ited kilometre warranty and five-year national roadside assistance, through Australian motoring clubs, standard across its vehicle range. STYLING The Haval H9 may be big, but it’s not brassy. Thanks to upgrades last year, the radiator grille eschews much of the chrome adornment favoured by rival SUVs, relying on five strips of the shiny stuff to provide a laidback canvas for the Haval nameplate. At the same time, the lower air intake was reworked for improved air flow into the engine bay and the front foglamps adopted a more circular design. Both grades come standard with all-new, five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.

INTERIOR Ultra occupants settle into Comfort-Tek eco-leather seats, while taking advantage of pleasant, well-lit surroundings thanks to a panoramic sunroof with an easy-to-use dial and retractable sun blind. Focus of the instrument panel is a large TFT screen – the result of feedback from Australian buyers – that displays a host of information including digital speed readings. Also shown are journey time, trip meter, average speed, average and instant fuel usage, driving range and the tyre pressure monitoring system, all accessed via a steering wheel-mounted switch.

Kia Seltos: advanced information By EWAN KENNEDY KIA Seltos is an all-new SUV from the South Korean manufacturer. Teaser information has been provided to the media in preparation for it going on sale in Australia in October. Seltos is smaller than the Kia Sportage but the dimensions are yet to be made public. Photographs show its lines are chunky and certainly standout from mainstream shapes in this hotly contested market segment. Of particular interest are the very high lines at the rear-sides. Kia tells us, “Seltos stands apart from its rivals thanks to its sophisticated, sporty design and the space and capabilities of a traditional SUV – all in a compact package.” The reference to ‘traditional SUV is interesting because many in this field are really only hatchbacks with taller bodies. Having said that, Seltos is offered with two-wheel-drive (the front wheels) as well as AWD. As with all Kia models in Australia, the ride and handling characteristics of the car have been optimised to provide the experience Australian drivers have come to expect. The Seltos has a range of newly developed powertrains. Australians will have choice between a 2.0-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol mated to a CVT and driving through the front wheels. As well as a 1.6-litre Turbo GDi coupled to a seven-speed doubleclutch automated manual and AWD. Drivers can choose from ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’ and ‘Sport’ modes. The car’s large 10.25-inch screen gives advanced split-screen functionality. This allows users to control or monitor numerous vehicle features. The driver can choose to have a single display (such as navigation) or combine different elements on-screen. The Seltos offers Kia’s innovative UVO CONNECT telematics system. This uses its own SIM card to retrieve and update live

data during a drive, such as traffic information, weather forecasts and points of interest. It is designed for compatibility on Android and Apple smartphones. The UVO system is free to users for the first three years, and includes stolen vehicle notification and tracking, safety alerts, auto collision notification and emergency assistance. Kia Seltos is fitted with six airbags, as well as a suite of electronic vehicle safety systems. These include Kia’s Vehicle Stability Management system, incorporating traction control and electronic stability control. Anti-lock Braking System, a Traction Control System, a Brake-force Assist System and Hillstart Assist Control are standard. Stay tuned for more information as Kia Australia provides it to the media, as well as for driven impressions when we get ourselves behind the wheel.

Haval H9 heavy lifting; prices stay put Ŷ From page 1 To the left are a traditional analogue tachometer, with analogue temperature and petrol gauges on the right. INFOTAINMENT An 8-inch TFT LCD touchscreen takes centre stage, linking with GPS satellite navigation. There’s a 10-speaker Infinity audio (4 tweeters, 4 mid-range, 1 centre channel, 1 sub-woofer) but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Following the engineering trend for smaller capacity, forced induction engines, the H9 makes use of a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, producing peak power of 180 kW at 5500 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at an easily accessible 1800 to 4500 revs. Performance and fuel economy are optimised by hooking up to an award-winning ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, boasting low range and teamed with an Eaton locking rear differential, offering a 2500 kg braked trailer towing capacity. SAFETY Passive safety is taken care of by dual front and front-side airbags, as well as curtain bags across all three rows. To the already standard reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors is now added autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning.

DRIVING Considering the heft it has to handle, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is surprisingly supple, even when under load. Along with fuel efficiency, modern turbocharging can take the credit here. Overtaking on the highway is particularly impressive. A major downside was some hesitation on take-off with the stop / start system slow to engage. Petrol consumption on the combined urban / highway cycle in the test Haval H9 was recorded at up to 17 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and a miserly 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres on a motorway run. Haval’s proven All-Terrain Control System optimises off-road performance in sand, snow or mud, while 4L is for the toughest conditions, or when maximum traction is required. Auto mode automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation, while Sport is for the driving enthusiast with the ZF transmission holding lower gears for longer. At speeds below 80 km/h, it locks out the two overdrive gears, making it ideal for urban driving. Haval spruiks the H9’s seven-seat capacity. The sidestep and grab handles were welcome when getting in and out of the high-riding H9 Ultra test vehicle. However, the third row does come with its limitations. The seats are folded easily enough electrically by means of push buttons behind the rear doors. However, getting in and out of them does pose some problems: access through the rear doors is skinny and tangling with the second-row seatbelts is an unwelcome trial.

The seats themselves have their disadvantages, the high floor forcing occupants to sit in an almost head-between-knees position. Children and smaller folk fare better. Also, with the seat backs in the upright position cargo behind is almost totally eliminated, with space only for briefcase or laptop thickness cargo standing upright. SUMMING UP The skinny pricing and extended sevenyear warranty make the Haval H9 an attractive proposition. Any lingering doubts about quality and reliability are steadily shrinking at the hands of some adept Chinese manufacturing and the H9 is poised to take the challenge up to some stiff competition in a densely populated segment.

Nissan Juke Nismo brings back the fun to driving

Ŝ EXCITEMENT PLUS: Nissan Juke Nismo RS has an aero body package to give it even better handling. WITH SUVs so popular nowadays as they make sense, with a few exceptions they aren’t especially exciting to drive. So it was great to be able to spend a week behind the spritely little Nissan Juke Nismo RS. Although Juke is officially listed as an SUV in Australia it looks like, and performs like, what used to be called a hot hatch. Hot SUV? No, it just doesn’t sound right. The name Nismo is an abbreviation of Nissan Motorsport International Limited and is the inhouse tuning, motorsports and performance division of Nissan. While Nismo’s core business is motorsport much of the technical improvements from its racing experience such as upgraded engine performance, handling and aerodynamics gets passed down and used in the production of enhanced versions of Nissan street cars. These include the three Nismo models that are currently on sale in Australia: GT-R, 370Z and Juke. With its red highlights including the side mirrors and large 18-inch wheels with red-painted brake calipers it really is a head-turner out on the

er and 250Nm of torque, up by 17kW and 10 Nm. These improvements rounded up to around 15 per cent have been achieved by optimising the engine control unit (ECU) settings and using a revised exhaust system with a larger main tune diameter and revised baffling. The engine’s connecting rod durability has also been improved for use with higher torque settings on the manual transmission, along with a strengthened clutch cover and dual mass ywheel. Juke Nismo RS manual has a shorter ďŹ nal drive ratio for harder acceleration. A limited slip differential directs more power to the front wheel with the most traction to maintain acceleration during cornering. The CVT Nissan Xtronic system has eightstep gearing, up from the six-step standard system.

The bulked-up Alcantara leather steering wheel and slick gear levers makes sure that you change gears more often than you really need to but that’s all part of the fun. Despite the extra height and bulk the Nismo handles almost as well as a typical sporty hatchback. The body and chassis reinforcements that have been added to the Nismo over the standard Juke have given it a noticeable improvement to its rigidity, steering precision and response.
