ICY PLUNGE 3 Resort chief executive officer helps brings in the season.
THE region’s Olympic athletes, including Mt Beauty skiers Phil Bellingham and Esther Bottomley, have inspired a new breed of hopefuls with their efforts in Russia. Local resorts and ski lift operators reported an increase in sales during the two weeks of February’s Sochi Olympics and are predicting big things for the new season. RESORT and ski lift operators are looking forward to a big season across the region, no matter what Mother Nature provides. Falls Creek Ski Lifts brand manager Anthony O’Shea is “quietly confident” of a strong season, with big events planned for the coming months. “Last year was challenging for all resorts, but we worked hard and made it a success,” he said. “Looking back, we had a lot of good snow days and from mid-July a pattern where we had fresh snow every week. “It looks like a slow start this year but history shows there’s no correlation be-
tween the weather in May to what we get later in the season.” Mr O’Shea said operators would continue to invest in snow-making equipment to ensure resorts provided good quality conditions for snow-goers. “We’re automating our snow-making and can produce several Olympic pools worth of snow every half hour,” he said. “We can make even more snow more quickly, of the same consistency as falling snow. “There’ll be better conditions, better maintenance, and we’ll be carrying on the good work we did last year.” Mt Hotham Skiing Company resort brand manager Connie Lurger shares
the confidence for the coming season. “We need a bit more help from Mother Nature but we’re feeling good about the season ahead,” she said. “I’d rather have the warm weather out of the way now than in the middle of the season. “We have some exciting stuff in the pipeline and great offers to encourage more visitors.” Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce president Graham Parker said the region’s businesses always took a positive approach to each snow season. “We always think positively – it will be the best ever, my best ever for sure,” he said. “We have a great group of proactive,
positive operators who make the most of what each season throws at them. “We’re at fever pitch at the moment and can’t wait to get the season underway.” Mr Parker, who has skied Falls Creek every season since 1968, said a slow start to the season wasn’t the end of the world for resort operators. “I was once asked by a newspaper reporter about the prospect of not having snow for the official opening,” he said. “I jokingly told him, “When you’re meeting new friends and it’s a party weekend, the last thing you need is snow. You can’t do it all.” “Of course, that’s the line he went with.”

LET IT SNOW: The first snow of the year always kick-starts excitement for the season ahead and Mt Beauty photographer Chris Hocking was on hand to capture those magic moments at Falls Creek. YOU don’t get much more extreme than this. Flown in by helicopter to the peak of a remote mountain, with kilometres of vertical, untracked descent, competing against some of the world’s best. It’s the kind of challenge Falls Creek skier Tom Costa has dreamed of, and will make a reality at the end of this month. The former World Cup mogulist will carry the hopes of his nation, again, in the World Heli Challenge in New Zealand.
Some 60 of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will battle it out - all trying to pick the best line amid unforgiving back country terrain deep in the South Island’s wilderness. “I have wanted to give this type of event a crack for years and this year with the help of my sponsors, Central Snowsports and Deep Powder Tours, I am making it happen, Costa said. Born and raised at the base of Falls Creek, in Mt Beauty, Costa and his three brothers learnt to ski young - and fast. Adrian and Paul Costa represented Australia at the Winter Olympic Games
and Tom also competed for his country in freestyle on the World Cup circuit, and at two world championships. “I guess this freeskiing is just a natural progression, the 32 year old said. “I’ve had the opportunity to ski around the world and be exposed to some pretty extreme terrain..and I just love the challenge. But this is his first event. “It’s hard to say how I will fare, but I am definitely very excited about representing my home resort of Falls Creek, and you can bet I will be giving it my very best shot, he said.
“Obviously this sort of event is not easy to train for, especially in Australia, but the plan is to do as much backcountry skiing as possible and try to get comfortable in the big mountain arena. “Weather permitting, I hope to spend some time on Mt McKay with local skiing legend Steve Lee on his new backcountry tours. Peaks with 50 degree pitches, 80 to 100 foot drops, open bowls, deep snow and rocky chutes will test every ounce of Costa’s skill and endurance. Crashes and injuries are inherent risk. CONTINUED PAGE 12

