PLANNING Minister, Matthew Guy, has used ministerial privilege to decide on a proposed $5 million road from Mt Buller to Mt Stirling, rather than allowing the issue to be heard by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Although there is no current application to develop Mt Stirling as a resort, there are already objections to the proposal, fearing unconstrained development will follow its approval.
Attentive Staff
VNPA concerned by $5m road project, but resorts say it’s no precursor to development The Victorian National Parks Association (VPNA) has damned the minister’s decision, saying it has effectively cut down public scrutiny of the controversial road development. VNPA executive director, Matt Ruchel, said late last year the organisation met with the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board (ARMB), asking why a road

was thought necessary and what the business case was. “The VNPA has asked repeatedly for some sort of justification as to what value the road would serve in the case of emergency, but has heard nothing substantive from the road’s proponents,” Mr Ruchel said. “We are deeply concerned the road is just the forerunner of a much broader commercial

development, further fragmenting the bush.” The proposed road application described a three kilometre, all-weather sealed road to connect Mt Buller and Mt Stirling, providing emergency access and egress in the event of a fire or natural disaster. Minister Guy’s office said determination of the proceeding raises major issues of policy that
may have a substantial effect on the achievement or development of planning objectives. In October 2010 the Buller Master Plan Report forecast the construction of such a road subject to additional government funding and planning approval. A statement from ARMB said it plans to construct a road between the existing Corn Hill Road on Mt Buller and the Circuit Road at Howqua Gap on Mt Stirling, linking the two resorts. Continued page 2

Proprietor of Stirling Experience, Craig Jones, said the road had been held up by inter-departmental wrangling and it was high time the minister pulled it back. “Going forward, developments are the key to year-round use, he said. “A road would be good for Mt Buller and Mt Stirling and good for the town. “Mt Stirling and Mt Buller are not pristine – resorts should be able to cater for people. “Around 70 per cent of Mt Stirling was clear felled – it’s a real credit to nature that it’s recovered so well.

Winter popular, and more want to see snow: survey IN light of the recent record snowfalls, a survey undertaken by Newspoll found three in every four Australians (75 per cent) actually like winter, but only one in five (20 per cent) Aussies have experienced or seen the magic of snow in their lifetime. The survey found that 75 per cent were however, keen to have a snow holiday. By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY MT BULLER and Mt Stirling are recording a ‘bumper season’, with the best snow on the ground since 1981. And there have been no shortage of visitors wanting to take advantage of the snowfalls. In the week of July 14 to 20, Mt Buller welcomed 33,555 people to the resort, which is huge. It is believed that some 2000 cars were parked on the mountain on Sunday alone. Saturday saw almost as many with more than 30 tourist buses parked at Horse Hill. Adding to previous total of 79,130 that brings visitor numbers to 112,685 for the season which is the highest year to date figure in more than 10 years. At the opening of the ski season, ARMB chairman Jennifer Hutchison predicted this season to be big. Mt Buller Mt Stirling RMB chief executive officer John Huber said on Monday that season 2014 is certainly turning out to be one for the record books, with the resort

enjoying the best conditions we’ve seen since 2004. “In the past three weeks we’ve had more than 100cm of snowfall, and we currently have all 22 lifts operating across 100 per cent of terrain,” he said. “The snow arrived just in time for school holidays, which meant many families from Victoria and interstate have enjoyed these wonder-
ful conditions. “Visitor numbers have been very strong, with more than 112,000 visitors enjoying the resort to date this season. “Over the coming weeks the resort has some fantastic events taking place, including the Mt Buller Winter Adventure Race, Backcountry Film Festival, K2 Women’s Weekend and
Christmas Week all coming up soon. “We look forward to seeing plenty of Mansfield locals on the mountain enjoying these sensational conditions and the great calendar of events and activities on offer.” The resort currently has an average natural cover of 109cm, and the weather gods are forecast to deliver even more of the white stuff. “There is so much happening on top of the world right now - we hope you can join us soon,” Mr Huber said. Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied said it was really exciting to see Mt Buller experiencing its best season in a decade, with over a metre of snow on the ground, all 22 lifts turning and the entire ski area open. “With great snow and weather during the Victorian school holidays, we did welcome a large number of guests to the mountain and onto the slopes,” he said. “Thankfully though our lifting system is capable of moving over 40,000 guests per hour, so the resort is very well equipped to deal with a high influx of guests during busy periods of the season.”

