SLEEKER: The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk shows off its stylish new looks.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

By VANI NAIDOO arrangement and sleek front bumper. The trademark seven-slot grille gives more of a Grand Cherokee feel and there is a new look for the rear too with a composite motion sensor bumper and fresh tail light arrangement. It certainly looks appealing enough and the tough boy image of the Trailhawk is reinforced by unmissable red recovery hooks in the front and rear. Inside, the changes are minimal yet practical. There is a larger phone tray, new trim colours and flash piano black and chrome highlights that make the overall feel a touch upmarket. Jeep

claims the fit and finish is better too, and we can attest to better feel materials all through the cabin. There are comfortable lodgings for the driver and front passenger with electronically adjustable supportive seats and good visibility ensuring it is easy enough to find that ideal position. The kids didn’t mind the comforts of the rear seat although adults might find legroom a little less generous. Headroom, too, might be tricky if you go for the optional sunroof. Water bottles fit in deep door pockets and there are two cupholders in the front and two more in the rear with a couple of storage compartments for

your bits and pieces. The boot is slightly bigger than the outgoing model with a two-level floor giving added practicality. Cleverly, the electric boot button is placed just above the wheel arch rather than on the top of the boot lid which makes it easier for the kids to reach. INFOTAINMENT Perched at the top of the range, the Trailhawk features Jeep’s Uconnect multi-media system with an 8.4-inch colour touchscreen and sat nav. The system itself is intuitive and super-easy to navigate and responsive to quick commands.

LOOKS may be subjective but when they prevent sales, car manufacturers have little choice but to take notice. The Cherokee, Jeep’s mid-sized SUV, has been at the centre of this kind of talk for a couple of years with its polarising nose finding little favour with buyers. Now, however, Jeep has taken steps to put the Cherokee back in the race with smart new exterior styling and a better all-round value-for-money offering. We put the range-topping Trailhawk through its paces. STYLING This new Jeep Cherokee debuts a more conventional look, forgoing the previous headlight design for an appealing LED

Infiniti

revamps Q30 and QX30 LESS IS MORE: Infiniti Q30 hatch and QX30 SUV are twins - with one standing taller than the other and sporting all-wheeldrive.

INFINITI has introduced new standard features on its Q30 and QX30 ranges. It has also reduced the number of variants and given them different model names. Just as importantly there are reduced prices to help increase sales – which have been disappointingly low to date. The Infiniti Q30 hatch comes in two just two, variants, down from five: an entrygrade Q30 Pure and an upper mid-spec Q30 Sport. The previous QX30 range has been trimmed to just a single model, the QX30 Sport. The QX30 2.0 litre Turbo GT Premium is now known simply as the QX30 Sport. The Infiniti Q30 2.0T Pure has a sporty grille and bumpers, black gloss mirror housings, body-coloured side sill

speed limiter, intelligent brake assist with distance control, blind spot warning, front parking sensors, a 360 degree around view monitor with moving object detection and intelligent park assist. The QX30 2.0T has a new design of 19inch wheels, intelligent all-wheel drive, offroad comfort-tuned suspension, comfort seats with adjustable head restraints, satin chrome plated inserts on the front and rear bumpers and satin chrome roof rails. The entry model Infiniti Q30 Pure price is unchanged at $44,900 plus on-road costs. The mid-spec Q30 Sport, previously $52,900 plus ORC has been reduced to $46,888 driveaway. Infiniti QX30’s price has been dropped dramatically; from $56,900 plus ORC to $49,888 driveaway.

extensions, and dark chrome dual exhaust pipes. It also features LED headlights, high beam assist, adaptive front-lighting system, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and a new-to-the-range rear view camera. Inside are DAB digital radio, heated front seats, a multi-function D-shaped leatheraccented steering wheel and Alcantara/ leatherette upholstery, a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, automatic dualzone climate controls with rear passenger vents, driver and passenger side seat memory and leather-accented features. The Q30 2.0T Sport has an even larger range of crash avoidance features than the Pure: intelligent cruise control with

