A ‘tonne’ of work in Triton Challenge

Ŷ A TOUGHER LOOK: It is only the beginning with the latest Mitsubishi Triton light truck.

By DEREK OGDEN – Dual Cab, taking in the function of a pick-up truck with the comfort of an SUV; Club Cab, skewed more to commercial use with double doors and space behind the front seats; and Single Cab, with the capacity for a long cargo tray and two seats resistant to dirt and hard wear. There is a choice of two engines - a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and similar-size petrol engine. A new six-speed automatic transmission is now available on diesel models. Two and fourwheel drive systems are offered across the range. Prices start at $22,490 for the entry-level 4X2 GLX Single Cab Chassis 2.4-litre petrol

manual, the 4x4 GLX Club Cab Chassis 2.4L diesel manual comes in at $35,490 and the 4x4 GLS Premium 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto tops off the range at $51,990. All are plus on-road costs. On test was the 4x4 GLX 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto, costing $39,990. STYLING For the new Triton, Mitsubishi has taken a leaf out of the American pick-up truck book (Ram etc) and adapted it to the company’s Dynamic Shield concept. Chrome is used to emphasise the power and toughness of the vehicle, while bonnet height and high positioning of the lamps reinforce the imposing look. On a practical note, the headlamps and fog

lamps are more than 700 mm above ground, making them less vulnerable to water damage or stones thrown up from other vehicles. The rear lamp layout runs the full height of the bed and into the sides to accent width and depth of the cargo bed. Tail lamps are distinctive enough to identify the new Triton at a glance. INTERIOR Inside the double cab the black/grey interior has been upgraded to a sportier, higher-quality look monotone colour scheme. Soft-touch areas and contrasting stitching improve the look and feel to the driver’s hand. Ŷ Continued page 2 21d13123-v45

THE Triton has carried the weight of Mitsubishi light truck expectations for more than 40 years, and with the model year ’19 range, there’s no sign of them being offloaded any time soon. As I write this the Triton lies in overall third spot on the vehicle sales charts in Australia. Mitsubishi Australia is keen to keep its place in a weakened vehicle market, with the current model Triton, it says, combining the pick-up truck with passenger car levels of comfort for private and commercial purposes. It carries over, and sees an evolution in, its Sport Utility Truck, with the durability required in commercial use and comfort and ride sought in private use. The new Triton comes in three body styles

Ŷ Shape of Haval H2 is neat and tidy, but doesn't really breaks any new ground.

Haval H2 chasing more sales CHINESE car maker Haval hasn’t had a lot of success in the Australian sales race with its smallest SUV, the Haval H2. So has begun a marketing campaign that sees price drops, added equipment and name changes to the model lineup. The H2 entry model’s title has been changed from MT to City. Pricing is extremely sharp, with the six-speed manual offered at just $19,990 driveaway. The six-speed automatic has a recommended retail just $1000 more, that is $20,990 driveaway. Standard features include 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and start, privacy glass, electric windows, Bluetooth, tyre pressure monitor-

By EWAN KENNEDY ing and an electro-chromatic rear view mirror. Haval H2 City, like the others in the range, is powered by a four-cylinder 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine producing 110 kW / 210 Nm. It drives the front wheels (the previous AWD system is no longer offered in Australia). Importantly, the Haval H2 has a five-star Australasian (ANCAP) safety rating. The other two variants in the Haval H2, the Premium and Luxury, both of which are only sold with an automatic, are unchanged, however their driveaway prices have been dropped by $2000.

Haval’s seven year unlimited distance warranty is what Haval calls “Promotional” and is only offered on sales till the end of 2019. But given that so many competitors are currently involved in a warranty battle may we speculate that the seven-year warranty on

the Haval may become standard? Five year national roadside assistance through the Australian motoring clubs is another component of this sales push. Haval is part of the GWM Group, China’s largest SUV and pickup truck manufacturer.

