Animal antics at the Mansfield Zoo

CHEEKY: The meerkats at Mansfield Zoo are a cheeky mob and always in for a laugh and games.

HAVE fun meeting the animals at Mansfield Zoo – or even camp overnight if you dare. If you love animals and family fun, there is plenty to enjoy at Mansfield Zoo. The meerkats have arrived too, adding to the fun. The zoo features a large menagerie of animals from across Australia and around the world, including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (capuchins, marmosets, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats and much more. The zookeeper feeding tour is a great time to be at Mansfield Zoo. The four lions are fed at 1.30pm each weekend and Victorian school and public holidays, followed by feeding of the meerkat mob. Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingoes who walk around with a keeper while the lions are being fed.

HEAR THE ROAR: Mansfield Zoo has two white lions with feeding times daily for visitors to view.

There are sambar, fallow deer and kangaroos roaming the grounds with you, along with guinea fowl and peacocks. Bring a picnic lunch or use the free barbecues, just watch that the deer don’t steal your food from you. For the more adventurous, there’s nothing like trying to sleep to the sound of the lions’ roar. Overnight campers are welcome from September 1 to May 31 each season, but you do need to book a spot. Bring your own gear and set yourself up for a camping trip with a difference and take the opportunity to roam the zoo after hours. The Mansfield Zoo is open every day from 10am to 6pm and is closed on Christmas Day only. More information is available on the website, www.mansfieldzoo.com.au, facebook page, facebook.com/mansfieldzoo, or calling the office on (03) 5777 3576.

NESTLED in the centre of Mansfield at the base of Mt Buller, the all new Campfire Bistro at The Commercial Hotel is quickly becoming a local favourite. They offer a cozy and friendly atmosphere complemented by a trendy menu boasting bold American barbecue flavours from their smokehouse concept kitchen. Imagine fall off the bone ribs, maple buttered cornbread and low and slow smoked brisket served up with refreshing craft beers. Don’t miss out on the way home from the snow this winter as they are offering 15 per cent off your next meal when you present your same day lift pass or Mt Buller staff pass all winter long.

AMERICAN FLAVOURS: Grab a burger at the Campfire.

MORE SURF THAN TURF: Get served up salmon at the bistro.

“It’s a wonderful feeling of community on the mountain for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and it’s great to see so many new and familiar faces on the mountain soaking up the free entertainment, the fireworks and of course just enjoying quality time on the snow together,” Mr Bennetts said. Visitors have been noticing numerous improvements and

changes around the resort including a new-look village centre, new village transport service, additional car parks, improvements to the snow play park and updated dining venues. But a week before the long weekend, Mt Buller actually welcomed the first day of winter with sunshine and free skiing on the new Bourke Street Express chairlift on Saturday. Buller Ski Lifts owners Rino and

Diana Grollo were joined by their extended family to cut the ribbon to applause from the hundreds of skiers, snowboarders and sightseers who lined up to be the first to ride the new $6m chairlift up the mountain. Over 2000 enthusiastic locals and visitors flocked to the resort to be among the first to ride the lift and make some turns on Bourke Street ski run. “This chairlift project is a big

investment and represents months of hard work by many people – today we celebrate the start of winter by riding the lift and sliding together on fresh snow, which is just how we like it,” Mr Blampied said. This year marks the 70th year of lifted skiing at Mt Buller. It started in 1949 with a single rope tow on the Bourke Street run. Mt Buller is now home to the most modern lift network in Australia with

a system of 22 lifts and over 300 hectares of terrain. Mt Buller lift passes are available online from $66 for adults and $37 for children. Mt Stirling is open for the snow season offering XC skiing, snowplay and tobogganing plus alpine camping. Daily snow reports are posted at mtbuller.com.au with conditions, weather and lift status updates.

KEEPING THE WORLD WARM: Buller Ski Lifts donated their old winter jackets as part of the Donations in Kind program. The clothing will be sent across the world to those who need it. Pictured (from left) are Gayle Nicolle, Wolfgang Platzer, Joshua Considine, John Farmer, Louise Brennan and Jasmine Langworthy.

Winter jackets head to those in need

BULLER Ski Lifts donated hundreds of uniform jackets recently as part of the Donations in Kind program. Donations in Kind is a program supported by Rotary clubs in Australia which grew out of the compassion and concern of returning overseas volunteers. This recycling and reuse program involves the collection, sorting, packing, dispatch and distribution of donated items to countries in need.

