TRACK READY: New 488 Pista is the most powerful Ferrari V8 ever.

More power less weight for new Ferrari 488 By ALISTAIR KENNEDY For Pista this dual International Engine of the Year has been upgraded with more than 50 per cent of new components making it the most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari’s history with up to 720 horsepower (530 kW) at 8000 rpm and maximum torque of 770 Nm from 3000 revs. The engine is 18 kg lighter than that in the GTB with new titanium con-rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums. The inverted radiator is now raked rearwards to maintain optimal performance under high heat stress situations. The engine air intakes have been moved from the sides to the rear spoiler area to

ensure a higher volume and cleaner flow of air to the engine. The change also frees up space for a larger intercooler. Ferrari 488 Pista is 90 kg lighter than the 488 GTB, with reductions centred around most weight-sensitive areas of the car, such as the unsprung masses and components away from the car’s centre of gravity. The bodyshell features carbon-fibre for the engine cover, the front and rear bumpers and the rear spoiler. There are optional 20-inch single-piece carbon-fibre wheel rims that are about 40 per cent lighter than the 488 GTB’s standard wheel rims. These feature a special coating on the channel and

spokes which efficiently dissipates heat generated under braking. With all this heavy grunt and light weight Ferrari claims a zero to 100 km/h time of just 2.85 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.6 seconds, quicker by 0.15 and 0.7 seconds than the GTB. The interior of the 488 Pista continues the weight-loss trend with all nonessential components eliminated. There is extensive use of lightweight, exclusive technical materials such as carbon-fibre and Alcantara leather. Even the glove compartment has been removed leaving only storage pockets on the rear bench and the doors.

FERRARI Australia has unveiled its latest Super Series model, the track-ready 488 Pista coupe and convertible. The 488 Pista is a direct descendant of Ferrari’s first ever mid-mounted V8 the 308 GTB which was launched in 1975. It joins the 488 GTB that arrived here in 2015 but with a more powerful engine and lighter body for significantly improved performance. Ferrari 488 Pista was developed primarily for road use but as the name Pista suggests (it’s Italian for track) it is track ready and this is likely to be its greatest appeal to some potential buyers. Like the 488 GTB the Pista is powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in place of the previous 4.5-litre naturally-aspirated unit.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME: Sensational Alfa Romeo Stelvio is now offered in redhot Quadrifoglio format. By EWAN KENNEDY ALFA Romeo has announced that the hottest version of its SUV, the Quadrifoglio, will reach Australia in mid January and will have an MSRP of $149,900. Orders are being taken now. Its 2.9-litre V6 bi-turbo petrol engine puts out up to 375kW of power, with torque of 600 Nm to give a zero to 100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

More power less weight From page 1 There is contrasting hand-stitching, tread plates and heel rests in triangular pattern aluminium and sculpted door panels. The Australian launch of the Pista was held in the 2400 square-metre Ferrari North Shore Service Centre. This stateof-the-art facility incorporates the latest Ferrari high-tech equipment including seven Corghi hoists, one of which was used to display the Pista’s underbody technology and design elements. In conjunction with the Sydney launch of the 488 Pista coupe its Spider convertible sibling was unveiled at Ferrari’s new Gold Coast showroom. Both models are on sale now with the coupe priced at $596,888 and the Spider at $658, 888. On-road costs need to be added.

Honda HR-V RS

By EWAN KENNEDY FOLLOWING our recent two-week outback holiday in Queensland driving a Honda CR-V we moved across into the CR-V’s smaller brother, the Honda HR-V. In particular a newly introduced model, the RS which is a semi sporty variant. The introduction of the RS brings the 2018 HR-V range to four model grades: VTi, VTi-S, RS and VTi-LX. STYLING The HR-V RS has 18-inch alloy wheels, black chromed main grille, honeycomb lower grille and foglight garnish. Keeping up the dark theme it has black door mirrors; dark chromed door handles; and a piano black body kit. Inside, are heated leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel and gear knob, and alloy sports pedals. The above details are of the new HR-V RS, however, Honda has taken the opportunity to facelift the rest of the HR-V range. We are told that these are based on the oft-lauded styling of the Honda Civic. The updates include a new front bumper and grille across the range and LED headlights from the VTi-S upwards. POWERTRAIN Though it’s aimed at the sportier side of the SUV market, new HR-V RS doesn’t have any more performance as it retains the standard 1.8-litre, four-cylinder engine that continues to produce 105 kilowatts of power, with torque of 172 Newton metres. All HR-V models have a CVT automatic, but in this latest upgrade of the range it features stepped ratios at full throttle. This gives a sporty feel without taking too much away from the added efficiency of a CVT. There are paddle shifters on the RS if the driver doesn’t agree on the ratio chosen by the computer. INFOTAINMENT The HR-V offers advanced audio, information and connectivity features via a 7.0-inch touch screen. There’s Bluetooth connectivity for Apple and Android systems, including audio streaming, Siri with Apple iPhone and HDMI audio. SAFETY As well as the normal suite of passive and active safety systems, the RS has Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure

