Volkswagen Tiguan

Allspace R-line

UPMARKET PEOPLE MOVER: Squared off lines of new Volkswagen Allspace work neatly.

By Ewan Kennedy useful 700 litres. Interestingly, the Allspace is the only seven-seater in the Volkswagen SUV range as the larger Touareg is still a five-seater. Despite the impressively low prices – from $45,490 to $60,427 – the equipment levels are high in both models: three-zone climate-control air conditioning, keyless entry and start as well as an electronic tailgate. There is even a rechargeable torch in luggage area. Highline adds electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, heated front and second row two outer seats and Vienna leather appointed upholstery.

Ambient interior lighting gives it a real feeling of prestige. Our test Tiguan Allspace for the past week was the top of the range model, the R-line, which adds 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels, R-line bumpers and side sills, a black rear spoiler, aluminium scuff plates, black Vienna leather seats, black headline, steering wheel with paddles, brushed stainless steel pedals STYLING We do like the sharp edged styling which is very much like that of big brother Audi. In particular the front end with its single horizontal area that encompasses the headlights and grille. The added length does give the Allspace

a surprisingly different look thanks to a raised bonnet above the radiator grille, silver painted door mirror shells, wider rear doors and a revised C-pillar design. It rides on 18-inch Kingston alloy wheels on the Comfortline, and Auckland 19s on the Highline. INFOTAINMENT A Volkswagen Discover Media navigation system is operated through an 8-inch touchscreen with App-Connect, Media Control. Apple Carplay and Android Auto is standard in both models as is Bluetooth. Allspace Highline upgrades to a 9.2inch screen and Discover Pro satellite navigation system.

MIDWAY through 2018 Volkswagen introduced the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace. Though based on the five-seat Tiguan the new Allspace is a significantly longer vehicle. It has more overall length, at 4701mm (+215mm), a longer wheelbase (+109mm), and 106mm more rear overhang. All of which allows for the addition of two seats in a third row but with the same width as the five-seater. Cleverly it still has a boot capacity of 230 litres with all the seats in use. Some competitors have most of their boot space disappearing when a rearmost row of seats is installed. With the third row seats folded down the boot goes up a very

New Ford Escape

will be offered as a hybrid

GOING GREEN: New Ford Escape SUV has sporty looking lines but won’t be here until 2020. IN an interesting move, Ford Australia has announced that its all-new Ford Escape SUV will be offered as a plug-in hybrid when it arrives Downunder in 2020. It will be the first Ford PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric) model offered in this country and indicates Ford is serious about meeting future owners’ needs. Escape hybrid will be powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, electric motor and generator, and 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery to produce up to 165kW of power. Ford says it will have a fully-electric driving range in excess of 50 kilometres.

By Ewan Kennedy It seems likely that it will also be sold here with conventional engines, however, Ford Australia is keeping details secret at this early stage. All-new Ford Escape is slightly larger than the model it will replace and carries many of the same styling themes, particularly in the grille and tail. The side view carries a sporty look with an upswept D-pillar and a neat tail spoiler. New Escape is 44mm wider and 89mm longer than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase has increased by 20mm.

Inside, it has 43mm additional shoulder room and 57mm more hip room in the front seats.Rear passengers will share 20mm more shoulder room and 36mm more hip room. Though it’s 20mm lower overall the all-new Escape provides 13mm more headroom over the front seats. Impressively there’s 35mm additional headroom in the rear seats. Versatility is excellent as the entire second row of seats can be moved forwards or backwards to juggle between legroom and boot space. Yet the new platform, tagged as C2, means Focus will be up to 90kg lighter.

