Sixty one years of interschools

MT BULLER welcomed over 200 schools from across Victoria for the 61st annual Subaru Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships recently. The resort turned on ideal snow conditions - some of the best seen since 2004 with deep cover all over the mountain and race courses in superb shape for young athletes to test their skills in a lively week of competition

and great sportsmanship. Close to 3000 students competed, from juniors through to Division 1 athletes – some of who are on a path towards Winter Olympic competition. The Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships were ďŹ rst staged in 1958 at Mt Buller.

The ďŹ rst schools to compete were Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College. Since the early days of 1958, the Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships (or Interschools) have grown to become one of the premier school sporting competitions

in Victoria. Over 180 schools compete annually in the event held at Mt Buller. In recent years there have been just under 6000 entries in the event across nine disciplines. A far cry from the ďŹ rst Interschools, which consisted of four boys from Melbourne

Grammar School and four boys from Scotch College competing in an Alpine Giant Slalom event. Today, competitors have the choice of Alpine Giant Slalom, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Ski Cross, Moguls, Cross Country Classical, Cross Country Freestyle Relay, Slopestyle Ski and Slopestyle Snowboard.

COLLISION: A skier and a wombat collided at Mt Buller recently, when Victorian Interschool skier Josh Hamilton was sent flying by a four legged creature. Luckily for Josh, his friend James Gardiner filmed what happened – or no one would have believed the story. The wombat is a local resident and is understood not to be a keen skier.

Local police disappointed by weekend operation

MORE than 70 people have been caught speeding over the weekend, with local police saying they were disappointed by the result. The operation was conducted by the MansďŹ eld Highway Patrol, targeting the Mount Buller area. Some 42 people were caught travelling over the speed limit on

Saturday, with a further 29 on the Sunday. Of the 71 detections, 22 were travelling at speeds that will now involve a loss of licence. A Mont Albert man had his Subaru impounded after being caught driving at 148km/h in the 100km/h zone on Mount Buller Road. Another man was caught

speeding twice in one day, ďŹ rst travelling to Mount Buller and then again when returning to Melbourne. Other offences included seatbelt infringements, defect notices and unsafe vehicles. Sergeant Martin McLachlan, from Mansfield Highway Patrol, said the majority of those caught were travel-

ling to the snow from Melbourne. “A trip to the snowďŹ elds gets pretty expensive when you’re adding a speeding ďŹ ne of a couple of hundred dollars to it,â€? he said. “There’s no reason to rush, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the roads and local conditions. “It’s just not worth losing your licence, your car or your life.â€?

Earthquake recorded in Mansfield A SLIGHT tremor was recorded in Mansfield, Merrijig and Mount Buller last Tuesday when a 2.9 magnitude quake shook homes – albeit softly. Akin to a large gust of wind, or the rumble of a garbage truck at 5am, the quake occurred at a depth of around 10km – at about the same time most tradies were polishing off their first egg and bacon roll 6.20am. Labourer Carl Briggs, travelling to work at the time of the quake, said the event was proof his $8000 suspension kit, recently installed on his Ford Ranger, was worth the money. “My wife told me not to buy those springs – what would she know, Carl said.

SHOCKED: A brief 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Mansfield, Merrijig and Mount Buller last week – leaving residents to wonder if the garbage trucks were calling early, or if it was time to prepare the emergency bunker. “I didn’t even feel that quake – I bet every Hilux owner in town did. It is not the first time North East Victoria has felt the earth move – a 3.2 magnitude tremor occurred in Benalla in 2013, and Mt Beauty was the epicentre for a 2.6 magnitude quake in 2007.

The most notable tremor in the last decade was when Melbourne was, slightly, shaken up by the aftershocks of a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Moe in 2012. Unfortunately, the quake did not cause any major damage to the Federation Square building.

Best snow since 2004 Ű THE sound of hooting and hollering skiers and boarders was echoing down the valley last week following massive snowfalls. More than 100cm has fallen on Mt Buller in August, and the quality of the skiing and boarding is at a high. The snow depth records are getting close to the incredible winter that was 2004 – with 2018 officially the best snow in 10 years. All the lifts are open and the

mountain is blanketed top to bottom with an excellent deep cover. Runs on the northern slopes are open and deep. “These conditions are sensational and it’s wonderful to see happy guests skiing the entire mountain top to bottom right now,” Buller Ski Lifts general manager, Laurie Blampied, said. “Runs that sometimes don’t get open are currently reporting excellent cover so it’s a

special season and one for the memory banks. “We are seeing strong forward bookings for lift passes and accommodation as people are reassured of great skiing and boarding into spring. “It’s great to have such confidence for local businesses and such great snow quality for our guests.” There are still limited $90 lift passes available online for August and

great deals for September including Kids Stay Free at many accommodation providers. For more information, head to the Mt Buller website.

