SIMPLICITY: The Hyundai Santa Fe is an attractive package for the family and friends.
HYUNDAI SUV:
family tradition up to date By DEREK OGDEN capability for the active family. And, as Hyundai does with all its passenger vehicles, the new Santa Fe benefits from local workouts by engineers over thousands of kilometres, ensuring handling and steering of the type preferred by Australian drivers. Santa Fe is offered here in three trim levels – Active, Elite and Highlander. The Active comes with either a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, or 2.2-litre turbo-diesel motor matched to a new eight-speed auto. Upper level Elite and Highlander, the
test vehicle, take on the 2.2-litre turbodiesel and eight-speed tranny. Prices range from $43,000, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level petrol-powered Active with six-speed automatic, up to $60,000 for the Highlander diesel with an eight speed auto. STYLING The 2019 Santa Fe shows off Hyundai’s SUV-family face with the new brand signature Cascading Grille, with a special carbon effect finish and eyecatching split lighting, positioning the LED daytime running lights above the headlights. Out back, Highlander’s sharp LED tail lights, dual mufflers with twin tips for
diesel and a stand-out rear bumper design show the 21st century way for followers. Elite and Highlander bring additional depth to the defining front grille with a special carbon effect finish. Highlander features 19-inch Dark Hyper Silver 10-spoke alloy wheels. INTERIOR The remodelled cabin brings to Santa Fe Highlander a level of luxury second to none in any class of SUV. Quality of materials, including leather, and craftsmanship, such as double stitching on upholstery, left an immediately impressive mark on this user.

NONE of this smarty-pants SUV stuff, the Santa Fe is in the true tradition of the family wagon: it can carry up to seven people in relative comfort, as well as enough kit for everyone in the back. Not that the big Hyundai has not kept up with the times. The MY19 version, the fourth generation, which made landfall Down Under recently, is replete with the latest active safety features, has generous interior space, and is as friendly to the family as ever. Added to this is Hyundai’s new, advanced all-wheel drive system making what could have been an unwieldy wagon stable on uneven and slippery road surfaces and gives it a go-places

All new Nissan Leaf
LV VLJQL² FDQWO\ EHWWHU
BRIGHT SPARK: New Nissan Leaf is attractive and sticks to current mainstream thinking. WHAT better day to introduce the all-new Nissan Leaf to Australia than October 4? This high-tech all-electric Nissan, was launched 61 years to the day after another high-tech launch - the first ever satellite went into orbit. That Russian satellite introduced a major change in direction of the world’s future - and Nissan sees its Leaf in exactly the same light. The all-new Leaf, already the world’s best selling electric car, won’t be sold here until mid-2019 but a large group of journalists specialising in motoring, technology, climate science and lifestyle was treated to a preview of this second generation Nissan Leaf. Range is always the first question asked about any pure electric car. New Leaf has a real world driving range of up to 270 kilometres per charge thanks, in part, to the larger 40kWh battery. Given that the average distance travelled per day by those in suburban areas is about 38 km a Leaf will only need a full charge about once a week. However, the majority of owners are
By EWAN KENNEDY likely to top up their car overnight Charging times will depend on the charging connection and will range between 24 hours to less than 60 minutes with a fast charge. Note that charging times for Australian-spec vehicles will be confirmed when vehicles arrive here. JET Charge is Nissan’s preferred charger installer at Nissan dealers. It will also be able to fit out homes and other places with charging equipment nationally. Fascinatingly, though the Leaf is built in the UK some components are made at the Nissan Casting plant in Dandenong, Victoria. You will be pleased to know these Leaf components, indeed virtually all Nissan parts made in this country have a small kangaroo motif on them. Love it! Styling of the first Leaf was on the strange side, but the designers have given the new model an attractive look that’s
Hyundai SUV:
very mainstream. Inside there’s good legroom for four adults and five can be carried if you don’t mind a bit of squeezing in the back seat. The boot is huge, being particularly deep. This will make an excellent family car, though the price is likely to be significantly higher than for a conventional car in the same class. Nissan Oz won’t release details at this stage. Nissan Intelligent Mobility features active safety equipment such as a 360 degree Intelligent Around-View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Emergency Braking – with Pedestrian Protection, Intelligent Cruise and Trace Control and Intelligent Lane Intervention. The new Nissan LEAF has an improved 110kW of power, up 38 per cent on the genone Leaf, and 320Nm of torque (+14 per cent). We’ve yet to drive new Leaf, but that extra torque and the immediate acceleration it will provide should make it fun.
