SNOW IS FALLING:
MORE than 33cms of fresh snow had fallen on Mt Buller over Monday and Tuesday when local skier and boarder Mitch Reeves took to the slopes for the first time this season taking advantage of fresh snow and not too many people. Snow falls were expected over the next week. Some mountain folk were heard to say the snowfalls early in this week were the heaviest seen on the mountain in one dumping for many years. More than half a metre was forecast before the weekend which should bring loads of visitors to the mountain for a true start to what may yet be a great season. PHOTO: Andrew Railton

MARKET failure for alpine resort lodges and lease holders is on their doorstep, according to Victorian Snowsports Association (VSA) president Rob Anderson. Mr Anderson issued the warning last week in response to the announcement of massive increases in leases set by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith . “Mr Smith has stunned

Skiing body fearful of affordability, but minister says changes are needed, stop ‘scaremongering’
Victorian resorts’ ski clubs and flat owners with his decision to increase leasing charges by 30 per cent on Alpine Resorts Commission (ARC) and Victorian Snowsports AssociationlLeases,” Mr Anderson said. The 30 per cent increase, to be backdated to November 1, 2013, is the maximum permissible under the industry-wide ceiling level as set out in the ARC/VSA lease agreement.
Convenient Location
Many of the lease agreements affected were set in place in 1990 with a 24 year life and came up for review this year. The increase is payable in full in the first year, and not phased in by instalments as has been the case in the past, and is in addition to CPI increases. The decision was advised to the VSA last month with the minister citing advice taken

from the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council (ARCC). This is part of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council’s six year review on rental arrangements and was conducted through extensive consultation. The ARCC is largely made up of Alpine Resort Management Board (ARMBs) members from all Victorian ARMBs, who are appointed by
the minister, and are responsible for collecting leasing rates and charges. There is no alpine community representation on either ARCC or ARMBs. However, Minister Smith on Monday refuted the impact these changes will make. “This is scaremongering,” Mr Smith said. “A minority of sites are covered by an outdated agreement signed in 1990 that does not take in current market conditions. “For more than 24 years, a small number of alpine lodges have been protected by this agreement and have enjoyed cheaper rent. “In contrast the majority of alpine lodges have paid market rent, directly supporting the continued work of each resort,â€? he said. “These small modifications will ensure that there is a fairer price structure for all alpine resorts. “At Mount Buller, visitors during the snow season will see an average increase of less than $1 per day per bed, and rents at Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Baw Baw have actually decreased. “Any increase will be reinvested back into alpine resorts.â€? Mr Smith’s announcement came after concerted efforts on the part of Alpine Resorts Working Group (ARWG), a committee of the VSA and representing all resorts’ ratepayers and unit holders, to work with the government including providing it with an ARWG funded consultant’s report prepared by Ernst and Young. The Ernst and Young report showed that the affordability of accommodation has signiďŹ cantly reduced and recommended that ARMBs need more robust governance
The average club will close down LONG-TIME mountain skier and current president of Ski Club of Victoria, Suzie Batten, said one of the problems with the new leases will be the way in which they are setting the rent rates. “Properties are being valued on highest and best use and pricing the clubs out of the market, Ms Batten said. “The average club will have to shut down beds with this lease increase and many are being squeezed out of the market with global warming and no snow on one side, and clubs being valued at the same rate as privately owned apartments on the other, she said.
to clearly determine funding and expenditure. Leasing costs are levied on clubs whose sites are valued according to ‘highest and best use’, rather than ‘permitted use’. The report stated that “The study has concluded that the expiration of the ARC/VSA agreement is likely to lead to a further reduction in the affordability of accommodation in Victoria’s alpine resorts, particularly at not-for-proďŹ t entities. These entities will either need to signiďŹ cantly increase accommodation prices or withdraw accommodation. More generally not for proďŹ t entities operating outside the agreement will also need to increase accommodation prices to cover growing service charge costsâ€?. However, in a letter to Mr Anderson, Mr Smith states: “Securing and stabilising ARMB income and protecting
site holders from excessive cost increases are important to the future of the alpine resorts. This latter is being addressed through the implementation of the Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan 2012, most notably Action 33 towards achieving social and equity outcomes that we all seek. Mr Anderson said there remained a perception that ski clubs are for the well-off, whereas in fact they existed because they provide affordable accommodation for ski enthusiasts and families to use the resorts. “Recent industry data shows Victorian snow sports consumers are making shorter duration trips to resorts, heading overseas in increasing numbers for cheaper holidays, and not visiting resorts as regularly as they have in the past because of the high costs, he said. “The time has come for the
Victorian Government to ďŹ nd another model of resorts funding or there will be serious consequences for the industry, tourism and regional Victoria. “Market failure is on our doorstep.â€? ARWG chair John Aird said his committee had worked tirelessly in recent years to highlight ďŹ nancially struggling resort ratepayers, unit holders and small business. “We have tried to convince ARMBs and the ARCC that clubs have already cut costs to the bone and there is no room to accept increased rates and service charges levied by the RMBs,â€? Mr Aird said. “The government does not appear to understand the plight of the industry and the now serious consequences of further increasing costs of occupancy. “RMBs must reduce their costs of operation and halt increasing charges to site holders. “Site holders have cut their costs of outgoings that they can control, but the remaining leasing rental and service charges are increasing and now exceeding 40 per cent, have increased without regard to industry norms, simply cannot be funded and clubs and small business on the mountain are likely to fail,â€? he said.

