Parties are ‘all talk’ VFF seeks out answers over ‘absent’ agriculture policies By JODIE FLEMING

SEASON PREDICTION:

It is likely to be a big year for both hay and silage as dairy farmers, livestock producers and traders try to re-fill empty hay sheds. According to Australian Fodder Industry Association’s industry development manager Caitlin Scholfield with good water allocations available there may also be a lot of summer crop activity, with particular focus on maize for both grain and silage. Locally, cereal hay crops are looking good and hay growers in the region are optimistic for an average to above average hay season in 2013. „ See more information in the Hay and Silage Feature on pages 23-26. THE Victorian Farmers’ Federation (VFF) has hit out at Labor and the Coalition saying it is sick of their declarations proclaiming the importance of agriculture that aren’t backed by policy detail. The lobby group sent out a statement pleading for both parties to “end the rhetoric and tell us what you’re going to do for farmers. VFF president Peter Tuohey said he is calling on both sides to give answers on agricultural policy, local government funding, research and development, drought support, food labelling, foreign investment and red tape. “Both the Liberal-Nationals Coalition and Labor lay claim to Australia as ‘Asia’s food bowl’, as one of the ‘pillars of our economy’ and as the source of new jobs and growth, Mr Tuohey said. “Yet we still don’t have the details we need on key agricultural policies from either the Coalition or Labor.

“I am calling on both sides to give us answers,â€? Mr Tuohey said. Regardless of the outcome of the federal election, Mr Tuohey said that both parties must do all they can to invest in the future of Australian agriculture. “Australian agriculture produces $46 billion of produce and directly employs 307,000 people with more than 1.6 million workers along the food and ďŹ bre supply chain,â€? Mr Tuohey said. He also said that the VFF and all Australian farmers need answers on how much funding Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott will put into agricultural research and development. “R&D is crucial to resolving the production challenges farmers and food processors face – from boosting phosphate uptake, drought and salt tolerant crops and pastures, new specialised food ingredients or new bio-control agents to attack agricultural weeds and pests,â€? Mr Tuohey said. „ Continued page 3

DUE to an “ongoing commitment to improve efficiency, productivity and cost competitiveness” Murray Goulburn Cooperative Limited (MG) has axed 72 positions across its processing facilities. According to a media statement released by the company, 38 positions at Cobram, 15 at Leongatha, eight at Kiewa, four at Edith Creek, four at Rochester and three at Koroit have been cut. MG general manager operations, Keith Mentiplay, said that while the company recognises that the changes are very difficult for those impacted, the company is doing everything possible to

support affected staff. “All affected staff will receive their full entitlements and will receive additional support with outplacement, career transitioning services, financial advice and counselling,” Mr Mentiplay said. “While these decisions are challenging, they are necessary to ensure MG remains competitive. “It is in the best interests of our supplier/shareholders, employees, communities, customers and consumers that MG remains a strong business, able to compete globally and deliver higher farmgate prices. “We continue to employ more than 2000 people at MG, mainly in rural and regional Australia and

contribute an estimated $6 billion to the Australian economy.” According to comments made by Sharman Stone (MHR, Murray) MG has had to pay $14 million to Labor’s carbon tax “which did not add one cent of additional production or better capacity to compete against imports or improve Australia’s export market”. “That $14 million carbon tax was equal to a loss of half a cent a litre on every farms’ milk cheque,” Dr Stone said. “Dairy farmers and the Co-op have also been hit be massive increases in refrigerant gas prices that also attract a carbon equivalent tax.” Dr Stone said that while the

Labor party had compensated other industries for the carbon tax, they walked away from food manufacturing and farmers. “The good news is that the $14 million carbon tax and refrigerant gas tax will immediately be axed if the Coalition is elected,” Dr Stone said. “Unfortunately, this will be too late for the regional people who have lost their jobs. “Our families whose jobs have gone from Cobram and Rochester will have paid a very heavy price for the Labor party’s refusal to understand that manufacturing goes way beyond car making plants on the seaboard.” weareonline! _______www.nenews.com.au