Many goods and products, for which organisations in Australia have no further use, are valuable commodities in needy countries overseas – and the old Buller Ski Lift uniforms will be sent to places such as Chile and Somalia. Buller Ski Lifts has provided hundreds of ski jackets through the program this year – enough to ďŹ ll a horse oat – which staff services team member Lou Brannan delivered personally to Melbourne. Rotary clubs from Port

Melbourne and Footscray will now prepare containers of the donations, and will coordinate the logistics of loading and delivering the items to communities across the globe. Buller Ski Lifts are delighted to support the wonderful cause, saying it was a great way to recycle expensive uniforms and reduce waste while helping others; so if you are on holiday in Africa or South America keep an eye out for a Mt Buller jacket.

Arrive and save – pre-pay THERE are savings to be made this winter season when visiting Mt Buller. The modern thing to do is to ‘buy on line’ and with easy to download apps, purchases and information the savings can mount up. For instance if you are planning to stay overnight then pre-purchase your entry fee and parking – it could gain you $12 for further spending on the mountain. For extended overnight stays additional discounts are offered for those paying on-line.

And when parking overnight, and you have luggage, then a taxi will be required. Again book your taxi and pay on-line for savings of up to $7per person. An adult fare (one way) will be $14.40 on-line but on arrival will jump to $18 and children’s fares (one way) will be just $7.20 online or on arrival $9. So these little savings all add up when it comes to budgeting your visit to Mt Buller. If you’re visiting for the day, from the car parks you have two options - you can either

hop on a free shuttle bus into the Village, or you can ride the Northside Express Chairlift directly to the snowfields. Day visitors can also expect savings when arriving peak season weekends (during July and August). By planning your trip and parking at Mirimbah and catching a shuttle bus to the top you can save on fares and the cost of carrying chains. If you park ‘at the bottom’ you will not require chains – again another saving. Shuttle bus services will run

on peak weekends, so avoid the crush at the top. To secure day parking in the resort on busy weekends, please arrive at the gate by 10am. Purchase up to midnight the day before arrival date. Important: If you cannot print your dashboard pass, or if you do not know your car’s licence plate number at time of booking (such as a hire car), please stop at the gate and show your confirmation email to receive your dashboard pass and avoid a parking infringement notice.

The Helmet Kofler story EVERY Mt Buller skier or boarder has at some stage had a drink or meal at Koflers Restaurant. Be it a hot jam donut, spag bol, hot choccie or maybe even a ‘freshing ale, we’ve all enjoyed the Koflers hospitality at some stage. Sometimes it’s on the nice north facing sunny deck, other times it’s inside by the heater seeking refuge from the elements. Bob Flemming landed at Mt Buller in 1969, first working with Hans Grimus for a few years. He, and wife Christine, took over the business in 1971 and in recent times their gun skier son Toby has increasingly become the face of the popular eatery. The current structure was built in 1959, hence the odd character forming drip on the top of the skull every now and then. So where did the Koflers name come from? Meet Helmet Kofler. Helmet Kofler was a skilled ski-runner and ski jumper. HERE’S CHEERS: Helmet Kofler was renowned He came from Austria arfor his early ski jumps on the mountain. riving on our shores in 1927.

By ROB AIVATOGLOU

Ironically, he initially took part in a ‘learn to swim drive’ instructing down at Portsea. He soon after found his way to Mt Hotham (where he found the skiing a little flat and uninteresting…only joking) before moving to Mt Buller for the 1929 season where he became manager of the Mt Buller Chalet. He became known for his quick wit and rich sense of humour, becoming an institution at the developing resort as regulars returned year after year. His enthusiasm and energy was reinforced by wife Peggy, herself a well known architect and designer of the then modern Mt Buller Chalet located near Horse Hill. Helmet, an SCV member, built a giant ski jump near Slalom Gully which he advertised as the biggest in Australia. The take-off of the colossal

timber platform was 5.7 metres above the ground...not bad even by today’s standards. On numerous occasions he landed in a tangled heap and broke a rib, and legend has it, when he ran out of ribs he gave up and used the timber from the launch ramp for firewood. Very sadly Helmet and Pegg were killed on September 25, 1940 at Christensen’s Mill on the lower slopes of Mt Buller. They were riding a small timber trolley running on rails, the motive power of which was a big mountain ash log descending on the other side of the cable. The braking equipment on the winch drum failed and in a flash the trolley raced up the hill at tremendous speed. The couple had been married for five months and Pegg was pregnant. Skiing at Mt Buller owes much to the tireless efforts of Helmet Kofler. And his memory is perpetuated in Koflers Restaurant and Koflers Run.