WELCOME SNOW: As school holidays are approaching fast the first real snow falls of the season blanketed Mt Buller covering everything in white – a winter wonderland.
Wintry blast arrives at Mt Buller – and there’s more to come
MT BULLER has welcomed a cold blast of winter, with snow beginning to fall at the resort and sub-zero temperatures and persistent snow forecast for the coming days. Victoria is facing a series of cold fronts which are bringing icy temperatures, strong winds and heavy snow to the Alps right throughout the week.
The snow is the welcome sight for the snowfields, with school holidays set to start this weekend. Snow forecasters are predicting upwards of a metre of snow to fall at Mt Buller in the next seven days. Marketing and communications manager for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Gillian Dobson, is thrilled to see the snow.
NEW FOR SEASON 2014
“While Melburnians will shiver through this week, here at Mt Buller we’re continuing to do our snow dance as these ideal conditions bring us plenty of the white stuff,” Ms Dobson said. This fresh dump of snow and chilly temperatures ideal for snowmaking mean we can really start getting the season under way.” Ms Dobson said the resort
is preparing to welcome plenty of school holidaymakers to the resort from this weekend. “Mt Buller is an ideal destination for the school holidays, with plenty happening on and off the slopes to keep everyone busy. “With fresh snow and lots to do around the resort throughout the holidays, we’re feeling on top of the world here at Mt Buller.”

MT BULLER Resort and 4Site Waste Management introduced their ‘Green Waste Bin’ three years ago to help recycle more than 50 tonnes of waste food products produced during the winter season. Some 90 per cent of Mt Buller’s commercial food establishments participate in the Green Waste ‘Living Bin’ scheme which is reaping rich rewards. Food, fruit and vegetable scraps are collected in clear recycling bags placed inside green ‘food only’ buckets. All containers are supplied free of charge from RMB. Rob McDonald, 4Site manager, said that due to the success of the program, a new ‘on mountain’ composter has been installed and this year, every 24 hours, 200 kilos of waste will be turned into compost. “However, with this increased capacity we are keen to encourage more private lodge and apartment owners to get involved and contribute their green waste to our compost heap,” Rob said. Since Mt Buller implemented its Living Bin program in 2010, the resort has seen more than 80 tonnes
of organic waste removed and turned into compost instead of going to landfill. Mt Buller currently recycles 41 per cent of the remaining waste - an increase from 33 per cent in the year prior to the trial and the highest of any other alpine resort in Victoria. Mt Buller Mt Stirling environmental officer, Louise Perrin, said recently “the introduction of the organics management system at Mt Buller has not only seen a reduction of waste, but it has also resulted in an overall improvement in waste management practices across the board, with higher recycling rates in other areas also being recorded”. “The Living Bin project has helped to make a huge step towards zero waste for Mt Buller, and we look forward to getting even more on-mountain operators and guests involved in future years,” she said. Managers of Ajax Lodge, Michele and Stephen Morrice, have been keen supporters of the organic recycling and over the summer they added the nutrient rich Mt Buller compost to their Mansfield vegie garden. The result was a massive pumpkin which was proudly displayed inside their Mansfield café as part of their autumn harvest.

