FUTURE IS NOW: Lines of the Hyundai Ioniq are sleek and clean and don’t make the mistake of crying out, “I am different”.
HYUNDAI Ioniq is the South Korean marque’s indication of the immediate future in clean running cars. It comes in three stages of technology: The 2019 Ioniq Hybrid is powered primarily by a petrol engine, with a battery-powered electric motor providing assistance as required. Regenerative braking allows the hybrid system to recover much of the kinetic energy that is lost in conventional vehicles, using it to charge the high-voltage battery. In this mechanical layout the Hyundai is similar to the Toyota Prius models we have seen in Australia for many years now. Next up the rung is the Ioniq Plug-in. Again it combines a petrol engine with
By EWAN KENNEDY an electric motor. It can make electriconly trips of up to 63 kilometres. It can be plugged in to charge the high-voltage battery. At the top of the technology tree is the flagship Ioniq Electric, it’s a pure electric car with a real-world range of about 230 km and the capability for charging its high-voltage lithium-ion polymer battery to 80 per cent capacity in approximately 23 minutes. Every 2019 Hyundai Ioniq is available in Elite and Premium trim levels, and each boasts safety, convenience and driver appeal familiar from Hyundai’s

conventional-engine line-up. We have previously tested the hybrid model, this week’s test was in the Ioniq Plug-in in Premium trim. STYLING Lines of the Hyundai Ioniq are sleek and clean and don’t make the mistake crying out “I am different” as do the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf for example. The shape not only pleases us, but also people who are far better qualified. Hyundai Ioniq has won the 2017 Green Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
INFOTAINMENT Digital instrumentation can be customised to the driver’s desires. The infotainment screen is an 8.0-inch unit and is clear and easy to read and use. Satellite navigation, Apple Car Play and Android Auto are standard. An Infinity premium audio system with eight speakers and external amplifier offers quality sound. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Hyundai Ioniq hybrid has a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The powerplant is mated with a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

Renault Captur
TURBO: Renault Captur is a good looking French machine, especially in two-tone paint.
gets more grunt
By EWAN KENNEDY A NEW more powerful turbo-petrol engine is available in automatic versions of the Renault Captur Zen and Intens. Producing 110kW (150 horsepower) of power, and 250Nm of torque from 1600rpm the 1.3 TCe 150 engine was launched on the limited edition Captur S-Edition in 2018, this new engine is now available across all specifications, replacing the 1.2-litre turbo.
From page 1
Captur Zen also receives a multimedia system update that now offers smartphone users the opportunity to stay connected through either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Captur Zen auto with 1.3-litre turbo is a well-equipped vehicle, with two-tone body colour, 16-inch alloys, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors and cruise control. It has a recommended retail price of $27,490 driveaway.
Hyundia Ioniq
SAFETY In a high-tech car like the Hyundai Ioniq it’s no surprise the latest in active safety features are standard. These include electronic stability control, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution; autonomous emergency braking; adaptive cruise control; lane keep assist; blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. A reversing camera with dynamic guidelines is complemented by front and rear parking sensors. On the passive safety front are airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver, side airbags for driver and front passenger and side curtain units front and back. DRIVING The Ioniq drives pretty much like any other car … except for the near silence when running purely on electric power. It takes off smoothly and responds instantly to the throttle. Even when the petrol engine joins the action the noise level is only a little higher. We only had one occasion to charge the Ioniq Plug-in. That was at the Pacific Fair shopping centre close to home. We spent less than an hour there to do some grocery shopping and enjoy a cup of coffee and during that time we gained a further 15 kilometres of driving range. (Hint: a further benefit of the PacFair charging spot is that it’s only a few metres away from the entrance to the shops.) Starting with a full petrol tank and drive
battery our test Ioniq averaged just 3.2 litres per hundred kilometres during the 325 kilometres of our test. Much of that was on the motorway, where a hybrid is not at its best, which makes it even more impressive. The ride/handling equation leans towards the comfort side, which makes sense in a family hatchback. Steering has less feel than we like, other than that the Ioniq is a most pleasant drive. Comfortable front seats are enhanced by being both heated and ventilated. In summertime on the Gold Coast we really appreciated the ventilation. Indeed, there was temptation to add this feature in the Safety section of this review because it makes a huge difference. The second row is comfortable with enough room for three adults without too much of a squeeze. The typical Mum-Dadthree-juniors works well. The aero slope of the roof means ducking lower than some adults may like. A 340-litre luggage space is impressive for a car carrying large batteries. A 60:40 split-fold seat means up to 1505 litres is there for the taking. Just one complaint: why does this ultra-modern car have a ridiculous footoperated parking brake? SUMMING UP Hyundai Ioniq doesn’t just point to the way of the future - it has brought the future forward to today. Good looking, simple to drive and with minimal emissions it should be checked out by everyone.

