REFRESHED: Subtle changes to looks are to the fore on the refreshed Kia Optima sedan.
Optima GT
keeps up the Kia pace By DEREK OGDEN The safety pack for both models gains driver attention alert and the lane departure warning is upgraded to the more advanced lane keeping assist version. Importantly, the prices have come down, with the Si at $33,390, plus on-road costs. The inclusion of smart phone compatibility in the Si negates the need for embedded satellite navigation, while HID headlamps are replaced by dual projection lights. The Optima GT still has sat nav through a new head unit with 10-year MapCare and SUNA traffic information. However, Optima’s $1200 price cut to $43,290, means the front passenger power
seat is off loaded for a manual adjusted one. The front seats are no longer ventilated, but remain heated, the panoramic sunroof is left out, as are high beam assist and tyre pressure monitoring. Optima still benefits from Australia’s leading seven-year warranty, seven-year capped price servicing, totalling $3347 and seven-year roadside assist programs. STYLING Minor changes to the radiator grille and front fascia and upper and lower rear panels, do not detract from the Kia character of the four-door sedan, maintaining the look worthy of the GT badge. New stylish wheels also help the Optima keep pace with premium sports sedans.
INFOTAINMENT Both models take the latest OEM infotainment head unit (7-inch for the Si and 8-inch for the GT) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto tie-up. However, the GT still has the advantage of sat nav through a new head unit with 10-year MapCare and SUNA traffic information. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Putting out an impressive 180kW and 350Nm, the 2.0-litre engine features a twinscroll turbocharger, high pressure fuel pump, dual continuously variable valve timing technology and laser-drilled injectors. It drives the front wheels through Kia’s own six-speed automatic transmission.

A REFRESH and a new set of ‘shoes’ are Kia’s attempt to keep its Optima midsize sedan appealing in an ever-changing Australian car market. Pricing has come in for a haircut too. The MY2019 entry-level Si and premium GT pair gain a new grille and front fascia, upper and lower rear panels and re-styled wheels. Inside, the Optima gains the new OEM infotainment head unit (7-inch for the Si and 8-inch for the GT) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto tie-up. Kia’s Australian engineering team once again has rolled up its sleeves to improve Optima’s ride and handling characteristics. Improvements have been made in ride refinement and steering feel.

STRIKING: Long, low and super sleek. There’s nothing shy about the shape of this latest LS500 from Lexus.
Lexus LS500h sports luxury
I LOVE being married to motoring journalist Ewan Kennedy for many reasons, not just the fact I get to drive lots of different cars. My passion for cars was instilled in me by my big brother Brett and his best mate Barry. Between them they’ve owned a Fiat, MG, Saab, E Type Jaguar, Maserati and probably some I have forgotten. Until they both got married and had other obligations. It hasn’t really made them boring, though - now that the short-of-cash period has passed Brett has an Audi S4 Avant and Barry a Porsche 911. I once read an article in our local newspaper about a ninety-something woman who drove her Porsche through the front doors of her apartment building and into the lift. Everyone else was shaking their heads and tut-tutting. And I was sitting there fervently praying that would be me in my nineties. Driving a Porsche that is, not head-butting a lift. I am currently driving a Fiat 500 by Gucci convertible which is just perfect for around town on the Gold Coast. It LV D JRUJHRXV FDU DQG GH² HV WKH Š)L[ ,W Again Tonyâ€? acronym joke as this is the second Fiat Cinquecento I have owned that I’ve had no problems at all with. The only thing is that Aldo the Fiat is not comfortable for long road trips, especially with passengers. Last week I had to drive two colleagues and myself to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for work reasons and then back the next day. I needed a larger vehicle and hoped Ewan would have something fancy for impressing my colleagues. And he produced a car the size of a limousine a slightly stretched one at that. I drove a beautiful Lexus LS500h. It’s a great looking car with a seriously sculpted front that’s dominated by