At the Sochi Winter Olympics this year, Belle finished in eighth position in the snowboard cross, the most successful snowboard cross result for Australia at the Games. She was also the only openly gay member of the Australian Olympic team in Sochi, and spoke out against Russia’s anti-gay laws. Dr Graetz said Belle has shown she shares beyondblue’s passion for taking a stand against discrimination. “Homophobia, like any form of discrimination, can cause long-term stress, which can lead to depression and anxiety,” Dr Graetz said. “Homophobia is never acceptable, and Belle has
shown courage in speaking out in difficult circumstances. “Not only is Belle proud to be gay, the 21-year-old has also shared her story of depression and anxiety, and of seeking support, in the hope of inspiring others to reach out when they are struggling. “Belle’s story sends a powerful message, particularly to young LGBTI people, that

IT was another big night for the Olympic Winter Institute and some of the returning Olympic competitors with the annual black tie event being held at The Chalet on Mt Buller. Billed as one of the OWI’s major fund-raisers more than 100 guests enjoyed the hospitality of the institute and Buller Sports, and mountain management. Special guests for the evening included Sochi Olympic competitors Anton Grimus, Brodie Summers, Cam Bolton, Katya Crema, Emily Bamford, Belle Brockoff and David Morris. All took part in question and answer segments telling of their personal and collective experiences at the February events. Sunday night was a celebration of not only the opening of the season, it was also a night to celebrate the achievements of David Morris who attained a silver medal at Sochi and all of his fellow Olympians. It was a celebration of Mt Buller’s athletes and it was said that the Sochi Olympics saw the most number of athletes from any single resort (Mt Buller) from across the world competing at an Olympics.
CEO GREETINGS: Mt Buller Mt Stirling management chief executive officer John Huber welcomed Olympians Brodie Summers (left) and Anton Grimus back to the mountain for the Olympic Winter Institute annual dinner.
In review of the Olympics the Aussie team achieved three medals – the best ever at a Winter Olympics. In addition to medals the team of 56 had 8 top 8; 10 top 10; fourths and fifths, all results they should be proud of. As an organisation OWI has undertaken a deep analysis of each of its programs to ensure that athletes can do better as it plans for the 2018 winter Olympics to be held at PyeongChang, South Korea. It was the question and answer segments that gave the audience the greatest insight into the athletes’ own achievements, each being asked about Sochi and their lives after the Olympics.
At the conclusion all six Olympians stood on the podium and answered questions from the audience. One poignant question was “Do you think Mt Buller would ever host an Olympic games?” Anton Grimus replied it would not be entirely impossible but maybe a pentathlon which Cam Bolton might take out, and David Morris said he would love to see the aerials return to Buller. He had spoken to competitors in aerials overseas and they all loved Mt Buller. During the evening two Olympic green jackets were auctioned along with a rare Sochi framed and signed poster – all funds going to OWI.

A BIG jump in the cost of sending students to the MansďŹ eld Secondary College (MSC) Annexe on Mt Buller is causing concern among some parents. They have formed ‘Parents with Altitude’ , and have drawn attention to why student fees went from $320 in 2013 to $1250 per child in 2014. MSC principal Tim Hall has explained that in 2012 and 2013, the school had access to a ‘specialisation grant’ of $50,000 to help offset costs, but that has now ended. “The grant was to establish the campus, with the expectation the program would be selffunded after that point,â€? he said. Mr Hall said the actual cost
per student is closer to $1400, so even at the $1250 cost there is a substantial discount. He said the MSC School Council had made it very clear that the Buller Annexe should not adversely impact on established programs at the school. “School council has been clear that the program should run under a ‘user pays’ model, Mr Hall said. “We could fund it from within the school resources and run it considerably cheaper, but the cost would mean an inability to run agribusiness, music, art, physics, ASBAs, etc - this is not a desirable outcome for school or community. “Some $1250 for a 10 week program makes it only $25 per day.
NEWS
Another issue of concern is the stipulation that those who attend the annexe must also attend a ‘specialist provider’ snow program. “The annexe needs to walk the line between the need to provide an educational program to all students living on the mountain and the need to promote our program as a package where athlete skills are developed, including both on-snow and off-snow outcomes,â€? Mr Hall explained. “This is the only context that the annexe is likely to receive funding for - we would not be supported as a ‘normal’ school up there with only 25 students, as there is a viable alternative in MansďŹ eld, at MSC.â€? The parents group had also
raised the issue of an advertising hoarding at Dump Corner, given to MSC to rent out to help defray costs. Mr Hall explained that Betta Home Living Mansfield had offered to rent out the board for 12 months at $15,000, but the space was only available from the Alpine Resorts Management Board for four months - due to a pre-existing contract - and Betta Home Living MansďŹ eld had agreed to pay $5000 for the four months. A spokesperson for the parents group said they were delighted by the generosity of Betta Home Living, and its principal Bill Lines, for taking up the ARMB offer, which would help defray student costs.

