Ŷ FULLY CHARGED: The Jaguar I-Pace charges to the front under full power.

Jaguar I-Pace By DEREK OGDEN it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice. "So we started from a clean sheet of paper to create a new benchmark - the world's best premium electric vehicle, and a true Jaguar driver's car.” I-Pace has a state-of-the-art 90 kWh lithium-ion battery and delivers a range of more than 450 kilometres and can be charged from zero to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes (100W DC), or takes just over ten hours to achieve the same state of charge using a domestic wallbox (7 kW AC). I-Pace has a five-year, 200,000 km warranty, backed by a five-year service plan and five years roadside assistance. The I-Pace battery,

made of 432 cells slung beneath the cabin floor, is covered by an eight-year, 160,000 km warranty. The I-Pace is available in S, SE and HSE variants, plus a First Edition, priced from $119 000, plus on-road costs. The test vehicle was the SE grade, selling for $130,200.

open when cooling is required, but close when not needed to redirect air through the bonnet scoop, smoothing airflow. A skinnier rear view for the driver, sacrificed to style by swoopy glass, but slightly excused by a big boot, roomy centre console and almost flat floor throughout.

STYLING Its sleek, coupe-like silhouette - with a short, low bonnet, aero roof design and curved rear screen – takes its cue from the Jaguar C-X75 supercar. The cab-forward design contrasts with its squared-off rear, which helps cut the drag co-efficient to a reasonable 0.29. To optimise the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, active vanes in the grille

INTERIOR Though it's a small-to-mid-size SUV, IPace's cab forward design and EV powertrain means interior space compares with that of a large SUV. In the rear, legroom is a generous 890 mm while. As there's no transmission tunnel, there's a large, very accessible 10.5-litre central storage compartment.

JAGUAR has leapt into the all-electric vehicle pool with the I-Pace to pounce on any early adopters of the revolutionary zero-emission vehicle - and it has immediately paid off. The I-Pace won an historic treble at the 2019 World Car Awards, walking away with the 2019 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year titles but also named World Green Car. The latest win, at the New York International Auto Show by a panel of 86 motoring journalists from 24 countries, comes just weeks after it claimed the European Car of Year title. Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, says: "We started with an ideal, to move towards our Destination Zero vision; zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. I-Pace is our first step to achieving this, and

Upmarket tow cars from BMW

2

Limited edition MG3S

Ŷ NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE: Prestige and sporting BMW X5 and X7 can now be used for heavy towing. By EWAN KENNEDY WHO says you need to own a pickup truck or a mundane SUV to tow heavy vans or traliers, when you can use a prestige car instead? Because BMW has just introduced a factory-designed and installed towing system that's available for nine models across the BMW X5 and X7 lines. BMW Australia dealers can supply and fit an approved Tongue Kit that includes a tongue, ball, appropriate bracket and ‘D’ shackles, stickers and a specific BMW bag. The Wiring Harness includes a 12 pin ‘flat’ plug and a wiring loom from the vehicle to the adapter. Australian local fitment, including the tongue kit and wiring harness, is recommended at $700 including GST.

Rated at between 2,700kg to 3,500kg braked depending on the model, the solution comes with an integrated hitch receiver, bespoke control unit and specific vehicle wiring harness. The towing hitch requires no removal of parts. The specific control unit is multifunctional and assists driver safety. BMW’s Surround View offers an additional zoom function for the rear camera, while a trailer stabilisation system is also included. “Availability of this new BMW towing hitch is a significant development in further broadening the capability of our X models,” BMW Group Australia CEO Vikram Pawah said. “Our Sports Activity Vehicles were born for active lifestyles. From towing a caravan, a boat or a jet ski, to a horse float or camper trailer, this towing solution allows owners to enjoy more of Australia.