How disingenuous. Eighty or 90 per cent of what? “Connected” to what type of supply? Do these magic numbers include all of those who used to irrigate, and continue to farm on spur channels? Too many on the spurs have been given no option but to convert to piped stock and domestic water. You are hardly viable as a dairy or horticulture enterprise with a very limited stock and domestic supply only. Some on spurs have been made to dry their blocks off completely. I have personally pleaded for these cases with GMW, but to no avail. Communities need to know what percentage of landholders now on the spurs will be connected to the system with enough water to run a viable dairy or fruit farm? Cr Pankhurst and his GMW

fellow directors do not want to talk about the hundreds of farms on spurs. These properties once had the same land value and prospects as a farm on a main channel with the same water entitlement. And no, there is no compensation for those caught out with a farm on a spur. The answers to these questions are critically important for the region’s economy. We have already lost half the dairy farms in the Goulburn Murray irrigation district due to water sales to the environment during the drought. Is there to be another lot of farms forced out of production because of GMW’s sky high charges or because the farm happens to be on a spur? Just last Wednesday (August 21) Murray Goulburn Dairy Cooperative announced the loss of another 42 jobs from their factories at Cobram and Rochester. Come on Cr Pankhurst, do not parrot what GMW tells you, seek the truth, fearlessly. Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray

There is no competition in the water delivery system. It is worse than the Coles and Woolworth’s strangle hold. The irrigator has no other option but to buy their water through GMW, a state-owned monopoly and pay the prices. If they cannot pay, the interest rates charged on the debts are crippling and you will be hauled into court as quick as a flash with GMW legal costs thrown in. In particular, Cr Pankhurst said I am wrong to “infer that half the irrigation district and farmers are being shut down”. He concedes in his article that “while the original plan may have suggested that half the irrigation network would be rationalised or transferred to private ownership the reality is not the case.” He said I am wrong because “…it is anticipated that 80 or 90 per cent of landowners will be individually connected to the backbone.”

Stone says GMW directors don’t want to talk about farms on spurs

ON THE SPOT

SHARMAN Stone (MHR, Murray) has written a letter to the North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer responding to comments made in the August edition by regular contributor and Campaspe shire councillor Neil Pankhurst regarding the loss of irrigation water from the district. The following is Dr Stone’s letter: The Inside the Fence comments by Cr Neil Pankhurst, one of the new Victorian Government appointed directors of Goulburn Murray Water (GMW) were especially disappointing given he used to be a sometime champion of irrigator’s rights as they battled the disaster that is now GMW. GMW’s fixed fees and charges are escalating at such a rate that many irrigators are now seriously concerned about their capacity to pay. When you factor in that many also now are paying exorbitant energy bills where they once could rely on gravity, you can see why so many are angry and demanding value for money.

market duopoly. “Unfortunately for farmers, the Greens also oppose live exports, GM crops and a raft of policies that would dramatically raise the price of farm inputs – fuel and power, he said. The National Farmers Federation (NFF), like the VFF, has put a number of questions to both parties regarding their election priorities regarding the agriculture sector. Shadow minister for agriculture and food security John Cobb said that he has had “numerous meetings with the NFF regarding the Coalition’s policy for agriculture. “They are well aware of our intentions, we just haven’t provided them with a written response, Mr Cobb said. “The Coalition released its policy for agriculture in the second last week of the election campaign. “We will be releasing our policy this campaign as per our schedule, he said. The Labor govern-

ment released a 17 page response outlining the key areas of concern including its national food plan with minister for agriculture, fisheries and forestry Joel Fitzgibbon stating that Labor is focussed on taking advantage of the ‘dining boom’. “Federal Labor’s national food plan is a blueprint for growth and services a growing demand for Australian produce in Asia, Mr Fitzgibbon said. “We are on the record as working to grow Australia’s $30.5 billion food export market by 45 per cent by 2025. “Federal Labor will also invest $1 billion dollars over the next four years in rural research and development corporations to enhance innovation, productivity and profitability in the agriculture sector. “We have nothing to hide and look forward to working with industry to grow the value of Australia’s agricultural industry, he said. Mr Fitzgibbon added that Labor had already

announced that a foreign investment registry will be established and the areas of drought funding and support have been tackled, with agreements reached with each of the State governments. Mr Fitzgibbon said that Labor also supported the introduction of a grocery code. “I believe it is vital to give farmers and consumers a fair go and ensure they don’t get ripped off, Mr Fitzgibbon said. “The best chance for the code’s success is if all the players can reach agreement. “Government intervention should be a last resort, but if necessary I am prepared to lead the discussion, he said.