ward to some big changes this year. “We are very much looking forward to another bigger and better Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships in 2014,â€? Mr Speirs said. “ We h av e b e e n bu s y over summer improving areas around our Cross Country event planning with a dedicated technical delegate, as well as implementing new volunteer management systems into our online entry system. “Our Mogul events will see a top 10 ďŹ nal that will deliver an exciting show similar to our Ski and Snowboard Cross ďŹ nals format. “We believe that the event is the best of its type in the world and are committed to continually improving every aspect through surveys and stakeholder feedback,â€? By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY WINTER Olympian and silver medallist David Morris was just your average, everyday working man until, as he describes it, “40 seconds of fun” has brought him fame. “Once I was just a school teacher of PE and maths, teaching at an all-boys school, but now I am a celebrity,” he said at the Olympic Winter Institute dinner at The Chalet on June 8. David won silver in the aerials competition at this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He teaches year 7s and 8s and as he described it – ‘just an ordinary teacher with the same old problems that all teachers have in getting boys to understand’. “But now I have a silver medal in my hand, it seems I know much more, have more understanding, and what’s more the boys are more willing to listen to what I have to say.” David was discovered by former Olympian Kirstie Marshall when she walked into a gymnastics class where he was going through his own routine.
SILVER AS GOOD AS GOLD: Sochi Olympic silver medallist David Morris.
At 19 years old, David was offered by Kirstie to train him in aerials at a water jump outside of Melbourne. “Out of all the people in Australia, she chose me, the only boy, to train in aerials,” he said. She noticed the athleticism
and moves he made and asked him if he would consider competing at snow aerials. ”It all started there, that was 10 years ago,” David said. “I went to Sochi to compete – not thinking of actually winning.” He is the only male competi-
tor in the Australian Aerials team. To gain more graceful moves and to learn his twists and turns, already an accomplished gymnast, he also learns ballet and watches other ballet dancers to improve his skills. He said the aerials competition was a fun day and the bonus at the end was a medal. David now has not only returned to teaching, but also finds himself on the speaking circuit for the OWI and for himself – speaking at conferences as a motivational speaker. He finds it somewhat slightly amusing that he has gone from a humble teacher and gymnastics coach to being a highly sought after celebrity. And the future? Well David said he is taking 12 months off from the hectic pace of working and training in aerials. He will no doubt visit Mt Buller to get in a little ordinary skiing. “When I get that ‘fire in the belly feeling’ of it’s time to get back into training and have another go, then I will,” he said. “Hopefully I will be able to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics and go one better, next time bringing home gold.”
Helmets, Helmets, Helmets… HALEY’S VIEWS
Letter to the Editor PETER HALEY: Co-owner of Bumps Snow Surf Skate
I WRITE in relation to the many events and communities I visited throughout the Benalla electorate over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. I attended the opening of the Snow Season at Mt Buller on Saturday evening and Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain on Sunday. These openings highlighted the importance of Alpine Resorts and the high country to our local economy. That is why the Regional Growth Fund has contributed $300,000 to the construction of the Epic Mountain Bike Trail at Mt Buller and $100,000 to the development of an all year round play area at Dinner Plain. In addition around $6 million has been provided for
infrastructure upgrades at Mt Hotham. I am proud to be a part of the Victorian Coalition Government which is providing such strong support to the social and economic development of North East Victoria. Bill Sykes, MLA, Benalla
ARE you the odd one out who’s not wearing a helmet? Or if you have one when was the last time you updated it? My point is skiing/ snowboarding helmets do have a limited life. They are designed to protect us from serious head injury should we encounter a heavy impact. A helmet that has had a heavy knock may need to be replaced, just like a bike helmet does. An older helmet that may have a few dents on the outside or even a crack or slightly compressed foam lining should be retired. The next hard hit maybe the one when it fails to protect you adequately. Fit, not color or style is still the most important feature.
Huge range at Melb’s leading full service snowsports store. SHOP IN STORE: 481 GLENHUNTLY RD ELSTERNWICK
PROTECTION: Choose the right helmet for your head protection - and match it with goggles. A loose helmet may not protect you as well and you won’t want to wear one that is uncomfortable. Helmets are becoming a bit of a fashion statement too. I know a few who own several so that they can match
their outfit for the day. Your goggles need to fit with your helmet so I recommend that you have your goggles with you when trying to fit a new helmet or vice versa. Simply try a few different shapes until you find the one
that fits comfortably snug. Be aware that it only takes a little pressure to create a headache. At Bumps we have an extensive range. Ski/ride safely in control and above all have fun.