Dinner Plain sticks to its guns
DINNER Plain was lucky enough to secure two brandnew snow guns just in time for the 2014 snow season, which will help guarantee more reliable snow than ever before. The addition of the snow guns was made possible through a joint commitment from the Alpine Shire Council, Mt Hotham Skiing Company and the State Government “Putting Locals First program”. This season, Dinner Plain is offering Australia’s most affordable lift tickets, with family lift tickets for two adults and two children for just $99 per day any day of the week. Dinner Plain’s Cobungra Platter Slope is ideal for families looking for a quieter place to get their young children started on skis or a snow board. The gentle incline ensures novice skiers and snowboarders can master their technique before hitting the more challenging runs at Hotham Alpine Resort. Mt Hotham Skiing Company general manager Belinda Trembath said she was thrilled to be able to offer the family lift ticket this season. “We are very excited to be
able to offer such a fantastic winter experience at such an affordable price,” she said. “Winter is a beautiful time of year and we would really like to encourage all Australians to take advantage of the colder months. “With Dinner Plain and Hotham only a short distance apart, families really do re-
ceive the best of both worlds during their winter escape – the gentle beginner slope at Dinner Plain as well as more challenging, advanced runs of Hotham,” she said. In addition to terrain for snowsports enthusiasts, Dinner Plain also offers many more activities to keep the whole family entertained.
For those fonder of playing in the snow, hire equipment is available for snowplay activities including tobogganing. For the explorer in the family, there are some fantastic cross-country skiing and snowshoeing groomed tracks. And for those who would like to take more of a back
seat on their adventure, Dinner Plain is also home to the much-loved Australian Sled Dog Tours. The tours provide guests with the rare opportunity of being taken on an exciting journey around the snow-covered village of Dinner Plain by a team of beautiful Siberian Huskies.
Falls Creek logo unveiled FALLS Creek unveiled its new logo earlier this year and it’s slowly being rolled out across the mountain. According to Falls Creek Resort Management CEO David Herman, the logo reflects the spirit of teamwork and collaboration on the mountain. “The introduction of the new logo is a significant step forward for Falls Creek and a symbol of the longstanding and ever-increasing cooperation between the many stakeholders and operators in the resort,” he said. “We believe it’s time for Falls Creek to promote a unified vision with a logo that appropriately reflects the combined efforts of stakeholders across the resort, who work closely together to deliver a great product for all of our guests.” The logo has been designed to capture Falls Creek’s place in the high Victorian Alps. “The new logo unifies our mountain like never before and provides a clear message to visitors that Falls Creek operators are working together to provide the most memorable alpine tourism experience.,” Mr Herman said. The new logo will be phased in over several years.

A rollercoaster start to season
Mt Beauty cross country skier and Olympic athlete Esther Bottomley (pictured) writes about her European ski season. THE season started off with a bang – two Austrian Federation International de Ski (FIS) races with my best European distance FIS points (5km skate) and a solid sprint result followed by a World Cup with my best world cup FIS points. I thought the full-time training of the past couple of years was paying off and this should be a great season, and then… that was it – sick, down and out for the next. Then came the tough decision, still with blocked sinuses and ears, I was feeling a lot better than the past month and there were two world cups coming up – to race or not to race, that was the question. The eight-hour drive was a bit of a turn off, as was the fact that I hadn’t put together a total combined time of four hours of training in more than four weeks. I made the hard choice to stay ‘home’ in Davos, Switzerland. The following weekend came the same question, with the same issues of long travel time – nine hours to Poland, health still not 100 per cent and minimal training, and the same answer after a lot of deliberating came. I sat back and watched the World Cups on TV thinking I
should be there. Watching was hard. You spend years training so that you can race and when you’re sick it’s very difficult to sit back and watch the events you have scheduled to compete in. The day of the second world cup I started a two-week intensity block. This ‘cold’ was improving but not going away
after five weeks’ rest, so it was time to try something different. Six interval sessions in 12 days, very little volume between sessions, to see if I can get my strength back. I was surprised that I still had quite a bit of strength so a few gym sessions later and I was feeling pretty good. The first interval session
felt okay, although I’m pretty sure had I gone to the World Cups that ‘pretty good’ feeling would have given me a fair hiding from the other competitors. Over the two weeks I built back up some fitness and speed and finished the week off with a half marathon. A World Cup in Toblach, Italy, with a fabulous Aussie cheer squad came the follow-
ing weekend and led into the flight to Sochi - it was Olympic Winter Games time. The Olympics were fabulous. There were three villages, cross country and biathlon were the only two sports in our hotel, which will become a five-star resort. Needless to say, huge rooms, massive bathrooms, chandeliers, indoor/outdoor pool, spa, saunas and 24-hour buffet, we certainly had a win here. Gorgeous sunny warm weather made it perfect for spectators. Gorgeous sunny warm weather also made for some interesting skiing conditions or more to the point made you question the 2pm start times – European TV was the answer - for our events. Everyone kept saying, “This is great, you guys should be used to skiing in these conditions”. Well we do get a lot of beautiful warm sunny days in spring, however everyone knows that you need to finish up skiing by 11am and then not go back out to until it starts to freeze at 4pm so you don’t end up skiing in deep slopping glue. The ‘salted’ (firm) uphill and very much not salted (deep slop) downhill made for an interesting sprint, which I felt quite good in. My skis were not quick, and not because of the wax or ski
choice, just because I didn’t have great skis for those conditions. The 10k classic was my first of the season, but one that would be by far the toughest race course I have ever raced on. I was really pleased to get around and had a surprising amount of fun. Post Olympics I thought I would hang up the race skis for FIS races for the season, until my partner Valerio entered two Swiss Cup races in the next valley. The day before the races I figured I might as well race too and ended up 11th with 103 FIS points in the 5km Classic, happy with that. The next day I raced a 10k skate mass start and was very surprised to come in third with new best European distance FIS points of 81. The following weekend was the Engadin Ski Marathon. I raced in the night sprint where I was in third position till the last 100m when Holly Brooks from USA over took me and pushed me back to fourth. I had a fun time in the Marathon, a perfect sunny day with nice firm fast snow and a decent head wind and ended up 12th. That was the season that was. Quite the rollercoaster of emotions, but all in all the racing side was something I am happy with. See you on the snow.