Wattle has been in flower for some time and buds are appearing on fruit trees. This seems to be an early spring, as years ago I remember the first wattle here was seen at the end of August. Even though we are experiencing a good, wet period we really want another wet year next year to catch up. There is still not a lot of subterranean water in the high country. Even the Hume and Dartmouth dams may overflow. Years ago floods occurred in October as a matter of course. Our rainfall for July was

114mm and up until August 23, we have had 77mm. With the transition towards spring, the workload starts to increase. Lambing is well on the way and crutching becomes essential as the spring flush progresses. Feeding off the crops comes to an end as they are closed up and fertilised. Calving is progressing

well and now the animal health and drenching programs need to be watched carefully. The constant bombardment of wild dogs has again become a problem from an area of crown bush that has been poisoned for the past two years. The electric fence and Maremma dogs are working well but we had to

extend the electric fence into a new area. A fortnight ago four dogs were shot here and a camera set up showed there are four more in the same area. The situation is quite hopeless, only one dogman and a part-time replacement for at least three dogmen that haven’t been replaced. This from a coalition government that is supposed to represent country views. A few days ago in the top end of Tallangatta Valley a farmer’s dog was savaged and killed by wild dogs. With the number of wild dogs that are about, when

will a human being suffer the same fate? Mary and I attended a forum at Charles Sturt University about food security. The candidates for the electorates of Indi and Farrer were involved. It is certainly a start, but needs a lot more discussion nationally. It was interesting to note that in the first debate between the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition that farming and agriculture barely got a mention. By the time this comes out the election will be over and hopefully we will get a good government.

WHAT a difference a month makes when it comes to rain. A total of 125mm for June and July – just right. Not too wet and not too dry. As I write this article, August is ticking along nicely with just 25mm over three weeks. It’s not the rain that has held up our spraying program, but the wind. Even with all the delays, we can ďŹ nally see the end of spraying, with Sulsa (liquid nitrogen and sulphur) to top up the canola crops left to be applied. Our TM Ag program has shown us what can really be achieved with improvements in soil biology through annual applications over the past ďŹ ve years. With no water logging evident

in the paddocks, we have seen no leaf disease. We have been able to lower up front fertiliser rates and we are now

using less liquid nitrogen and phosphorus than we have been used to. This is all on top of no pickle applied to the seed and no fungicides applied at sowing time, no need for any insecticides and only the possibility of an application of fungicide to be applied to a paddock sown to a variety of wheat that is highly susceptible to fungal diseases. Its application will depend entirely on weather conditions for the rest of the season. The local transport job has really slowed down over the past month and this has allowed me a bit of time to check up on some TM Ag users and collate their thoughts and results. I have seen some really good results in second year paddocks and these will only improve as

the season progresses. Some of the heavier clay-type soils take longer to respond than the lighter sold. We have spent most of this week traipsing around the countryside looking after three of the grandchildren while their parents have attended a conference in Sydney. It is good fun, but I reckon it is as hard as a day spent working around the farm. You tend to forget about all the little things that need to be done and that age is slowing us down. The home and away football season has ďŹ nished now and the ďŹ nals have begun. Go Blues and best of luck to all teams as they ďŹ ght it out to the end of the season.

Interaction with school students helps spread the word on the importance of dairy to the region NEIL PANKHURST, together with his wife Tamar, farm 200 hectares at Tongala milking a herd of predominantly jersey cows. College this year. Once again it was a very informative day and well worth attending. The range of speakers was broad and included such topics as food security, soil biology, farm energy efďŹ ciency, plastics recycling and effective communication. The presentation about on-farm composting was particularly interesting and promoted opportunities regarding waste management and reuse particularly relevant to dairy farms. Having large numbers of animals congregating in small areas on a regular basis accumulates large quantities of waste. Being able to collect and convert this into a beneďŹ cial product presents great opportunity. I have had a couple of interactions with school students during the past week that have

been fantastic. The ďŹ rst was participating in the “Principal for a dayâ€? program at Tongala Primary School. By coincidence, my visit was the day before the students were having a dairy awareness day and I was able to discuss with them my experiences as a dairy farmer and the importance of the industry to our region. It was great to hear their perspective and see the projects they were working on. The second was a group of students from a city school who were on camp in northern Victoria. I spent a couple of hours with them while they were at the Golden Cow dairy education centre in Tongala. While there they were participating in the art of cheese making as well as learning about the dairy industry.

