2019 Ford Focus review

Ŷ WORTH A LOOK: Sporty looks are a feature of the Ford Focus ST-Line

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY At this time there’s only one driveline, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with eight-speed automatic transmission. Our test car was the semi-sporty ST-Line hatch with its sportier suspension and a range of cosmetic enhancements including a flat-bottomed steering wheel. STYLING The Focus ST-Line replaces the previous Focus Sport and has a honeycomb grille, sporty side skirts and rear bumper capped with a chrome-finished twin tail-pipe. The hatch has an integrated boot-lid spoiler. The ST-Line has sports suspension, a flatbottom sports steering wheel with red-stitching, metallic pedals and wireless smartphone

charging as standard. Its dual-zone climate control can be operated via voice activation. Add the optional Design Pack and you get LED headlights and 18-inch wheels. Ford Focus Titanium has leather upholstery and an LED Lighting Package that provides a broader headlight spread as well as automatic high-low beam. Camera-based dynamic bending enables the swivel of the light beam into the curve before the vehicle reaches it. Rear seat space is impressive with plenty of leg and headroom although that’s offset by a relatively small 273 litres of boot space with all seats in place, extendable to 1320 litres with the rear seatbacks folded. SAFETY Standard safety features across the Focus

range include front, side and curtain airbags; Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Night-time Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection; Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Aid as standard across the range. Focus Titanium also has Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Post-Impact Braking (PIB), automatically apply the brakes after a collision to reduce the risk of rolling onto another vehicle. Titanium also features Stop&Go Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Evasive Steer Assist and Lane-Centring as standard. The ACC system helps the Focus maintain a comfortable driving distance from vehicles ahead, and with the addition of Stop&Go, has the ability to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. FORD Australia is looking at its latest, fourth-generation, Focus to boost the company’s flagging passenger car sales and ease pressure on the Ranger ute which currently accounts for around two-thirds of all Ford sales. Launched here in December last year all new Focus models are built in Germany, previously lower-spec models came from Thailand. According to Ford it has been developed from the ground up. Four model grades are offered: Trend, Active, ST-Line and Titanium. Body types are five-door hatch and station wagon, the latter only available with the S-Line specs. The high-performance ST and RS versions will follow next year. Ford has bitten the bullet and discontinued the sedan version.

Mazda3 sedan launched THE new Mazda3 sedan has arrived in Australia to join the hatch introduced in March. The sedan can be fitted with either 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre petrol engines. An interesting feature of the 2.5 is its ability to run on only two cylinders in light driving conditions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Unusually all models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions – many other marques only give you a manual in the el-cheapo variant. There are seven body colour options including Mazda's very popular Soul Red Crystal Metallic. Others are Machine Grey Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Sonic Silver Metallic, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica and Titanium Flash Mica. Safety features include Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-keep Assist System (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW),

By EWAN KENNEDY Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). Additionally, Vision Technologies are standard on the top-grade G25 Astina and optional on all others. These include Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS). We have yet to drive the new Mazda3 sedan but will do so soon. We were certainly impressed by the hatches we have driven and anticipate the sedan body will make it even smoother and quieter. (That's because sedans have a metal support below the rear window adding to rigidity.) Next-Gen Mazda3 sedan and hatchback are on sale now and come with Mazda’s fiveyear warranty and five-year Mazda Premium Roadside Assistance.

Ŷ AN AUTOMATIC CHOICE: Sleek rear of new Mazda3 sedan gives the look of an extended hatch.

2019 Ford Focus review

Ŷ From page 1 There are optional Driver Assistance Packages on Trend, Active and ST-Line that add features including Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control. Check with your dealer for specific details. For anxious parents Focus comes with the Ford MyKey system which allows the car to be programmed for younger drivers. This can inhibit incoming phone calls; restrict top speed; prevent deactivation of driver assistance and safety features; reduce audio system maximum volume, and disable the audio system altogether if occupants are not using seatbelts. ENGINE / TRANSMISSION In line with the growing trend Focus is powered by a new-design three-cylinder 1.5-litre EcoBoost (turbocharged petrol) engine developing 134 kW of power, and 240 Nm of torque from as low as 1600 rpm. In motorway driving when torque demand is low one cylinder can be de-activated for greater fuel economy. There’s no manual option, all models get an all-new eight-speed torque-converter

automatic with a circular gear shifter in the centre console and steering wheel mounted paddles. All models have alloy wheels: 16-inch on the Trend, 17s on the Active and ST-Line and 18-inch on Titanium. ST-Line and Active can be optioned up to 18-inch. INFOTAINMENT Ford's SYNC3 infotainment system is standard across the Focus range. It uses a full-colour 8.0-inch touchscreen situated on top of the dashboard and comes with integrated satellite navigation with Traffic Message Channel and MapCare updates; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, WiFi Hot Sport. There’s also the safety and convenience of voice activation that’s been specifically developed to understand a variety of accents. All models above the entry level Trend have wireless smartphone charging while the flagship Titanium gets a 675-watt 10-speaker B&O Play Premium Audio System including sub-woofer. DRIVING Focus has long been one of the most