A ‘tonne’ of work in Triton Challenge Ŷ From page 1 The front seat armrest is also improved with double stitching in the soft knee pads on the floor console and on the console lid. The door trim uses thicker-gauge laminate and stitching, while double stitching is added to the parking brake lever and boot for a more substantial feel and improved looks. Trays are provided at the bottom of the dash centre panel and there’s a USB charging socket in the floor console rear panel enabling rear passengers to charge devices. INFOTAINMENT The colour liquid crystal Multi Information Display, situated conveniently on the central dashboard, and a high-contrast meter cluster with higher definition dials than previously keep the driver in touch with systems and controls. The audio system uses a high-quality 7-inch touchscreen and is Bluetooth compatible. AM/FM radio is available across all grades and DAB radio on GLX and GLS. All 7-inch models come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Mitsubishi Triton is powered by a choice of two engines, the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, producing maximum power output of 133 kW at 3500 rpm and maximum torque of 430 Nm at 2500 rpm. A six-speed automatic is now available on diesel models. There's also the offer of a 4G64 petrol engine with 94kW, and 194Nm at 4000rpm. it sits in front of a five-speed manual driving the rear wheels. SAFETY Mitsubishi

Australia

has

upgraded

safety to what it tells us is a higher level than rival pick-ups. It includes forward collision mitigation to detect vehicles and pedestrians ahead, while rear cross-traffic alert helps the driver check behind for other vehicles or pedestrians when reversing. Blind spot warning with lane change assist comes to the aid of the driver when changing lanes and ultrasonic missacceleration mitigation helps prevent accidental use of the accelerator when moving off or reversing. DRIVING Mitsubishi has measured the fuel consumption at 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. The test vehicle came closer to 10 litre per hundred. The suspension is the same as before with minor changes bringing better directional stability. While the suspension strikes a balance between toughness and ride comfort, there is still some uncomfortable bobbing up and down on uneven road surfaces at speed. Engineers put work into braking performance with the 18-inch wheels and feel is more positive than previously. Care has been taken to make occupants as comfortable as space will allow. Seats are well shaped and nicely padded. Off road, the Triton GLX four-wheel drive keeps the Mitsubishi Easy Select system allowing the driver to switch simply between 2WD and 4WD on the move. Three transfer case settings – 2H, 4H, 4L – means the driver can switch between 2H and 4H on the fly at speeds less than 100 km/h. At more than five metres long, with a turning circle of almost 12 metres, manoeuvring can be a chore. Width is a

more manageable 1.8 metres. The tub will take loads of almost 1.5 metres square. SUMMING UP There’s no denying the Triton is trying

to make up lost ground on rivals and while it seems safe at third place on the sales chart, it will need some canny selling to overhaul the two market leaders. The new seven-year warranty is a good start.

Ŷ 2015 Toyota LandCruiser

Ŷ 2007 Toyota LandCruiser

Ŷ 2012 Toyota LandCruiser

Used car checkout Toyota Landcruiser 2007 - 2017 THERE’S something very Australian about the Toyota LandCruiser. Ever since 1949 when the first ever ‘Cruiser was privately imported to work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme this big rugged off-roader has been the yardstick against which all other serious 4WDs have been measured. Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series is a large 4WD from the old school that's rugged and capable of tackling deserts, bush and rugged hills with ease. There are plenty of them in the suburbs as well, though they're for obvious reasons they're seldom the vehicle of choice for inner city dwellers. The LC 200 dates back all the way to November 2007 when it replaced the 100 Series. The 200 is a major evolution of the 100 Series rather than a completely new model. Because Toyota treats the biggest LandCruisers as commercial vehicles rather than passenger cars they have much longer life cycles. There have been upgrades in the intervening 12 years, more about them later. Toyota gave the LC200 an upgrade in March 2012 with a facelift, extra equipment and improved off-road technology. Visual changes included new grille treatments that varied according to model levels and include new chrome surrounds, revised bumpers, new colour and interior trim choices. This is a large vehicle, but visibility is good in all directions, even around the front windscreen pillars. Parking isn’t helped by a large turning circle, but its height isn’t excessive and it will fit into parking stations built to standard measurements. Getting in and out is awkward at times, as it’s a fair climb up to the seats and they are set a fair way distance inboard compared to passenger cars. The interior is spacious and the LandCruiser 200 can seat up to eight people. Six