It is part of a fantastic program run by the Campaspe Cohuna Local Learning and Employment Network. The Victorian minister for planning has just announced that he has signed off on the planning scheme amendments for the City of Greater Shepparton, and Shires of Moira and Campaspe that relate to the rural land use strategic work that was undertaken a number of years ago. This will result in greater certainty for rural communities and help protect farming land for future agricultural purposes. The availability of quality land at reasonable prices is one of the points of difference that our part of Victoria has. By the time you read this you may know the outcome of the federal election so I’m not going to quantify the result other than to say that I expect there will be a change of government. I think the decision to hold an election on the same weekend that Richmond was participating in the ďŹ nals for the ďŹ rst time in 12 years was a massive error in judgement.

ANOTHER month has own by and fortunately it has been a period that has seen some great pasture and crop growth. We have had 43mm of rain that has fallen on 10 of the 20 days so far in August. We are applying fertiliser after grazing and will be locking up selected paddocks for silage and hay production. Weed control has continued with particular focus on these paddocks to prevent spread through the fodder. The autumn herd is milking well and production is up about 12 percent on last year. The recent step up announced by Murray Goulburn was unexpected but welcome and will assist during what is always a challenging period for cash ow. The spring calving is well underway and going smoothly at present and I hope it continues. We are getting a good percentage of heifers, which is great but it can always change. Early born heifers have a number of beneďŹ ts including being AI bred and being older and therefore greater opportunity to grow before joining and entering the herd. I attended the annual Landcare farm forum which was held at Dookie

Financial survey has short term looking positive A RECENT survey commissioned by regional accountants RSM Bird Cameron has revealed some interesting insights into what business owners, including farmers are thinking at the coalface. According to ‘thinkBIG 2013’despite the doom and gloom, the survey found that businesses in general remain optimistic with 64 per cent of respondents expecting to grow in the next two months. When breaking down the numbers across the country, SME (small and medium enterprises) owners in regional centres are most optimistic about growth (69 per cent) followed by those in capital cities (65 per cent) and rural areas (57.5 per cent). More than half of SME owners (53 per cent) believe that interest rates will stay the same over the next 12 months. According to RSM Bird Cameron’s assistant manager Nadine Seymour a pleasing outcome from the

survey was that more than two thirds (68 per cent) of business owners undertake a formal planning process with just under half surveyed responding that they undertake this planning process on an annual basis. “There continues to be a focus on business planning as business owners understand the value of completing a plan,” Ms

FARMER TO FARMER Chris Kellock

Chris still a blow-in after 24 years GIVE our readers a quick snapshot of your farm in the Lake Rowan district. I am a grain farmer living at “Hillview” in the Lake Rowan district. I have lived here with my family since 1989, but am still considered a blow in by many of the locals that have been here for generations. We originally had mixed sheep and grain but in the past 10 years we have been more concentrated on grain growing. How long have you been a farmer? I have been a farmer for 40 years. I was originally from Dookie where I grew up and began my farming career after finishing school. Tell us about your family. I have three children with my wife Libby; Georgina, 22 and at university, Sam, 20 doing a gap year and Nick, 15 at school. Best advice or farming tip you have received? Don’t listen to your bank manager. Describe your perfect day. Every day is when you’re getting older, but I suppose the very best is when Collingwood wins. Go Pies! What is the best thing about being a farmer? Being your own boss, I suppose. What is the worst thing about being a farmer? The long hours you have to work. If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why? The Prime Minister, because you would have free first class air travel and an office with staff and car driver for the rest of your life.

Seymour said. “Not surprisingly, finding skilled labour continues to be a challenge, with 38 per cent reporting this as their main barrier to growth.” Other findings include one in three business owners (34 per cent) expect the proceeds from the sale of the business to be their primary source of retirement funds. Reliance on the sale of the business to fund retirement reflects the generally poor investment returns in the past few years. “Interestingly, more than half (54 per cent) were not aware of the tax concessions available upon the sale of their business,” Ms Seymour said. The survey also highlighted pitfalls in the retirement planning of business owners,” she said. If you have any questions, or would like a copy of the report and commentary, then contact Nadine Seymour on (02) 6041 3700.

