LEADING THE PACK: Longer and more spacious than ever, the gen-four Hyundai Santa Fe has an air of style to its lines.
New-Generation Hyundai Santa Fe By EWAN KENNEDY STYLING The 2019 Santa Fe has Hyundai’s newdesign Cascading Grille and an interesting split-lighting design. Bi-function headlights in the Santa Fe Highlander feature a bending function to light the way into and around corners as you turn the steering wheel. Alloy wheels for each of the three Santa Fe grades span 17- to 19-inches in diameter. INSIDE Second-row legroom is increased by 29mm and an 18mm-higher seat base brings a better view forward and to the side. The second-row seat bases slide
through 300mm to let you juggle space. The rear floor tunnel is lowered from 53mm to 26mm to allow extra space for the legs of the centre-rear occupant. Third-row access space is increased by 36mm to 170mm. Headroom in the third row is increased by 42mm. Powered front seats with heating and ventilation are fitted to the Santa Fe Elite and it has a 10-way power adjustable seat for the driver and an eight-way seat for the front passenger. Highlander goes crazy, with a 14-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Yes, 14way. As well as the usual adjustments, there’s also four-way lumbar and two-way cushion extension.
Highlander even features heated outboard rear seats. Luggage space is 130 litres behind the third row seats, expanding to 547 litres behind the second row and to an impressive 1625 litres with both rear rows folded. INFOTAINMENT Santa Fe Active uses a 7-inch multimedia system with Radio Data System, Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition. The Elite and Highlander have an 8.0inch display and the satellite navigation system has three-dimensional map views, a lifetime map care update plan and live traffic data.

HYUNDAI Santa Fe is now in its fourth generation, has a stylish look, extensive safety features and a strong emphasis on connectivity. Operating in the increasingly popular seven-seat SUV field Santa Fe is larger than its predecessor. It is 70mm longer, at 4770mm, and rides on a 65mm greater wheelbase (2765mm). Front overhang is unchanged, but the rear overhang is greater by 5mm. Ground clearance of 185mm means it’s not quite a 4WD, but will be able to handle bush trails and the like. Santa Fe is available in the company’s usual three trim levels: Active, Elite and Highlander.

Lexus
RX350 L
THE ONLY WAY TO TRAVEL: Lovely styling and an immaculate interior are major features of the new seven-seat Lexus RX L. LEXUS RX has been a major player in its SUV class in Australia for close to 20 years now. Early in 2018 a stretched seven-seat model was added to the range for the first time. Using the moniker of Lexus RX L its body is 110 mm longer and the roof 10 mm higher than in the ongoing five-seater RX range. The all-wheel-drive Lexus RX L is sold in two grades, Luxury and Sports Luxury, with features almost identical to their five-seat equivalents. Our test vehicle for the past week has been a Sports Luxury. STYLING The front ends of Lexus models are becoming larger and ever more daring with every new model. The latest RX lines please most buyers, though some still find it a bit over the top. For your information, I finally like it, though it took a while… The tailgate has a steeper slope than the five-door. This results in a profile with a swooping slope that’s neatly picked out in dark glass and metal and metallic-look details. INSIDE One-touch levers on both sides of the Lexus RX L fold and slide the second-row seats forward to give reasonably easy access to the third row. However, the area is best used by the junior travellers as oldies may struggle a bit to get in there.
By EWAN KENNEDY Cleverly, the second row seats are slightly higher than the third row to make good foot room for rear passengers. This does restrict forward view for those right at the back, vision to the side is fine. A three-zone air-conditioning system provides occupants of all three rows with vents and adjusting controls. When the 50:50 split-fold third-row seat is in use Lexus RX still has a boot length of 566 mm, so it can cope with a large stroller. At the touch of a button, the third-row seats fold completely flat giving 432 litres of cargo space under the tonneau cover. Leather-accented trim is used in the first two rows of seats. Sensibly, the third row has durable synthetic coverings. INFOTAINMENT In the topline Lexus RX L Sports Luxury there’s a 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system and a large, easy-to-read 12.3inch colour screen. While the controls aren’t as fiddly to use as in some Lexus models, they are still an acquired taste and demand more attention than we like. POWERTRAINS These extended Lexus models are powered by either a V6 petrol engine in the 350L, or a petrol-electric Hybrid
Drive system in the RX 450hL. Ours was the pure-petrol model mated to an eightspeed automatic transmission. SAFETY Active safety features (those designed to prevent or mitigate a crash) include vehicle stability control, traction control, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, hill-start assist control and low-tyre-pressure warning. Passive safety items (minimising damage to occupants) in Lexus RX L models are 10 airbags: dual-stage frontseat airbags, front-seat knee airbags, side airbags for the front and second-row seats. The curtain airbags extend to the third-row seats. DRIVING There’s a serene luxurious feel inside the Lexus RX L, with top grade materials that impressed all who rode in our test car. Naturally there’s the quietness and relaxation that has been a hallmark of the Lexus marque since it was launched here in the late 1980s. You sit further back from the windscreen than in others in this class, but vision ahead and to the side is fine. The big dash somehow gives the feeling you’re well away from the rest of the world. The topline Lexus seven-seater has