Nissan is making a big fuss about a feature it calls “e-Pedal”. This lets you drive simply by pushing down the accelerator to go faster and letting it up to go slower, even come to a stop. But every electric car we’ve driven already has this. Indeed it becomes a challenge as to how far you can drive without touching the brakes. Leaf will be sold from 89 Nissan dealerships Australia wide, well up from the 12 when the Leaf was introduced in 2012. New Nissan Leaf is available in six colours; Arctic White, Ivory Pearl with black roof, Magnetic Red, Pearl Black, Platinum and Gun Metallic. COMMENT Australia continues to be one of very few countries in the developed world with no government incentives whatsoever to assist buyers into clean, green cars. A pathetic situation that’s partly caused by Australian politicians who still deny that the climate is changing - I’m not making this up…
family tradition up to date
From page 1 An almost sophisticated tone is set by LED interior lighting, a larger, more versatile interior than its predecessor, with more luggage space with the third row up. A floating, central multimedia touchscreen presents a clear overview of the Santa Fe’s infotainment functions without deviating too far from the driver’s line of sight. INFOTAINMENT Highlander features a satellite navigation system with an 8.0-inch display. The system presents 3D maps and live traffic data and comes with lifetime map updates. A 7-inch colour TFT LCD cluster is centred on the instrument panel showing trip computer information – including a digital speedometer – as well as system status and visual alerts from SmartSense and other safety systems. A headup display can be positioned on the windscreen. The new Hyundai Auto Link connects the Santa Fe’s smart computer to a mobile phone via Bluetooth allowing owners to keep track of vehicle data, including real-time diagnostics, tyre pressure monitoring, driving history statistics, parking management, easy service scheduling and automatic access
to roadside assistance. Santa Fe Highlander has a wireless inductive charging pad (Qi standard) for compatible mobile phones, with an indicator lamp displaying the phone’s charging status. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel engine is available across all three Santa Fe trim grades. It delivers 147 kW at 3800rpm. With an electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger, it produces 440 Nm fro 1750 to 2750 revs. The combination is mated with a new eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. SAFETY The Santa Fe monocoque incorporates 15 per cent more high-strength steel than the preceding model. In fact, Hyundai Advanced High Strength Steel makes up 57 per cent of the body structure, which brings benefits in passive safety and chassis dynamics. Hyundai’s SmartSense suite included in all three Santa Fe variants. From the Active version up, Santa Fe occupants are protected by forward collision-avoidance assist, smart cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot collision avoidance assist and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, as well as driver attention warning,
high beam assist and lane keeping assist. Six airbags are fitted, including two curtain airbags that cover the entire side window area. DRIVING Getting in and out of the Highlander is at the fingertips. A new one-touch switch on the kerb side negates the need to manually flip and slide the second-row seatback, for easy access to the third row. A power release switch in the cargo bay allows one-touch folding of the secondrow seatbacks. Hyundai’s Smart Power Tailgate opens automatically when it detects the Smart Key. It can also be opened and closed at the press of the Smart Key button, or by pressing buttons on the tailgate. The Santa Fe is now larger and more flexible inside, with increased luggage space with the third row up. The secondrow seat bases slide through 30mm more than before, enabling occupants to balance space in the second and third rows if more leg room is required at the back. The turbo-diesel engine delivers in a quiet manner that belies its oil-burning origins. Mated with a new eight-speed automatic transmission Hyundai reckons combined urban / highway fuel consumption of
7.5 litres per 100 kilometres with Euro 5 carbon dioxide emissions. The test vehicle turned in figures of 10 litres per 100 kilometres in the city snarl and 6.2 on the motorway. As we are constantly being reminded, Hyundai modifies its suspension for Australian conditions to ensure comfort for families, adding a pleasant experience, for good measure. The MY19 Santa Fe earns a big tick for that. The HTRAC AWD system optimises traction to increase comfort, stability, acceleration and fuel efficiency. In Sport mode, it delivers improved acceleration by distributing up to 50 per cent of torque to the rear wheels. In Comfort mode, the system provides improved stability with up to 35 per cent of torque distributed to the rear wheels. And in Eco it sends the majority of engine torque to the front wheels to increase fuel efficiency. Comfort worked for me and my companions under most conditions. More playtime with the shift paddles could perhaps have changed that. SUMMARY The Santa Fe stands as testament to the advances made by South Korean carmakers over the years. The Highlander is an example of what can be offered in a family wagon. At 60 grand, it’s a steal.