TravelSafe teething problems on Buller TRAVELSAFE has come under fire just weeks into the job after customers were left stranded in the snow on the opening weekend at Mount Buller. Thousands flocked to the mountain for the traditional Queen’s Birthday holiday, with early snow falls encouraging bumper crowds. It was also the first real test

for Buller’s new transport operator, TravelSafe Australia, who took over the contract from the Mansfield Mount Buller Bus Lines (MMBL) earlier this year. However, guests were left unimpressed, some even calling for the re-instatement of the MMBL service. Briony Mitchell was very vocal on the Mount Buller

Facebook page, saying her experience on the weekend had been disastrous. “So disappointing Mt Buller with your new taxi service,” she said. “We are paying a lot of money for this service, and have never experienced this before in the height of the season when there are just as many people.

“A bit of rain is not an excuse; this is an alpine area and you are going to be experiencing a lot more bad weather and snow in the months to come.” Andy Struthers thanked the parking patrol crew, but said the taxi service “was a joke”. “The poor driver we had, it was his first day and everyone was giving him grief,” he said. “I strongly advise that the taxi service needs to be improved especially with the season getting busier.” Jane Geerling wouldn’t recommend returning to Mt Buller at all, saying “the taxi service is atrocious”. “There is a minimum three hour wait and no guarantees even if you pre book,” she said. “We spoke to people wait-

Taxi service labelled “a joke” after customers wait three hours

ing for two hours for their booking to arrive and they booked the night before.” TravelSafe Australia has not responded to multiple enquiries from the Courier, on this issue and others, but Mark Bennetts, Resort Management Board chief executive oficer, apologised to those who found themselves waiting. “Huge numbers of people headed to Mt Buller over the long weekend, making the most of the strong snow falls and the five lifts that were running,” he said. “While everyone made the most of the mild weather on Saturday and Sunday, strong rains hit the resort on Monday morning resulting in many people choosing to head home early in the day. “This put significant pres-

sure on the transport network and resulted in lengthy and unacceptable delays for many visitors.” Mr Bennetts said full refunds would be provided to everyone who booked a valet taxi ride on Monday, June 10, encouraging visitors to contact the Resort Management Board at info@mtbuller.com. au to arrange their refund. “Following a public tender process, the Resort Management Board appointed TravelSafe Australia to provide on-mountain transit services from this winter,” Mr Bennetts said. “TravelSafe is in the process of introducing vehicles and associated technology for the rest of the season that are expected to significantly improve service standards above those from recent years.”

“WELCOME to winterâ€? announced Resort Management Board chief executive ofďŹ cer Mark Bennetts at the get-together cocktail party on opening night on Mt Buller. “Inviting people from across the community it is an opportunity for people to reconnect at the start of each season and to catch up with everything that has occurred over the summer period,â€? Mr Bennetts said. Keeping it low key this year about 100 people attended the party including: Jacqui Jennings (RMB chair), Richard Leder (RMB deputy chair), Michael Monester (RMB director), Michelle Croughan (RMB director), Colin Hackworth (CEO Australian Ski Areas Association) and Anthony Carbines (MP). Among the ‘locals’ attending were: Nick and Monica Whitby, Martin Ansell, Laurie and Anne Blampied, Nick and Sharon Reeves, John Perks, Mark ‘Woody’ Woodsford (photographer), Simon and Jan Pluim, Mike Balfe and Sue Clemenger, Wendy Magee and husband Paul, Anne Jaggard, John Aird, Darren and Nancy Moore, Rob Aivatoglou, and Sox and Heidi Pilapasidis. Jacqui Jennings made a short speech, welcoming everyone back for winter.

