Ŷ STYLE TWEAKS: Kia Rio GT-Line is a neat little semiperformance machine.
2019 Kia Rio GT-Line By ALISTAIR KENNEDY The new GT-Line was the big news from the upgrade and is our review model here. STYLING All Rio models get a wider and narrower version of the Kia ‘tiger-nose’ grille that to our eyes further enhances the little hatch’s already attractive appearance. Rio comes with a choice of six colours. Our test GT-Line came in Mighty Yellow with black mirror caps and black details in the sills and around the rear lights. It sits on 17-inch alloy wheels. The name seemed to work because it certainly attracted a mighty number of admir-
ing looks, especially in the carpark of our local soccer field with its perfect match to the club’s yellow and black colours. The GT-Line comes with a body kit that includes an enhanced radiator grille, rear diffuser, twin exhaust, rear spoiler, solar glass on the windscreen and front windows, and privacy glass on the rear doors and tailgate. The S and Sport models get 15- and 16inch alloys. All three have a space-saver spare wheel/tyre. INTERIOR Kia interiors are invariably neat and functional with most things in the right place. Rio’s cabin is stylish and quite sophisticated for such a small car, with an instrument cluster
and colour LCD screen that blend in nicely. The GT-Line adds leather trim on the steering wheel and gear shifter; a carbon-fibre look dash fascia; enhanced instrument cluster; flat-bottomed sports steering wheel; alloy sports pedals. Taller drivers will be pleased to hear that there’s no sunroof option and this together with low-set seats means there’s plenty of head room. Rear legroom is reasonable providing the front occupants don’t demand maximum space. There are drink holders in every door with the front ones able to accommodate 1.5-litre bottles.

KIA Rio is a small five-door hatch that’s been around since the start of the millennium and has been slugging it out with some of the big hitters in what is one of the most hard-fought sales segments in Australia, sub$25,000 small cars. The latest, fourth-generation, version of the Rio first arrived here in January 2017 and received a major upgrade in November 2018 with styling tweaks and updated drivetrains including an all-new turbo-petrol engine. Three models are offered, Rio S and Sport come with a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine mated to either manual or automatic transmission and the all-new 1.0-litre threecylinder turbo-petrol GT-Line with a sevenspeed dual-clutch auto.

Ford Everest now has autonomous emergency braking on all models By EWAN KENNEDY FORD'S large SUV, the Everest, has been updated to include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection as standard from May 2019 production. The Everest line-up now sees a high level of equipment across all models, from the five-seat Ambiente through to the sevenseat Everest Titanium with its Bi-Turbo powertrain, which has seen price adjustment below the Luxury Car Tax threshold. “The Everest has won many accolades, and we’re proud of that, but we are always looking to add the latest technology and the most advanced features for our customers,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand president and CEO, Kay Hart. “The addition of AEB on every model is part of our commitment to constantly improve our products, services and ownership experiences.” Adding further cost of ownership advantages for Everest owners is an expansion of the Ford Service Benefits program. For the first four years/60,000km (whichever comes first), eligible customers will be able to service their Everest for a maximum recommended price of $299 (incl GST) per A or B logbook service at participating dealerships. This further demonstrates the strength of Ford Service Benefits, including the added value of a Service Loan Car, Auto Club membership (including Roadside Assistance), Satellite navigation updates and a Vehicle Report Card.
Ŷ : SAFETY FIRST: Ford Everest is a spacious SUV
2019 Kia Rio GT-Line Ŷ From page 1 ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The entry-level Rio S and mid-spec Sport retain the previous unchanged, with the 74 kW / 133 Nm 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine. Both are available with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, fourspeed in the S and six shifts in the Sport. The top of the range GT-Line adopts the Euro trend of smaller capacity turbocharged engine. In this case it’s a sporty 1.0-litre threecylinder turbo-petrol with 88kW of power and 172Nm of torque. It drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. SAFETY Standard safety features across the Rio range include six airbags; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; stability and traction control; hill-start assist; childproof rear door locks; reverse parking camera; rear parking sensors; and IsoFix child seat mounting on the two outer rear seats. In a first for the Rio, the GT-Line adds automatic emergency braking; lane keeping assist; driver attention alert; static bending headlights; LED front foglights, rear combination lights; position lamps; and daytime running lights. Rio S and Sports also have DRLs but they are halogen. The latest Rio is safer under the skin being constructed with more advanced high strength steel than previously. Not only does this provide greater crash protection it also has the added benefit of improved stability and handling. INFOTAINMENT Features are the same across all three models with a seven-inch high-definition LCD touchscreen, six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth (pairing took less than minute), Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The USB and Aux sockets are located in the front console
immediately above an appropriately sized smartphone storage space. Note that you’ll need that smartphone if you want satellite navigation, there is no embedded option. DRIVING Drivers without experience of the new small-capacity turbocharged engines will need to adapt because there is some turbo lag on takeoff. However, firm acceleration will quickly push through that early stage and provide plenty of thrust helped along by the new dual-clutch transmission that responds nicely to the throttle and will quickly get the engine into the right revs. Around town the GT-Line zipped along very nicely and it kept up with traffic throughout the motorway segment of our drive without any problem, overtaking sharply when required on country roads. As with most Kias there has been significant local input into Rio’s suspension set-up and it shows, especially in the GT-Line with steering that's nicely weighted and provides good feedback. The ride is quite firm but not uncomfortably so although the use of low-profile tyres did contribute to a fair bit of road noise intruding into the cabin on harsh road surfaces. SUMMING UP The use of the ‘GT’ tag is a bit cheeky given that the letters stand for Grand Touring but we’re used to marketers taking such liberties nowadays. Although competing carmakers are beginning to close the gap Kia has stolen a march on them with its breakthrough seven-year unlimited kilometre and this together with seven-year capped price servicing and seven-year roadside assist add significant value to Rio’s already competitive pricing. It will be interesting to watch what proportion of Rio buyers opt for the GT-Line. At $23,090 it’s $4000 more than the entry-level S automatic but with it is a very distinctive and

