TRENDSETTER STILL: New Corolla Hybrid looks great and is excellent value for money.

maximum 90 kW of power and 207 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is listed at 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres. The batteries for the electric motor can be charged by the petrol engine when it no longer needs full power to drive the vehicle and also by the braking system that takes the energy from the car as it slows down or goes downhill. This is probably the biggest attribute of a hybrid vehicle in the real world. The Toyota CVT has seven preset overrides via the gear shift lever with the SX and ZR also getting steering wheel shift paddles. There are three driving modes: ECO, Normal and Sport.

Ascent Sport and SX have 16-inch alloy wheels with ZR jumping up to 18-inch. All have a temporary spare wheel. The interior is neat and tidy with everything in the right place. Seats are wide, comfortable and supportive. Headroom is fine in the front seats but marginal for taller rear seat passengers. There’s no sunroof option which would otherwise reduce space. ENGINE / TRANSMISSION Corolla Hybrid comes with the same powertrain as the current Prius. Called the Hybrid Synergy Drive it uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle petrol engine supported by a nickelmetal hydride battery to put out a

the rest of the range: Ascent Sport, SX and ZR. STYLING Apart from a ‘hybrid’ badge at the rear there is no visual difference between Corolla Hybrid and the rest of the range. Which makes sense because to our eyes this is the best-looking Corolla yet. It’s longer, lower and wider than before with a more coupe-like silhouette which combine to give a much bolder stronger road presence. All models get LED headlights with automatic high beam, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights.

IF ever there was a car that needed no introduction then it’s the Toyota Corolla. In production continuously since 1966, and with sales in excess of 44 million, it is the biggest selling car of all time. In mid-2016 Toyota added a petrol / electric hybrid variant to the Australian Corolla range for the first time. The Japanese giant was one of the pioneers of volume production vehicles using this fuel-saving technology with its Prius hatchback which arrived here in 2001. The original Corolla Hybrid only came in the base grade format but now, as part of the MY2018 upgrade, it is available in the same three variants as

New Ford Mustang ecoboost

MINI-MUSCLE: Mustang EcoBoost has a lower, remodelled bonnet and a tougher looking grille. A SIGNIFICANTLY upgraded Ford Mustang GT V8 was launched four months ago, now it has been joined by the revised lower-cost Ford Mustang EcoBoost. Though the thought of a four-cylinder engine in a Mustang is anathema to some, there’s a lot to be said for the driving dynamics of a lighter, better balanced Mustang. Mustang EcoBoost adds an advanced 224kW powertrain to that unmistakable, iconic Mustang design. The 2019 Mustang EcoBoost has a high-tech direct-fuel-injection 2.3-litre that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger. Producing 224kW of power and 441Nm of torque it is mated to a six-speed manual or an optional new 10-speed paddle-shift automatic. The turbocharger has been re-tuned for optimal spooling to deliver low-end responsiveness Biggest feature in the EcoBoost, as well as the V8 GT, is Ford’s new design 10-speed

By EWAN KENNEDY SelectShift automatic. It features a wide ratio span and optimised gear spacing. Compared to the superseded six-speed auto, the new 10-speed transmission improves shift times, low-speed tip-in response and reduces friction losses. Ford’s six-speed manual, again for both engines, has been upgraded for optimal torque, and now includes a dual-mass flywheel to deliver more efficient clutch modulation, delivering improved higher torque capability. Even its exhaust note can be adjusted using a fully variable soundtrack to match the entire acceleration range. Four modes are on offer: Normal, Quiet, Track and Sport, tailoring the exhaust note for every occasion. Available in convertible and sleek Fastback body styles, Mustang EcoBoost has a lower, remodelled bonnet and a tougher looking grille. They have a

