Ŷ CROSSOVER: Mazda CX-30 has a bold front and a semi-coupe rear.

Mazda CX-30 first drive MAZDA CX-30 is an SUV that sits neatly between Mazda CX-3 and CX-5 in size and price. In times when fewer and fewer socalled SUVs are only driven by two wheels the CX-30 is offered with a choice between two and all-wheel drive. Interestingly its chief designer, Ryo Yanagisawa, who travelled to Australia for the media launch of the vehicle, calls it “a crossover SUV”. Mazda Australia chief, Vinesh Bhindi, says “All-new Mazda CX-30 is the perfect middle ground between small and medium SUV, giving customers a really sensible alternative that is equally stylish and innovative. “Mazda has used ergonomic driver research to deliver Mazda CX-30’s human-cen-

By EWAN KENNEDY tric cabin design, with premium materials and advanced technology adding to its comfort and safety package.” New Mazda CX-30 is sold in Pure, Evolve, Touring and Astina grades in Australia, with prices ranging from $29,990 to $43,490. Eight exterior colours are offered; Polymetal Grey Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Sonic Silver Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Titanium Flash Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica and Jet Black Mica. May we predict that the Soul Red Crystal Metallic will be the number-one choice? High spec interiors are offered in the Tour-

ing and Astina models; a Rich Brown colour scheme, paired with either Black leather or Pure White leather trim. Pure and Evolve have a Navy Blue and Black cloth combination. It has Mazda’s usual five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and five-year Mazda Premium Roadside Assistance. ENGINE / TRANSMISSIONS Power is provided by the latest iteration of two familiar engines – Mazda Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre petrol, with 114 kW and 200 Nm, or 2.5-litre petrol (139 kW/252 Nm). The smaller engine drives the front wheels, the larger the front or all four wheels. Transmission is by a six-speed automatic.

No manuals were considered as Australian imports as only about one in a hundred drivers in this class like to do their own shifting. Mazda's impressive Skyactiv X engine won’t be in CX-30 until second half of the year in Australia. INFOTAINMENT The horizontal 8.8-inch screen gives access to Mazda Connect infotainment system which integrates satellite navigation as standard, plus phone-mirroring technologies Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We find the screen far too skinny as it doesn't show far enough ahead for accurate navigation.

Nissan Qashqai N-Sport

2

Ford’s Puma is about to pounce Ŷ FUN TIMES AHEAD: Sleek lines of new Ford Puma are almost coupe rather than SUV.

Ŷ HEAD-TURNER: Hot looking Nissan Qashqai ST-L should be a winner. By EWAN KENNEDY NISSAN Australia has announced it will bring a tough looking Nissan Qashqai NSport to SUV lovers downunder. Nissan Qashqai ST-L-based N-Sport is limited to 600 units. It has 19-inch wheels; body-coloured bumpers front and rear that incorporate matt silver trim highlights. Bodyside mouldings with matt silver trim and wheel arches are also body-colour coded. Further exterior flourishes include silverpainted caps for the auto folding and heated door mirrors, while inside the headlining is finished in black. As well as that limited edition Nissan Australia has updated other Qashqai models, adding comprehensive connectivity and active safety enhancements across the range. For the entry-level Qashqai ST, additional equipment comprises Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatible infotainment system with voice recognition and digital radio receiver integrated into Nissan’s next-generation 7-inch screen. Qashqai ST+ model now has rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights with High Beam Assist, foglights, Intelligent Driver Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Warning technology. The Ti model’s safety has been en-

hanced by the addition of Pedestrian Detection (with Intelligent Emergency Braking) that operates at speeds up to 60km/h. Qashqai is sold in the Small SUV segment in this country, with no fewer than 29 vehicles on offer, so it's making these updates to keep it as competitive as possible. MODEL RANGE ST: $27,990 (manual), $29,990 (CVT) ST+: $31,990 (CVT) ST-L: $34,000 (CVT) N-SPORT: $35,000 (CVT) TI: $38,490 (CVT) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Nissan dealer for drive-away prices.

By EWAN KENNEDY FORD has announced its Puma will be on sale in Australia in the second half of 2020. A small crossover SUV Puma is described by Ford as an “urban SUV”; it will be a little brother to Ford Escape, Endura and Everest. It will be a competitor for the big selling Mitsubishi ASX, the Honda HR-V and the just released Mazda CX-30 Styling is more tall hatchback than SUV, with a low front and an interesting iteration of the current Ford grille and lights, bold side lines that join dramatic rear guards, cleverly leading to rear sloping roofline giving it semi-coupe silhouette. We like it in photographs but have yet to see it in the flesh. Puma was launched in Europe with only a manual gearbox, but presumably Australian versions will be an automatic transmission. “Puma will appeal to customers looking for a fun-to-drive, stylish SUV that’s loaded with smart tech,” said Kay Hart, president

and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand. “The Puma is a great opportunity for us to connect with Australian customers in a new way, and we’re excited that it will arrive alongside the new-generation Escape in Australian showrooms in 2020.” Further specification and pricing of the all-new Ford Puma will be announced ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2020. Stay in touch and we will publish them as soon as they are announced.