By VANI NAIDOO LEXUS has answered the call of Australian upmarket buyers by extending its SUV range to offer up a more practical sevenseater. The popular RX350 has been made 110mm longer, a third row added and an L stuck on to the end of its name. The wheelbase has remained the same with the longer version keeping its junk in the trunk. Hail the RX350L then, an almost-new addition to a growing seven-seater audience, and an opportunity for the luxury brand to offer its customers a more complete line-up. The RX350L is offered as a petrol or hybrid in either a Luxury or Sport Luxury grade. STYLING The stylishly proud Lexus grille is hint enough at the RX 350L’s lineage, the sculpted lines and considered sweeps serving as a neat reminder. Interestingly, it is quite difficult to tell the 350L apart from the regular RX350, save perhaps for the trim above the rearmost window. It is quite apparent that the third row of seats, while adding to the Lexus’s practicality, are best reserved for little people of the kidling variety and even then, not for any great shakes of time. The third row is easy to lower and stow thanks to an electronic adjustment button, but access requires moving the second row forward and a fair bit of climbing and crawling. My kids loved that bit but then again, they are known to be a tad odd. The rest of the Lexus 350L’s interior is rather familiar with the now expected touches of luxury, excellent finishing and good materials choices. The cabin is ergonomically designed, with clear instrumentation and nice-to-touch dials and buttons. INFOTAINMENT This is one area in which Lexus RX350L could do better. The 8.0-inch screen in the Luxury grade is on the small side with no real wow factor and although resolution and colour is good, it could be better. The infotainment system is not helped much by the controller which is a little bit cumbersome and takes thought to navigate even after a few trips in the driver’s seat. We cannot fault the cameras which offer great guidance even at night when systems in some competitors seem to have difficulty. Bluetooth pairing is uncomplicated, there is digital radio, and rear seat passengers also have two USB inputs at their disposal. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Our RX350L was powered by a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6, a unit which is quite common to the Lexus stable. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers 216kW of power and 358Nm of torque, a noticeable handful less than the five-seater RX350. There is also a hybrid combination should that take your fancy. SAFETY Lexus has an enviable safety record and the RX350L benefits from a range of standard active and passive driver aides including autonomous emergency braking, radar active cruise control, rear crosstraffic alert, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring. Oh, and there are 10 airbags as well with the side bags extending along all three rows. DRIVING Front seats are both heated and cooled with standard inclusions also numbering keyless entry, tri-zone climate control, powered tailgate, adaptive high beam LED headlights and reversing camera. Storage, too, is well thought out with deep door pockets, useful compartments and boot space that is respectable even with all seven seats in place. A mobile phone charging pad in front of the gear stick is a nice touch.
Lexus
UPPING THE ANTE: Lexus RX350L adds even more choice to the seven-seater market. The RX’s charm lies in effortless driving experience with a comfortable fuss-free performance no matter the length of your journey. It does well over nasty bumps, is easily manoeuvrable around tight traffic circles and happy to stretch out on longer highway endeavours. This is no Lexus RC-F Coupe, so don’t expect those sporty turn-ins, lusty crackles and instant acceleration. What you have here is a composed and considered family chariot, an SUV that is quiet, luxurious and accommodating. And confident in its ability. Braking is reliable, it hustles along when asked and changes direction without too much fuss. We struggled to hit the official 10.2L/100km fuel consumption but were happy to settle for the 12.5L/100km that we did manage. Lexus offers a four year/100,000km warranty and Drivecare road side assist with the added bonus of service pick-ups or loan cars when having your car looked at. SUMMING UP The Lexus RX350L is more a five+two seater than a true seven-seater but it offers families flexibility, is well-equipped, very safe and luxuriously comfortable as well.
