SLEEK: New Kia Cerato sedan has sleek lines that show many cues from the marque’s big selling Stinger.

All-New KIA Cerato tends to have been lost in the shadow of the stunning Stinger and the cute little Picanto at the moment. So it’s easy to forget that it’s the most successful car in the range in Australia in terms of sales, with around one in three of all Kias being a Cerato. The South Korean giant is certainly not going to rest on its laurels so it has just launched an all-new Cerato, the third generation, and the Australian importer has big hopes for it. The biggest news is the styling. This is no longer a relatively conservative family sedan, it’s a sleek machine that drew plenty of attention during our road test program out of Adelaide. Details from the very

By EWAN KENNEDY successful Kia Stinger are obvious and are most welcome. The dashboard is attractive with a minimalist shape that makes it look wider, indeed it gives the interior an enlarged look. The infotainment screen is a good size and easy to use. All Cerato grades have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Only the four-door Cerato sedan is on sale now, the five-door hatch won’t be here for several months; no date has been released at this stage. We are looking forward to seeing what the stylists have done with it. Interestingly, Kia Australia has given its

Kia Cerato latest Cerato models new titles – the Sport and Sport+ grades replace the Cerato SL and SLi. But don’t expect much from the sporty names as the word ‘sport’ has long ago ceased to mean sport in the car business. More about Cerato’s handling in the Driving section of this report. The entry level model retains the tag of Cerato S. Value for money continues to be a major feature of new Kia Cerato, with prices ranging from just $19,990 for the S sixspeed manual, to $26,190 for the Sport+ automatic. All prices are driveaway. New Cerato is slightly larger than the superseded one with more cabin space making it a genuine four-seater for tall adults. Three kids and mum and dad is

likely to be the most typical load and the Kia will handle that with ease. The tag ‘all-new’ isn’t quite accurate as the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, with 112kW of power and 192Nm of torque remains as in later versions of the gen-two Cerato. As is the six-speed manual gearbox. However, the six-speed automatic transmission is new and plays a major part of a sophisticated Kia Drive Mode Select (DMS) system which also modifies engine and steering behaviour. In a sign of the times the automatic transmission is more fuel efficient, 7.4 litres per hundred kilometres, than the manual at 7.6 litres per hundred.

Ford Transit Custom goes trendy VAN FAN: Just look at me now says the latest Ford Transit van to arrive in Australia.

WHO says one-tonne white vans have to be boring? Certainly not Ford Australia which is now selling the Ford Transit Custom one-tonne vans with a surprisingly stylish body, a more car-like look and feel to the cabin, and the latest Ford EcoBlue turbo-diesel engine. New seat designs featuring revised foam padding and geometry are car-like. Trim materials have been completely upgraded, with a focus on a quality appearance. This Transit’s dash area is completely new and makes a mobile office with standard Ford SYNC 3 that uses an 8.0inch touchscreen. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

All-New

By EWAN KENNEDY Voice activated features make for safer driving and DAB+ radio adds quality entertainment. Stowage is impressive with three open bins on the upper surface of the dashboard and glove box stowage capable of storing hanging A4 files in the lower closed compartment. There’s now a fold-out drink holder below the gear lever, as well as drink holders and two-litre bottle holders at each end of the instrument panel. The door panels have three large stowage spaces and a practical grab handle integrated into the door trim.

Kia Cerato

From page 1 The body is even stronger than before and considerable work has gone into stiffening it up to reduce noise, vibration and harshness entry, as well as to give the suspension a solid platform to work on. DRIVING Showcasing the company’s Australian suspension and handling tuning Kia took us on a long, demanding drive program from Adelaide airport to the Barossa Valley … the long way around. There were countless bends, climbs and falls, not only on sealed surfaces, but also on short stretches of dirt road. As well as some boring motorway work and peak hour traffic hassles. This family oriented sedan handled it all with ease. Tyre noise on coarse-chip surfaces was certainly there at times, but we’ve heard far worse. Steering feel is good, but perhaps a little lighter than we like. Getting good gearbox feel in a frontwheel-drive family car isn’t easy but the Kia is better than average. Ride comfort was generally good, but the semi-sporting nature of the setup

may not be to all tastes. If you’re a conservative driver who likes to keep the kids comfortable it might be worth doing your pre-purchase test drive with the crew on board. Engine response is good but there’s not a lot of grunt for hillclimbing and we frequently had to get down to the lower gears in situations where others could have held on to higher ones. That’s in the manual, of course, the automatic transmission quickly got the message we wanted more torque and dropped a ratio or two quickly. SUMMING UP Excellent styling will certainly draw many potential buyers into Kia’s showrooms Australia wide, but there’s little doubt the seven-year unlimited-distance warranty will. It intrigues us that no other maker in Australia has challenged Kia’s seven-year deal, some have dabbled around the edges, none has gone all the way.

Safety is of increasing importance to commercial vehicle buyers, not only the company fleet managers to which OHS is paramount, but also to the private guys and gals. The Transit Custom now offers Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEM) with Pedestrian Detection as part of an optional Technology Pack. The Pack also has Blind Spot warning with rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning with Driver Alert and Automatic High Beam. Reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors make parking simpler and safer. Transit Custom uses a Dynamic

Stability Control system with side-wind Stabilisation and Load Adaptive Control which helps improve drivability when the van is heavily laden. Ford Transit Custom is offered in Australia with a high roof option for the first time on both SWB and LWB variants. Factory-fitted windows are now available on both single and dual side loading door variants. Buyers will get a five-year, unlimited distance warranty across all buyer types, in Ford’s Service Price Promise, Loan Car Program, Auto Club Membership and Sat Nav MapCare updates which are available to eligible customers at participating dealers.