Bluetooth pairing is uneventful and sound quality for calls is reassuringly clear. For those who can’t do without their phone screens, there is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well. You also get four USB ports, a 12V outlet and in a nod to technology proofing two USB-C ports as well. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The four-wheel drive Trailhawk is powered by a 3.2-litre V6 naturally aspirated petrol unit that provides 315Nm of torque and a useful 200kW of power. A ninespeed automatic gearbox completes the offering and while it is quite capable, you can sometimes hear it hunting for gears especially when you are going up or down a hill. As a point of difference in this accomplished mid-sized SUV class, the Trailhawk sports a proper 4WD drivetrain with triple diffs, low-range transfer case and hill ascent and descent control. The Select Terrain feature allows you to choose from Auto, Sand/Mud, Snow and Sport settings with the ability to lock all three diffs which makes its excellent offroad performance possible. SAFETY Standard safety inclusions have stepped up across the Jeep Cherokee range with the Trailhawk featuring many driver support aids. In addition to six airbags, parking sensors

and a rear view camera with guidelines, you also get autonomous emergency braking, active forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. There are three IsoFix points if you are carrying young children, although it is tricky to use all three at once. DRIVING Refinements to the suspension, chassis and steering equates to an all-round better performance for this latest Jeep Cherokee. On the road, it is easily manageable, accelerates well, is happy to change direction quickly and feels well balanced and relaxed.

Trailhawk

Given the constraints of an SUV, the Cherokee reacts well when pushed into corners, is decisive when following a line and never totters around looking for its feet. It is composed over poor urban roads, is manoeuvrable in tight confines and seems eager to please. It can sometimes take a tad long to get going and the gearbox can miss a beat. There are no disappointments to be had off the road either, with the Trailhawk impressing with its poise and fleetness of foot. The suspension offers 221mm of ground clearance and the steel underbody skid plates combine with the Trailhawk’s 4WD underpinnings to give it clear

confidence when tackling all sorts of terrain. While the course we tested the Trailhawk on wasn’t difficult, it was muddy and slippery and required a bit of thought to navigate. The Trailhawk just went about its business, crawling and scrambling without fuss and making it a truly fun experience. Despite its charms, the Cherokee is quite a thirsty unit. We struggled to get the official 10.2 L/100km and had to settle for 12.9 L/100km during our week in the seat. Jeep offers the Trailhawk with a five year/100,000km warranty, a fixed-price servicing program and free roadside assist if you service the car at a Jeep dealer. Service intervals are 12,000km or 12 months. SUMMING UP Jeep has upped its game with the latest Cherokee range. It looks and drives better, has an impressive inclusions list and in the Trailhawk, you have a car that can introduce you to real off-road adventures. How it fares against segment favourites remains to be seen but at least it has a fighting chance.

2019 Mercedes A 250 4MATIC

ENTRY LEVEL: New Mercedes-Benz A 250 gets more power and all-wheel-drive. MERCEDES-BENZ has added an extra variant to its A-Class range. The new A 250 4MATIC joins the A 200 but with significantly more power as well as the extra traction from all-wheel drive. The A 250 4MATIC develops 165 kW of

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY power and 350 Nm of torque, well up on the 120 kW and 250 Nm from the A 200. Transmission is through a 7G-DCT dualclutch automatic to all four wheels.

New Porsche 911: THE eighth generation Porsche 911 (type 992) had its world premiere on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show. The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines has been further developed and is more powerful than ever before, with 331 kW (450 hp) in the Carrera S models. This corresponds to an increase of 22 kW (30 hp) over the previous model. The engine sits behind a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission PDK as standard. As a result, the new 911s get from zero to 100 km/h in significantly under four seconds. The rear-wheel-drive Coupe needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive just 3.6 seconds. This makes them 0.4 seconds faster than the previous models. These already very impressive times can be reduced by a further 0.2 seconds when the optional Sport Chrono Package is installed. The exterior design is completely new, but of course is instantly recognisable as a Porsche 911. (If not the designers would now be working as assistant toilet cleaners in the darkest part of the factory). At the front, the body is 45 mm wider that in the previous generation. The bonnet