Hope for a good snow season
By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY
THERE may not have been any snow, but it didn’t deter Mt Buller staff and operators along with hundreds of visitors to the mountain celebrating the opening of the 2014 snow season on Saturday. Mt Buller Mt Stirling ARMB chief executive John Huber welcomed all to the mountain for another season along with chairman of the board, Jennifer Hutchison, and Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla). Mr Huber first outlined the changes, improvements and upgraded visitor facilities made to the resorts over the summer months. He encouraged all visitors to download the Mt Buller App and to go to the updated and revitalised website for the latest information on resort conditions. He said mountain management in conjunction with Buller Ski Lifts had continued to invest in snowmaking infrastructure – completed automation with the

north side and the automated snow guns which will deliver eight times the amount of snow previously made. He briefly outlined the improvements and expansion of the Village Square Plaza (formerly known as Cow Camp) which will greatly improve the visitor experience. He announced that some 54 lodges had now been operating on the mountain for more than 50 years and one (Ski Club of Victoria) had been established for 90 years. Presentation certificates for 50 years on the mountain were later made to representatives of seven ski lodges and the Ski Club of Victoria for its 90 years at the opening cocktail party. “As a resort we have a lot to be excited about and what Mother Nature is going to give to us in the way of snow, we really don’t know – that’s in the hands of the gods,” Mr Huber said. Ms Hutchison then thanked all, including five of the Winter Olympic team for joining the board, mountain staff and opera-
tors to mark the start of another winter. “I can’t start this winter without acknowledging that 2013 was a tough one,” she said. “2014 might be another tough one but it might be a bumper, and after having a little chat today with David Speers, research back to 1972 shows that every time there has been a record warm during May there has been a bumper snow season to follow. “That’ll do me,” she said. “These are the times in which we live, we embrace them, they are what they are,” Ms Hutchison said. “Taking the Oprah Winfrey philosophy of life – this much I know to be true – Mt Buller and Mt Stirling are so many things out and beyond snow biz, we are about family, and fun and fellowship and food and on-snow activities and off-snow activities, about skiing and boarding and hiking and biking and music and friends.” In toasting the opening of the season she declared “Here’s to a successful winter 2014.”

Family friendly Spurs at the top of Bonza UNDER new management this year Spurs Café Mt Buller is friendlier, more comfortable and still offers season’s pass holders their discounts. Jeanette and Jeff Whyte, former owners of the Jamieson Brewery, have taken on the leasehold of Spurs this season.
Experienced in the hospitality industry the Whytes are excited about their new venture and particularly now that snow has arrived. Jeanette said Spurs is the ideal place for families to meet as it is next to the Bonza Chairlift on North Side and is where the
‘beginners’ gather to learn to ski and snowboard. “At the top of Bonza kids and parents can make this their base on North Side,” she said. “We are offering fast comfort food as well as a range of hearty meals. “Visitors to the mountain can
come in and snack or sit and relax in the big picture window, take in the fabulous views across the mountains and ski slope, but at the same time enjoy the warmth and comfort that Spurs offers.” Spurs can also offer lockers for hire to secure backpacks etc for day trippers and has the ability
for visitors to use their B-Tag and Snowdough cards – a great saving on kids in particular having to carry cash. Ski into Spurs and say hello to Jeanette and Jeff and their friendly staff.