Ŷ HOT WHEELS: Side skirts and a black rear spoiler give the MG3S a sporty look. By EWAN KENNEDY MG Motor has introduced 100 Limited Edition MG3S, to Australia. Prices start at a very reasonable $16,990 drive away. It has MG3S exclusive includes side skirts, a black rear sports spoiler, black painted wheels, weather shields and custom keyrings and is highlighted by ‘limited edition’ badging. MG3S comes with two colour schemes: white, red and black, and yellow and black. The former has red piped floor mats, red interior vents and a red radiator grille. The yellow and black variant has black floor mats and a black grille Both models are powered by the MG3 Auto’s 1.5-litre engine, 82kW of power and 150Nm of torque.

Attractive selling features are the company's seven-year unlimited distance warranty and seven-year roadside assistance. MG is expanding rapidly in Australia so check its website for an updated list of dealers: https://mgmotor.com.au/.

Jaguar I-Pace Ŷ From page 1 In the rear, tablet and laptop stowage is found beneath the seats, while the rear luggage compartment offers a 656-litre capacity – 1453 litres with seatbacks folded flat. INFOTAINMENT I-Pace raises the curtain for Jaguar on the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. Utilising an innovative combination of touchscreens, sensors and tactile controls, Touch Pro Duo is extremely intuitive. Even the new EV navigation gets personal, with the system working out the topography of the designated route and info from previous journeys, including driving style, to calculate range and charging status for maximum driver confidence. The advanced system uses 'Smart Settings' technology – driven by artificial intelligence algorithms – to identify driver preferences, tailoring the I-Pace driving and interior settings to suit. I-Pace also introduces an Amazon Alexa Skill, so owners can ask an Alexa enabled device for information held in the Jaguar InControl remote app. For example: “What is the charge status and is it enough to get me to work?” ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The I-Pace’s two synchronous permanent magnet motors with rare-earth metals are fed by a state-of-the-art 90 kWh lithium-ion battery, giving a range of more than 450 km. Smart technology is on board with a battery pre-conditioning system that when plugged in automatically raises or lowers the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away. SAFETY The I-Pace earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, partly due to a body that provides high levels of occupant protection, and is complemented by technologies designed

to protect other road users and pedestrians, including a deployable bonnet and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection Thoughtful ‘lab coats’ at Jaguar realised that with little or no engine sound, the I-Pace could be a danger to blind, visually impaired and other vulnerable road users, so they designed an Audible Vehicle Alert System that can be heard at speeds up to 20 km/h and exceeds the 56 dB(A) minimum required by European legislation – the strictest in the world – for all new EVs from July 2019. DRIVING There’s nothing new about battery powered electric vehicles, the first one I came across was the Co-op milk float in 1950’s Britain. The I-Pace motor note rekindles trips to town on the trolley bus of that era, whistling as it went. The Jag has three: Eco, Comfort and Dynamic. While Eco is wasted on a car of its capabilities, Comfort affords some level of free rein to the I-Pace performance. Hit the button for Dynamic and the hefty (two tonnes-plus) five-seater puts on a show of incendiary acceleration, hitting 100 km/h from standstill, according to the maker, in 4.8 seconds on the way to a 200km/h top speed. Part of the charm of the I-Pace is the ability to drive it with just one pedal. Instant response to power has the car moving off quickly and smoothly, while lifting the foot, engages engine braking just as fast. Careful use of the pedal can be effective, with practice, even in stop/start going. All this comes with a driving range of up to 470 km. With zero petrol or diesel consumption, but the possibility of an unknown slug in the household battery charging power bill, the jury is still out on The I-Pace’s savings. And there’s the rub. Refuelling the beast is so variable. Charging the battery from a domestic power outlet works out at 10 km range per hour, which would take nearly two days to

fill up from ‘empty’. However, filling from fully empty is unusual and the more common 20 to 80 percent is likely to be significantly better and work nicely for most. Hook up to an optional 7 kW AC singlephase wall-charger, Jaguar says I-Pace can be charged to 80 per cent in 10 hours at the rate of 35 km per hour. Best of all is with a 100 kW DC fast charger in just 40 minutes (at the rate of 100 km per 15 minutes). These two come at a price, as do a swag of options to add the personal touch. SUMMING UP The Jaguar I-Pace SE is a pleasant enough drive, especially off the mark; snail-like to refuel, so hell to live with; and a potential mystery when it comes to trading it in. Even if (when) prices come down, I won’t

be queueing any time soon for a plug-in allelectric vehicle until it’s possible to “fill ‘er up” at a conventional fuel stop in a matter of minutes.