world reveal

By EWAN KENNEDY has a pronounced vertical beading that again evokes the design of the early 911 generations. The rear end is now the same width across all models to emphasise the slimline centre section. The rear is dominated on all models with full-width rear lights that are such a feature of recent models. There’s a significantly wider, variable-position rear spoiler. Significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminium to keep weight down. A completely new interior features straight lines of the dashboard with recessed instruments. Again, Porsche’s designers said the 911 models from the 1970s provided their inspiration on this. Alongside the central rev counter two thin, frameless freeform displays provide information to the driver. The centre screen of the PCM is now 10.9 inches, beneath it is a switch unit with five

The 4MATIC system has been upgraded for increased efficiency as well as to allow extra driver input through the Dynamic Select switch. 4MATIC components include the power take-off to the rear axle, which is integrated into the dual-clutch transmission, and the rear axle differential with an integrated electromechanical multi-plate clutch. Drive torque distribution is fully variable between front and rear axles. Depending on the driving situation, 100 per cent of the drive torque can be directed to the front axle or up to 50 per cent can be directed to the rear axle if the friction coefficient suddenly changes. A 250 4MATIC has a four-link rear suspension. Other standard features include 18-inch aero alloy wheels; MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia system with

intelligent voice control and displayed on a pair of 10.25-inch digital screens; satellite navigation; keyless start/stop; and wireless phone charging. Unfortunately we weren’t able to attend the launch of the new A 250 but will get into one as soon as possible and report our drive impressions. Safety equipment includes nine airbags; LED headlights; Active Brake Assist with semi-autonomous braking; Parktronic parking assist; active lane keep; blind spot assist with exit warning; traffic sign assist; adaptive high beam assist and reversing camera. At $49,500 (plus on-road costs) the A 250 4MATIC offers excellent value being just $2300 dearer than the A 200. Additional models, including an entrylevel A 180 and an enhanced A 250 will arrive here in February 2019.

IMPRESSIVE: Latest iteration of the Porsche 911 looks excellent.

buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions. Not surprisingly, the Porsche 911 takes the next step into the future with permanent connectivity as well as new functions and services. The standard PCM features include online navigation as well as various Porsche Connect Plus functions. In a world first, Porsche has developed Wet Mode which detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver. The driver can then set up the 911 for a particular emphasis on safety, by pushing a button, or using the mode switch on the steering

wheel (the latter is included with the optional Sport Chrono Package). The Warn and Brake assist system, also standard, detects the risk of collisions with moving objects and initiates emergency braking if driver does not do so. Night Vision Assist with a thermal imaging camera is optionally available for the Porsche 911 for the first time. New 911 Carrera S is available in Australia with a recommended price from $265,000; the 911 Carrera 4S from $281,100. On-road charges have to be factored in. Both can be ordered now and are due to arrive Downunder in the second quarter of 2019.

Limited Edition Lexus LC Coupe By EWAN KENNEDY

MY dislike of what I call the “500 shades of grey in car colours is well known to regular readers, so I’m delighted to announce that Lexus has revealed a dazzling yellow theme in a limitededition version of its LC flagship coupe. Zinnia Yellow exterior paint matched and Mikado Alcantara door inserts are major features. There is also the same yellow shade for contrast stitching on the white semi-aniline leather-accented seats, instrument panel, steering wheel and centre console armrest. The limited-edition variants are based on the Lexus LC coupe with enhancement

pack and available with V8 petrol and hybrid powertrains. As with every LC coupe, the premium equipment list includes 21-inch forged alloy wheels, head-up display, Alcantara headlining and 13-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround audio system. The additional features for the regular LC models bring a minimal $200 price increase. The LC 500 and LC 500h Limited Edition models are priced at the same $15,000 premium as the enhancement pack.