61 years of interschools

From page 1

One of the great things about the event is not just the performances and improvement in skills of all the athletes involved, it is the friendly spirit of competition and support between the racers, all from competing schools. Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School Essendon first sent two teams to compete in the Interschools in 1993. Since then interest in the event has increased and this year the school had 14 competitors compete across three divisions. “It’s great that all ages and abilities can participate in the events across a range of disciplines,” said Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School teacher Vicki Huban. “It offers an opportunity for all students and it’s also a lot of fun.” Mansfield local Dan Friday, a member of Mt Buller Race Club, and student at Mansfield Secondary College had a cracking day, taking out 2nd in the Div 3 Alpine, 2nd in the Fic 3 Skier Cross and 3rd in the Div 3 Slopestyle. “The Friday family saddled up for the emotional roller coaster that is the Victorian Interschools for the 10th time this year,” said Dan’s father Euan Friday. “There is something quite incredible about this event and its capacity to generate emotional intensity. “Fortunately, this year there were a lot more highs than lows for us. “But there was also the anguish of watching kids disappointed by the mistakes that cost them. “But, that’s snow sports – you only get one chance, and there are some powerful life lessons in that. “Once again, the organisers and mountain staff have done an incredible job to host what truly must be a huge logistical challenge. “Thousands of kids and dozens of events that all seem to run pretty much without a hitch. “And this year, Mt Buller really turned it on with the best conditions I can honestly remember. “With that sort of skiing on offer, just spectating was a real challenge this time around.”

DAYS GONE BEFORE: The Whit pictured in the 1950s.

Mt Buller and its clubs date back to the 1940s

FIRST ski trips to Mt Buller date back to 1924. Clubs followed some years later. The Ski Club of Victoria set up in the late 1940s; their lodge was known as the Ivor Whittaker Memorial Lodge, and was established on the side of Bourke St ski run. At around the same time the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) club lodge was established between Horse Hill and One Tree Hill. The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) was also established in the vicinity of the Skating Rink in this same era. Ski clubs quickly became the backbone of skiing on Mt Buller. The Mount Buller Recreation Reserve Committee - established in 1948 - had the job to allocate sites for club lodges. Twenty acres were under its control. Within 12 months of its formation, the committee

notified the Forests Commission that it may need to expand its area of operation to prevent overcrowding of the Cow Camp site - now the location of the Mt Buller Day Visitor Centre. At that first meeting, seven sites were allocated. They were: z The Australian Women’s Ski Club; z Chamois Club of Australia; z Melbourne Walking Club; z Monsanto Ski Club; z University Ski Club; z Youth Hostel Association; and z The Australian Postal Institute. Six months later, in 1949, the Lazy Eight Ski Club,

Omega Ski Club and Ullr Ski Club were allocated sites Yurredla Ski Club followed soon after. In these early days, clubs had to have a minimum 25 members and club buildings had to be a minimum of 450 square feet. Although it was the responsibility of the Recreation Reserve Committee to regulate and control development on Mt Buller, in reality it was quite ineffective. Demand for club sites continued and in the mid1950s a further sub-division was approved. The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were the boom times for clubs, but the changing face of society in the 1980s saw the strong endure and the others unable to meet the demands placed on them. In 1955 the Victorian Ski Association was formed and became the voice for all Victorian ski clubs. Source: Mt Buller The Story of a Mountain.

From school to the summit By BILLIE LEATHAM, MANSFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL

AT MansďŹ eld Primary School, the School to Summit grade 4 ski program has begun. Every Friday for four weeks, 54 grade 4 students head up to Mt Stirling for their cross country ski lesson, each week becoming more conďŹ dent and learning techniques for cross country skiing. It’s a big day for students, leaving school at 9am and returning from the mountain by 3.30pm.

FUN: Pictured are (from left) Philip Manoglou, Elsie Leatham, Amelia Stevenson and Annie Foots having a ball hopping around on their skis, while Naomi Hall and Addi Wadsworth ski ahead of the pack.

As part of the School to Summit program, the grade 4 students will experience Mt Stirling during three different seasons. The students were fortunate enough to experience hiking on Stirling in autumn (term 1), then cross country skiing during winter (term 3) and will be heading back to Stirling for their camp in spring (term 4). The School to Summit program builds our students’ resilience, conďŹ dence and understanding of our amazing local environment.

Crowd gather for Buller Wide

MT Buller locals and visitors gathered to celebrate photographer Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington’s latest exhibition Buller Wide last Saturday night at Alpine Central, Mt Buller. The exhibition pays homage to Mt Buller and the crowd revelled over the diverse collec-

tion of large scale photographic prints showing the mountain in her many moods and from some unique angles. “In different light, at a different time of day or from a different viewpoint Mt Buller can often surprise us,” said Harrington. Having had the privilege to visit

many mountain resorts around the world throughout his career, Tony Harrington explained what brings him back to Buller and why he takes pleasure in photographing its many moods. “Mt Buller is truly a unique resort in that it has stunning 360 degree views of the surrounding mountain

ranges,” Harrington explained. “The mountain is always changing and there are always new ways to see it. “I think that’s what we all love about this place. “I hope there is a little something in this exhibition for everyone.” The exhibition will remain on

display at Alpine Central, Mt Buller this September. Entry to the exhibition is free and all images are available for purchase. For more information visit www. harroart.com or drop it to visit Tony in The Photo Shop and Rip Curl store in the village at Mt Buller.

