Veloster: That’s more like it, sport
Ŷ BALANCED: Hyundai has made all the right moves in strengthening the Veloster’s appeal as a true sports car.
By DEREK OGDEN was hung off the motor that things began to heat up, Series II adding grunt with a rangetopping Veloster SR+ Turbo. Things have continued to evolve, with the latest Veloster 1.6 T six-speed manual (the test vehicle) putting in a stirring performance. STYLING Design of the second-generation has pretty much stayed the same from the word go – bold, some might say brash – typical of a hot hatch, while emphasising the three-door coupe’s sporty DNA. An expansive front incorporates a sporty take on Hyundai’s hallmark cascading grille. A steeper roofline, increased bonnet length, and sculpted wheel arches back this up for a
powerful and refined coupe image. A new rear spoiler and spoiler side garnish, slits at each side of the rear bumper, front aircurtains to reduce air turbulence generated by the rotating wheels are all designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, maximise fuel efficiency and high-speed driving stability, while also reducing wind noise. The MY20 Veloster features LED daytime running lights, reverse parking alarm, rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, and tyre-pressure monitoring system. The flagship 1.6 T Premium also takes in a panoramic sunroof. INTERIOR The cabin is the antithesis of the flashy exterior – plain and simple, in the nicest possible way. An asymmetrical layout of the in-
strument panel and dashboard does reflect exterior styling to some extent, but the focus is well and truly on the driver’s need to absorb accurate information quick and easy. The Veloster Turbo Premium boasts leather seat trim, power driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, a Qi standard wireless charging pad, and head-up display. A sports steering wheel features a colour accent matched to the gear lever handle and cabin highlights, with a semi-perforated leather wrapping for super grip and sporty looks. Sports front seats with side bolsters add extra lateral support while also featuring central, extra-wide red piping for a distinctive style.

IT looks like a sports car; sounds like a sports car, it is a sports car . . . well, not always. Sometimes, performance is not all it’s cracked up to be. Take the Veloster, for example. When the Hyundai first came out, with its out-there looks and unusual architecture, it shaped up to be a challenger to the hot hatch mob. Unfortunately, somebody had forgotten to give it the performance to match. The Veloster was held back by a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Many forgave shortcomings, much talk being of the sedancum-coupe styling, with two doors on the passenger side, only one on the driver’s side. The result was added stiffness, and therefore better handling, without the inconvenience of squeezing in and out of the back seats through a single entrance. It wasn’t until later when a turbocharger

Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer By EWAN KENNEDY CELEBRATING the 50th anniversary of an Australian motoring icon, the 1969 Valiant Pacer, Chrysler Australia has announced details of the Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer. Paying homage to the original Valiant Pacer, the Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer will be available in an exclusive run of just 50 units across three colours, Bright White, Gloss Black and Ceramic Grey. The Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer is based on the Chrysler 300 SRT Core. Inspired by the Valiant’s black and red horizontal front grille, the Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer features a black and red decal across the lower apron with the classic ‘Pacer’ logo embedded within. There is also a black and red rear bootlid decal. ‘Pacer 392’ badges sit behind the front wheels, referencing the engine’s imperial displacement of 392 cubic inches (metric 6.4 litres). The side panels have sweeping red and black decal stripe along the shoulder of the vehicle. Under the bonnet, each Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer has an individually numbered build plate. The centre console also has a special edition plaque with build number. Inside, Pacer enhancements include ‘Pacer 392’ sill trims and ‘Pacer’ labelled front floor mats. A real tribute to Australia’s celebrated home grown Valiant Pacer, this exclusive