By EWAN KENNEDY can be adults, though four grownups and four children is more realistic. The secondrow seats can slide backwards and forwards. When they are all the way back the legroom they provide is limo-like. Some the lower cost models had two rows of seats. The two rearmost seats fold up against the side of the luggage area Even with the seats in use you can fit fairly bulky suitcases behind them. The LandCruiser 200’s ride is significantly more comfortable than that of the 100 Series. Perhaps not quite passenger car, but not that far removed either. March 2012 saw the 200 Series getting a facelift, with a bolder front grille and and reshaped lights, together with revised bumpers. Infotainment systems were upgraded and engines improved. All models now had 138-litre fuel-tank capacity; 93-litre main and 45-litre sub tank. It makes a great long distance cruiser for major family trips. Most LandCruiser 200s in Australia are powered by a 4.5-litre V8 diesel with twin turbochargers. It's reasonably economical, smooth and provides plenty of grunt. They are particularly suited to heavy-duty towing. Some of the first LC 200s had a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine. It was a renowned gas guzzler. A new 4.6-litre unit, sold from the March 2012 update is significantly better and more economical. While it uses more fuel than the diesels quite a few people bought the petrols for the sophisticated feel and low noise levels it provides. The 4.7-litre engine sat in front of a fivespeed automatic transmission, the 4.6-litre has a six-speeder which played its part in the improved economy.

Then there's the big gun powerplant, a petrol V8 with 5.7 litres is on offer in the top end variants of the LandCruiser 200 Series. (Note that the Lexus LX570 is a LandCruiser 200 with a lot of extra gear and a big price tag. Most are only used as easy-going family carriers. You may care to check them out if you're looking at high end LandCruiser 200s.) Toyota LandCruisers have plenty of underbonnet and under-vehicle space so the knowledgeable home mechanic can do a lot of their own work. There are Toyota dealers in all areas of Australia, thanks to the company having the most widespread of all networks. October 2015 saw a mildly facelifted LandCruiser 200 with advanced active safety technology. Changes to the petrol and diesel engines have them both a little more grunt with fewer emissions. Servicing and spare parts are generally reasonably priced. But keep in mind that these are large heavy-duty, commerciallyoriented vehicles so running costs are higher than for a passenger car in the same price range. Insurance is unlikely to cause real hassles as the working nature of the vehicle means most companies have favourable experiences with the vehicle, letting them keep premiums relatively low. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Check the service records are up to date and that the work has been done according to the Cruiser’s use, not to distance travelled. Lots of driving in dusty conditions needs more frequent oil changes and inspections of the drive systems. LandCruisers that have had severe offroad use – and plenty have – will probably have underbody, door-sill and bumper-cor-

ner damage. Even those which have only had gentle use away from sealed roads are likely to have scratches in the paint caused by squeezing the wide vehicle through narrow spots. Look for dust in the cabin and boot. This may be caused by windows-down driving, but could also mean leaks around the door seals. Maybe even a twisted chassis due to off-road damage and/or a crash. Be wary of the engine’s condition if it has done harsh off-road driving and/or heavy-duty towing. Engines are generally long lasting but watch for a smoking exhaust when the engine is under load that may indicate it is near the end of its life. An oil light that’s slow to go out when the engine is started is another indication of engine wear. Check for signs of salty sand as it can cause real rust troubles. Look for rust in the floor, especially if the Cruiser has had a lot of beach use. Have a professional inspector follow up your initial examination as a hard used example could cost big bucks to be put back together again. HOW MUCH? Look at paying from $17,000 to $24,000 for a 2007 Toyota LandCruiser GX; $21,000 to $29,000 for a 2009 GX; $31,000 to $42,000 for a 2009 GXL; $37,000 to $48,000 for a 2010 GXL; $43,0000 to $56,000 for a 2017 GX; $51,000 to $68,000 for a 2013 Sahara; $60,000 to $79,000 for a 2016 GXL; $67,000 to $90,000 for a 2016 Sahara; and $77,000 to $102,000 for a 2018 Sahara.
