TOUCHED UP: Minor changes to looks take the popular Tucson SUV into the new year.

Hyundai gives it a go with new Tucson starter By DEREK OGDEN steering engineers. On test was the new entry-level Tucson, a Go 2.0 GDi 2WD six-speed automatic, priced at $30,650, plus on-road costs, with SmartSense pack ($2200). STYLING Not much to see here: The hallmark Hyundai cascading grille has been redesigned, together with headlamps and daytime running lights. In profile, meaty wheel arches tie this frontal treatment in with a pleasing new rear, featuring sharper tailgate lines and refined new taillight layout. Tucson Go features 17-inch steel wheels

with five-spoke wheel covers and a matching full-size spare wheel. INTERIOR Inside, Tucson Go features a new floating tablet-style multimedia system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, bringing it in line with the whole Hyundai SUV range. Sitting on top of a redesigned upper dashboard, incorporating quality materials, it brings a new classy touch to the cabin. INFOTAINMENT Tucson Go features a 7-inch colour LCD touchscreen that allows a wide viewing angle. In addition to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system offers Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and AUX and

USB inputs with iPod compatibility. Absent in the Go is an inbuilt satellite navigation facility. This is in the realm of the Active X, Elite and Highlander and features an 8-inch satellite navigation system with SUNA live traffic updates and a 10-year Sat-Nav Update Plan. The screen features a smartphoneinspired display extending beyond the viewable area to emphasise its size and clarity. The satellite navigation system also brings DAB+ radio compatibility (in addition to conventional AM / FM radio), which offers a larger choice of stations, clearer reception and superior sound quality.

TO coin a phrase, it’s all systems ‘Go’ with the MY19 Hyundai Tucson adding a new eponymous entry-level variant to the company’s most popular sports utility vehicle range. Not to be outdone by the Tucson Go, the other models – ActiveX, Elite and Highlander - have also come in for a midcycle makeover, which includes up-dated interior and exterior styling with new wheel designs, and tablet-style multimedia with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range. And, as is the case with most Hyundai models, the Tucson ride and handling have also had the benefit of the ‘magic touch’ from Australian suspension and

Maserati 350:

a new price leader

BARGAIN: Distinctive Maserati grille sets the tone for the styling Italian SUV. MASERATI has introduced a lower cost Levante to Australia with a recommended retail price of $125,000. That’s almost $15,000 under the price of the Levante turbo-diesel. On-road costs from dealers and governments have to be factored in. It’s powered by a Maserati-designed, Ferrari built, 350 horsepower (257 kW) 500 Newton metre twin-turbo V6 that displaces 3.0 litres. It is a detuned version engine in the range-topping Maserati Levante S that has 430 hp (321 kW) and 580 Nm. Drive is through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels with a limited-slip rear differential. It may be down on power (these things are relative‌) but it can still make it from rest to 100 km/h in under six seconds (the Levante 430 horsepower runs in the low ² YHV

Levante 350 has adjustable air springs that change the ride height according to conditions and drivers’ demands, and Skyhook shock absorbers.

By EWAN KENNEDY Maserati Levante 350’s cabin has hand stitched leather trim and the dashboard LV ² QLVKHG LQ SLDQR EODFN WULP 7KH IURQW seats are heated and have 12-way power adjustment. Naturally, the traditional Maserati analogue-look clock takes pride of place in the centre of the dash. The infotainment system is Maserati MTC+ with satellite navigation and digital radio. Connection is available through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Levante 350 is also available with a choice of GranSport and GranLusso trim and equipment levels. These are priced at recommended retail $159,990 plus the usual on-roads. 7KH 0DVHUDWL LPSRUWHU VHW XS D ² YH GD\ road trip to proudly introduce its new 350 horsepower to the Australian media. This saw it driven from Sydney to Melbourne – the long way. An excellent scenic route through Bathurst, Canberra, Wagga Wagga and Albury.

On the road we found the drop in power from 430 to 350 horsepower hasn’t really taken away any of the sporting Italian’s excitement. Then there’s the sound, a rousing, purposeful snarl that demands that you put the windows down just to listen to it. Turbo lag is minimal and once you’ve passed that stage there’s a glorious surge of torque that gets you up steep hills as though they weren’t there. The eight-speed automatic transmission plays its part too, seeming to read the driver’s mind and getting electronic message from the engine’s computer to have it virtually instantly in the correct gear. We did drive on some sections of dirt county roads but there was nothing that would tax a Maserati Ghibli let alone this AWD wagon. Cornering power is pretty impressive for a vehicle with a relative high centre of gravity. While it’s obviously not going to challenge low-slung Maserati sedans and sportscars in the twisty bits it comes closer

Hyundai gives it a go „ From page 1 ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The 2.0-litre gasoline direct injection (GDi) engine, putting out 122 kW of power and 205 Nm of torque, is available in Tucson Go and Active X mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 2.0 GDi engine is also available in Tucson Elite teamed with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. SAFETY The introduction of a SmartSense safety option pack on the entry-level Go and Active X models makes advanced safety accessible on every Tucson grade. The SmartSense pack, available in automatic models for $2200, brings forward collision avoidance assist, blindspot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keeping assist and driver attention warning systems among the safety and convenience features. DRIVING Input by Hyundai’s Australian chassis, suspension and steering engineers has made for an easy-going character to the MY19 Tucson, even on some of the worst road surfaces around.

