Cross AWD Exceed comes standard with the same luxury appointments and comprehensive safety package as the 2WD Exceed with the addition of Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control four-wheel drive system, all for $38,500. This was on our test menu. STYLING The exterior has the company’s Dynamic Shield exterior design theme, with foglamps and indicators being set lower within bumper recesses, and LED headlamps and daytime running lights incorporated in the main lighting assembly. A bar and mesh upper grille, reinforced by roof lip spoiler and ‘venturi’ style
lower bumper profile, add to the sporty look of the SUV. Eclipse features double rear windows divided by high-mounted LED brake lights, giving a deeper, more expansive rear view than is normally found in SUVs of a coupe nature. INTERIOR Prestige is the byword here with quality cabin trim creating a stylish and crafted feel. Carbon and piano black accents adorn the instrument panel, steering wheel, centre console and door panels. A high finish silver trim surrounds the lower dash, centre console, front door armrests and air vents.

WITH the Eclipse Cross, a new spin has been given to the Mitsubishi sports utility vehicle orbit. Launched earlier this year, the all-new Eclipse Cross is the first of a new generation of Mitsubishi SUVs and joins the brand’s current lineup of the ASX, Outlander, Outlander PHEV hybrid, Pajero Sport and Pajero. Initially, three variants were offered in Eclipse Cross LS and Exceed specification levels. Recently, an entrylevel ES was added to the range, taking the line-up to four models. Weighing in at a competitive price of $29,990, plus on-road costs, the ES features 18-inch alloy wheels, sixspeaker Smartphone Link Display Audio,

Mitsubishi Triton: first details
WIDE APPEAL: Tough frontal look for the upcoming new Mitsubishi Triton will appeal to private buyers as well as the tradies.
MITSUBISHI has announced information on its upcoming, virtually all-new Triton that will arrive in Australia in January 2019. Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the local launch date. Mitsubishi is of course a Japanese company, but Triton is built in Thailand and the factory proudly tells us the new Triton has been developed to be, “Engineered Beyond Tough”. A handy catchphrase in these times when small pickup trucks are the vehicle of choice amongst private buyers, and of course tradies. Triton has a front face that incorporates the new-generation Mitsubishi Dynamic
By EWAN KENNEDY Shield design concept. This has strong angular lines that certainly suit this market segment’s buyers. It also has a higher bonnet and beefier-looking bumpers and lights. The sides incorporate extended wheelarch flares. Inside, Triton has been given a slightly higher quality look to appeal in particular to private buyers. There are soft pad materials, stitching on the console, armrests and parking brake. Mitsubishi Triton continues to have ladder-type frame and high impact-safety
Eclipse sheds light From page 1 A 2670 mm wheelbase makes for a roomy ambience, added to by the twin bubble roof design ensuring generous headroom, even with the panoramic glass roof of the Exceed model. Wide opening (75 degrees) rear doors are handy. Storage including a large double-compartment glovebox, centre console with sunglass tray and underfloor cargo box. A new ‘Sync’ function for the air-conditioning left and right temperature is a neat touch. INFOTAINMENT Mitsubishi’s Smartphone link Display Audio enables phone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while selected apps, including navigation, stored on their smartphone, can be accessed through the colour touchscreen or via voice control. The SDA, which is standard fitment to all Eclipse Cross models, also allows users to make calls or send SMS messages hands free and combined with a new touchpad controller on the centre console, allows for a more intuitive operation of Apple CarPlay. Android Auto users miss out here. Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB+) is
cabin structure while featuring classleading advanced active safety and driver assistance systems. Details of the engine have yet to be provided, which suggests it’s the same grunty 2.4-litre turbo-diesel that has been around for a while. We anticipate it will have been upgraded in power and torque and may have lower emissions and consumption. What we have been told is that the automatic transmission is now a six-speed unit in place of the current five-speed. New Triton 4WD models are fitted with either Mitsubishi’s respected Super-Select
4WD, or Easy-Select 4WD. Both 4WD systems use a new Off-road Mode which has Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand And Rock (in 4LLc only) settings. When engaged, Off-road Mode integrally controls engine power, transmission and braking to regulate the amount of wheel slip and maximise all-terrain performance and self-extraction performance in mud or snow. Braking has been improved with the fitment of larger front discs and calliper pistons. Similarly there are comfort enhancing changes by way of larger rear dampers which contain more damping oil.