The rear is almost as striking, with numerous interlocking curves and a built-in spoiler. This upmarket Japanese machine is very long, very luxurious and the back seat is actually two very sumptuous armchairs, each with their own TV screens. Both colleagues wanted to sit in the back but I told them that one would be needed up front to keep me awake. Lucky I insisted on that because the one LQ WKH EDFN ZDV VRXQG DVOHHS ZLWKLQ ² YH minutes of leaving, so comfortable was his back seat. The interior is very luxurious and welcoming but for some reason they KDYH XVHG WKDW UHDOO\ ROG IDVKLRQHG Âł DW looking deep red leather on the dash. But this is just a personal dislike and for all I know it is back in at the height of
fashion. In any case eight other colours are on offer. The car was very easy to drive and the fact it was a hybrid was barely noticeable - except that the fuel consumption was amazingly low. Five hours of driving on just over a quarter of a tank. Average fuel use was just 6.8 litres per hundred kilometres. My Fiat 500 uses more than that driving around town. The radar cruise control was great and from the Gateway Bridge north I did not touch a pedal until turning off the motorway. Very nice. I did have some concerns. I’m 168cm tall and like to sit high so I can see the bonnet. But the driver’s seat would not go high enough for me. I did get used to the sitting position quite quickly but would have preferred to sit higher. The only other negative was that I felt that it needed two end-on-end carparks. ,W SUREDEO\ ZRXOG KDYH ² WWHG LQ RQH just.
In-cabin technology in the LS500h includes a 12.3-inch multi-media screen and a stunning Mark Levinson 23-speaker audio that while not quite concert hall is a real delight to sit inside, yes inside, you really are surrounded by quality sound. Sports Luxury additional features in the LS500h I drove include four-zone climate control with rear cooler, 22-way power rear seats with passenger-side ottoman and seven massage programs, and rear-seat entertainment. POWERTRAINS Two powertrains are offered, a 310 kW twin-turbo V6 in the LS 500, and the hybrid LS 500h that uses a naturallyaspirated V6 petrol and electric power for a maximum 264kW. Our test car was WKH K\EULG DV LGHQWL² HG E\ WKH UDWKHU discreet ‘h’ in its title. Blind-spot PRQLWRUV UHDU FURVV WUDI² F DOHUW SRS XS bonnet for pedestrian projection, and tyre pressure monitoring system. SUMMING UP If you need a car for ultra-smooth, very-comfortable, long-distance travelling, the big Lexus LS500h is just great, and amazingly economical into the bargain.

New McLaren 600LT unveiled
ALL-ROUNDER: The spectacular McLaren 600LT is suitable for both road and track. By ALISTAIR KENNEDY MCLAREN Automotive has given $XVWUDOLDQ PRWRULQJ HQWKXVLDVWV WKH ² UVW local viewing of its latest supercar the 600LT. Described as track-ready and roadlegal the 600LT is based on the previous 570S but with the enticing combination of more power, reduced weight and extra downforce. The ‘LT’ in the name stands for Longtail and it follows on from the three previous LT models, the legendary Le Mans winning F1 GTR, the 675LT and 675LT Spider. The big physical difference between the 600LT and the 570S and one of the biggest talking points are the exhaust pipes that sit at the top of the rear panel

Their location also frees up space at the lower rear allowing for a larger diffuser which further improves the car’s aerodynamics. Weight reduction is a key feature of the new 600LT with up to 96 kg being trimmed from the already-lightweight 570S on a range of components to allow it to hit the scales at just 1247 kg. 7KHVH LQFOXGH FDUERQ ² EUH ERG\ZRUN forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension, hollowed-out anti-roll bars, lighter wheels and brakes, thinner glass, optional seats taken from the

This combination of reduced weight and extra grunt allows the 600LT to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. Then with its McLaren Senna brake boosters it can drop from 200 km/h to standstill in 177 metres. The pre-production 600LT that was shown in Sydney will be followed from next month when full production will begin at the McLaren factory in Woking, Surrey. months. Australians who already have placed their orders, and parted with some of the $455,000 plus on-roads sale price, can expect delivery by the end of this year. The chances of getting a McLaren 600LT for our usual week-long test are negligible. However, the good news is that there are currently three Australian McLaren dealerships, one in Sydney, one in Melbourne and the third at Southport on the Gold Coast, where Marque’s northern team is based. So we’ll try and pull a few strings and get to spend at least a couple of hours for a bit of promenade posing followed by a spin along the excellent hinterland roads. Fingers crossed and watch this space for our road test report.
