nature. Marnong - Mt Buller; a centre point of gathering in story, song, celebration, dance and feast for Australia’s Indigenous peoples. A place where tracks were only created by feet and animal, where wild raspberries and blackberries fruited and where the lyrebird sung in symphonies within the forest before European industrialisation. Long ago before the time of European settlement here in the alpine heart of Victoria between the valleys of Mt Buller and Mt Stirling lived the Taungurung tribe, the first people of the Rivers and Mountains. Traditionally these people lived a hunter/gatherer exist-

ence - co-existing in harmony with nature. The Indigenous people of this region are a part of the Kulin Nation of language. The Kulin Nation is comprised of five tribes – the Woiworung, Boonwurrung, Wathaurung, Djaja Wurrung and Taungurung and each tribe has its own clan groups. The Taungurung clan consisted of nine clan groups, situated in this region. The clan called Yawangyilam-bulok, which translates

to stone dwelling people, inhabited the land along the Goulburn River to what we now know as Yea and Alexandra through to Howqua, Delatite and Jamieson rivers beyond that to the Coliban River, near Kyneton. The clan groups migrated on a seasonal basis through their territories, dependent upon the seasonal variations of weather and availability of food. On the mountains outside of winter, the snow would

shed its water providing a perfect ecosystem for small marsupials, alpine plants such as yam daisies and the abundant Bogong moths to be in plenty allowing for a substantial food source. Aunty Judy Monk is a respected elder of the Taungurung people. She said her ancestors used the “low grounds for food and the higher grounds were also used for a food source, especially for the Bogong moths and traditional ceremony purposes.

“Ceremonies would take place when the Bogong moths came in; there would be a lot of negotiations and corroboree and business taking place between the clans during times of plentiful food,” she said. The Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) can be found seasonally in spring aestivating at high elevations in vast assemblages sheltered within the deep fissures between masses of granite rocks. The moths were easily col-

lected by being smoked out of unreachable crevices and knocked off the walls into reusable wooden carrying dishes or nets. Such fine mesh nets were made from the fibrous Bootlace shrub bush. In respect with the land, the Indigenous people made utensils out of the natural resources around them with little impact. The Indigenous peoples of this land were consciously connected to the seasonal transitions, stability of organic processes, enabling them to extend their food supplies throughout the year. Following a migration and the flow of the seasons allowed a sustainable food system to be implemented that would allow for flourishing of foods and resources for later returns when the seasons finally changed. This system created a sustainable and abundant network for all life forms for years to come. May we remember that our products may not always come from a sustainable place and that we can look upon these methods and their effortless balance with nature and see their sustainable ways. Use only as we need without taking more than we need and dispose of our rubbish thoughtfully for this beautiful place is to be shared for generations to come. More information of the Indigenous culture on Mt Buller can be found within the Alpine Information Centre. Source: Lili Marcovich

Stirling is an alternative place to enjoy snow play MT STIRLING this year has introduced a shuttle service for those wanting to ‘snow play’ or take part in cross country skiing. At TBJ Craig and Barbara Jones have operated Stirling Experience for the past 35 years and this year will offer a ‘Park & Ride’ service for those not experienced in driving through snowy alpine areas. Park your vehicle at Mirimbah and catch the free Stirling Express 4WD Bus Shuttle service to the Nordic Centre at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ). However, this resort sponsored service is available on Saturday and Sunday only, each weekend until August 25. The service departs Mirimbah Stirling Rd car park at 10am and returns from TBJ to Mirimbah at 3pm. Also this year, in conjunction with TravelSafe, (the transport company operating the shuttle buses on Mt Buller) a shuttle service between Buller and Stirling is being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Craig said this new service allows for those who don’t do downhill skiing and want a different snow experience to have fun. It also offers an alternative for activities on days that are too windy on Buller with Stirling giving shelter among the snow gums and either cross country or snow shoeing. The shuttle picks up at Buller at 9.30am and returns from TBJ at 3pm on the two days. “We also offer snow shoe tours to correspond with this

shuttle,” Craig said. “An experienced guide walks with guests for the day which also offers a 10 per cent discount on hire equipment and clothing if needed – but the snow shoes are included in the cost of the tour.” Mt Buller and Mt Stirling share a common resort entry gate at Mirimbah with visitors taking the left turn immediately through the gates to travel the nine kilometres to the car park at TBJ. The Resort Ski Patrol, Ski Hire, Ski School and Bistro, together with snow play, toboggan area and cross country trail head are all conveniently located at TBJ. Craig and his staff, including Estonian ski instructors, also offer a shuttle service from TBJ to the snowline when needed. The over snow shuttle is fondly called “The Beast”. It is unique, the kids love it

and it is one of the most capable 4WDs ever built. “The skiing and snow play mid-season is fantastic directly from the mountain car park, however, we do have periods when snow conditions recede from lower levels requiring a walk of up to 2.5km to reach the snow line,” Craig said. During these periods Stirling Experience operate the Snow-rider shuttle service. This fun open sided vehicle offers a great visitor experience for up to 30 passengers transporting them into the higher reaches of the resort for snow-play, tobogganing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitors can purchase a day ticket (adults $12, children $8, infants free) riding the service as many times as they like during the day of purchase. A fun way to see the resort and reach the snow.