Everest Makeover
offers mounting challenge to rivals
POWERED UP: Ford’s Everest large SUV is rock solid in looks and performance following a mid-cycle makeover. SINCE the Ford Everest was introduced in 2015, the large SUV has held a steady, if unspectacular, course picking up several 4x4 awards on the way and gaining seven seats as well as five. Also introduced was a rear wheel-drive model for the High Street adventurer. Now the Everest is about to hit the big time with the MY19 version taking on a new-generation powertrain which includes a bi-turbo, four-cylinder diesel engine mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission; a raft of the latest safety systems and convenience features, as well as a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and further service benefits. Maintaining its three-model lineup of Ambient, Trend and Titanium, pricing ducks below $50,000, with the Ambient rear-wheel drive, and tops out at $73,990, plus on road costs, for the flagship Titanium 4WD seven-seater. Everest Trend Bi-Turbo, with only a small rise in pricing over the preceding single-turbo model, was on test. STYLING Ford Everest’s rugged appearance have all three variants standing their ground with any rival, with the Trend taking on such features as 18-inch alloy wheels and running boards, while the square shaped rear of many traditional SUVs is left behind by Everest’s sculpted
By DEREK OGDEN tail lamps, with integrated LED lighting. Trend has switched to new HID headlamps with auto levelling function, LED day-time running lights, plus handsfree power lift tailgate. INTERIOR The cabin is a genuine seven-seater. Flexible second-row seats have 60 / 40 split, and power-fold third-row seats with 50 / 50 split, can be folded flat, providing 2010 litres of cargo space with a class-leading payload of up to 750 kg. Joining the first-time features for Trend are leather accented seat trim (third-row occupants miss out), leather trimmed gear lever and eight-way power driver’s seat with manual lumbar support. INFOTAINMENT Brightest feature of the system is the high resolution 8-inch colour touchscreen in the Interior Command Centre, one of the easiest on the market to view and operate. The up-to-date design of the instrumentation cluster, which incorporates dual 4-inch colour screens, is not too shabby also. Unchanged is an AM/FM/CD audio system with DAB+ digital and 10 speakers, augmented by AUX/iPod/ USB/SD card input ports. SYNC 2 brings voice control with simple commands for
many vehicle and convenience systems and emergency assistance connects drivers with emergency responders in a serious collision. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The new bi-turbo diesel engine in the Everest Trend and Titanium really is the bees’ knees, pumping out maximum power of 157 kW at 3750 rpm and top torque of 500 Nm between 1750 and 2500 revolutions. SAFETY Also debuting on the Everest Trend are pre-collision assist and pedestrian detection with the autonomous emergency braking system and traffic sign recognition. Carried over are seven airbags, including driver’s knee airbag. Dynamic stability control with roll stability control, ABS anti-skid brakes with electronic brake force distribution, traction control and emergency brake assist are constantly active when on the move. Parking is made easy with the use of a rear-view camera, plus audible sensors front and rear. DRIVING The bi-turbo motor is a delight. Overtaking on the highway is only a matter of easing the accelerator pedal forward and the power needed is presented smoothly and
instantaneously, making the sometimes ticklish manoeuvre a breeze. Gone is the fiddly old-style ignition key; replaced by push-button engine start / stop and new gear shifter. Fuel consumption topped 13 litres per 100 kilometres in mixed traffic conditions and 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. Generous ground clearance (225 mm) and 800 mm wading depth get the Everest ready for anything that might stand in its way off the bitumen. Shortcomings - short being the operative word – rest with the rear seats, the third row, when in use, offers little head room for an adult and limited legroom even for children, making more than short journeys a chore. Getting in and out is quite a step up too. However, occupants have the advantage of dual zone climate control and more than 30 stowage spots totalling 48 litres (the glovebox can take a 16-inch laptop), while sound insulating materials and active noise cancellation technology make for a quiet cabin. SUMMARY Turbo power, 10 speeds, plus significant Australian design, engineering and development, make the Everest, some would say, an irresistible offering.
