UPGRADE: The upgraded CX-5 looks destined to remain a familiar sight on city streets.
Just enough change
to keep CX-5 fans interested By DEREK OGDEN either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive through a manual or automatic transmission. Last but certainly not least, there have been price drops across the range, Maxx Sport and Touring variants selling for $400 less than the previous model, while GT and Akera enjoy an $800 price cut. There are 12 varieties of CX-5 on offer including 3 Maxx, 3 Maxx Sport, 2 Touring, 2 GT and 2 Akera grades. On test was a CX-5 GT petrol AWD automatic, which sells for $43,590, plus on road costs. sports utility vehicles these days; a case of cookie-cutter cars. Mazda insists, however, that in most models it follows its philosophy of ‘Kodo – soul of motion’ design and the CX-5 is no exception. The development team, it says, focused on a Japanese aesthetic in which ‘mature physique’ and ‘elegant form’ are the keywords. No mention of aerodynamics and fuel economy. Still, everything appears in proportion, including 19-inch alloy wheels, making the CX-5 pleasing to the eye. INTERIOR A taller, wider centre console isn’t all that obvious visually, but it does work nicely. A two-step reclining mechanism allows
the rear seatback to be leaned back to 28 degrees, adding an extra level of comfort. Leather upholstery looks good and feels pleasant. Rear seatbacks have a 40:20:60 split. With a capacity of 442 litres the cargo area can take three large suitcases or four golf bags. The CX-5 GT features a power tailgate, the height to which it opens can be set using a button on the key fob. INFOTAINMENT A Multi-Information Display, to the right of the large instrument cluster, adopts a 4.6-inch colour TFT LCD, with related information grouped for quick and easy recognition.

MAZDA, who presented us in 2012 with a CX-5 package that was to become Australia’s most popular sports utility vehicle, has no intention of letting the top spot go, recently upgrading the mid-size wagon. The 2.2-litre diesel engine has been given a power and torque boost while the 2.5-litre petrol unit has adopted cylinder deactivation to reduce fuel consumption at steady speeds. Other updates to the petrol engine range have accounted for a 1 Nm increase in torque for the 2.5-litre variant, and a 1 kW increase in power for the 2-litre unit. The CX-5 comes with a choice of SkyActiv powerplants: 2.0L or 2.5L petrol engines, or 2.2L turbo-diesel engine. Each is mated to

Abarth 695
Rivale special edition By EWAN KENNEDY ABARTH Australia has announced it will import just 35 units of its 695 Rivale Special Edition models to this country. These are in celebration of the heritage of the Riva Yachts, prestige boats famed for their opulence, performance and sophistication. Available in both hatch and cabriolet versions, the Rivale Edition features a twoWRQH H[WHULRU ² QLVK RI 5LYD %OXH DQG 7ULEXWR
Ferrari Grey, reminiscent of Lake Iseo, where the Riva brand began. The Rivale Special Edition is based on the current Abarth 595 Competizione. Visually it stands out by having satin chrome front dam, rear bumper insert and on the rear three-quarter panels. There are Rivale badges on bootlid and rearguards. It rides on 17-inch Super Sport Grey alloys. Inside are blue leather seats and a wood ² QLVKHG GDVKERDUG ZLWK D FRORXU VSODVK on the instrument cluster when the engine