First ‘ski running’ in 1926 THE start of competitive ‘ski-running’ on Buller was ďŹ rst held in August 1926. With much planning some 20 keen skiers, and even more spectators, trekked their way to ‘the hut’ which had been prepared during the previous week by Merrijig’s Jack Lovick. Mr Lovick had taken up provisions for the skiers on horseback and was to cater for them during their weekend on the mountain. Conditions had been excellent with plenty of snow and bright sunny days. PG Goldby reported “Arrangements to supply the inux of visitors and competitors with the necessary food, crockery, etc had to be made, and the transport to the hut per pack hose arranged for.â€? He continued his report by saying that more than a score of pack and riding horses had to be taken up to the hut, some 5000 feet and returned to Merrijig the same night, a distance of some 25 miles. On arrival on the Friday the party began working on marking the racing tracks with ags and a rough survey of a course was carried out – over a distance of about one mile (1.5km). The ‘troops’ found the weather really hot, and after a morning on the skis they were ‘greatly refreshed by a rub-down of snow’.

CONTINUING: Buller News’ history of the Ski Club of Victoria, celebrating 90 years, this issue’s article dates back to 1926 with the beginning of the first championship race meeting of the club.
“By 2.30pm friend Lovick was at the hut with pack horses, riding hacks and visitors to see the fun, all nearly frozen, but seemingly happy,â€? – Mr Goldby reported. A meeting of competitors decided that an effort should be made to complete the program if possible rather than cancel the arrangements. A novice race was held with only four competitors – conditions ‘testing the stamina rather than ski-running’ – the first events being won by ‘old stayer – Clive Morrish’. Although abandoned the ďŹ rst year, it was deemed to try again the following year with the event being held over six days and not two, thus giving them more time to battle the elements if necessary. s (ISTORY PROVIDED BY 3#6 COMPILED FROM THE 9EAR "OOK BY 0AM :IERK -AHONEY

Dwyer in state’s top tourism job
THE “I AM ALTITUDE photographic exhibition will be on show in Alpine Central from August 2 to 16. Mt Buller Events warmly invites everyone to attend the opening reception of the ‘I AM ALTITUDE’ photographic exhibition, a stunning collection of photographs by Ciaran Handy celebrating the wintry beauty of Mt Buller. The opening event on August 2 will be from 5pm to 7:30pm on Level 6, Alpine Central, Summit Road. The exhibition includes a virtual exhibition of Ciaran’s full collection. All works are for sale. This is a free event, sponsored by Nikon, Delatite Wines, AAIPP and Mt Buller - Mt Stirling Resort Management.
He said this was the ďŹ rst time a person from regional Victoria has been appointed to the top job and he was thrilled he had been chosen. “Tourism in Victoria is a dynamic and exciting industry,â€? Mr Dwyer said. “I plan to build on the good work already done, ensuring Melbourne retains and builds on its leading position. “Coming from the bush I am keen to increase visitation to regional Victoria through advancing nature based tourism.
“Victoria’s natural assets are a magniďŹ cent drawcard, however, investment in the infrastructure to support and increase visitation while protecting the environment is underdeveloped. “I will be exploring ways to enhance visitors’ experience of our natural places, development and conservation do not need to be mutually exclusive. “There are examples of best practise eco developments worldwide, there is
no need for us to reinvent the wheel.â€? In 2006 Mr Dwyer was recipient of ‘The most signiďŹ cant contribution by an Individual to the Tourism Industry,’ award. He will bring a hands on approach to the job. He still personally leads expeditions into the remote Western Desert regions of Central and Western Australia through his operation Diamantina Touring Company.
Will’s slick runs win Canada trip By LIZ WEBB THE Ski Club of Victoria Race Season 2014 took off in a most exciting way on Saturday, July 12. Race two saw 75 racers compete to win a holiday in Big White Resort, Canada. Big White representative Geoff Walker presented an ecstatic (first time racer) Will Burrell (pictured left) with his prize voucher. The criterion was most consistent time between first and second runs - and unbelievably it was a dead heat. Two racers had .11 of a second between their runs; fastest time was resorted to as a tie-breaker. Racers aged from 4 to 82 years participate each Saturday in this friendly, yet very competitive sport. It’s a great way for families to have fun together. PHOTO: Liz Webb

