POWERTRAINS Our test car had a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 140 kW of power, and 300Nm of torque from a nicely low 1400 all the way to 4000 revs. So you can have peak torque virtually all the time in normal driving around town as well as in the country. All-wheel-drive by way of an eight-speed automatic is used in the XC40 T4 Inscription, a front-wheel drive model is offered in the lower cost Momentum variant.

THE very Swedish Volvo XC40 midsize SUV has an excellent blend of style, performance and practicality. And it goes without saying it's one of the safest vehicles on our roads. A new model, the XC40 Inscription was recently added to the range. A midrange variant, it features a powered front passenger seat, leather-trim, ambient interior lighting and a powered tailgate. A fascinating insight; by far the most commented-on feature of the XC40 Inscription we have been driving is the Orrefors Crystal gear selector. A great collaboration between the two upmarket Swedish products. The XC40 is slightly larger than others in its class, at 4425mm long, 1863mm wide and 1652mm high and every centimetre of the interior space is put to good use. It has seating

Mini John Cooper Works ( JCW) Clubman By EWAN KENNEDY THE fastest ever production MINI, the John Cooper Works (JCW) Clubman is coming to Australia. Extensive changes to the John Cooper Works four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine makes it produce 225kW, an increase of 55kW over the previous model, and 450Nm of torque. The result is a zero to 100km/h time of just 5.1 seconds. The 55kW power increase is thanks to internal revisions including a reinforced crankshaft drive, new pistons with modified compression, adapted connecting rods with bush-less bracket, modified injection valves with increased flow rate and a newly developed exhaust turbocharger with integrated air-diverter valves. Power is transferred via a new torqueoptimised, shift-by-wire eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission that delivers rapid shifts while also featuring Launch Control. Both the MINI JCW Clubman and JCW Countryman are fitted with the MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive system as standard to harness the engine’s full potential and put power to the ground. A mechanical limited slip differential aids front end grip and prevents torque steer. An enhanced JCW sports braking system, with ventilated 18-inch front discs (360x30) and ventilated 17-inch rear axle brake discs (330x20), provides excellent stopping power. Ride height has also been lowered by 10mm on the JCW models to optimise handling.

The front styling package of the new MINI JCW Clubman includes new bumpers and a revised grille and splitter that showcase dynamic intent and highlight model-specific character. Revised LED headlights with full elliptical LED DTR light and LED Union Jack tail lights illuminate the rear and highlight the

new rear bumper in signature MINI style. “Spirited driving fun has been quintessential to the MINI experience since our brand’s inception in 1959, and the JCW engine update will make the new JCW Clubman a true firecracker ideal for performance-loving Australians,” said MINI Australia general manager Brett Waudby.

Ŷ STILL FRESH: The front styling of the new MINI JCW Clubman includes new bumpers and a revised grille and splitter.

Cars with faulty airbags may be de-registered By EWAN KENNEDY FAULTY Takata airbags can go off without warning and kill or seriously injure you. Despite a long campaign by car companies and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) there are still a total of 537,000 vehicles in Australia with faulty Takata airbags. The 537,000 vehicles tend to be from outer suburban areas of large cities, country areas, lower socio-economic groups and when English isn't the first language of the vehicle owners. Tony Weber, chief executive of the FCAI, said that while local automotive brands had worked hard to complete the millions of vehicles to date, they remained completely committed to the recall process, and are following priority risk factors to ensure the smooth completion of the replacement program. “Time, money and resources are not a consideration for the Australian automotive industry in the mandatory Takata recall. All that matters is the faulty airbags are rectified as soon as possible, and with minimum inconvenience for the customer. “It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s free – and you could be saving your own life, or that of a loved one,” Mr Weber said. “It’s a simple process; on the internet key in “takata airbag’ and enter your vehicle’s registration and state or territory. You can also check by texting TAKATA to 0487 AIRBAG (247 224).