driveable cars in its class and the latest model certainly maintains that quality. Our test car was the semi-sporty ST-Line hatch with its sportier suspension and a range of cosmetic enhancements including a flat-bottomed steering wheel. It’s a sharp and responsive performer with high torque that kicks in from just above idle and that distinctive burbling sound that you get from the better three-cylinder turbo engines. Focus has an all-new body structure and that gives a chassis that feels stiffer and lighter for greater responsiveness. The eight-speed torque convertor transmission is well-tuned and comes with three different driving modes, normal, Eco and Sport that change the shift points and throttle mapping to adjust to different conditions. Steering is sharp and direct. Factory tested fuel consumption is listed at 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged in the middle sevens in our usual blend of urban and motorway driving. Focus comes with Ford’s new fiveyear unlimited kilometre warranty. Eligible customers can also access Ford's Service Price Promise, loan car and tyre-price guar-

antee programs at participating dealership locations. SUMMING UP Focus competes in probably the most competitive segment up against the three heavy hitters, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. Although it lags well behind them in the sales charts, the Ford's sporty design and driving dynamics make it worth a comparative test drive.

Toyota Supra pricing and sales process

Ŷ GET IN QUICK: Toyota Supra's swooping curves make a strong statement. By EWAN KENNEDY TOYOTA will launch its highly anticipated GR Supra sports car in Australia in early September. Powered by a 250kW twin-scroll turbo 3.0-litre straight six, the GR Supra will be offered in two grades - GT with a recommended retail of $84,900 and GTS priced from $94,900. Toyota vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said Toyota was delighted it could offer the Supra, with its very high level of performance specification, at a sub$100,000 RRP price point. "With such sharp pricing and only approximately 300 cars available in the first 12 months, we have also developed a new online sales process to ensure a fair allocation of vehicles and provide customers with an exclusive experience. "The Supra is one of the most exciting cars we've had in our lineup for more than 20 years, and the anticipation and excitement from fans has been unprecedented with thousands of registrations of interest. "The new centralised online sales process handled by a dedicated Supra concierge will ensure we keep customers updated at every step of the way and provide a bespoke and very personal experience, which is fitting for a vehicle of the Supra's calibre," he said. All orders for the new GR Supra will go through this centralised order process with sales management and deliveries handled by Toyota's extensive dealer network. Customers will be able to log on to a dedicated website on June 19 at 12:00 noon AEST, to participate in the first round of vehicle reservations. This window will remain open until approximately 100 reservations are confirmed. For all information on how to reserve a car, the sales process and other details, customers can visit toyota.com.au/all-new-supra/. The online reservation website will use a randomised balloting process to allocate the first 100 reservations and these lucky few will then go on to complete the full registration process. Successful customers can expect to receive confirmation of their reservation within 24 hours before receiving a phone call from Toyota's dedicated Supra concierge. They will then be guided by the concierge throughout the purchase process. Those who miss out in the first round, will receive information about timing for future

reservation windows when they are determined. Multiple rounds are planned within the first year, timed to align with further availability of cars. Customers will also be able to opt out at any stage prior to delivery. As Toyota's new performance car hero, the Supra arrives with a long list of standard comfort, convenience and safety features and a vast array of performance hardware to deliver an outstanding driving experience. Both GT and GTS models are powered by a 3.0-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged, straightsix petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 250kW and peak torque of 500Nm. Drive to the rear wheels is through a quick-shifting, eight-speed automatic and an active limited slip differential and adaptive suspension. With a launch control function engaged it has zero to 100km/h time of 4.4 seconds. Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features includes active cruise control, precollision safety system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beam and traffic sign recognition. Additional safety features include seven airbags, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, rear view camera, front clearance and rear parking sensors, and tyre pressure monitor. Toyota GR Supra has dual zone climate control; keyless entry and start; heated, eight-way electrically adjustable leather-accented sports seats with power lumbar support; electrochromatic rear view mirror; and a wireless phone charger. It sits on 18-inch alloy wheels. Supra GTS adds high performance sports brakes, head-up display, premium JBL audio system with 12 speakers and larger 19-inch alloy wheels. The GR Supra GTS is also available with two exclusive options - Alcantara interior trim and upholstery and a matte grey paint - each priced at $2500. The new Supra will be available in a choice of seven standard colours plus the matte grey for the GTS. Given the car's racing potential, Toyota Australia employees were invited to participate in the naming of the colours based on iconic racetracks around the world. The final selection was Bathurst Black, Fuji White, Suzuka Silver, Goodwood Grey, Monza Red, Silverstone Yellow, and Le Mans Blue.