The ingenious and downto-earth creator of Cross Board, Adelaide-based surďŹ ng, skating and snowboarding thrill-seeker Dave Elphick (his mates call him ‘Max’), has joined forces with Bryan Te Wani to establish Maxt Sports. Both founders are stoked with the release of their ďŹ rst cutting-edge product. “Basically, the Cross Board has been engineered like a skateboard with a truck-based dual bladed board designed to control edging and side cuts,â€? said Max. “It helps new riders learn

To ofďŹ cially kick it off, this winter Maxt Sports has released 500 baseline Cross Boards exclusively to Mt Buller, with 100 Cross Boards available for purchase and 400 for rental. Mt Buller will be known as the ‘Home of Cross Board’, these will be exclusively available through George’s Ski Hire and Buller Sports. Cross Board lessons will also be available from Mt Buller’s Ski and Snowboard School. Those who purchase one of the ďŹ rst 100 release Cross Boards will automatically become part of a unique and ongoing community at Mt Buller. Buller Ski Lifts general manager, Laurie Blampied, said: “Mt Buller and Buller Sports are pleased to support Cross Board and align with

His undeniable foundations in traditional blues music has meant that he’s been able to explore all kinds of musical boroughs without ever diluting his blues bent nor his credibility. Money raised is being spent for better visitor experiences IN the second of Buller News’ series on Alpine Resort Management Boards’ (RMBs) management of funding – this issue we look at where the money comes from and where it is spent. RMBs get no government funding other than grants which they apply for and compete for against all other shires and community projects. The majority of funds come from leases, gate entry and service charges. Service charges are fairly easily explained and account for about one third of income. The other two thirds are spent across staff - both all year round and seasonal - in areas such as road clearing, parking,
shuttle services, guest services and marketing. The marketing component of the resort ensures that visitors from across Australia and internationally have the best available information about Mt Buller and Mt Stirling, attract events to the resorts which bring additional visitors and giving those visitors the best possible experience while on the mountain. Commercial operators and lodges receive water, garbage collection, road clearance, sewerage and recycling for their service charges. On top of this management boards upgrade public facilities, carry out road maintenance (within village areas)
and improve infrastructure as required. Rubbish removal and recycling is a big part of the board’s management with Mt Buller taking the lead in composting and recycling with its Living Bin project. The mountain currently recycles 41 per cent of the remaining waste – an increase of 33 per cent in the year prior to the trial and the highest of any other alpine resort in Victoria. The Green Waste Bin also recycles more than 50 tonnes of waste food products produced particularly during the winter season. It is programs such as the Living Bin and Green Waste
Bin that are established as part of the management board’s ongoing development. In 2010 the RMB developed the Mt Buller Resort Master Plan (RMP), aimed at helping the resort to be more sustainable and help combat the effects of climate change. Additionally, many of the initiatives within the RMP are designed to reduce the operating costs and improve efficiencies of the mountain. Significant investment in snowmaking infrastructure has been made by resort management and Buller Ski Lifts (BSL), with snowmaking now covering close to 80 hectares of terrain. Visitation figures have
Snoeshoeing the way to travel
shown that even in years where natural snowfalls are low, snowmaking has ensured a consistent product and as a result, visitor numbers remain strong and well ahead of other Victorian resorts. Buller Stirling RMB is focused on ensuring the resorts are viable, sustainable yearround destinations, by investing in mountain bike trails and associated infrastructure and services, and hosting a range of events designed to showcase the resort’s natural assets. The development of the EPIC Mountain Bike Trail will also ensure the resort will become a national and international destination over summer periods.

quieter than Apres at other mountain venues, but it’s a great way to appreciate just how far the snow sports we all love have improved since the early days. How did we manage to carve turns on those huge, unwieldy planks called skis, and when you see the very first snowboards, you’ll realise why everyone thought boarders were crazy.
See amazing video footage of our hardy pioneers as they skied in long skirts, trekked for miles to get to the top of the summit or enjoyed themselves at Kooroora. And if you thought nutcrackers were for opening nuts, well come and see what they were really used for. Apres at the Museum is