THE MansďŹ eld Regional Produce Store is a popular stopover for many coffee lovers, skiers and snowboarders on their way to and from Mt Buller and has received a TripAdvisor CertiďŹ cate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor, and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. “Winning the TripAdvisor CertiďŹ cate of Excellence is a real source of pride for our team at The Produce Store and we’d like to thank all of our guests who took the time to complete an online review,â€? said proprietor Dean Belle.
“Hospitality in Mansfield is a very dynamic and competitive industry; there is no greater seal of approval than being recognised by our customers. “With the TripAdvisor CertiďŹ cate of Excellence based on customer reviews, even with the odd ‘constructive criticism’, the accolade is a remarkable vote of conďŹ dence in our business and our continued commitment to excellence.â€? Establishments awarded the Certificate of Excellence are located all over the world and represent the upper echelon of businesses listed on the renowned travel website. Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day happening on July 4 JULY 4 will not only mark the celebrations for the United States’ Independence Day, but will also commemorate the 15th Ski and Golf Day on Mt Buller and Mansfield, and Mark Adams’ sponsorship over the past seven years. What a great day for those who love to speed race down Bourke Street, but also like their game of golf. The day kicks off with teams racing against the clock to get from the top to the bottom of Bourke Street – watched and cheered on by spectators, family and friends.
After a morning on the snow it is then off to Mansfield Golf Club for lunch and a spot of Ambrose golf during the afternoon. The day finishes with presentations. The night before the big event the annual Mark Adams dinner/Calcutta will be held on Mt Buller which adds to the fundraising for this event. Held each year as a fundraiser, proceeds specifically go to Mansfield’s local schools to help get kids into the ski programs. Mark Adams said recently this was a great fun day for all sports
people and it helped out many primary and secondary school kids whose families could not afford to include them into the ski sports programs. “Last year this day raised in excess of $21,000 towards local schools’ ski programs, he said. Over the past 15 years that the program has been running more than $200,000 has been raised and donated to local schools. Mark took over the major sponsorship of this event some seven years ago and has seen it grow in that time.

Mt Buller’s snow gods THEY are the unsung heroes of the mountain, the Mt Buller snowmakers. Eight snowmakers, under the direction of supervisors, Dion and Paul, start preparing the slopes in early June, for the real stuff. They set the guns, create the base and most importantly during the season, make sure that the really popular runs are constantly topped up after heavy usage. The dedicated Mt Buller snowmaking team are young, enthusiastic and unbelievably well qualified and experienced. I caught up with them just before the June long weekend, when they were actually out in daylight enjoying a bit of sun. It turns out that two of our Mt Buller
ON THE SLOPES WITH LIZ WEBB snowmakers are Olympic champions – in snowmaking. Scott Fisher, a New Zealander, whose love of snowboarding and snowmaking, took him to the USA and Tiffany Gleeson, a native of Tahoe, USA were snowmakers in Sochi for the Olympic Games. Twelve foreign snowmakers were brought in to help 12 Russian snowmakers create the amazing race courses and tracks for the biggest Winter Olympics ever staged. “Sochi was easy, it was all computer driven,” said Tiffany and Scott. “There were more than 400 fully automated snow guns and a control