AS a result of new state legislation relating to the welfare of pigs, Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE) in association with the Pig Health and Research Unit are providing training opportunities for those in the pig industry. The CertiďŹ cate III in pork production is a three-day workshop catering for owner-operators of piggeries and farm employees who wish to upgrade their skills in line with the new legislative requirements. Changes made to Victorian legislation (Welfare of Pigs – Victorian Standards and Guidelines) in response to the revised model code of practice for the welfare of animals-pigs (2007) requires stockpersons responsible for the care of pigs to be “suitably qualiďŹ edâ€?. The workshop will be delivered through a combination of classroom and practical sessions.

Attendees will be expected to participate in competency assessment activities as part of this training exercise. GOTAFE’s commercial manager agriculture education Leigh Kildey said people who have just entered the pig industry and who have no on-farm pig experience are welcome to attend the workshop. “People attending the training can complete a qualiďŹ cation at CertiďŹ cate III level should they choose to, in either pork production or agriculture,â€? Mr Kildey said. “The practical component of the training will be conducted onfarm at free range pork producers Kim and Brian Smith’s property at Greta Valley.â€? The workshop will address eight competencies of the pig industry stockperson skill set including: s COMPLYING WITH INDUSTRY ANI mal welfare requirements; s COMPLYING WITH INDUSTRY QUAL

ity assurance requirements; s IMPLEMENTING ANIMAL HEALTH control programs; s MOVING AND HANDLING PIGS s ADMINISTERING MEDICATION TO livestock; s CONTRIBUTING TO OCCUPATIONAL health and safety processes; s EUTHANISING LIVESTOCK AND s CARING FOR THE HEALTH AND WEL fare of pigs. Training will start on Wednesday, October 2 and ďŹ nish on Friday, October 4 at the GOTAFE Rural Industries Campus, Tone Road, Wangaratta at a cost of $350 (eligible persons who do not hold a qualiďŹ cation at CertiďŹ cate III or above) or $500 (ineligible persons who do hold a qualiďŹ cation at CertiďŹ cate IV level or above). Places are limited to 12 participants and include comprehensive course notes and some catering. For more information contact Harry Gillis on (03) 58332842.

How can legislation be passed without consultation?

DEPI offers advice on how to manage pugging THE Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) is advising farmers that due to the above average rainfall in July and August, the chance of pugging has increased and to manage their practices accordingly. Re-sowing a pasture is a cost associated with pugging events however the hidden cost associated with soil structure decline is not quantified and can be something a farmer is not often thinking about. According to the DEPI, the

chance of pugging increases when a paddock is grazed as the soil reaches saturation. The wetter the soil the weaker its strength. DEPI’s latest newsletter, Northern Ag News, states that hoof impressions in the paddock is a visible sign of pugging, but beneath the soil surface the pores responsible for soil drainage, aeration and root penetration have been damaged resulting in waterlogging.

Although it can be difficult to prevent pugging, there are numerous management practices that can be adopted to minimise the damage. The DEPI suggests that if a large proportion of your property is prone to annual pugging events, consider allocating a sacrifice paddock when the soils are saturated to reduce this hidden cost of soil structure decline. For more information contact Sue Briggs on (02) 6030 4510.

MARK Butler’s credibility as a Federal minister of environment must surely be questioned as he signed off on ‘Critical Endangered Reach of the Murray River’. This legislation is outside of the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MBDA) which doesn’t take into account the six years of negotiated outcomes and delivery of the MBDA process. It also has no terms of reference for a delivered outcome which is reminiscent of acts on the run by our current Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (for example the fringe benefits tax). The declared critical section is from the confluence of the Darling and Murray at Wentworth to the sea. How a minister can pass legislation without consultation or detail of science or projected outcomes is truly mind blowing. Is Mr Butler empire building or side shifting environmental jobs, or perhaps it is a way to shift power back to the Wentworth group (nothing to do with Wentworth Town)? After six years of negotiating by MBDA and the states it is a slap in the face to a bi-partisan authority created to resolve the very issue. Governments gain authority to rule on their policy. This piece of legislation is fraught with reinventing the wheel. Passed on Monday, August 5, 2013 it creates further delay and another arm of government to duplicate MBDA. The outlook is not defined and it will not create work outside of department natural resource management. Government should be recommending major infrastructure projects to