GEORGE’S Ski Hire has hit the ground running in season 2019 with its new Demo Ski Centre being a big winner. Ten brands of skis are represented in the eet which equates to more than 40 models of 2020 skis being available for rent or purchase - the biggest demo range in Victoria. In a model unique to George’s at Mt Buller, intermediate, advanced and expert riders have the opportunity to ‘rent one ski, try them all’. Guests are invited to swap demo skis as many times as they wish during their rental period. It is completely obligation free. If a guest wishes to purchase a ski, they are able to purchase the exact ski they have just enjoyed out on the mountain. And if they don’t wish to purchase, they can simply return the equipment at the end of their rental term. Brands represented are: Volkl, Rossignol, K2, Roxy, Black Crows, J Skis, Faction, Atomic, Nordica and Elan. “We’re super excited to be offering the discerning Mt Buller consumer amazing skis, many that have had no expo-

sure in our resort for a number of years,â€? said George’s Ski Hire owner, Rob Aivatoglou. “J Skis, Faction, Atomic and Nordica are classic examples,â€? Rob said. “Lots of heritage and tech in that group. “From de-tuned race skis to beautiful carving skis, park skis and some sensational allmountain options‌we’re covering all bases. “And now, on the one day, a skier can try as many or as few as they like. “I buy skis I like. “But they are all like my children - I love them all equally,â€? laughed Rob. Rob and his wife Andrea took over the George’s business in 2016 from Rob’s father and mother George and Margaret Aivatoglou, who had run the Molony’s/George’s shop since 1970. Prior to that they both worked for Auski on Mt Buller. The family commitment to Mt Buller and its consumers continues. Climate Change top priority for new ARCC Strategic Plan THE ARCC (Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council) is in the final stages of preparing its new Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan 2019. Between January and May 2019 around 600 stakeholders participated in either an online survey or workshop engagement activities and those contributions have been used to inform the new strategic plan. A final version of the strategic plan is expected to be released by the end of 2019. In response to the forecast impacts of climate change (Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Victorian Alpine Resorts study 2016), the ARCC will, for the first time, incorporate climate change adaptation principles into its new Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan. The ARCC will use the contributions made through its workshops and surveys, along with the findings from the review of the 2012 Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan, to write the new strategic plan.

The final strategic plan will guide the development and direction of each ARMB’s corporate plan. In preliminary findings of the workshops and surveys, compiled by Engage Victoria on behalf of the ARCC, found 26 per cent of respondents indicated they were more closely associated with Mt Buller – some 100 in all. The highest number of respondents were associated with Mt Hotham (33 per cent) while 12 per cent said they were associated with all six resorts. Most people (64 per cent) indicated that they were ‘extremely concerned’ about climate change, and a large majority (90 per cent) indicated they believed climate change is an issue for alpine areas. Potential impacts could include diminishing tourism and snowfall, shortening of the snow season and loss of animal and plant habitat. Respondents were most likely to select the ‘natural environment’ as the Alpine resort value they felt was most important.

This was followed by ‘opportunity to participate in snow culture and activities’, and ‘a healthy and active lifestyle’. Respondents were also asked to indicate additional values they felt were important. The top three values identified were: ‡ SUHVHUYDWLRQ RI WKH QDWXUDO HQYLURQPHQW (33 per cent of comments reflected this theme); ‡ \HDU URXQG VHUYLFH ZLWK VXPPHU DFWLYLWLHV (21 per cent of comments made reflected this theme); and ‡ DIIRUGDEOH VHUYLFHV DQG DFFRPPRGDWLRQ (29 per cent of comments reflected this theme). In future, people hope to see resorts managed in a sustainable way that preserves the natural environment in balance with offering: ‡ \HDU URXQG DFWLYLWLHV DW UHVRUWV DQG LP proved tourism opportunities; ‡ TXDOLW\ ZHOO SODQQHG LQIUDVWUXFWXUH DQG amenities, including upgraded skiing facilities

and lift services; and ‡ DIIRUGDELOLW\ IRU SHRSOH RI DOO LQFRPH OHYHOV The results also indicated a strong push for balanced or minimal future development – development that enhances opportunities to participate, but not at the cost of the environment or visual and intrinsic beauty of the alpine environment. To achieve this vision, participants felt that focus on climate change, natural environment protection and investment in and promotion of summer activities was key, alongside increased funding and government support. Most respondents (87 per cent) participated as an individual and the largest cohorts represented were general resort users/visitors (36 per cent), property owners (20 per cent) or employees of a mountain business (18 per cent). Most respondents said they visited the resorts all year round.