standard on all variants, along with the traditional AM / FM tuner. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS All versions of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are powered by a direct injection turbocharged petrol engine developing 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. It’s matched to an advanced new automatic transmission with Sport mode, manual override and paddle shifters. The Eclipse Cross is available in two or four-wheel drive, the latter incorporating the latest generation of Mitsubishi’s Super All-wheel Control that offers a choice of three advanced drive modes – Auto, Snow and Gravel. SAFETY Comprehensive passive safety features are based on Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact safety body and seven airbags, including for driver and front passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee positions. Pedestrian protection measures are energy absorbing structures under the bonnet panel, cowl top and front bumper. Active safety includes forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, automatic high beam and hill start assist. Exceed models add blindspot warning,
lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, multi-around monitor, and adaptive cruise control. Also included is ultrasonic missacceleration mitigation that reduces the chance and severity of hitting obstacles when the driver mistakenly presses the accelerator when stationary or at speeds of up to 10 km/h. Using ultrasonic sensors to detect obstructions in front of or behind the vehicle it regulates engine power while emitting an audible warning. DRIVING If silence is golden, the Eclipse Cross takes on a particularly auric character, with engine and road noise kept at bay from occupants in an efficiently-insulated cabin. The new transmission follows suit, benefiting from the latest step logic technology to combine smoothness and responsiveness with fuel economy, the last ranging between seven and eight litres per hundred kilometres on a range of city and highway driving over the test period. Snow and gravel were in short supply over this time, so the Super-All Wheel Drive system was strictly limited to Auto mode.
In spite of the onset of summery conditions, I had the opportunity to experience the seat heating, having caught the switch while dropping a set of keys into the adjacent cubby at the foot of the centre stack. On switching off, the heat took some time to dissipate. I hesitate to say ‘no sweat’. Despite the heated moment, the leather upholstered seats were comfortably cool and at the rear a 60:40 split, with slide-and-recline adjustments gave occupants 200 mm of legroom, while also allowing occupants to get comfortable with eight 16 to 32-degree reclining steps. The Smartphone Display Audio touch pad controller, situated on the centre console, took some getting used to, with the left hand not always up to the delicate touch and movement required. However, I’m sure it could be conquered with practice. SUMMARY The Eclipse Cross is a worthy addition to the Mitsubishi line-up of SUVs. With a price range of less than $10K over the four models, the well-specced upperclass variants, including the Exceed AWD, offer quite an attraction.

Ford’s fascinating Focus: By EWAN KENNEDY FORD Focus Active is a standard Focus that has extra ground clearance and some body add-ons to give it a semi-SUV look. It has as much as 34 mm additional ground clearance to give it an elevated driving position, something that can be handy in traffic. Focus Active is not a toy, though, because front and rear skid plates can let you tackle moderately serious dirt roads. Inserts in contrasting silver alter the Focus Active’s styling when compared with others in the Focus range. There are unique front and rear bumpers as well as a honeycomb grille and LED Daytime Running Lights, as well as LED adaptive cornering foglamps. A black beltline and wheel-arch treatments add give it a more rugged look. Twin chrome tail-pipes look the part. The seats have a more rugged cloth trim to complement more textured cabin materials and surfaces. Nordic Blue seat stitching is also used on the steering wheel, dashboard and doors. Infotainment is by Ford’s SYNC system through an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen that can be operated using pinch and swipe gestures. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, A wireless charging pad beneath the instrument panel automatically detects compatible devices to initiate charging. The SYNC 3 system brings Emergency Assistance as standard. When paired to a compatible smartphone and within range, it can automatically dial emergency

services in the event of a serious crash. The Focus Active is powered by a1.5-litre EcoBoost engine (134 kW/240 Nm) that drives through an eight-speed paddleshift automatic. Active has two additional drive modes - Slippery and Trail over the standard modes of others in the Focus range. Slippery Mode is designed for surfaces with reduced grip such as snow and ice. Trail Mode is intended to help maintain momentum on soft, deformable surfaces like a sandy beach or powdery dirt road. Note that all-wheel-drive is not part of the Focus Active package. Dozy drivers can be saved from crashes by autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keeping aid and lane departure warning. Focus Active’s programmable MyKey POP UP: High riding Ford Focus is an interesting alternative to a allows owners to program a key for younger drivers. This can inhibit midsize SUV. incoming phone calls; restrict top speed; prevent deactivation of driver assistance and safety features; reduce audio system maximum volume, and disable the audio system altogether if occupants are not using seatbelts. The Ford Focus Active goes on sale in Australia at a date yet to be specified in 2019 with an MLP of $29,990. On-road charges have to added. COMMENT Ford Focus Active is an interesting, very sensible vehicle, but will it appeal to buyers who want to be seen in a tough looking SUV rather than a passenger car? We would like to think it would, but…

HI-TECH: Lexus RX 450h F Sport SUVs will be fitted with advanced road safety equipment. LEXUS Australia has become the first vehicle marque to partner with the Queensland government in a trial of advanced technologies designed to improve road safety and reduce congestion, emissions and fuel consumption. Two Lexus RX 450h F Sport SUVs will be fitted with sensitive equipment that will enable them to communicate with each other and with roadside infrastructure such as traffic lights, as part of a twoyear trial. The study into cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) technologies will involve the two Lexus vehicles providing drivers with early warnings, including visual and audible alerts, covering a wide range of road and traffic conditions. Warnings will include alerting drivers to road hazards or the existence of a crash ahead, as well as information that vulnerable road users such as
By EWAN KENNEDY pedestrians and / or cyclists are at a connected intersection. Information will be shared between vehicles and infrastructure using dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) technology which transmits safety information using radio waves. Lexus Australia chief executive Scott Thompson said the cutting-edge C-ITS project would generate valuable data that would eventually benefit all Australians. “Our local engineering team, working closely with the Queensland government, will assess the effectiveness of intelligent transport systems while expanding our understanding of driver acceptance of these technologies,” Mr Thompson said. Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said, “Having Lexus Australia select Queensland as a location for their first connected vehicle
testing sends a strong message to the vehicle industry that Queensland values the potential safety benefits of these technologies, and is ready for their introduction” “Lexus Australia will be utilising the Ipswich Connected Vehicle Pilot test bed and the Mount Cotton Driver Training Centre for the tests which will occur over 2019 and 2020,” Mr Bailey said. Advanced safety features already standard on the RX 450 F Sport include a forward collision-warning system with audible and visual alerts, autonomous emergency braking and automated lanekeeping.