Just enough change to keep CX-5 fans interested From page 1 The Mazda CX-5 GT and Akera grades now offer windscreen head up display which shows information including navigation system turn-by-turn directions, routing information and speed limit information. MZD Connect makes it easy to access the internet and social networks. In addition to audio functions, it incorporates Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation, Aha for communication functions, including Twitter, as well as navigation. A premium Bose audio system has ten speakers, including a subwoofer. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Cylinder deactivation and a raft of new technology have the four-cylinder petrol engine putting out maximum power of 140 kW at 6000 rpm and top torque of 252 Nm at 4000 rpm. Mated with a six-speed automatic, Mazda’s system shuts down cylinders one and four in light-load situations, reducing pumping loss and mechanical resistance. When cruising at 40 km/h, fuel economy is improved by approximately 20 per cent, and by around five per cent when at a constant 80 km/h. SAFETY The Mazda MY19 CX-5 carries over active and passive safety functions of the previous model via Mazda’s own i-Activsense system. This includes traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and driver attention alert. Passive safety relies on a high strength with all-round impact protection, including
for pedestrians. Front airbags for driver and passenger seats are complemented by side and curtain airbags. The left and right rear seats have IsoFix child seat anchor points. DRIVING Fans of the CX-5 will not be disappointed in style or performance of the upgrade, for little has changed for the GT petrol AWD. There’s more pull to the vehicle through a one Nm increase in torque, for what it’s worth. Fuel economy is a winner, though, with the introduction of cylinder deactivation, when the engine is not under load. On test, fuel consumption broke the 11 litre barrier in city and suburbs in ‘normal’ drive mode, dropping to 6.6 litres on the open road, creeping up to seven litres in ‘sport’. Adaptive front lighting worked well in a range of conditions, including heavy showers. An already airy cabin was opened up further with more light let in through the electric sliding and tilt glass sunroof. However, with the first rays (and heat) of summer sun let in, it was back to the comfort of a closed cabin with the climate well under control. At night, the adaptive front lighting system showed the way with well-mannered attention being paid to other road users. SUMMARY More than 140,000 Mazda CX-5s have been sold since 2012, earning it the title of Australia’s most popular SUV for five years straight. With price cuts it appears well on the way to being the gift that goes on giving.