Snowboarder Profile NAME: Harry Green. AGE: 18 years. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN SNOWBOARDING?: Since I was 11, so about seven years. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY AT THE SNOW PARK?: It depends on the day - I really like the jumps when the snow is good, but in spring when the snow is softer, I like the rails. HAVE YOU EVER SNOWBOARDED OVERSEAS?: Yes - for the past four years I have been going to Breckenridge in Colorado, training at the Transition Snowboard Camp. They’ve recently moved to Mansfield from Melbourne and they also operate camps in New Zealand near Wanaka in the South Island. I’ve been to New Zealand to the camp also. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT MOUNT BULLER?: It’s familiar - the terrain is good and I know a lot of people up there.
THEY’RE OFF: Snowgaining adventurers will be off and ‘running’ in the first snowgaining and adventure race this Saturday on Mt Buller. PHOTO: Mt Buller - Andrew Railton +DUU\ *UHHQ WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED ON BULLER THIS YEAR?: I really enjoyed the Rail Jam. I landed all my tricks and made the finals, so I was pleased with that. As for the rest of the season, I need to see what my year 12 commitments are before I think about Buller. WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE SLOPES, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?: Studying and skateboarding. I’m very involved in the move to get a new skate park for Mansfield.

Try snowgaining, adventure racing
MT BULLER has introduced yet another great activity to give visitors to the snowfields something new and adventurous to experience. Rogaining enthusiasts and those who love adventure and racing of a different kind are set to take their sport to new heights with the introduction of snowgaining at Mt Buller. To celebrate the launch of this new activity, the resort will host the Mt Buller Winter Adventure Race this Saturday, July 26. This event involves pairs of competitors racing around Mt Buller to find all nine checkpoints within the quickest possible time. All competitors start and finish in the Mt Buller Village Square so that their race times can be recorded, with the winners announced once all registered teams have returned to the Village Square. While most teams will uti-
lise chairlifts (with their downhill skis and snowboards) to complete this course, the event also offers an ‘Open Backcountry’ division, which limits competitors to only using human power to navigate the snowfields, such as snow shoes and cross country skis. The Mt Buller Winter Adventure Race costs $25 per team to enter, and registrations are now available online via Eventbrite (eventbrite.com.au) which can be accessed directly or via the Mt Buller website. Teams can register in one of a number of divisions including Open Male and Female Pairs, Junior Male and Female Pairs (14-17 years old) and Open Backcountry Pairs. There are a great range of prizes up for grabs for the winners of each category, and each entrant will receive an event pack, certificate of completion and a free ticket to the 2014
Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival screening in the Mt Buller Cinema also this Saturday at 7pm. Snowgaining offers high altitude orienteering that requires participants to use a map and a series of clues to navigate between checkpoints located around Mt Buller’s snowfields, offering a great way to explore the resort and enjoy the alpine environment. To participate in this activity, people simply collect a snowgaining card from any visitor information outlet in the Village, and then head out into the snowfields to find the nine checkpoints. Each checkpoint is identified by an orange and white panel (the standard international orienteering symbol), and features a unique hole punch that is to be used to mark the snowgaining card and prove the point has been discovered.
Once the course has been finished, the completed card is then returned to the Alpine Central Visitor Information Centre where the person will receive a prize for their efforts. “Mt Buller is in a unique position in that it can offer rogaining – an activity that is popular worldwide – in a snow environment that poses new challenges and rewards for enthusiasts,” said Ben Annear from Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management. “With the high level of snow that the resort is currently experiencing, there’s never been a better time to get out on your skis, snowboard or snow shoes and take up the snowgaining challenge.” For further information about snowgaining, the Mt Buller Winter Adventure Race or the Back Country Film Festival, contact Resort Management on 57776077 or visit mtbuller.com.au.

Third Rail Jam title for Kearney with a creative display of spins in and out, stylish presses and technical switch riding. Tommi was also awarded the Mophie Best Trick with a frontside lip slide – gap to flat on the top closeout, a super high consequence manoeuvre never seen at Cattleman’s. Old Burton friend ‘The Mooch’ kept the crowd entertained with his unique mash ups, playing from his specially designed Mini Countryman DJ booth. With a bumper season already under way at Mt Buller, the Cattleman’s Rail Jam day kicked off with qualifiers on the Burton Cattleman’s Replica Stair Set in the Frank MBP Terrain Park. “Once again it’s great to see so many up and coming youngsters from all over Australia in the field,” said Paul Colby, Burton Australian marketing manager. “New faces and old, the qualifiers really brings together a great bunch of people. “It’s a grass roots event that gives everyone a chance to compete and prove themselves against some of the best riders in Australia.” The day’s qualifying semi final was taken out by Cameron Staveley ($500), followed by Tim Laidlaw in second place ($300) and Falls Creek veteran Matt Galina in third ($200). As in years past, the official after party presented by Skullcandy at the Kooroora Hotel did not disappoint. The Mooch took his mash ups to the next level in the Back Bar, and with help from Corona, the Cattleman’s after party remains one of the most talked about events on the Australian snow calendar. Results: 1st Place - $4000 - Jye Kearney; 2nd Place - $2000 – Cameron Staveley; 3rd Place - $1000 – Tommi Ollikainen; Best Trick – Mophie Prize Pack - Tommi Ollikainen. Watch the official Cattleman’s Web Edit at http://youtu.be/sPfmIh5h83k.