Santa Fe has Hyundai Auto Link, a system that connects the Santa Fe’s smart computer to a mobile phone via Bluetooth allowing owners to keep track of vehicle information, including real-time diagnostics, tyre pressure monitoring, driving history statistics, parking management, easy service scheduling and automatic access to roadside assistance. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be accessed using a voice control button on the steering wheel. Highlander also features a wireless inductive charging pad (Qi standard) for compatible phones. A 10-speaker Infinity Premium Audio System is installed in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander. POWERTRAINS A 138 kW / 241 Nm four-cylinder 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a six-speed automatic is sold only with the Active, the lowest cost model. A 147 kW / 440 Nm four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine with
a new-design eight-speed automatic transmission is available on all three models. In every Santa Fe variant engine power is sent to all four wheels through the new Hyundai-developed HTRAC variabletorque-control all-wheel drive system. In combination with each of the drive modes - Comfort, Eco, Sport and Smart modes
adaptive variable suspension. While handling is safe and predictable the vehicle definitely leans to the luxury side of its Sport Luxury title. Which is fine and we are sure it will appeal to the great majority of owners. Ride comfort is very good and those junior travellers we carted around in the back seat said they loved it back there. The Lexus 3.5-litre V6 engine keeps on improving with age as engineers fine tune it. It’s near silent when running and the sounds that do come through when it’s worked hard are pleasingly businesslike. Throttle response is prompt, the automatic transmission was almost invariably in the correct gear and unless you’re travelling really hard the changes are all but imperceptible. Petrol consumption around town was usually in the nine to eleven litres per hundred kilometres range, which is pretty good for a seven-seat people mover / SUV. On the motorway and in easy paced country running it had no trouble dropping below eight litres per hundred. SUMMING UP Lexus RX L is a beautifully crafted seven-seat passenger wagon that will appeal to those in the $100,000 to $125,000 price range who are looking for something other than a European vehicle.
Hyundai Santa Fe
- HTRAC optimises traction to individual needs and conditions. SAFETY Active safety features standard in all three Santa Fe grades include forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot monitoring, collision-avoidance assist, lane keep assist and a driver inattention warning.
From the Elite upwards Santa Fe, there’s blind-spot and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist systems, as well as driver attention warning, high beam assist and lane keeping assist. Passive safety is provided by a strong body and six airbags: two front, two side and two curtain airbags cover the first and second row seats. Like every Hyundai passenger car and SUV the Santa Fe has done many thousands of kilometres of suspension and handling tuning for Australia, done on country and city roads. “First and foremost it had to be comfortable for families; it had to be safe with good recovery after big bumps, and we sprinkled in some fun-to-drive,” said Andrew Tuitahi, Hyundai Motor Company Australia senior manager product planning. We haven’t driven the new gen-four Hyundai Santa Fe yet, but will do so asap and get back to you with our impressions.