SNOWBALL Express coaches have added an extra bus service for 2014, which will make travelling from Albury to Mt Hotham an easy experience. The service has been designed to compliment flight times from all airlines flying in from Sydney on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday and will commence from June 26. Owner of Alpine Spirit High Country Coaches, Chris Bonacci, said an opportunity to run the service from Albury presented itself and was too good to pass up. “Qantas Link pulled out of the Hotham Airport, so we saw the opportunity to add the service from Albury to Hotham along with our Melbourne to Hotham service,” he said. “We have had fantastic support from Mt Hotham Skiing Company, which has helped a lot.” Mr Bonacci said the Albury Snowball express will also be making a stop at the Albury train station. “When we were working out the schedules, all of the plane and train arrival times married up really well,” he said. The service will run once a day but Mr Bonacci said the

NEW CAMPAIGN: A new Snow Victoria marketing campaign will target new snow visitors across all six Victorian resorts. PHOTO: Charlie Brown Photography

2014 EVENTS EN
THIS winter season, for the first time, the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council is co-ordinating a Snow Victoria marketing campaign across all six Victorian resorts. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham have joined forces with the Council, Tourism Victoria, the other resorts and the alpine industry to target new snow visitors and convert snow players to skiers and snowboarders. Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council acting executive officer Alex Shilton said the campaign would also target existing skiers and snowboarders, creating sales and booking leads for the resorts to convert. “The Victorian alpine resorts offer a unique, an in-village snow experience that is perfect to share with friends and family,” Mr Shilton said. “When you stay in Victoria’s alpine villages, you really do leave the world behind. We’ve tried to capture this experience in the new marketing materials. “We are also highlighting the excellent food, beverage, retail, history and heritage on offer in the snowfields’ surrounding regional villages.”

Mr Shilton said the campaign would showcase the range of ski and snowboarding activities available onmountain, as well as restaurants that offer world-class food and wine, spas, shopping and a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. He said the campaign would involve digital, social media, print and public relations activity as well as a website featuring special deals and activities at each resort. The Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council is the key advocacy vehicle for the Victorian alpine industry. It works to grow the alpine industry through research, planning, promotions and coordination of development opportunities. Part of its role is to undertake advocacy, policy analysis, surveys and research on key issues relating to Victoria’s six alpine resorts, including Mt Hotham and Falls Creek. The campaign will launch this opening weekend, June 7-9. More information log onto www.snowvictoria.com and www.arcc.vic.gov.au.