Volkswagen Tiguan From page 1 Audio entertainment in our test vehicle was by way of the optional Dynaudio Excite premium sound system and was a delight to listen to. There are only three USB ports, we reckon an extra couple would make more sense in a vehicle designed for multiple kid carting. POWERTRAINS Tiguan Allspace is available with a variety of petrol and diesel engines: The range begins with the Comfortline grade with a 110kW/250Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, six-speed DSG automatic and front-wheel drive. Next is a version of the same 2.0 tuned for 132kW/320Nm, with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Finally, the Comfortline can be powered by a 110kW/340Nm turbo-diesel, again with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION. Tiguan Allspace Highline has a VW Golf GTI-derived 162kW/350Nm turbo-petrol, or a 140kW/400Nm turbo-diesel. Both have a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION. Our road test car had this engine. Note that the 110kW petrol and both turbo-diesel engines will not be available until later this year due to delays caused by the introduction of the new WLTP fuel consumption and CO2 emission process. SAFETY Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace has been given a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The second row seats have three top tether points and IsoFix mounts in the outboard positions.

Driver assist features include city autonomous emergency braking, multicollision braking, pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, park assist, a rear view camera and front and rear sensors. To these safety features, the Allspace Highline adds side assist, rear traffic alert and traffic jam assist. What VW calls ‘Manoeuvre Braking’ brakes the Tiguan if somebody walks behind it while you’re reversing. Very useful when people are wandering about carparks totally immersed in their phones. Automatic headlights and wipers are part of the safety package. DRIVING Though there are seats for seven it’s obvious the Allspace is a stretched fiveseater. The front and middle rows have ample legroom and headroom, but the rear pair of seats are best left for preteen kids. Fair enough, you have to compromise somewhere and the better than average cargo space is due to the smallish seats back there. Having said that getting the kids into the back seats is easy because of the extra-long rear doors. As is the norm, I found the kick-toopen back door didn’t work for me - I’ve almost a 100 per cent failure rate with this allegedly useful feature in every vehicle tested. Don’t worry, I’m a persistent bloke and will conquer them one day. Jokes aside, try before you buy… The engine is responsive, with minimal

The platform provides increased rigidity as well as NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) improvements. “We’re proud to bring the first of our global electrified vehicles to Australian customers in the stylish and capable allnew Escape,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand president and CEO, Kay Hart. “Australians continue to embrace SUVs, which is why we are introducing our first plug-in hybrid powertrain with this vehicle.” More detailed specifications and Australian-market details including pricing will be announced closer to the all-new Ford Escape’s launch in 2020.

Allspace R-line

turbo lag and real willingness to get up and go when you want to. It’s happy to hang onto gears and use torque to keep you moving, but will change down promptly if you give it a bit of a stab. Fuel consumption was typically in the six to eight litres per hundred kilometres range on motorways and easy paced country roads. If you do get stuck into it usage is likely to climb dramatically into the 10 to 13 litres range. The latter seems high but keep in mind this is a people mover that can do the zero to 100 km/h run in under seven seconds. As is often the way with VW doubleclutch gearboxes it can be irritating at parking speeds, particularly if you’ve got full lock on and the 225mm wide tyres aren’t keen on changing direction.

On the road comfort is good, with the typical solid feel we’ve admired in Volkswagens for many decades. Handling is impressive for a mediumlarge SUV and the Tiguan holds onto the road at speeds likely to be tackled by most drivers. Particularly if the driver has his wife and children on board. Steering feel is good, perhaps a little lighter than some would like in a semiperformance vehicle like this, but we were happy with it. SUMMING UP Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-line is an attractive, comfortable people mover with a hint of sportiness in its makeup. The R-line costs a fair bit more than the more basic versions, but if you can justify the extra bucks it’s worth it.