Mitsubishi ASX 2010 - 2018 MITSUBISHI ASX has just entered its 10th year on the Australian market, that's an eternity by today’s standards of new vehicle releases. But with some upgrades and attractively low prices it continues to be a big seller on the new car market. Meaning there are plenty on the used car scene - take advantage of this by shopping around the many on offer. The Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation has been a major player in the heavy duty Australian 4WD and SUV field for many decades. However, the subject of this week’s used-car review, the Mitsubishi ASX (Active Sports Crossover) is aimed more at on-road use than tackling the Aussie bush. It can be used on dirt roads, forest trails and the like if you know what you're doing. That is if you get one with all-wheel-drive, the two-wheel-drive (front wheels) ASX really should be used only on sealed roads, though smooth, dry, dirt roads can usually be tackled without any real hassles. Although it’s based on the same platform as the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV the ASX has shorter overhangs and a more stylish look. It began with the so-called jet-fighter grille, but that shape wasn’t particularly well received, so in August 2012 it received a major facelift with softer looks. Another facelift in January 2015 gave it a slightly different appearance, as did one in November 2016. September 2017 saw a strong makeover externally and upgrades to the infotainment system. The ASX can carry four adults, with some sharing of legroom being required if tall travellers are being transported. As a small family SUV - Mum, Dad, three juniors - it works nicely. The boot is a good size with a volume of 426 litres when the rear seatback is upright and 1193 litres with the seatbacks folded. The ASX is easy to drive and while not sporting it handles normal day-to-day driving competently. Ride comfort is good and the suppression of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) works well and was improved several times during its life. Mitsubishi ASX comes with the choice of petrol and diesel engines. The diesel is as good as any of those found in current generation Eu-

By EWAN KENNEDY ropean SUVs and reflect Mitsubishi’s expertise in the truck business. However, while reasonably popular in the early days diesels where discontinued in Australia in 2017 due to a lack of buyer interest. Manual and automatic transmission are offered with both engine types and tend to be more common in diesels. Manuals are becoming increasingly unpopular in all but sportscars so DIY gearchanging in ASXs may not retain their value as well. Though Mitsubishi hasn’t built cars in Australia for quite a while, it’s still well represented here, with plenty of dealers in the metro areas and a fair smattering in country cities and larger towns. Spare parts prices are generally reasonable and we have heard of no real holdups in delivery. Insurance costs are pretty reasonable as most companies regard the ASX as a family hatch with no sporting overtones. Mitsubishi ASX has a five-year / 100,000km warranty, not unlimited distance as is becoming increasingly common these days. Used cars may carry the balance of the warranty, but check with dealers in case it no longer meets all requirements. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Given its extended period of time on the market it's no surprise that there have been quite a few recalls. Go to the ACCC at: www.productsafety.gov.au/products/transport/cars/ then click on Mitsubishi. Check the remote control key, if fitted, works correctly on the doors and the engine-startup. If a sunroof is fitted give it a good solid wiggle to make sure it hasn’t come loose. If it has, make sure a dealer fix is carried out before you buy the car. It’s unlikely an ASX will ever have been offroad, but if you suspect one has it’s perhaps best to give it a miss and opt for one of the ninety-something per cent that have always been on sealed surfaces. Signs of off-road use are scratches on the paint of the bumper corners, the guards and the doors.

Underfloor damage is a sign to look for a different vehicle, though if the price is very favourable and a professional mate can repair it you could get a bargain. Check the engine starts easily, early morning when it’s stone cold is ideal. The diesel won’t kick over as quickly as the petrol but shouldn't lag by too much. Look over the seats for signs of hard wear, particularly in the back. Similarly look for rough treatment in the boot. If you haven’t experienced a CVT automatic transmission before it may feel and sound a bit odd. Basically it’s changing gears all the time through a virtually infinite number of ratios to keep the engine in the most efficient range. Once you get used to it you will really appreciate its fuel savings. HOW MUCH? Budget on spending from $5000 to $9000 for a 2010 Mitsubishi ASX 2WD; $7000 to $11,000 for a 2010 AWD; $9000 to $14,000 for a 2012 Aspire AWD; $11,000 to $16,000 for a 2013 Aspire AWD or a 2014 XLS 2WD; $14,000 to $20,000 for a 2015 XLS AWD; $16,000 to $22,000 for a 2016 XLS AWD or a 2018 LS 2WD; $19,000 to $27,000 for a 2017 XLS AWD; and $22,000 to $30,000 for a 2018 XLS AWD.