By BRUCE DIFFEY Waterwheel Traders benefit all Australians. Some merit would be in the high speed train between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane or a pipeline to take sea water from the gulf to Lake Eyre. History said that the Perth, Kalgoolie water pipeline could not be done. Water delivery systems are much improved in 2013 with $2.1 billion being committed to delivery improvement in the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District, which is part of the MBDA loss saving strategy to improve the Lower Murray. Further development of delivery of environmental water in South Australia is continually being discussed as Victoria holds three major resources - Hume, Dartmouth and Eildon dams. The delivery to Lower Murray some eight weeks from releases is a challenge to private and public assets without damage. All options should be thoroughly researched and put through the MBDA for merit. After three years of average and slightly above average rainfall for north east Victoria, the question should be revisited on how effective has the water for the environment been utilised? How much water in Lake Hume is Victorian as at September 2013? If Hume spills what is the environment water holders (or Federal Government’s) loss? Is this the best outcome for the Murray?

Has buyback been the success Mr Butler is proud of? How many farms are now unviable? Why are farmers not producing pears, apricots and peaches when Australia has the world’s best practices against imported fruit? Are we heading for a rural generation gap losing 75 years of Department of Primary Industry research and standards? The ability to produce is to know the varieties are improving and the net returns are diminishing. Less than 1000 agriculture graduates will be available to start work in the industry, but data says we need 4000 per year. We need the government to prioritise agriculture and make our standards apply to imports (some might argue a tariff barrier) but that argument was lost with the trade agreements signed between the nation’s food standards and the national livestock identification system which are now the new barriers to secure our markets. Mr Butler should not be able to sleep over his ‘Critical Endangered Reach of the Murray River.’ On a brighter and much more local issue, we see temporary water trading at $50 per megalitre, with NSW and Victorian Murray allocation only at 57 per cent but the Goulburn is 95 per cent. The question is why has Victoria such a low allocation when Hume is 92 per cent full and Dartmouth is 98 per cent full? Someone needs to revisit the formulas applied and provide an explanation to irrigators. The Bureau of Meteorology and Southern Oscillation Index are now expecting above average rainfall for north east Victoria.

Farm insurance and you EVEN if you are not insurance conscious or have a dislike of insurance you should still have business liability insurance according to Elders Insurance Wangaratta agent John Houghton. “I think public liability is the base of all insurance because if you have a bad liability claim, it can break you,” Mr Houghton said. And he added that if there is bodily

injury involved, some claims could be in the millions of dollars. The type of business you are conducting will naturally impact what kind of damages or injuries you could be held liable for. “If you own a café for instance you will be looking at public liability from a different angle to someone who owns and works on a farm,” Mr Houghton said.

“Café owners are at risk of giving someone food poisoning or having someone slip and fall in their shop, so this is what Elders Insurance will make sure you are covered for under your policy.” Farmers or tradesmen have a different set of circumstances that need to be taken into account when organising business liability insurance. PEARLED barley and organic spelt flour are two of Mirfak Pty Ltd’s popular products, particularly at this time of year when the weather is still quite cold and we are looking for some healthy, comfort food to keep us warm. According to Mirfak’s quality assurance manager, Anthony Murphy, pearled barley reaches the heights of its popularity in the cooler, winter months. “Barley is an ancient grain and is also one of the largest cereal crops in the world,” Mr Murphy said. “It has great health benefits due to its high fibre and protein content and it’s a great way to add to your daily wholegrain intake, as well as it containing many vitamins and minerals. “Our barely is Australian grown and processed on site at Mirfak in Benalla.” When cooked, pearled barley has a nutty flavour and great texture that

is similar to brown rice. The company’s organic spelt flour is always in high demand from large Australian bread manufacturers down to local bakeries. Grown in the rich cropping country of New South Wales, the grain is de-hulled and stone ground into flour at Mirfak. “Spelt has high levels of protein and is a good source of dietary fibre,” Mr Murphy said. “Our spelt is grown and processed organically and cooks into a deli-

cious and healthy bread. “We are now offering our organic spelt flour in smaller sizes for any bread or baking enthusiast to try,” he said. Mirfak has an extensive list of products that are manufactured and packaged on site. All products are Kosher and Halal certified, with a range of conventional, organic and gluten free options available. For more information go to www. mirfak.com.au.

Australia’s No.