Goebel takes reins at Birkebeiner
By GREG O’CONNOR SELF-confessed cross country skiing “gypsy” Ronice Goebel has been elected president of the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club for the next three years. Goebel has stepped up from a committee role to take the reins on the executive at the Mt Beauty based cross country club.
She replaces foundation member Helen L’Huillier, who has stepped down from the role after almost four decades with the club. The veteran of 21 Hoppets, who divides her time between Mt Beauty and Harrietville (“I’m a bit of a gypsy,” she says), will focus on junior development during her term as president. “The reason I got involved in the club was because
daughter got into racing,” Goebel said. “My main goal as president is to strengthen our junior program and improve access to coaching opportunities,” she said. “I want to build confidence around helping kids ski and to encourage more families to get involved.” Goebel is entering her second stint as president and
is also a member of the Ski and Snowboard Australia Cross Country Committee. She describes Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club as “the best race club in Australia”. “It’s a family orientated sport and it’s great to be around a club like this when you’ve kids learning how to ski,” she said. “We need to get away from the “bushwalking on skis”
mentality that some people and show the world what a great, healthy activity it is.” The club was formed in September 1977 when a small group of cross country ski enthusiasts met at the home of Paul and Helen L’Huillier to discuss the idea. Since then it has conducted many activities and programs for its members and other cross country skiers centred
on Falls Creek Ski Resort, Alpine National Park and Bogong High Plains. The club has produced many international athletes, including Sochi Olympians Esther Bottomley and Phil Bellingham. “We’re very proud of our club members and their incredible achievements on the world stage,” she said. “It was wonderful to watch.”
Happy days for season entry pass winner She nominated Mt Hotham as her favorite alpine destination. “Mt Hotham is definitely my favorite because it is a giant – it is big and wild and has a bit of something for everyone.” As a member of a lodge at Mt Hotham, Ngaire skis with other lodge members as well as her children, who have “grown up at the snow”. She also enjoys skiing at Falls Creek. “We have four children and I’m a grandmother of two, and my first grandchild has been to Hotham twice already,” Ngaire said. “He will be three in May and we’ll get him on skis for the first time.” “There is no choice in our family, ski or be left behind!” For an All Resorts Season Entry Pass visit www.mthotham.com.au or www. fallscreek.com.au.

NGAIRE Broomhall has spent every winter for the last 35 years on Victoria’s slopes, and will again this year. But this year she will enter the alpine resorts for free. Ngaire is the lucky winner of the 2014 All Resorts Season Entry Pass, valued at $600. It will give her free entry throughout the season to all six alpine resorts – Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain. Ngaire said she was very surprised to find out she’d won. “When I opened the letter, I was thrilled, I’d had a few other things go wrong during the week, but this time it was something good in the mail,” she said. “I’m stoked and would like to thank the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council for this prize.”

These boots were made for walking
DOLOMITES
WE all know how important a correctly fitted ski boot is to our overall skiing enjoyment. Obviously, how a boot is fitted relates to the performance - generally the more aggressive or competent the skier the closer or smaller the boot is fitted. This can make walking in ski boots uncomfortable. Walking around the village to catch a lift, taking the kids to ski school or hiking up the mountain to catch a better line to ski is a necessary part of the ski day. Walking in ski boots can be awkward to say the least. Thankfully, in recent years, we have seen more and more boot designers creating models with some walk modes. Some boots are built for the convenience of just wandering around the village while others have rubber under the middle section for more grip when hiking over ice, snow or rocks. The bonus feature is how easy they are to put on when in walk mode, however you must make sure the rear is re-engaged before skiing. A serious injury due to lack of boot management could put a real dampener on your ski season. For those who wish to explore the more remote areas outside of the resort there

The Dolomites Mountains of northern Italy are a revelation to Australians. Here, it is truly possible to ski as far as the eye can see! You and your friends or family can ski together, over long distances, and through many different ski resorts. It's the ski holiday of a lifetime. The variety of runs and challenges is almost daunting, with seemingly countless runs for every type of skier or boarder. You can ski
45–75km in a day without having to catch the same lift twice! And our guides always know the best places to ski, eat and see on any given day. The Dolomites offer a superb blend of skiing, food, culture and unspoiled alpine beauty. Best of all, it’s still undiscovered by Australians, and it’s all here in the unforgettable Dolomites.

They have a very different sole that is only compatible with the light weight alpine touring bindings. Taking into consideration the advancements in boot design and the new models available, my advice is not to be seduced by a wiz bang feature you think you want, but to use the sound advice of a professional boot fitter. An expert will be able to assess your needs, skill and shape of your feet to ensure you are in a model and shape of boot that suits you and your skiing style. All other features are a compromise. At Bumps we have more than 35 models on hand offer some sort of walk mode.