new bumper, fascia and an optional performance spoiler. It rides on 19-inch black alloys, though which the big Brembo brakes are clearly highlighted. For the first time, the entire Mustang line-up features all-LED front lights and there are revised LED taillights. A black rear diffuser houses quad-exhausts, with rolled finishing. Inside are higher quality finishes and smart design elements on the dash and console coverings and there’s a revised spun aluminium look dash applique. A new 12-speaker 1000-Watt B&O Play audio system is standard on Mustang EcoBoost. It drives through a 10-channel amplifier that has been specifically tuned for the car. New technology updates for Mustang include a 12.4-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster with displays that can be customised to the displays for Normal, Sport and Track modes. Drivers can also choose colour and gauge layout settings.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid From page 1 SAFETY In addition to standard safety features (seven airbags, enhanced ABS brakes, stability and traction control) all Corolla models get the Toyota Safety System which includes autonomous emergency braking; emergency brake assist; pedestrian and cyclist detection; active cruise control; lane departure alert; and lane trace assist which, for the inattentive driver, provides steering assist when necessary to ensure the car stays in the lane. There’s also automatic high/low beam, reversing camera, hill-start assist and Isofix child seat anchor points in the two outer rear seats. A first for any Toyota model in Australia is a windscreen-mounted camera that recognises speed-limit signs. SX and ZR add a blind spot monitor and

satellite navigation with ZR also getting a colour head-up display. INFOTAINMENT All models get a centrally-mounted 8-inch touchscreen operated either through large buttons or voice recognition. A new feature called Miracast allows smartphone screens to be duplicated onto the touchscreen. Ascent Sport and SX get six-speaker audio, ZR steps up to an eight-speaker JBL premium system. Satellite navigation with SUNA live traffic is standard on SX and ZR. At this stage neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are available but can be expected with the next upgrade. DRIVING The more we drive SUVs the more we appreciate being able to enter cars without scraping our ageing heads on the top of the door opening so we found the low stance a bit annoying. Once settled

Ford SYNC 3 is standard on 2019 Mustang EcoBoost and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The 2019 Mustang EcoBoost comes with a five-year, unlimited distance warranty. Additional benefits available to eligible customers at participating dealers include Ford’s Service Price Promise, Service Loan Car, Sat-nav Map Updates, Low Price Tyre Guarantee price match program and Auto Club Membership.

in though the seats are comfortable and supportive. The MY2018 Corolla comes from the new modular global architecture that’s gradually being used across many of the Toyota ranges. It increases body rigidity by 60 per cent, lower centre of gravity and multi-link rear suspension; this is finally a Corolla that can be really fun to drive. This is increasingly important for Toyota in its ongoing battle with Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. The dominant feature of hybrid vehicles is fuel efficiency but the benefit of battery power is that it also provides extra low-rev torque for faster take-off. Alternatively, with some light pedal pressure, you can traverse your local supermarket carpark in silence, being on the alert for unobservant pedestrians. There’s excellent vision all round and sharp acceleration for safe urban manoeuvring. On the open road new Corolla feels like a car the next size up, which it effectively is. It cruised through the hilly motorway segment of our test route without any stress and with little of the hunting that can plague CVTs thanks to the inclusion of a torque converter. Steering is nicely weighted and responsive with safe and dependable cornering. Although it’s far from being a performance car there is a sportier feel to the latest Corolla than in previous models. During our period with the test car it clocked up fuel consumption of 4.5 litres

per 100 kilometres on a mix of suburban and motorway driving, compared to the official figure of 4.1 under similar conditions. That official fuel consumption of 4.1 litres compares with 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres for automatic Corolla pure petrol hatches. SUMMING UP Corolla Hybrid offers excellent value with prices ranging from $25,870 to $31,870 or just $1500 above those of the equivalent petrol-only models. For these prices you get a great looking small car with a large range of both safety and convenience features. And one that’s now fun to drive. Toyota continues to buck the increasing warranty trend by sticking to the old standard of three years / 100,000 kilometres. With buyers steadily abandoning large family cars Corolla Hybrid is an ideal alternative – small and economical enough for city commuting but large enough for long-distance family holiday travel.