Popular event celebrates 50th anniversary in 2013

1963 was the year the Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD) was born. Robert Menzies was prime minister, the first stage of the Ord River Scheme was completed, Gatum Gatum won the Melbourne Cup, Jack Brabham took out the Australian Grand Prix, and Margaret Court became the first Australian to win the ladies singles at Wimbledon. Out in the paddocks, farmers pulled tillage equipment with tractors rated at 50 to 60 horsepower compared to 200 to 400 horsepower plus in 2013. Headers came with a 3.6 metre front and today they are 12 metres and larger. Farmers drove five tonne trucks, now they hop behind the wheel of an air-conditioned semi-trailer or B-double. Farms have increased significantly in size. Most sons returned to the family farm in 1963 and the majority of young people gained employment locally. Farm machinery was largely Australian made, with International Harvester and Massey Ferguson manufactured in Melbourne,

Shearer and Horwood Bagshaw in South Australia, and Chamberlain in Western Australia. Founded as a one-day header school on the Henty showground in 1961, the first official Henty Machinery Field Days were held in October 1963. The event has evolved into the single, biggest agricultural event in southern Australia, with more than 800 exhibitors and 60,000 visitors. On the eve of the 50th anniversary field days, we acknowledge the Farmers and Settlers Association and Zone 7 of the United Farmers and Woolgrowers Association members, who provided equipment and countless hours in the early days. Their vision and foresight has taken Henty from that one-day header school to the world-class event it is today. This could not have been achieved without the many members who have given freely of their time over the 50 years, plus the hundreds of volunteers from regional organisations. At Henty, we take pride in providing a personal and professional service, and extend our thanks to our valued exhibitors for their support over the decades. I personally acknowledge the contribution of both office and site staff, and am proud to say the direc-

Machine of the year award draws record number of entries A RECORD number of 25 entries at the cutting edge of agricultural technology will line up before the judges in the prestigious Henty machine of the year award. The farmer’s choice award is presented to the most outstanding new piece of agricultural machinery exhibited at the Henty Machinery Field Days. It is judged by an independent panel of regional primary producers. In many cases, the machine has gone on to become a standard piece of equipment on farms. Judging criteria includes the machine’s purpose and suitability, scope of application, construction,

ease of maintenance and service, ease of operation and adjustment, availability of parts and overall value for money. Last year the award was won by Berrima Engineering’s BR1200 Rollerbar hay rake and highly commended was an automatic sheep handler entered by Olssen AgClipex. Machine of the year chairman Matt Bergmeier said the award was open to all machines on site released into the Australian market in the previous 12 months. This year’s judges are Lockhart grain growers Andrew Alexander and Mark Bowyer and Warren Scheetz of Culcairn.

tors, staff and committee members’ work as one great team. We strive to present a balanced program and wide range of exhibits for the public who attend year after year. Looking to the future, the HMFD board and senior staff are continually striving to take Henty to the next level. We have a balance of experience and youth to ensure a smooth transition to the next generation. Timely rain across southern NSW this autumn and winter has the countryside looking fantastic and showing potential for an outstanding season. Visitors to our 50th anniversary field days will be able to see the latest advancements in machinery, livestock and handling, as well as an historical display of three vintage headers and farm machinery from 1963. They will be able to marvel at the Fifty Years of Fashion parade at Country Lifestyle, or enjoy our anniversary DVD “Reflections of Henty”. Visitors can take in the 10th Henty Natural Fibre Fashion awards, watch the schools’ mower pull, sheep and yard dog trials and celebrity chefs at Farm Gate, and hear talented young rural musicians compete at Voices@Henty.

Family tradition for rural boy PROSPECTIVE students and their parents to Melbourne Grammar School will be able to get a first-hand account of the experiences the school has to offer at this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days. Melbourne Grammar School has a site in the ET Marquee at Henty where current student, Will Horsfall will be present to share his story of moving from Jindera to carry on a family tradition to take up as a boarder at the prestigious school. Sixteen years old might seem a little young to pack your bags and move out of home, but for Year 10 student Will, it was a chance to continue a family tradition – like his father before him. Will travelled to Melbourne to board at Melbourne Grammar School which he believes may have changed “a fair bit” since his father attended the school, having finished his schooling in 1977. “He got up to a fair bit of general mischief,” Will said.

155 years of regional boys boarding at Melbourne Grammar

FAMILY TRADITION: Will Horsfall is following in his father’s footsteps by boarding at Melbourne Grammar School.