room that looked like a space ship, but you know what - we prefer making snow at Mt Buller where it is a much more hands on job. “Our experience and knowledge are tested and there is a variety of equipment which we place and operate so we actually get the satisfaction of knowing that we have created snow in all the right places.” Other Mt Buller snowmakers include Aaron Webb from Vermont, New Zealand, Ben Dixon, Eamon Tomlin from Melbourne and Taswegian, Jock Gunn, who is experiencing his first year of snowmaking on Buller. So when you hear our snow guns start up in the middle of the night, spare a thought for this talented team out there, creating your winter wonderland.
SNOW WAVE is returning to Mansfield and Mt Buller and has expanded this year with more entertainers and more venues. This annual event will take place in five venues over four days and showcases up and coming young talent. Presented by Alex Burton, Snow Wave this year will feature Danielle Rancie and Chris and Pete Doe (The Twins) - from X Factor fame. Mr Burton said Danielle Rancie is known to some music fans already having toured with the Tamworth Travelling Show, while Chris and Pete Doe have local connections with family living at Bonnie Doon. The concerts will kick off on Thursday night at the Bonnie Bar in Bonnie Doon with a ‘pot and pizza’ night (free entry), on Friday night for the first time the gig will be held at the Range View Restaurant at the Mansfield Golf Club. Mt Buller Village on Saturday, July 19 will see Danielle Rancie and Chris and Pete Doe entertain from the Village Square stage from 1pm. Then it will be on to The Tolmie Tavern at night starting at 8pm with the addition of Meghan Jones and Davey Sampson taking centre stage. The Snow Wave event finishes up at the Hunt Club Hotel, Merrijig on Sunday, July 20 from 5pm. During Sunday song writer workshops will be held with Mansfield’s young talented singers and songwriters. Local talent to perform during the concerts include Victoria and Courtney, Clara and Tom, Arron Scale and Melanie Taylor, Davey Sampson, Meghan Jones, Pheobe Parsons and Denver and Genna, Liam, Darcy and Fergus and returning to Mansfield TJ Alcaniz. Mr Burton said this is a chance for all young talent to perform in front of live audiences and for local people to come out and support this talent. For further information on the Snow Wave concerts you can email Alex Burton at ambermicproductions@gmail.com.
THE Banff Mountain Film Festival will return to Mt Buller for the sixth year running on Saturday, June 28, and is set to wow crowds again with another series of aweinspiring films. Taking in more than 275 communities in 30 countries across the globe, the tour features a collection of films inspired by mountain culture - from skiing, snowboarding and ice-climbing to BASE jumping, mountain biking and the alpine environment. The tour is produced by Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre in Canada, an organisation that promotes understanding, appreciation and education on the world’s mountain areas. The festival started in 1976, and each year a selection of the best films are chosen to tour the world. Mt Buller is the only Australian snow resort to host the festival, at the resort’s 180-seat cinema. Marketing and communications manager for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management,
Gillian Dobson, said the festival is always a great night. “The Banff Mountain Film Festival is one of our favorite events on the Mt Buller calendar, and has become a really popular event with locals and visitors alike – and for good reason,” Gillian said. Films will be shown at the Mt Buller Cinema this Saturday, June 28 at 7pm.
Further information on the event as well as accommodation options can be found by visiting mtbuller.com.au. Tickets are $30 (including resort entry for the evening) and are now available for purchase from the Mt Buller Post Office at Alpine Central or online at www.banffaustralia. com.au (online purchases attract a $2.79 booking fee).

World-class acts on top of the world
MT BULLER has upped the ante this year with a jampacked calendar of world-class entertainment confirmed for the 2014 snow season. Visitors will see the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival return for its sixth year, as well as a range of live bands and DJs throughout venues in the resort and international performances on the Village Square stage. The Banff Mountain Film Festival, the most prestigious international film competition, will return to Mt Buller for the sixth year on Saturday, June 28. The festival will take in more than 275 communities in 30 countries across the globe, and feature a collection of ďŹ lms inspired by mountain culture, sports and the environment. The iconic Kooroora Hotel will play host to big name acts throughout the snow season including ARIA award winning Sneaky Sound System, Aussie hip hop artists ILLY and Bliss N Eso, Triple J ‘Unearthed’ winners StoneďŹ eld, and indie rockers Kingswood, just to name a few.

July and August will see the Village Square stage alive with rocking tunes by local DJs and bands, salsa dancing classes and even a breakdancing performance when Kings Only Crew return after their huge success at Mt Buller in 2013. Director of marketing, sales and business development for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Amber Gardner, is looking forward to the mountain coming alive with the talent
secured for the 2014 season. “Here at Mt Buller we’re always striving to give our visitors the best experience possible both on and off the slopes, and this snow season offers more than ever with an incredible line up of music, events and more, she said. “Mt Buller has always been famous for its village atmosphere and nightlife, but this season’s event calendar is arguably the best yet and means
there’s always something happening to keep you entertained. “There are some great holiday packages available throughout the winter, offering value for money and the convenience of staying right in the Village close to all of the action. Further information on events and entertainment at Mt Buller as well as accommodation options can be found by visiting mtbuller.com.au.
KIDS on holidays at Mt Buller can join in an additional activity with a ďŹ rst time holiday program ‘Bricks 4 Kidz’. Bricks 4 Kidz is an educational children’s program, aimed at ages 3 to 13, whose motto is “we learn, we build, we play with‌..LEGO Bricksâ€?. The program was founded in the United States in 2009 by Michelle Cote, who has designed all of the proprietary model plans using her architecture background. Since then Bricks 4 Kidz has grown to become the number one Children’s Enrichment Franchise (as ranked by Entrepreneur Magazine) with more than 550 franchises in 27 countries. New to Australia in 2014, Bricks 4 Kidz has been taken up by local MansďŹ eld operators Joanne O’Brien and Mandy Kynnersley. With their youngest children soon to be starting school and kinder, the two local mums were looking to return to the workforce “but we wanted to do something that was fun and motivatingâ€?.
After researching the franchise industry, Jo discovered the Bricks 4 Kidz phenomenon and knew it was the right ďŹ t. Combining Kynnersley and O’Brien, KynOBi Learning Pty Ltd was born and the two were soon off to the home of Bricks 4 Kidz, Florida USA, to complete their training and become the Master Franchisee for Victoria. The overall goal is to provide a fun hands-on learning activity for the children where problem solving skills, teamwork, and self-esteem are emphasised and enhanced. “Bricks 4 Kidz offers an exciting opportunity for the children of Victoria,â€? said Joanne. Bricks 4 Kidz will be running a holiday program over the term 2 school holidays on Mt Buller at Alpine Central and Preschool classes and After School classes are scheduled to commence in term 3 in MansďŹ eld. For more information or to enrol visit www.bricks4kidzaustralia.com.au/ victoria-melbourne-mansďŹ eld, or contact kynobi@ bricks4kidz.com.