IN what was one of the closest finals to date, Jindabyne local and Burton rider Jye Kearney snatched his third Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam title, edging past 14 of the country’s best snowboarders on Mt Buller’s famed Cattleman’s Stair Set on July 19. As one of the veterans of the Cattleman’s field, Kearney pocketed another $4000 cheque, sealing victory ahead of second placed Cameron Staveley (Mt Buller ambassador) and third placed Cattleman’s rookie Tommi Ollikainen. Kearney’s experience in the event certainly showed as he worked methodically through his session, landing virtually every combination of 270s on and off the rail, impressive gaps from the upper takeoff and hits from both the left and right top close-out rails. Kearney always impresses the judges with his famously casual style, consistent makes, and solid creative use of the entire staircase. “I feel like the old guy now – but Cattleman’s is always a fun time, and I was stoked to come away with another win,” Kearney said as he clutched another novelty cheque to add to the collection he keeps in his lounge room. But Kearney’s victory didn’t come easy. Staveley has improved his rail riding in leaps and bounds over the past few years, with a raw talent and technical ability rivalled by very few. His use of the whole stair set including the kink and both outer rails secured him second place and $2000. One of the beauties of the open Cattleman’s qualifying format is the ability for little known riders to step up to the plate and prove themselves against Australia’s best riders. In his first season in Australia and first time to Mt Buller, Tommi Ollikainen known as “Finland Tommi” was awarded third place

Artist exhibits at Alpine Central SOME 80 people attended the opening of the Sally Joubert exhibition on July 5 in the Interpretive Centre and reception area of Alpine Central at Mt Buller. Mt Buller Arts Association (BAA) chairman, Michael David, introduced Sally to the gathered art enthusiasts. He first outlined forward plans the BAA has for future art events and the ongoing development of the exciting Mt Buller Sculpture Park. Sally had been a regular multi entrant in the former Easter Art Exhibition and Prize always selling out. Well, to no surprise to those who invited Sally to mount this wonderful exhibition and those who assisted in organising, hanging and catering, 18 out of 26 paintings plus two commissions had been achieved within 24 hours, making one very happy artist. So, keep an eye open of notification of future BAA events. They promise to be exciting, fun and, above all, quality.

Be safe on the slopes this snow season SNOW sports enthusiasts are being urged to make safety their first priority this snow season. Both skiing and snowboarding carry a high risk of injury, with recent hospital data revealing nearly 3000 Victorians were treated in hospital for snow sports related injury during the 2010 to 2013 snow seasons. Of those admitted to hospital, broken bones were the most common injury with 60 per cent reporting fractures, while dislocations and sprains comprised 20
per cent of injuries. Falls were the most common cause of injury. Sports Medicine Australia spokesperson and sports physiotherapist, Rosemary Riley, said good preparation is the key to minimising injury risk and getting the most out of the snow season. “Skiing and snowboarding are both physically demanding sports that require flexibility, balance and quick reflexes, as well as strong lower limb and trunk muscles and a good overall level of fitness,” Ms Riley said.
“With the big snow fall coinciding with the start of school holidays, parents should also ensure children are well prepared, only ski or snowboard when accompanied by a responsible adult and are fitted with appropriate equipment, clothing and protective headgear.” Tips for undertaking good preparation: undertake pre-season conditioning and training to build up your fitness, strength and flexibility. Focus on strengthening the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups
to improve knee control to help negotiate moguls; take ski/snowboard lessons to develop skills and safety techniques; don’t ski/snowboard to warm up. Warm up and stretch before any type of activity and cool down and stretch afterwards. Wear the right gear: seek professional advice when choosing or hiring equipment. Select equipment suited to your activity, skill level and size; wear clothing, including gloves that are waterproof and
breathe. Dress in layers so you can adjust them to your body temperature; make sure boots are fitted and comfortable, durable and waterproof, with thermal protection; protective headgear may prevent head injuries and is recommended for children; use skin and eye protection. Despite the cold conditions, UV is often high so use a suitable sunscreen and wear sunglasses or tinted goggles to protect against skin injuries such as sun and wind burn or eye irritation.
Learn good technique and practices: when skiing, hold your poles correctly. Put the strap on your wrist and then hold the ski pole so that the strap is included in your grip; when snowboarding, make sure your snowboard is attached to you by a leash, to prevent injuries to others on the slopes; be aware of the grading of ski-runs. Only ski on runs suited to your skill level. For further safety tips and resources on snow sports visit sma.org.au/resources-advice/.