The 2.0-litre engine of the Go is well matched with the six-speed automatic transmission, while performance and fuel economy are adjustable through a drive select system. Eco mode really is ‘granny’ gearing with the Tucson a trifle tardy off the mark. Up to speed, it’s passable for town work, with a non-too-economical fuel consumption claim of 10.6 litres per 100 kilometres being only a minor consolation. Naturally, ‘Sport’ is a different story, with the free-spinning motor feeding up to 122 kW of power to the slick shifting sixspeed transmission giving a lively ‘step’ to the Tucson. A new LED headlight unit offers increased visibility through crisp white lighting on low and high beam, as well as improved durability, with the maker claiming an estimated lifespan four times greater than that of conventional halogen lights. SUMMARY The addition of the Go entry-level variant to the Tucson range can only add a further advantage to a class-leading SUV. The SmartSense safety pack is a $2200 no-brainer.

KING OF THE ROAD: Honda’s new CR-V is stylish without being over the top. JULIE and I were both overdue for a long relaxing holiday and the offer of D SUHVV WHVW RI WKH QHZ ² IWK JHQHUDWLRQ Honda CR-V arrived at just the right time. It would be hard to pick a better vehicle for reasons that will become evident later in our review. We took the Honda from our Gold Coast home to far western Queensland by way of the Warrego and Landsborough Highways through Roma, Charleville and Barcaldine to Longreach. We spent several days on Longreach, touring the Qantas Founders Museum, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre. Not to mention just sitting around, reading or not doing much at all in the wide open spaces. Then back home on the Capricorn and Burnett Highways through Emerald and Kingaroy till we joined the boring M1 Motorway and on down to home. This is a typical trip undertaken by many Queenslanders looking for peace and quiet in the wide open spaces of this great brown land downunder. We stayed in a farm, a guest house, cabins in camping areas and even a small mining camp. All good fun! Though off-road driving wasn’t part RI WKH SODQ WKH IDFW WKDW WKH JHQ ² YH Honda CR-V has a ground clearance of PP DOPRVW UHDFKLQJ WKH XQRI² FLDO 210 mm that’s accepted beneath a true

Two- or all-wheel-drive systems are offered, ours was the 2WD, we would have preferred the AWD, but beggars can’t be choosers. POWERTRAIN Power comes from a high-tech 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine. It has 140 kW of power and 240 Nm of torque all the way from 2000 to 5000 revs. The CR-V’s engine sits beside a CVT automatic that keeps the revs at exactly the right place all the time. DRIVING We lowered the beautifully engineered Honda backseats to give us perfectly Âł DW SODWIRUP VWUHWFKLQJ DOO WKH ZD\ IURP the tailgate to the front seats. Just behind the front seatbacks we placed a bed for boisterous Bailey our standard French poodle. Behind him was plenty of space for all of our luggage, including handle areas in the rear corners for items we didn’t want to move around. Driving on smooth roads the Honda ZDV TXLHW DQG XQÂł XVWHUHG LQGHHG WKHUH was near silence from the tyres on motorways. Some coarse-chip surfaces – and there are plenty of them in the RXWEDFN § DGGHG VLJQL² FDQW QRLVH EXW not to an uncomfortable level.

Comfort is good and the seats support well even over ultra long distances. Steering is light and responsive, but obviously I didn’t try any hard cornering as neither my wife nor our dog would have appreciated it. Having said that I’m sure it would be safe and forgiving in tight cornering. The cruise control is easy to set up and adjust on the move. For some reason every time I go into the dry areas of the Australian bush it rains. It’s happened to me in Alice Springs, Broken Hill, Nyngan, Tennant Creek and more. By far my biggest was WKH ³ RRG WKDW SXW WZR WKLUGV RI Queensland under water. This trip was no different and when we were on the Warrego Highway there ZHUH WLPHV WKH +RQGDV ZLSHUV ZHUH ³ DW out and we had to slow to 80 km/h. The band of rain covered a great deal of Queensland, so on the return trip a week later the paddocks were already greening up and the trees had a gentle, fresh, green tinge. Isn’t it great the way the Australian bush regenerates so quickly? (Several times over the years I’ve considered setting up as a professional drought breaker, but I’m sure that would immediately bring my luck to a screeching halt. So it’s best to remain anonymous and leave smiling locals unaware that I had passed through

dragging the rain clouds along.) Once west of the Dividing Range the speed limit is 110 km/h so the engine was sitting at 2100 rpm virtually all the time. That is neatly into the 2000 start of the maximum torque range. That torque is there all the way to 5000 revs, which is very handy when you come up behind a road train on a skinny road and want to overtake 53 metres of vehicle with about a hundred tyres throwing up dust and grit. The CR-V’s engine is smooth and responsive with a minimum of turbo lag. The transmission is always in the correct ratio – which is hardly a surprise given WKDW LW KDV DQ LQ² QLWH QXPEHU RI ÂŤJHDUVÂŹ between the lowest and highest ratios in the automatic. So good is the powertrain that we averaged a mere 6.6 litres per hundred kilometres for the entire trip of just over 2500km. An oldtimer we chatted to asked what that was in miles per gallon? Out came the calculator – and the answer was an amazing 43 mpg. Honda Civics used more petrol only a few decades back. SUMMING UP It would be hard to pick a better vehicle for our extended holiday trip to the far west of Queensland than WKH +RQGD &5 9 7KH Âł DW ORDG VSDFH LV arguably better than anything in its class and comfort is very impressive.