The boom season on Buller, however, has been surpassed by that experienced on Mt Stirling – with a whopping 68 per cent increase in total visitor numbers. In the week ending August 19, 1119 people headed to Stirling – slightly down on the same week last year but up by some 700 visitors in 2016.

Year to date ďŹ gures show an increase of almost 3500 people visiting the cross country cousin of Buller. Anecdotal evidence suggests a rise in the interest of snow shoeing has led to increased visitor numbers, as opposed to increased cross country skiing activity.

NEXT time you’re coming in from a day on the slopes with your mates on Buller, wow them with these fun facts about snow: 1. Snowflakes aren’t the only form of snow - snow can also precipitate as graupel or sleet. The cloud droplets group together to form a soft, lumpy mass. Sleet, on the other hand, consists of drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice as they fall from the sky. 2. The largest snowflake was 15 inches wide - these large snowflakes were observed during a snowstorm in January 1887 in the USA. 3. Snow is translucent, not white - like the ice particles it’s made up of, it is actually colourless. 4. Igloos can be more than 37 degrees warmer inside than outside - they’re warmed entirely by body heat. 5. The largest snowball fight on record took place in Seattle - exactly 5834 snow fighters came together to exchange frozen barrages to create the largest snowball fight in the world on January 12, 2013. 6. The Australian Alps, or Snowy Mountains as they are also known, receive more snow than Switzerland. 7. About 800,000 Australians ski and snowboard in Australia each year; 90,000 of us head to New Zealand and another 100,000 are estimated to also head elsewhere overseas each northern season. 8. Norwegian Anders Backe holds the Guinness World Record as the fastest backwards skier in the world, clocking up 79.97 miles per hour (about 129 kilometres per hour) skiing ‘switch’ on twin tips earlier this year. 9. Australia’s Michael Milton is officially the fastest disabled man on skis in the world. He recorded 213.65 kilometres per hour in 2006. 10. The average snowflake is made up of 180 billion molecules of water.

Grab a bargain for 2019 THE Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Management Board has decided to celebrate the fabulous 2018 season by announcing the introduction of early-bird resort entry season passes for 2019, which are valid from September 1, 2018 all the way through to the end of the 2019 snow season. Mt Buller and Mt Stirling chief executive officer Mark Bennetts said that the resort is continuing to make skiing and boarding as affordable as possible for those who love to regularly visit the two mountains. We’re responding to feedback from our regular visitors, including Mansfield Shire residents, those with holiday houses within the shire, those who live just outside the shire, and those who purchase lift tickets for the whole season, he said. Resort entry season passes allow visitors an unlimited number of day and overnight visits to both mountains each season. Passes for 2019 will be on sale from Friday, August 31 for only $450, which is 10 per cent below the full 2018 price. These passes are valid from September 1 - October 7, 2018 and for the entire 2019 season. “We’ve decided to replace the resort entry discount for Mansfield Shire residents with an offer that recognises our wide range of regular visitors. “This will align with the earlybird Buller Ski Lift passes, which means everyone can plan for 2019 right now, save money, save time, and start enjoying the benefits this spring, Mark Bennetts said. Resort entry and lift ticket season passes are available online at mtbuller.com.au from 4pm Friday, August 31 until October 31, 2018. Passes are not transferable. With the huge amount of snow on the ground, Mt Buller will continue operating through the Term 3 school holidays before wrapping up the season on October 7. For more information contact Katie Bowker at katie.bowker@ mtbuller.com.au or by calling 5777 6077.

Elite free-riders take on Buller

BULLER X blazed onto the Australian freeride scene in September 2017, when 16 elite skiers and boarders from around the country took on the challenge of Mt Buller’s steep and treacherous chutes in a unique big mountain competition. This year, the event organiser Tony Harrington intends to add an international avour to the event inviting a handful of top-notch internationals to try their skills down under. The line-up remains small and will be hand-picked with a total of 10 skiers and 10 boarders chosen to compete in the 2018 event with automatic entry given to the top two placed skiers and snowboarders from 2017. Last year’s winners Coen BennieFaull and Nate Johnstone earned the distinction of ďŹ lming with the acclaimed adventure and action production house Teton Gravity Research in the majestic Teton Range at Jackson Hole Wyoming. This year they defend their title along with second placegetters Australian snowboarder Ryan Tiene and skier Edward Casey.

ON THE SHRED: Ben Murphy carving up the chute last year.

“The one-day event is an incredible display of Australia’s rich freeride talent,â€? said event founder and director Tony “Harroâ€? Harrington. As incomparable as it is challenging, Buller X only goes ahead if and when the conditions align for the athletes to ski and ride the steep, technical course. The Mt Buller chutes are daunting, steep, narrow and unforgiving. It is only when good quality cover, sufďŹ cient snowpack and

bluebird weather conditions all come together that the event gets the “green lightâ€? to be called on, similar to a big wave competition. International skiers and boarders can submit an application for consideration to compete by emailing ride@bullerx.com.au. The ďŹ nal line up of chosen athletes will be announced on the Buller X event website and social channels along with a fortnightly prize draw for our Buller X fans, thanks to generous event sponsors.