PEACHY: The upgraded Nissan Navara has looks, plus performance tailored for Down Under.

Home-Grown ‘Fruit’ for Nissan Ute By DEREK OGDEN WHILE not the biggest market in the world, Australia is seen as a trendsetter in sports utility vehicle performance development globally. So when the Nissan local team went to HQ with a request to upgrade the Navara ute, bosses were all ears. The result is the MY18 Nissan Navara, which was tried and tested extensively in, and exclusively for, conditions Down Under by Nissan ute experts from around the world. Upgrades apply to Dual Cab SL, ST and ST-X variants in the Australasian market. Particular attention was paid to ride and handling with a new dual-rate rear spring system. Also, the steering ratio on Dual Cab SL, ST and ST-X was modified to make the Navara more manoeuvrable. Three cabin styles are now on offer, including the Single Cab, King Cab and the most popular, the Dual Cab. There are 27 Pickup and eight Cab Chassis options and 10 4x2 and 25 4x4 variants. There’s a choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission, the latter with a manual mode. While prices generally remain unchanged, eight of the variants carry increases between $200 and $500, reflecting additional gear that is now standard. Pricing for Single Cab starts at $25,990, King Cabs come from $28,490 and the Dual Cab from $33,490. On test was a Nissan Navara ST 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel, sevenspeed automatic 4x4, Dual Cab Pickup at $49,690, plus on-road costs. STYLING This was down to giving the Navara a sportier look without wiping out its Nissan DNA - a balance between its tough truck

heritage and modern sports utility vehicle. This is illustrated by Nissan’s signature V-motion motif flowing via the sculpted bonnet into the front guards, a bodycoloured bumper, chrome grille and trapezoidal foglamps. Boomerang shaped lamps and daytime running lights integrate with a side profile that gives a more premium look to the vehicle profile. The ST Dual Cab carries an aerodynamic spoiler and a high mounted stop light can easily be seen from behind. INTERIOR Cabin focus in the ST is a 7-inch colour touchscreen, which includes satellite navigation with 3-D mapping. A unique feature is a rear power glass window operated from a switch on the dashboard, offering a long reach into the tub and increased cabin ventilation. Seating maintains a high level of comfort in varying conditions on and off road, while three rear seats strike a balance between leg room and body angle for maximum space. Storage consists of standard size cup holders and flip-up seating. INFOTAINMENT Bluetooth hands-free phone system is connected via steering wheel controls. Also on tap are Bluetooth audio streaming, cruise control, power windows and airconditioning. Further information is available through

Nissan’s advanced driver assist, which includes average speed, fuel and driving economy, turn-by-turn sat nav instructions, audio info and vehicle settings. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Across the range, power is supplied by one of two engines, the most popular being the 2.3-litre four-cylinder intercooled twin-turbo diesel with 140 kW of power at a low 3750 rpm, and 450 Nm of torque between 1500 and 2500 revs. There’s a choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission, the latter with manual mode. SAFETY The 2018 Navara has also upped the ante in safety with technology updates including a 360 degree Around View monitor, standard on ST-X grades, second row IsoFix child seat mounting points, on all Dual Cabs, and rear-view cameras are now available on all Pickup variants, while satellite navigation has been added to King Cab ST. DRIVING It’s worth shouting about but the new Nissan Navara is as smooth and quiet as any light truck and is better than most. The placid pick-up is a far cry from previous iterations of the popular workhorse, which Nissan would be the first to admit to being rather agricultural in character. Not that the new chum is a shrinking violet. Initiated by Nissan Australia, tested extensively in, and exclusively for, conditions Down Under by company Nissan ute experts from around the world, it was stacked up against its main rivals, the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado. Ride and handling came in for attention with a new dual-rate rear spring system incorporating an integrated lower and

higher spring rate that comes up with a comfortable ride unladen or with a light payload and allows heavier loads to be hauled without compromise in ride and handling, the last especially when towing up to 3500 kg. Also, steering ratio on Dual Cab ST was reduced from 21.5:1 to 19.0:1, so the steering wheel is turned less to get the angle, or degree of turn, from the wheels, while lock-to-lock steering wheel turns have been cut from 4.1 to 3.4, both making the Navara more manoeuvrable. The Navara boasts class-leading fuel consumption figures from 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. On test, the ST came up with 11.4 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres in highway running. Something to look forward to is that from June production, all Navara SL, ST and ST-X models will feature a digital speedometer included in the instrument cluster, and tie-down hook points have been either increased in number or repositioned to help secure loads. SUMMING UP The third update of the present generation Navara has put the ute back in the paddock of the best in breed, while the ST Dual Cab should go some way to maintaining its place as the most popular variant with its sub-$50K sticker.

Alpine A110 is all French flair By EWAN KENNEDY AN exciting new sportscar marque is about to land in Australia. The very French Alpine A110 is a highperformance coupe that’s built by a division of Renault, but operates largely in its own right. Alpine (say it in a French accent, ‘al-peen’ and it sounds beautifully evocative) dates back to the 1950s and has made some fascinating sports PDFKLQHV 7KH ² UVW $ PRGHO came out in 1961, ran for 16 years and had victories in many events, including the Monte Carlo rallies in the 1970s. Other retro cars - Fiat 500, Mini and VW New Beetle - have enjoyed a great deal of success and it will be interesting to see if other sportscar makers follow Alpine’s lead. Inside are aluminium brake and accelerator pedals and a footrest. A Focal audio system is there if you would rather listen to that than to the superb engine note we are told is very much part of the A110.