With each vehicle sold, customers will also receive a limited edition framed tribute print and exclusive Pacer keyring. The print features an image of an original Valiant Pacer and the Chrysler 300 SRT Pacer tribute in front of the Chrysler Factory in Adelaide. Each print includes the individual build plate of the corresponding vehicle.
Veloster: That’s more like it, sport Ŷ From page 1 INFOTAINMENT Veloster 1.6 Turbo variants incorporate an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia unit featuring satellite navigation, Infinity Premium audio and DAB+ digital radio, as well as a 4.2-inch TFT colour instrument cluster. Additionally, turbos have large speedometer and tachometer dials with needles positioned at six o’clock, red lighting that emphasises the high-performance image, and concealed white lighting to add depth. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The Gamma 1.6 T-GDI petrol turbo directinjected four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW at 6000 rpm and 265 Nm of torque from 1500 to 4500 rpm. In addition, an over-boost function lets peak torque temporarily reach up to 275 Nm (between 2000 and 4000 rpm) during full throttle acceleration. Over-boost is available when the engine has reached operating temperature. An electronic wastegate actuator turbocharger allows the precise tailoring of boost to torque curves. SAFETY The new Veloster’s more rigid monocoque (27.6 per cent more than before) contributes to a high level of occupant safety in the event of a crash. As well as increasing body rigidity, the body structure is designed to improve driving visibility, ergonomics and ease of entry and exit. Six airbags include front, side and curtain protection. Hyundai’s Smart Sense advanced safety technologies are standard across the range. These include forward collision avoidance, driver attention warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alarm and high beam assist.
will return a combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The equivalent test car recorded 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. Digital performance gauges such as torque, G-force and turbo boost, combined with sports steering wheel and seats, reinforce the fact that the new Veloster is engineered to be driven. For example, compared with the first-generation Veloster, the MY20 model includes a quicker-ratio electric power steering system for enhanced responsiveness and torque vectoring, which improves cornering. Thanks to a comprehensive Australianspecific chassis tune, to maximise the highperformance potential of the improved body rigidity and lightweight independent multilink suspension. Fun can be had with a Drive Mode Select system that allows drivers to tailor the car’s characteristics to their driving style, with Normal and Sport modes featured in the test manual version. Comfortable driving posture is encouraged by lowering the driver’s seat and raising the instrument panel level. The cargo area holds 303 litres of gear. SUMMING UP The Veloster 1.6 T manual strikes a good balance between sports car performance and driver input. Unique three-door coupe looks and a sub-40K price reinforce the car’s appeal to a wide range of potential buyers.

Suzuki Kizashi 2010 - 2016 By EWAN KENNEDY SUZUKI'S strength in Australia for many decades was in small cars and capable 4WDs. Then in January 2010, it made the interesting move into medium size cars. Kizashi is a stylish car with a powerful appearance that gives a solid look of sportiness. Then in August 2010 the Suzuki Kizashi Sport arrived. As beďŹ ts its title this Kizashi has a fullon sports body kit, 18-inch alloys and lowered ride height that further enhanced its already strong appearance. It took the European route of being offered with all-wheel drive for better traction on slippery surfaces. Ice, snow or rain. However, it's an AWD, not a 4WD as in Suzuki SUVs. However, the so-called Sport is heavier than the standard front-wheel-drive, but has no more power so is slower in a straight line. The 2.4-litre engine petrol four produces 131 kilowatts of power and 230 Newton metres of torque. This is a relatively large car so performance is adequate rather than exciting. Transmission is by a six-speed manual or CVT automatic. The former was never particularly popular and you may be able to pick one up for a pretty reasonable price. In August 2013 the emphasis on sporty looks was further enhanced by the ďŹ tment of the body kit used on the Sport model being installed on all models. Suzuki Kizashi is relatively tall and provides good interior room. There's better than average legroom in the back seat and four adults can be carried in comfort. Headroom is ďŹ ne in the standard models but the sunroof in the topline Kizashis steals a fair bit of height from the back seat.

Ĺś 2010 Suzuki Kizashi Ĺś 2012 Suzuki Kizashi AWD Sport Interior stowage space is good, with large door pockets and several other areas to hold all the little nick-nacks that seem to travel everywhere with us. Boot space is impressive thanks to the tall tail design and the opening is reasonably wide. However, you may ďŹ nd it difficult to get some really bulky items in. On the road the Suzuki Kizashi feels almost European in the strength of the body. Ride comfort remains good even on rough roads and tyre/road noise are generally well subdued, though coarse-chip surfaces do raise noise levels signiďŹ cantly. There is a fair number of Suzuki dealers Australia wide and the big success of the 4WD models mean there are more dealers in country and bush areas than for many other makers in this market segment. Insurance premiums for the Kizashi vary more than usual for this class, possibly because low sales mean that companies have statistically different experiences with them. Shop around for a good deal, but make sure

you’re doing accurate comparisons. If you are keen to get the high build quality of a Japanese vehicle, but like the chassis dynamics of a European one then a Suzuki Kizashi should be on your short list of cars. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Kizashi is a well built vehicle with a solid reputation but it still makes sense to have a professional inspection. Should you wish to do an initial inspection yourself look for the following: Crash damage or signs of repairs, the easiest things for amateurs to spot are ripples in the body panels when viewed end on in good light; tiny paint spots on unpainted areas like glass, badges and trim. Uneven wear on the front tyres and/or damage to the wheel rims probably indicates poor parking, but may also have been caused by a crash. Check the condition of the interior trim, particularly in the rear seat area where it may have been knocked about by the kids. Be sure the engine starts easily and settles
into a smooth idle within a few seconds of kicking over. Ideally, do this check with the engine stone cold after an overnight stop. The CVT automatic should be smooth and easy in operation. If you feel it's not in the correct ratio for the conditions it might be worthwhile getting a CVT expert to check it out. Manual gearboxes that crunch on fast downchanges may be due for major repairs. CAR BUYING TIP Buying a vehicle that's out of the ordinary? Be aware that it could be difficult to sell a few years down the track.