Stirling Experience operator Craig Jones said. “Drop the kids at school and make your way to Mt Stirling. “Join our ‘Thursday Mums on the Mountain’ Cross Country Ski tour group – it’s great.â€? ‘Mums on the Mountain’ is offered every Thursday between 10am and 3pm. “Improve your skiing, enjoy the beautiful alpine environment and spend

However, there is a minimum group number of four people for cross country skiing. “So get together and come and meet our fun team,â€? Craig said.

Ski field tourism in boom times THERE is no doubt at all that Mt Buller is the place skiers and sightseers alike love. This love affair is simple. Mt Buller is only three hours from Melbourne and has extremely easy access. The population boom in Melbourne over the past 10 years has created an exponential growth in the skier market at Mt Buller. The property market is insatiable at present with sales exceeding supply of properties available. The most recent addition to the property market at Buller is the Kooroora 24-room boutique hotel. This property sits on a separate tow-

er within the Kooroora development ie above the Kooroora commercial bar and hotel. The EOI campaign which closes Friday, August 23, at 5pm, will provide a turn-key operation for an owner operator on what can only simply be described as ‘the most sought-after piece of real estate in the Australian Alps’. The 24-room hotel will be completed by July 2020 and is to be sold in one line. For details contact John Castran on 0411 502 424 john@castran.com.au. GREAT INVESTMENT: The new Kooroora is an opportunity to invest in a 24-room boutique hotel.

Why not own your own ski lifts A ONCE in a lifetime opportunity exists to buy the Ben Lomond Ski Lift operation and associated licence. Ben Lomond is a pictureperfect resort which has a bed base of some 500 beds and is at the threshold of becoming yet another famous Tasmanian tourism icon. Ben Lomond is located only one hour’s driving time from Launceston

airport and is located within the Ben Lomond plateau national park. The beauty and accessibility of the area is exactly what tourists are looking for all year round. A significant opportunity exists to develop a tourism icon that has been held by one family for over 40 years. The EOI closes Monday, September 30, 5pm. Offers of around

$1,750,000 are anticipated with a licence to operate the lifts and includes all seven lifts. For an information memorandum contact John on 0411 502 424 john@ castran.com.au. z LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY: Ben Lomond, Tasmania, is offering a ski lift resort – all -inclusive for the right owners.

New Kooroora nightclub and pub officially opens THE new Kooroora nightclub and pub is in full swing for peak season with the 21 residences and 24 room hotel to be built this coming summer. Licensed for 870 people over the two floors, the downstairs nightclub fires up from 9pm and the quieter upstairs pub is ideal for people to sit and have a meal. Kooroora owner Joe Masiano said, “the old Kooroora

as fun as it was as a drinking hole for over 70 years, it was a pretty unattractive building in the square. “The village square is a lot bigger now and the old Kooroora had run out of its lease time,” Joe said. “It had to be done, it was nearly condemned.” The new Kooroora was opened officially on June 18 and has been jumping ever since.

“Opening of the Kooroora nightclub downstairs and full steam to complete the upstairs venue and space in the new Kooroora development is super exciting for the renewal of the village,” BSL communications officer Rhylla Morgan said. “A sleek new building has changed the whole aesthetic of the village and is an exciting new chapter.”

Buller art show a hit BULLER Arts has fostered art from the mountain for several years starting with the sculpture art but has this season taken it a step further. Last year Buller Arts decided on fostering a young artist and approached the Victorian College of Arts to help sponsor a prize and choose a suitable winner. Guy Grabowsky was that initial winner of the Buller ArtsVictorian College of The Arts Graduate Prize taking home a

$5000 prize and the rights to hold an exhibition of his works on Mt Buller this season. That exhibition has just been held at Alpine Central. Guy Grabowsky is a Melbourne-based artist and photographer working with analogue photography. In 2018 Guy was awarded the Mount Buller Residency (for artists) where he was provided with the opportunity to make work in Mount Buller which would evolve into a

solo exhibition to be held on the mountain. The exhibition titled 1805 comprises five richly textured photographic prints and refers to the mountain’s summit which reaches 1805 metres. Each photograph has been captured on the summit during various conditions over the summer months of 2019. Once developed the photographs were abstracted and hand printed in the darkroom, disrupting the photographic

surface to propose an alternative dialogue for the image. The exhibition was opened on July 6 by former Buller Easter Art Show winner Mark Schaller (also a graduate of the college). Guy’s completed artworks were all for sale and once the exhibition has finished will still be available. For further information on the art prize or artworks for sale contact Samm Hetrel on 0418 855 884.