Mazda CX-30 first drive

Ŷ From page 1 Other than that the system is very easy to use – a strong point in all Mazdas as the company spent a considerable amount of time researching this matter. SAFETY There's a big emphasis on keeping drivers out of trouble if they’re paying more attention to their phones than to their driving. The CX-30 has Front Cross Traffic Alert and a Driver Monitoring system, which monitors the driver’s face before sending an alert. Other standard technologies include Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Smart Brake Support (SBS), Traffic Sign Recognition

(TSR) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) with Stop & Go. DRIVING There’s good space for four adults in legroom and head space. The smallish centre-rear seat is hampered for footroom by the central strengthening tunnel. The boot is a reasonable size but the semi-coupe roofline means it may not be able to carry items such as large boxes that can fit into more conventional SUVs. We’ve just spent two days and close to 500 km driving the new Mazda CX-30 in Melbourne traffic, on country roads on a roundabout trip to Cape Schank and on motorways and, frankly, came away even more impressed than we had originally

anticipated. Ride quality and interior sound levels feel as though they rival that of the Mazda6 sedan. That's not in back-to-back testing, although we may try to do a proper comparison later. About 98 per cent of the driving was done on sealed roads. Some were coarsechip surfaces, which did increase noise levels, but not nearly to the same extent as in most other vehicles. The short stretch of unsealed roads showed some deterioration in ride comfort but it was still pretty good and felt solid. We tested both the 2.0- and 2.4-litre engines. The former has just enough power and required some down changing of automatic transmission on uphill areas.

Try for yourself if you’re a keen driver and/or will be carrying several passengers to see if it's got enough grunt for your taste. The 2.4 is much nicer to drive, with the added torque making itself felt. Though we didn't do any proper back to back driving of the two engines we feel the 2.4-litre may not use any more petrol than the 2.0- as it's running more easily. Note that the AWD version weighs about 90 kg more than the front driver. SUMMING UP Mazda CX-3 is an extremely pleasant car to ride in and to drive. It's built to Mazda's usual high quality, looks good and, though not the cheapest in its class offers good value for money.

Nissan Warrior wages war on special forces By DEREK OGDEN NISSAN recently stepped into the hairychested premium ute ring, up against the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, HSV SportsCat, Mazda Boss and Toyota Rogue, Dodge Ram and HSV Silverado - with the Navara N-Trek Warrior. Unlike these pickup prize ďŹ ghters, the Nissan truck is offering something different – input from Aussie automotive product development and engineering consultancy Premcar - to take on the toughest conditions demanded by owners in the premium dual cab 4x4 ute market. Enhancements in wheel, tyre and suspension come up with better ground clearance and improved ride and handling, while wider stance, redesigned front end, plus new Cooper all-terrain rubber, complete a range of rugged visual cues. A carryover from the basic N-Trek black standard features, the Warrior includes fender ares, alloy sports bar, headlamp bezels, side steps, rear vision mirror caps with dark orange accent, rear bumper, front grille, door handles and roof rails. Partial leather accented seats carry dark orange fabric inserts and dark orange stitching throughout, as does the centre console, front door armrests and steering wheel. Front seats are heated. The Navara N-Trek Warrior comes in two versions powered by Nissan’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo engine, mated with either a six-speed manual, or seven-

speed automatic transmission. The test vehicle was the latter, which would set back the buyer $65,490, plus on-road costs. The manual Warrior comes in at $62,990, plus ORC. STYLING The White Diamond Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior test vehicle never stopped announcing its presence with decals everywhere. The decal package includes a hoopless, body-coloured steel bulbar with integrated 470mm LED light bar and a Navara decal taking pride of place across the tailgate. Dark orange accented fog lamp bezel has an integrated ‘bark buster’ and 3 mm stainless steel provides front underbody protection. Special design 17-inch black alloy wheels have been downsized from N-Trek 18-inch alloys to accommodate the larger, off-road tyres. INTERIOR Occupants will never be left wondering what they are riding in, the word ‘Warrior’ is plastered all over the place, from the embroidered front headrests to the orange accented oor mats. Some plastic components are speciďŹ c to NTrek Warrior INFOTAINMENT Occupants have the beneďŹ t of a smart key, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the driver gets help slotting the big bugger (nearly ďŹ ve-and-a-half metres long) into car park spots with 360-degree cameras.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The 2.3-litre twin turbo four-cylinder diesel engine delivers 140 kW and 450 Nm, putting power to ground through a seven-speed automatic transmission in the case of the test vehicle. SAFETY Though it's equipped with seven airbags, the big Nissan Warrior would not rate a ďŹ ve-star rating today, because of the lack of active safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and active cruise control. However, all Navaras have standard vehicle dynamic control, brake limited slip differential, anti-skid brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and brake assist. DRIVING The high revving engine produces enough power to handle various loads but with its highpitched note fails to walk the beat of the robust sporty ute. Wide tyres add road noise to the hum and a turning circle of 12.7 metres makes It hard work in tight carparks. Nissan puts fuel consumption at 7.0 litres per

100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle, which was held up by the test car turning in 10.6 l/100km and 6.4 l/100km respectively. A 40 mm increase in ride height comes courtesy of off-road capable springs and dampers, delivering 15 mm more, coupled with Cooper Discoverer AT3 All-Terrain tyres increasing by a further 25 mm. Ground clearance is a huge 268 mm, with improved approach angle of 35 degrees and widened track of 1600 mm. A matching full-size spare wheel and tyre tuck in under the tray. This set-up required some smart thinking, resulting in the towbar cross-member being engineered for this, as well as increased ride height. The Warrior retains the standard Navara’s 3.5-tonne towing capacity and a payload of 724 kg. SUMMING UP Who would have thought dual-cab utes would have become the best-selling vehicles in Australia? With this in mind, Nissan has a Warrior that could rattle a few of the enemy.