HALF HOT: Sporty Honda HR-V RS features a dark finish. Warning. The latter determines if the vehicle is unintentionally leaving the lane and gives visible and audible warnings to tell the driver to concentrate on driving. DRIVING Stepping out of the Honda CR-V into the smaller HR-V was interesting. There is less loss of interior space than we had expected. Certainly it’s smaller, but two adults can be carried comfortably in the back without too much compromising between front and rear occupants. The RS’s luggage area isn’t a lot smaller either and, of course, uses Honda’s excellent fully flat ‘magic’ system that’s spacious and easy to use. New-design front seats are fitted to the RS. These gave good support and comfort during our test period. Honda tells us additional insulation for a quieter cabin in RS and the interior ambience felt

Sophisticated

like that of a larger, more upmarket SUV. Incidentally, the topline HR-V model, the VTi-LX, also receives the same seats and extra insulation as the new RS. Much of the work to produce the semi sporty RS is in the suspension and handling department with firmer damper and spring rates for reduced body roll. In an interesting move the RS has a new variable steering gear ratio of 2.38:1 compared to the 2.79:1 of the others in the HR-V range. You wouldn’t exactly call this a track day car, but there was plenty of driving pleasure from the way the RS felt when we took it over our hilly test route behind our home on the Gold Coast. It’s quick to respond to steering inputs, isn’t fazed by sudden changes of direction and throttle control in bends works nicely. Comfort hasn’t suffered overmuch,

though some passengers did say it bumped around more than they liked on some of the harsher road segments. Tyre noise is generally pretty good though good-old Aussie coarse-chip surfaces do increase it, particularly on newer surfaced segments. You don’t get something for nothing in this world and as keen drivers we are more than happy with the way this Honda feels. As always do your own pre-purchase test drive and make sure you cover the sort of roads that you will be following in day-today driving. And perhaps take it for a fang on your favourite Sunday-drive roads. SUMMING UP Honda’s new RS variant of the popular HR-V is enjoyable to drive and a competent load carrier. It would certainly get a place on our short list if we are contemplating a small-medium SUV.

new safety features on Lexus LS 500

SAFE AS HOUSES: Lexus LS is a sleek high-tech luxury saloon. By EWAN KENNEDY LEXUS has introduced additional driving assistance and advanced precollision support in its LS 500 flagship. World-first technology can pinpoint the location of a pedestrian and

automatically control the car’s steering and braking. The position of the pedestrian is shown in an animated graphic on the vehicle’s head-up display, aiding the driver’s intuitive recognition of the situation. If the car calculates that brake control

alone will be insufficient to avoid a collision, it can provide steering assistance in addition to activating an alert and applying the brakes. When active steering assist is deployed, the car will only move within a clearly marked lane. The system automatically

checks for any vehicles including motorcycles. Other new safety features help the car stay in its correct lane and to warn the driver of the possibility of collisions with vehicles approaching diagonally or from either side at intersections.

Hyundai Ioniq launched

By EWAN KENNEDY

MIDWAY through the year we drove Hyundai’s Ioniq during early-stage testing on Australian roads. Now the eagerly awaited Hyundai is going on sale Downunder. It is offered in pure-electric and petrol-petrol-electric variant. The flagship Ioniq Electric has a real-world, pureelectric range of 230 km and the capability for charging its high-voltage lithium-ion polymer battery to 80 per cent capacity in approximately 23 minutes. It is priced from $44,990 The 2019 Ioniq Plug-in combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. It can make electric-only trips of up to 63 kilometres and has the option for easy overnight charging of the high-voltage

battery. Recommended retail is $40,990. The 2019 Ioniq Hybrid is a significantly lower cost model - from just $33,990 which is powered primarily by a petrol engine, with a battery-powered electric motor providing assistance as required. Regenerative braking allows the hybrid system to recover much of the kinetic energy that is lost in conventional vehicles, using it to charge the high-voltage battery. Every 2019 Hyundai Ioniq is available in Elite and Premium trim levels, and each boasts safety, convenience and driver appeal familiar from Hyundai’s conventional-engine line-up. We will arrange test drives of several models and provide details and our opinions shortly.

IT’S HERE: Hyundai Ioniq is a smart looking hatchback with various power sources.