NOT SO MELLOW YELLOW: Bright yellow Porsche 718 Cayman is a visual treat.
2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS
THE Porsche 718 Cayman coupe, as well as its open-top brother, the 718 Boxster are now offered in high-performance GTS variants. Our test car for the past week was the Cayman. Living on the Gold Coast means that we would have preferred the Boxster convertible, but who are we to argue? To balance out the lack of a folding roof our test Porsche was finished in a brilliant daffodil yellow that almost demanded you wear sunglasses to avoid eye damage loved it. The new line of GTS 718 models have significant sports features that were previously options: Sport Chrono Package; Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear differential lock; and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the body by 10 millimetres. The 718 Cayman GTS is priced at $173,100; the 718 Boxster GTS at $175,900. On-road costs have to be factored in. STYLING The ‘718’ in the title is in recognition of the Porsche 718 sportscars that were victorious in races during the 1950s and ‘60s. It also ties in with the title of the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar. The latest Porsche 718 GTS has a new Sport Design front bumper, front light clusters and its bi-xenon headlights are black-tinted. Tinted taillights, black logos, black rear lower bumper and centrally positioned black tailpipes give the GTS an aggressive appearance. Black GTS logos at the base of the doors, and 20-inch wheels in a black-satin finish and housing red calipers add to the standout looks. Inside, the Porsche Sports Seats Plus with GTS logos on the headrests can be electrically adjusted two ways and provide increased lateral support and comfort compared to the standard 718 S models. The interior features Alcantara on the trim, centre console, armrests and steering wheel. POWERTRAIN Here’s where the biggest changes lie. Like all European engineers the Porsche guys and gals have produced smaller displacement engines to reduce emissions and fuel consumption without any loss of performance. Indeed, they try to increase outputs using the latest technology. So the Porsche 718 now uses four-cylinder
By DEREK OGDEN turbo power in place of the flat-sixes of the previous models. The turbocharged 2.5-litre GTS flatfour engine in 718 format produces 269 kW, which is up a healthy 26 kW over the previous GTS models with their six-cylinder naturally-aspirated 3.4-litre units. One of the biggest advantages of a turbocharged engine is that it can produce maximum torque over a big range. In the case of the new 718 series that’s all the way from 1900 revs to 5000. Meaning that in real life daily driving top grunt is on tap virtually all the time. More about this in our Driving segment later. The latest 718 Cayman is sold with a sixspeed manual gearbox, or you can select a Porsche DoppelKupplung (PDK) dualclutch automatic transmission for a crazy $5980 extra. That’s not a misprint – you’re asked to pay almost $6000 to drive a less entertaining car. Sadly our test car had the PDK. We would have preferred the manual even though we’re aware it’s not as quick as the auto. Somehow the DIY gearbox is just a much nicer way to drive. Also, we are well aware manuals are near the end of their life, so the more we get to drive before their sad
demise the better. SAFETY Like all good sportscars the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS has huge reserves of primary safety – the safety that stops you having a crash. Official crash tests are seldom done on sportscars so there’s no Australasian or European NCAP figure for the secondary safety of this hot Porsche. DRIVING Some may lament the loss of the flatsix naturally-aspirated engine in the older Caymans, but we really love this flat-four unit. It fires up with big revs in a racecar type snarl before settling down to a purposeful uneven idle. Not quite the famed dak-dak idle reminiscent of the three much-loved VW Beetles I owned in my early driving years, the 718’s is far more purposeful than that. (Incidentally, the latest Cayman 718 engine has exactly 10 times the power of my old 36hp Beetle.) With PDK automatic transmission and the Sport Chrono Package engaged the Cayman GTS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 290 km/h. Note that the official zero to 100 figure for the manual is almost half a second slower - bloody automatics, gearshifts are
quicker than the human ones… There’s very little turbo lag before the engine really gets on song, and once it’s there it has seemingly endless torque. It snaps up through the gears and you’re doing highly illegal speeds before you really expect them. There’s good space inside for two, with enough backrest rake adjustment for the passenger to settle down for a peaceful ride. As the engine is just behind the cabin in its mid mounted portion there’s obviously not enough space for even a minimal rear seat. Two boots, one front one rear carry a fair bit of luggage and there will be plenty of space for the aforementioned two folks in the 718. Handling is simply sensational because the mid-engine layout gives the 718 exceptional balance. It holds on in curves with nary a hint of jumping off line or suddenly hanging its tail out like big brother 911. And it’s more than happy to change direction on the seriously serpentine sections of our favourite test drive route. Comfort is generally good but some rough and ready bits of road do give you a jolt, and coarse-chip surfaces can set up quite a din inside the car. Similarly, motorway running on the notorious concrete surfaces of the M1 motorway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane mean you have to turn the audio system way up. SUMMING UP Loved this little very-yellow German sportscar and was sad to hand it back at the end of the test. Not only for the fact that it makes a pleasant change from the 500 shades of grey cars haunting our streets, but also because it’s just so well sorted in every way. SPECIFICATIONS: (Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 2.5-litre two-door coupe) ENGINE: Capacity: 2.497 litres Configuration: Four cylinders in line Maximum Power: 269 kW @ 6500 rpm Maximum Torque: 430 Nm @ 1900 rpm Fuel Type: Premium unleaded Combined Fuel Cycle (ADR 81/02): 8.3 L/100km CO2 Emissions: 167 g/km DRIVELINE: Seven-speed automatic

Is my Airbag safe?
By EWAN KENNEDY THE Queensland Government is showing strong and courageous leadership in issuing defect notices to owners of over 2000 vehicles fitted with dangerous ‘alpha’ type Takata airbags, a move that the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) welcomes and one that could lead to the cancellation of registration if ‘alpha’ Takata airbags are not replaced within 21 days. FCA chief executive Tony Weber noted that the decision is an effective response in the interests of the safety of motorists and passengers across Queensland. “We applaud the Palaszczuk Government for acting so decisively on this important public safety issue,” Mr Weber said. “The industry has been doing its absolute utmost to raise awareness of this serious public safety issue across Australia, urging people to take action and check whether their vehicles’ airbags are affected. “For ‘alpha’ Takata airbags, which pose the greatest risk, state and territory registration agencies can greatly assist the industry’s efforts to remove these vehicles from the road for rectification,” Mr Weber added. Queensland’s decision builds on moves in South Australia, and soon in Tasmania, to refuse vehicle registration to affected vehicles. The FCAI urged motorists to follow up and act on the information available via the website IsMyAirbagSafe.com.au/ or the Facebook page (IsMyAirBagSafe). Car owners can simply enter their registration number and state into the website and receive a response within seconds about their airbag status.