Search at Mt Stirling
EMERGENCY services were surprised recently when they had to spend a Saturday night searching for a motorcyclist who ran out of petrol on Mt Stirling. The Carrum Downs man was riding his motorbike along Circuit Road (which is closed to traffic during winter) when he ran out of fuel. Police were contacted around 6pm on the Saturday night. A search was started and the 36-yearold man was located near Clear Hills Track just before 4am the next morning. Emergency services then helped the man and made their way down the mountain.

THE South Australians just love Mt Buller’s snow. Arriving in a ‘winter wonderland’, Pembroke Primary School’s Snowsports coordinator Mike Howard couldn’t believe the amount of snow. “This is my 12th year and it is the best snow I have ever seen at Mt Buller, and this is the biggest Pembroke team we have ever brought to Victoria,” he said. “Our results have been outstanding.”
A total of 67 Pembroke students came to ski and 38 of those competed in the SASKI races. Pembroke won Best Primary Girls School and Best Primary Boys School. Both the girls and boys teams won the gold, silver and bronze medals and in the individual competition, Pembroke girls took out gold, silver and bronze and the boys won the silver and bronze medals. Given their success this year, Mike said he was sure even more kids will want to join the Pembroke snow squad next year.

SAFE DRIVING: Chains are legally required to be carried - but make sure your have correctly fitting chains too, as that is critical to safe driving in often icy or snowy conditions.
Chains must be Police urge snow visitors to right fit for cars stay safe in the mountains
A SPATE of searches for missing people in the snow this season has prompted Victoria Police to remind people visiting the snow to take care. Sergeant Mark Fabris of Mansfield police said his ofďŹ cers had carried out ďŹ ve searches on Mt Buller so far this season. While at Mt Bogong police have conducted three searches for missing people this month.
NO OFF PISTE: When visiting snow resorts this season police advise to stay on the trails to avoid getting lost. PHOTO: Andrew Railton
It included last week’s tragic discovery of two snowboarders killed in an avalanche. Sgt Fabris said three young men skiing on Buller’s north side got disoriented and had to be rescued. All three were walked out after ofďŹ cers trekked in, after dark, and brought them back out. “If you do get lost the best
thing is ‘stay put’ and use a mobile phone to call for help, Sgt Fabris said. “Weather is unpredictable in the alpine regions, situations can change in minutes and often people are unfamiliar with the topography. If you are caught out overnight or in a bad storm then find a snowdrift, dig out a small cave but remember to keep the opening of that cav-
OUR Australian snow season and our mountain road conditions are vastly different to Europe and North America. This week I want to discuss why we need to be especially cautious when selecting the wheel options when purchasing a vehicle that we intend to use in our alpine areas. Here in Australia we experience a continual freeze and defrost cycle as a result of fluctuating temperatures on our mountain roads; while the roads in the northern hemisphere get cold, then freeze and stay continually frozen at temperatures below zero. The inconsistent temperatures of our roads mean we experience a lot of ice on top of the bitumen. Sometimes you can’t see whether the road ahead is icy or not... Call it black ice. This is why we Aussies end up having to drive with chains fitted to our vehicles. Desire for the best and car dealers ‘up selling’ can lead us to purchasing bigger sport pack wheels for our vehicles. Big wide wheels are great on hot/dry roads but are absolutely useless in the really wet or on snow and ice. These bigger sporty wheels sometimes leave no clearance between the inside edge of the tyre and the suspension. This makes it nearly impossible to fit standard fitting chains to our tyres.
ity away from the wind. “If you face the opening towards the wind then it acts as a ‘chiller’ and you could still freeze to death,â€? Sgt Fabris said. Police, ski patrol members, SES and search and rescue are all trained and equipped to ďŹ nd lost people, but the best advice is - don’t become a statistic – stay safe when in the snow ďŹ elds.