Offered for private sale the ďŹ rst time ever, this apartment has been thoughtfully created and designed over several multi levels totalling 281sqm (30sq) plus four generous and private balconies of a further 85sqm. This corner apartment holds prime position and includes all impeccable furnishings. There are five large bedrooms and ďŹ ve bathrooms with three master bedrooms all with en-suites. The main master bedroom wing has a double spa and twin basin with separate toilet. The sumptuous living room offers large windows and views to the north, open ďŹ replace with architect design wood storage plus built-in bar with fridge and sink.
WE often hear people on the mountain referring to their apartment building as a ‘Body Corporate’ or ‘Owners Corporation’. These terms mean the same thing. However, Alpine apartment buildings (mostly) are not Owners Corporations under the law. This means Alpine apartment managers are not required to adhere to the obligations provided by each state’s Owners Corporation legislation. It may also mean that owners of individual apartments are not required to comply with legislative controls. In practice, Alpine apartments behave like
Owners Corporations. Similar obligations that are imposed on Owners Corporations by statute are imposed on Alpine companies (often created for the sole purpose of holding the Head Lease and managing the apartment building) by the Company Constitution or Apartment Rules. So, if you ever have a Body Corporate issue, don’t be fooled into heading for your state’s Strata or Owners Corporation legislations. We can advise or assist with enquiries or disputes concerning alpine apartments. Written by Dan Flynn, Partner and Tess Hauser, Solicitor - TressCox Lawyers

The building is currently owned by local Mansfield couple Jen Hutchison and Graeme Clifford and has been extensively renovated and refurnished as a comfortable lodge capable of accommodating 12 to 14 people. The reďŹ t included hydronic heating throughout the building, a new hot water system and the property is being sold ‘walk in–walk out’ with a full complement of furniture, linen, crockery and cookware, etc. The lodge would suit a family or group, a small ‘ski club’ of like-minded individuals or any other ski enthusiasts wanting to take advantage of Japan’s spectacular powder snow without the expense involved in the commercial package deals. There are cheaper properties available; but there is not a better option in terms of ready to use, super warm and comfortable, fully equipped lodge sized accommodation anywhere in the Niseko central area. For further details, check our website at tanukilodge.com or call Graeme Clifford on 0481 399 398 or 5777 3025.
Buy yourself a reliable Japan ski experience
WITH global warming and the resultant shrinking of the Australian ski season, an opportunity has arisen to enjoy reliable four month long winters with regular 20 metre annual snow falls at a very affordable price. Tanuki Lodge was built around 30 years ago by Japanese craftsmen at the height of the last economic boom. Solidly constructed, it was probably built as a summer holiday home on Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, the house is about 5km from Niseko town and 20 minutes’ drive from the Australian-dominated resort enclave of Grand Hirafu. It is located in a forested estate, fronting a pristine mountain stream, with glimpses of the nearby ski hills at Moiwa, Annupuri and Niseko Village and also close to the backwoods ski areas of Chisenpuri and Iwanupuri. Right in the heart of all the best skiing action and far enough from the Ozzie rabble to be a true Japanese experience.