Mr Bennetts then talked about the massive start to the season (4900 unique skier scans on the previous Sunday), the huge amount of development that occurred across the mountain during summer, and the changes and developments that the RMB had undertaken. He recognised that results were the combination of people working together and then mentioned the two people - mountain notables – who were no longer with us, and proposed a toast to a successful season in memory of Hans Grimus and Anthony ‘Combo’ Comben. Among the points made in Mr Bennetts’ talk were the completion of Bella Vista, Kabuki, Noman – Ill Posto, White Horse, Bourke St Express, the ongoing development of Kooroora, snowmaking, Chamois lights and the portable snow factory. He also mentioned the introduction of the Snowplay Express Park and Ride, the rebuild of Clancy’s Run, new road limits at Mirimbah and 20kph in the village, long orange poles, slow vehicle turnouts, funding application for hairpins and destination marketing trials with BSL. In ďŹ nishing Mr Bennetts said these things and much more would not have happened without people working together for a common purpose.

The all new Iron Maiden Smokehouse @ Spurs IRON MAIDEN SMOKEHOUSE

Open daily from 8.30am - 5.00pm when Northside Express lift is operating. Ph: 5777 7967

DON’T be surprised if you feel extra hungry riding up the Northside Express Chairlift this winter when you smell delicious smoky barbecue wafting down the mountainside. New to the resort this winter is an impressive barbecue known as the Iron Maiden. This ďŹ ve metre long, fourtonne beauty will be cooking up mouth-watering barbecue, including pulled pork, Texas hotlinks, southern style smoky barbecue chicken, loaded sweet potatoes and brisket sandwiches – all perfect fare for hungry skiers, snowboarders and sightseers needing something warm. The Iron Maiden began life as a steam boiler generating power - she was craned into place on the sunny north side of Mt Buller’s ski area and now with pit master (that’s the name for a barbecue guru)

Scott Gould on the tongs, she will be delighting crowds up at Mt Buller with tasty grilled delights for guests who will gather on the deck at Spurs to take in the views.

Open daily during snow season for lunch (when the Northside Chairlift and Spurs are open) – follow your nose and get in early each day before these tasty morsels sell out.

FRESH: Check out the all new smokehouse at Spurs. INSET: SUCCULANT MEATS: delicious smoky barbecue delights are now on Buller.

Master Builders present award to Mt Buller project Ű

Life at the top of the mountain

SCOTT James Builder and Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd may have received top honours recently at the North East Master Builders Regional Building Awards, held at the Commercial Club in Albury, but a couple of local projects also walked away winners. Scott James Builder was named Residential Builder of the Year for a monumental single-storey home in Tangambalanga composed of contrasting rusted steel and cast concrete forms. But on our own mountain, Altiset Constructions took out the Best Multi Unit Development for the White Horse Village Chalet on Mt Buller. Whitehorse Village is said to be the newest and most exclusive village in the Australian Alps. The highest residential property on Mt Buller, it enjoys sweeping views of the Bluff at a prime location with ski-in/ski-out access to Blue Bullet, Bull Run, and Mercedes-Benz chairlifts. Designed by Interlandi Mantesso Architects, Whitehorse Village is a first class chalet and hotel development, with a whole lot of “wow factor”. Each chalet has three apartments per structure and provides boutique style accommodation across 10 uniquely designed suites, with restaurant and cafe facilities. Designed around light and form, each floor of the project offers a unique aspect of the mountain. The metal-clad upper floors hover over a solid stone and masonry base, anchoring each chalet to the ground. The architectural design maximises mountain views,

manipulating light and space to best serve the region. Considerate material specifications ensured the development seamlessly compliments its location upon completion. Stone and metal were made to evoke a natural but modern aesthetic. These materials also provide alpine durability and

ensure construction longevity. Interlandi Mantesso has designed several distinguished structures on the mountain, including Mt Buller’s Village Plaza that was officially opened in 2014. Elsewhere in the shire, ChandlerBuilt took home the Best Custom Home for a project of theirs in the gateway of the mountain at Merrijig.

FAMILY FUN AT SUN PEAKS From the flow of terrain into the compact village to the family-friendly programs and amenities, families feel a sense of ease and comfort in knowing they’ll be well taken care of at Sun Peaks Resort. It is the second largest ski area in Canada with 4,270 acres of skiable terrain spread over three mountains giving skiers and riders access to anything from steeps and deeps, long cruisers, glades and terrain parks to suit all abilities. Sun Peaks averages over 2,000 hours of sunshine each year, providing many bluebird days and great conditions for the kids. Experiences extend off the slopes with many options for the whole family like dogsledding, tubing, ice fishing and much more. Mogul Ski World are Sun Peaks Resort experts and can build the perfect snow holiday itinerary to suit every member of the family.