PETER HALEY: Co-owner of Bumps Snow Surf Skate In Europe where many of the preferred snow going vehicles are made or designed, drivers change their wheels and tyres for the winter. Specialised winter tyres on narrower wheels give better traction and have the clearance to fit chains should the need arise. Personally I have two sets of wheels and tyres, the narrower wheels with Nokian All Weather tyres are the winter option so I can fit very low profile Konig/ Thule chains to my rear wheels should the need arise. So when looking for your next vehicle please check the clearance for chains. Do not rely on the salesperson for the information, do some homework on the model of car you are looking at and call us at Bumps if you want to discuss your chain options. We offer an extensive range of chains from Konig and Thule.

Figgles a great alternative
Snow play in a day tour
FIGGLES (also known as Skiboards) are short shaped skis which are typically 80-130cm long. They are a great alternative to regular skiing. They use traditional bindings, so you can use your own ski boots with them. Figgles are used without poles, and are easily manoeuvred, allowing you to add a new dimension of freedom to your skiing. Figgles are available from Buller Sports, Duck Inn, George’s Ski Hire and Grimus Ski Hire.
IF you only have one day free to explore Mt Buller, then join a Snow Play in a Day tour and see the best of what this world-class resort has to offer. The tour includes a dedicated guide and access to a great range of experiences, providing you with the most exciting and breathtaking way to enjoy the mountain. Tour includes: a mountain guide; one-way scenic chairlift ride; set lunch; snow shoe hire and tour; and toboggan hire. For bookings and enquiries contact our friendly reservations team on 1800 BULLER (1800 285 537) or email reservations@mtbuller. com.au. * Bookings are required 1 day in advance.
Christmas week coming up JOIN us at Mt Buller for a White Christmas to remember. There’ll be special Christmas dinners, visits from Santa, kids’ activities and more. It’s all you want for Christmas and runs from August 3 to August 8. For enquiries call 57776077 or email info@mtbuller.com.au.
IT’S EASY: Snowshoeing is an easy way to experience the snow Stirling style each Saturday afternoon.
Mt Stirling offering more than cross country skiing MR STIRLING is a family mountain and a snow playfield for those who do not want the hustle and bustle and faster paced downhill skiing and boarding. Although offering some snowboarding facilities, Mt Stirling is a winter wonderland in a pristine and unspoiled natural bush setting. And for those who don’t even cross country ski, Mt Stirling offers leisurely Saturday afternoons exploring the trails on snow shoes.
Snow shoe tours are held every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm and includes shoe hire. Participants meet at TBJ ski school at 12.45pm where you might like to enjoy lunch in the bistro before setting off. If the snow is a bit thin down low, we will take a complimentary ride on the snow-rider shuttle service to the snowline. Walk to some of our mountain huts through towering Alpine Ash trees and mystical snowgum forest
returning to TBJ around 3.30pm for one of Barb’s complimentary afternoon Devonshire teas. All you have to do is bring along suitable footwear, snow boots or walking boots, wet weather jacket and warm clothing, gloves, a beanie and a water bottle. Get out and enjoy the fresh mountain air and have a little light exercise while taking in the exceptional beauty of Mt Stirling in winter.
Twilight skiing on Bourke Street TWILIGHT ski and snowboard under the stars is on every Wednesday and Saturday from mid-July through August on Mt Buller’s popular Bourke Street run. Watch the spectacular sunset across the mountains as you ski down the slopes. Twilight skiing will run between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. Tickets for twilight skiing are available from Buller Sports (and Saleyards before 3pm) for just $21. If you are purchasing an ‘after 3pm’ lift pass, on Wednesday or Saturday, you will also be able to take advantage of twilight skiing for no additional cost. Twilight skiing is subject to snow and weather conditions. For twilight skiing status please check with Buller Sports in store or on 57777883.
K2 women’s weekend ON August 2 and 3, the K2 Women’s Weekend will bring together snow loving ladies to sample the latest gear and share a memorable day at Mt Buller. With a women-only coaching team and a supportive, fun environment it’s a great way to pick up some tips while sliding on the best new gear from the team at K2. Why not make it a girls’ weekend and mix some bubbles and giggles with your turns. K2 Women’s Weekend includes: demos of the latest skis from K2; morning tea and seminar; bubbly lunch; guiding from expert instructors; apres drink. Places are limited and participants must be intermediate skiers or above. $135 for one day or $250 for the weekend. Contact Mt Buller information for details.