2020 Volvo XC40 T4 Inscription Ŷ Gear selection is by a double-tap on the console mounted Orrefors Crystal.

Ŷ From page 1 INFOTAINMENT We really like the portrait shape of the infotainment 9-inch screen. This makes so much more sense than the skinny horizontal units that are all the rage at the moment, because you can see much further ahead on the sat nav map. Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment system (Sensus) provides smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are three USB connections as well as induction phone charging. We certainly enjoyed the clarity of the Harman Kardon Premium Sound system. SAFETY The company's approach to safety has never faltered. Here’s a list of safety features as provided to us by Volvo Australia: City Safety: Pedestrian, Vehicle, Large Animals and Cyclist Detection, Intersection Collision and Oncoming Mitigation with Brake Support; Steering Support; Intellisafe Assist: Driver Alert; Lane Keeping Aid; Adjustable Speed Limiter function; Oncoming Lane Mitigation;

Intellisafe Surround: Blind Spot Information (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), Front and Rear Collision Warning with mitigation support; Run-off road Mitigation; Hill start assist; Hill Descent Control; Park Assist Front and Rear; Rear Parking Camera; Rain Sensor; Drive mode with personal power steering settings; Emergency Brake Assist (EBA); Emergency Brake Light (EBL); Frontal Airbags, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with airbags in front seats, Inflatable Curtains and Whiplash Protection System; Driver’s knee airbag; Belt Reminder all seats; IsoFix outer position rear seat; Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) So there you are! If you get into major strife you, or someone else, has made a big mistake. Volvo's new Clean Zone two-zone climate system removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver what Volvo calls, “Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside”. Note that we have included this in the Safety segment of this review, rather than the Interior segment. The 360-degree camera system in our test car provided an overhead view of the Volvo and its surrounds - it's almost as though a small

drone with a camera is hovering over you. DRIVING Part of our drive program saw us taking a holiday trip, north from our place on the Gold Coast to the Gympie, Amamoor area. This can be done as a weekend trip but we chose to spend five days away to really relax. The front seats are large and comfortable. Even in the rear I was able to sit ‘behind myself’ (I’m 180cm tall) with room to spare. Selecting gears is simple - you move the lever with a double-tap to Drive or Reverse - just like the double-tap on your electronic devices. Turbo lag is minimal and the four-cylinder engine is smooth in operation. There's some noise under hard acceleration but it's all but inaudible when cruising. The automatic transmission was almost invariably in the correct gear and it works well with the engine. Fuel use during our testing was in the nine to 11 litres per 100 km range around town, dropping to six to seven litres on motorway and easy paced country driving. These are very good numbers for a solidly built SUV that was loaded for our country trip. Handling is excellent, with steering that al-

most seems to read your mind. Rough roads didn't faze the XC40 but some surfaces created more tyre noise than we anticipated, particularly Australia’s notorious course chip that has been recently laid. The famously noisy concrete on the M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane was tamed rather well. SUMMING UP Swedish, stylish, sensible, solid and spacious; the S words explain why the Volvo XC40 has been such a sales success in Australia and in many other countries.

for a fully imported car. There's better than average underbonnet space for a car of this size so you can do your own basic servicing. Leave anything that could affect safety to the professional mechanics. Buy a workshop manual before starting work. Insurance costs are towards the lower end of the scale and we don’t know of any companies that charge signiďŹ cantly more for the Sport versions. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Look for body damage and/or signs of it having been repaired. Wrinkles in panels and paint overspray are signals of a crash. Look over the car in strong light to best view this. Be war of a Swift that has been modiďŹ ed as it may have had a hammering by a crazy driver. Big, noisy exhausts are a reason for caution. Check that the engine starts within a couple of seconds of the key being turned, even if it’s completely cold in the morning. If the engine hesitates on acceleration or during hard cornering there may be some water in the fuel rails causing a misďŹ re. Manual gearchanges should be light, easy and quiet. If not there may be gearbox troubles, or it may be the clutch needs adjusting.

Selling your car has never been easier or cheaper!

Make sure the sound system work correctly. If there’s no life from it there’s a good chance it has been stolen and the PIN security system has shut it down. Fuel ďŹ ller hoses and clamps were the subject of recalls in March and May 2012. Give a Suzuki dealer a call with the Swift’s VIN and they can advise if it has been modiďŹ ed. CAR BUYING TIP Small city cars that have been used extensively on country roads may have more wear and tear than larger cars.