Aussie Muscle Car Record Broken

1ONE OF ONLY THREE: The rare GTHO Phase IV Falcon breaks Ford Aussie Muscle Car record at auction. A FORD Falcon GTHO Phase IV has broken the record for a Ford Australian Muscle Car, selling for $2 million at auction over the weekend. The extremely rare one of only three in the world Ford Falcon GTHO Phase IV achieved $2 million at auction on Saturday night smashing the previous record price for an Aussie Ford Muscle Car. “This was a fantastic result for the classic car market which is growing from strength to strength. Holden’s Call To Arms By EWAN KENNEDY SINCE retiring from vehicle manufacture in Australia, Holden has been battling relevance in the marketplace. However, while the genuine born-and-bred Aussie car may have become a thing of the past, that could be about to change with the arrival of the Acadia. Okay, so the Holden seven-seat sports utility vehicle may be assembled in the United States but it’s a fair dinkum product made solely for Down Under by Holden engineers and designers. Holden chairman and managing director Dave Buttner says there is still a latent passion for Holden product, with the aim of the Acadia to make a confident statement to counter any doubts about the future. “Riding in the Holden Acadia offers a premium experience, with the luxury of space, combined with versatile interior configurations, the latest technology, a full suite of safety features and local tuning for our roads,” he says. “With the addition of Acadia to our SUV family of Trailblazer, Equinox, Tourer and Trax Holden is determined to be on the shopping list for Australians looking to buy an SUV.” The highly specified Acadia comes with the latest in automotive technology and safety features in three variants – LT, LTZ and LTZ-V – in two or all-wheel drive, powered by a 3.6-litre direct injection V6 engine producing 231 kW of power and 367 Nm of torque, mated with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is paramount with stop / start engine technology on tap and the ability to run on four cylinders under light loads. Holden claims on the combined city / urban program, the 2WD gets through 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres, while the AWD uses 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Driver Mode Control allows drivers to switch between driving programs from economy to sport, via a knob on the centre console. This also gives access to ‘Tow Haul’ when using a

trailer. Prices start at $43,490, plus on road costs, for the LT 2WD, and top out at $67,490 for the LTZ-V AWD. At launch, driveaway prices run from $42,990 to $67,990 respectively. Early adopters will feel right at home in the Acadia, with active safety features across the range now offering autonomous emergency braking with bicycle, as well as pedestrian, detection and lateral impact avoidance as part of lane keep assist with lane departure warning. Traffic sign recognition includes a mode that if the driver misses a change-of-speed sign, TSR will remind them. To develop this Holden engineers covered tens of thousands of kilometres in testing, made more important by the fact that sign designs differ from state to state. There’s hitch guidance with hitch view for hooking up a trailer, while the Acadia is the first General Motors vehicle to incorporate the ‘Tow Haul’ mode, which changes gear patterns while towing anything up to 2000 kg. There’s entertainment to keep the lid on kids’ boredom levels with an 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus USB ports – 2.1 amp fast charge versions - in all three rows. Satellite navigation is included across the range. At close to five metres long, the Acadia is a genuine seven-seater with ample leg room in

The second row slides forward to allow fairly easy entry to the back seats, which will take two adults in reasonable comfort. Storage includes a console for second-row occupants and a covered underfloor bin, keeping things out of sight. There’s even a rear-seat passenger reminder to alert to any ‘cargo’ such as sleeping kids, pets or valuables on leaving the vehicle. On the outside, the Acadia out-muscles what Holden considers to be its main rivals, the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Kluger, with a bold radiator grille with a focus on the big Holden badge, flanked by headlamps and daytime running lights. The LT rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels. LTZ adds front fog lamps, chrome door handles, and a hands-free power tailgate, while LTZ-V moves up to 20-inch alloys, HID headlamps and dual panel sunroof. It’s highly unlikely the Acadia will be called upon to take on any serious off-roading but, for the record, ground clearance is 189 mm with 18-inch wheels and 203 mm with 20s. Even in LT spec the Acadia showed plenty of sophistication on a launch drive in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley. Forward collision alert with head-up display was in constant operation during the run,

surprisingly highlighting just how many speed zones there can be on the simplest stretch of road. Driver Mode Control was hardly called on: not much snow or soft sand in this part of the world at this time of year. Active safety features dialled up added confidence in speedy going on winding country roads, although the LT suspension sought out even minor bitumen bumps and pot holes. The LTZ-V with Flexride adaptive suspension dismissed minor road surface blemishes, producing a smooth ride and assured handling with excellent feedback through the steering wheel and little body roll to trouble occupants. Braking across the board dealt well with the close-to-2 tonne boulevard bruiser. In all variants, the engine performed in a responsive and quiet manner, enabling driver and passengers to engage in a normal level of conversation. Leather trim in LTZ up, and Bose premium audio in the LTZ-V only added to the prestigious ambience. A full windscreen head-up display would have been a welcome addition across the range. With the recent rise and rise of the SUV, Holden even sees the Acadia LTZ-V, with its limo-like character, as the new Caprice. Here the company has pulled out all stops to satisfy the Aussie passion for home-grown product. Now it’s up to buyers to prove it.