FOR ART’S SAKE: Enjoying the opening of the Buller Arts exhibition were Sue Clemenger and Guy Grabowsky.

Former Melbourne footballer David Neitz will be providing the entertainment, before getting iced himself, along with two of their beautiful bartenders, all for the great cause of ďŹ ghting MND. MT BULLER NEWS — Monday, July 22, 2019 — PAGE 13

ON Thursday July 11 the Snow Sisters held their most successful event to date. The night was held at ABOM, Mt Buller and was attended by 135 women and some honorary Snow Brothers. This year the Snow Sisters raised funds for the Disabled Winter Association to purchase a Zoom Chair. The Zoom Chair can transport people with mobility difficulties across the mountain terrain safely with the support of DWA volunteers. The Snow Sisters’ Italian themed dinner provided an extravagant four course menu with entertainer Paris Zachariou performing for the night. Paris has performed at many prestigious events including an invitation by Oprah Winfrey to perform at the Sydney Opera House during her last visit. He certainly had everyone up dancing and singing throughout the night. Auction items were plentiful offering overseas holidays, dining experiences, ski equipment, Sydney Harbour cruising, coaching by David Speirs (event manager of the Interschools Snowsports Programs) and much more. Generous give-away bags valued at more than $200 were provided to all guests donated by Christine Parkes from Tanned and Terri Vinson from Synergie Skin. Snow Sisters have also produced their first branded Beanie which you will see worn proudly by many at Mt Buller - proceeds will go towards fund raising for the Zoom Chair. Mt Buller snow reporter, David Clarke, once again donated his time as auctioneer and MC for the event. Snow Sisters was established many years ago to bring women together at Mt Buller and to raise funds for worthy causes on the mountain. The Snow Sisters committee (Sonia Evans, Sandra Maier and Suzanne Rumble) thanked all those who provided support and attended the event this year. Snow Sisters’ aim is to raise $22,000 for the purchase of the Zoom Chair so if you would like to donate to this much needed cause you can contact Suzanne Rumble on 0419 009 825.

Tips for snow and winter driving WITH extreme weather and poor light making driving dangerous in the winter months, make sure you adjust the way you drive with a few simple tips. Driving in snowy conditions requires a lot of concentration and patience. Stay calm if you’re stuck in a long queue and always follow road signs and directions by resort staff, they’re there for your safety. Maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front, it takes twice as much distance to stop in the rain. Reduce your speed and take-off a little slower, wet and greasy roads can cause a vehicle to slip and slide. This point was cause for concern recently, when heavy snow falls throughout a whole day on Mt Buller saw inexperienced drivers ‘sliding’ off the road on their way home. These small accidents could have been worse, but also cause delays in travellers behind being stopped or slowed even further. Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.

SLOWLY DOES IT: Driving in snow conditions is vastly different to just wet weather and advisory signs should be followed.

Turn the vehicle headlights on to increase your visibility to other road users. In fog or snowy conditions, use fog lights instead

of setting your headlights on high beam, if you don’t have fog lights you can use your hazard lights with your headlights on low beam.

Check the weather and avoid unnecessary travel in heavy rain, hail or sleet. If you start to lose visibility of the edges of the road

ďŹ nd somewhere safe to pull over. Driving in poor weather can be especially tiring so if you are travelling long dis-

tances remember to take regular breaks. You should always check your vehicle’s safety equipment, tyres, windscreen wipers, battery, lights and brakes. And most importantly take notice of signs advising when snow chains should be not only carried, but ďŹ tted. Practice ďŹ tting chains before a trip. Only ďŹ t chains to driving wheels (check the manufacturer’s guidelines when ďŹ tting chains). Fit chains at ďŹ tting bays on level ground. If chains fall off or loosen when a vehicle is in motion stop and check for damage, before re-ďŹ tting. Carry a torch, plastic garbage bag and gloves to make ďŹ tting easier. Use diamond pattern snow chains. Tyres must be in good condition with minimal wear. For better control of your vehicle and to prevent damaging the chains, drive at a lower speed and avoid sudden acceleration or braking. SOURCE: VicRoads website