Used: Toyota Yaris 2011 - 2018 TOYOTA Yaris is a smaller brother to the big selling Corolla and is aimed at those primarily driving in the city and suburbs. It can be used on country trips, though you're probably best to keep clear of unsealed roads. Even rough sealed surfaces can challenge the suspension and the ride can be pretty bumpy on occasions. It's one of the top sellers in its class so there are plenty on sale at any one time. Use this to your advantage by picking and choosing between those on offer. Yaris was introduced to Australia in 2005, in this review we are looking at the second generation that went on sale in October 2011. It's signiďŹ cantly larger and more reďŹ ned than the ’05 model and is our recommendation if you can come up with the extra folding stuff. The great majority of these small Toyotas are ďŹ ve-door hatchbacks. A three-door hatch was offered initially but was pulled off the new-car market due to lack of interest with the facelift of the Yaris in August 2014. A four-door sedan was discontinued with the introduction of the gen-two, but Toyota kept the ďŹ rst generation sedan on sale alongside the gen-two for a while. These weren’t exactly popular, indeed they’re pretty rare beasts - but we don’t anticipate them ever becoming rare collectors’ cars‌ Yaris’ boot is on the small side as this is the area that suffers in the people/luggage compromise in most small cars. Check for yourself early in your pre-purchase stage as individual needs vary greatly. Handling of the little Toyota is safe but not exactly inspiring. Some suspension work was done in Australia by local and Japanese engineers to suit local tastes. But sensibly there's a leaning towards comfort ahead of sportiness. Which is a good thing as it's unlikely many will have been thrashed by keen drivers. Having said that, there's a semi sporty model, Yaris ZR, that might be worth chasing if you're looking for something more to your taste. Safety is advanced, with even the oldest models being examined here having electronic aids to help keep drivers out of trouble. This further improved in stages, with the facelifted 2014 and 2017 models being up with those in much more expensive cars.

By EWAN KENNEDY Power comes from four-cylinder engines of 1.3- or 1.5-litre capacity. Five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics are offered. The smaller engine may seriously be lacking in performance if you're carrying a big load in twisting mountainous roads, especially if it's an automatic. March 2017 saw Yaris getting another facelift and tail tuck that squared off its shape to bring it into line with its larger brothers. A good home mechanic will be able to do a lot of the work that doesn't affect the safety of the car. Underbonnet room is understandably tight so expect some frustration and bloodletting. There are Toyota dealers all over Australia, even in very remote regions. Outback dealers may not have parts in stock for the Yaris, meaning you may have to wait for them to be freighted up from the city, something that usually only takes a couple business days. Spare parts are pretty reasonably priced and we have never heard any real complaints about availability. Insurance costs are generally good and there doesn't seem to be a great variation from company to company. Nevertheless it's still smart to shop around, always make sure you’re doing an accurate comparison. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Sun fading on the interior trim is likely to mean a car has spent most of its life parked outdoors. Look over the interior of a car and boot for damage caused by careless kids. Check for damage to the body or signs that it has been repaired. Looking sideway along the panels will show up ripples if the work hasn’t been done correctly. Look at the lower mounting of the rear safety belts, some may have caused damage to the webbing of the belts. Toyota seems to have brake uid leaks on disc brakes from time to time, the Yaris is no exception. Have it repaired immediately as uid on the discs drastically reduces effectiveness.