Rio in ‘Line’

to kick on for Kia AFFORDABLE: In looks and performance, the GT-Line is a great addition to the Kia Rio range

KIA has done work on the Rio, realigning its hatchback to meet the demands of an increasingly sophisticated market. The Rio has upgraded drivetrains and revised its levels, the Si and SLi models being sidelined to make way for the new Sport. The latter featuring a six-speed automatic transmission in place of the old four-speed gearbox. While the range-topping GT-Line takes up a glad bag of goodies including a feisty 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine mated with Kia’s own seven-speed dual clutch automatic. The entry-level Rio S is unchanged, with the 74 kW 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol motor hooked up to either a sixspeed manual or four-speed automatic. The step up to Sport adds the sixspeed automatic transmission or sixspeed manual, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear shifter and electric folding mirrors. Kia’s industry-leading seven-year warranty, seven-year capped price servicing and seven-year roadside assist, have kept the Rio as a compelling option for light-car buyers. Prices start at $16,990, plus onroads, for the S manual and top out at $21,990 drive away for the GT-Line auto,

By Derek Ogden the test vehicle. STYLING Stylishly sophisticated, rather than over aggressive in body language, the top-dog Rio has plenty to please, with a GT-Line body kit with radiator grille, rear diffuser, plus twin exhaust, LED running lights, LED rear combination lights and LED fog lamps. INTERIOR The cabin decor is surprisingly sophisticated, with touches of leather, carbon-look dashboard and flatbottomed GT-Line steering wheel. The instrument cluster and colour LCD screen work in well. Low-set seats mean there is ample head room, while leg room in the back is adequate, depending on the height of front seat occupants. Lateral support is lacking, so tight turns at speed can cause some passenger wobble. Storage is well catered for in a decentsize boot and rear door pockets, while those up front are big enough to take a bottle. Very accommodating. Conspicuous by its absence is climate control, with only basic air-conditioning controls.

INFOTAINMENT With a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto and six-speaker audio system, there is no embedded satellite navigation, so your smartphone is the go. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The top-range Rio features the threecylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine punching out 88 kW of power and 172 Nm of torque driving through the sevenspeed dual clutch transmission, a first for Kia in Australia. SAFETY The ANCAP five-star safety Rio has anti-skid braking, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, reverse parking sensors, rearview camera, three child restraint points (two IsoFix) and six airbags. It has more advanced high strength steel than previously. The increased rigidity of its reinforced chassis not only provides greater safety in collision performance, but also improves stability and handling, as well as reducing noise, vibration and harshness levels. In a first for Rio, the GT-Line also comes standard with autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and driver attention alert.

DRIVING What turbo lag there is, is diminished by putting the boot in … to the detriment of fuel economy. Kia quotes 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. On test I got it up to 9 pushing hard on a mix of built-up area going and motorway cruising. At all times the three-cylinder engine appeared to be coping with whatever it was called on to produce under varying loads and driving conditions. Cornering at more than waltz speeds failed to have the Rio dancing. Perfectly poised. Significant attention has also been given to unique sports tuning for the GT-Line. Ride can be firm, despite attention from Kia’s Aussie suspension engineers. Road noise on test, courtesy of lowprofile tyres, made it into the cabin in varying degrees of intensity – some quite intrusive - according to the road surface. SUMMARY The secret of this Rio is in the title ‘GT-Line’. There are hints of GT performance, tempered with the nuance of luxury in ‘Line’, all at an affordable price. Buyers keeping that in mind will not be disappointed.

Volkswagen Multivan

Black Edition „ FIT FOR SEVEN: Lowset and stylish the Volkswagen Multivan Black Edition has an upmarket stance.

VOLKSWAGEN Australia realises that many people are buying seven-seat SUVs because they are tough and trendy but often then come to realise that the back seats can be difficult to get into and squeezy once you’re there. So VW also sells a Multivan seven-seater that offers spacious accommodation for seven. It hasn’t sold as well as anticipated and so it has introduced a stylish Multivan Black Edition. Some 230 examples of the Multivan Black Edition are coming Downunder. The launch of the Black Edition took place at the Manly (Sydney) Annual Kombi Rally. Based on the seven-seat Multivan Comfortline TDI340 is powered by 2.0-litre turbo diesel through a seven-speed DSG.