“Mum always warns me not to follow his example. “Dad said that if they’d looked at his record they might not have let me in.” Like Will, boys from regional centres have been boarding at Melbourne Grammar School since 1858. Will shares the boarding houses with 120 other students, and he has enjoyed

making friends from different places within Australia and overseas. Will said he hasn’t experienced too many problems settling in as the boarding staff had been “amazing” and had done a good job of making the place feel like home. “When I first arrived, there was an induction exercise in the city,” Will said. “I didn’t know Melbourne well and I’ve never really used public transport before, so that really helped a lot.” As a keen sportsman, Will has thrown himself into the sporting life at Melbourne Grammar School by taking part in the school’s cricket and football teams. He has also been enjoying challenges within the classroom and has started thinking about his VCE next year.

Worth leaving home for…

“This semester I have the chance to study a few subjects that I hadn’t really studied before, like business management,” Will said. “There are a few subjects I’m interested in for VCE like geography and history, so it’ll be good to find out more about them. “There are so many opportunities here,” he said. Will is also pleased to be representing Melbourne Grammar School at this year’s Henty Field Days. “I’m really pleased to be going to Henty,” he added. “I went to Scots in Albury previously, so it’ll be great to be alongside them, representing my new school. “I’ll be excited to see a few familiar faces from near home. “I’m looking forward to telling them about the experiences I’ve had in Melbourne,” he said. Honda gives Aussie Pumps tick of approval HONDA has given Australian Pump Industries a huge compliment by recognising the company as a global partner. Aussie Pumps as it is known in the market is a leading manufacturer of engine powered pressure cleaners and fire pumps. Aussie fire chief pumps are sold all over the world including North America, South East Asia, Africa and Europe. According to Aussie Pumps operations manager, John Hales, a global partnership is a “huge compliment” for any manufacturer and symbolises a recognition that Australian engine powered products are world class. “Being recognised as a global partner by Honda is

a huge boost to the morale of all our staff and endorses the company’s quality principles,” Mr Hales said. “We compete with cheap third world manufacturers by focusing on top quality products powered by the

world’s best engines. “Honda is a joy to do business with as they understand what manufacturers want in an engine supplier. “The company works overtime to produce the right products for our ap-

plications and matches us for innovation, initiative and imagination.” Mr Hales added that Aussie Pumps uses Honda engines because of the international aftermarket service support programs.

REGIONAL PASTURE NEWS with Adam Sheedy

MARCO TURNIPS – A FLEXIBLE SUMMER FORAGE CROP Turnips are a popular summer feed option, providing bulk feed over a relatively short growing period. One such summer turnip is Marco tetraploid turnip. As a high yielding summer crop, it is hard to beat. At just 55-75 days (8-11 weeks) from sowing to grazing, Marco is the earliest maturing turnip on the Australian market. Its short growing season means less time out of pasture - potentially enabling you to get one extra grazing from the pasture. Two Marco crops in one season are possible, and it is also ideal for late sowings. Marco is a tetraploid, producing high quality, palatable forage; be it bulbs, or leaves. It has a high bulb to leaf ratio with large tankard shaped bulbs. The bulbs store especially well in the field . They can be left in the ground for an extra 3-4 weeks without losing yield or quality. The result is more flexible grazing management. And Marco is a relatively easy, hassle free summer crop to grow with good disease resistance, including resistance to bolting. Marco turnip seed is available from your local seed retailer or distributor.

Pet dental health is more important than you think DID you know that four out of five dogs and cats over the age of three years have some sort of dental disease that becomes more severe with age. Your pet’s teeth need to be checked regularly, as pets often will not show pain in the same way that humans may show pain. Even pets with sore gums,

an infected mouth or broken teeth will continue to eat, so you may not notice they have problems. Some dental diseases can lead to more serious problems such as illnesses related to the heart, liver and kidneys. The most common signs of dental disease in dogs or cats are bad breath, red or

inflamed gums, and stained teeth due to tartar and plaque. This is most commonly called periodontal disease, but dental fractures and abscesses are also very common in dogs and cats. Many vets will give their clients an opportunity to have their pet’s teeth examined for possible disease or damage, and to discuss how

you can help keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. Is your cat hiding a painful dental cavity? Many domestic cats suffer a special form of tooth cavity that is not suffered by dogs, but is very painful and may affect multiple teeth in the mouth. This condition is called Feline Oral Resorptive Le-

sion (FORL) and it is found in many cats over the age of five years. Scientists don’t yet understand why it happens. In this condition, specific cells called odontoclasts start to dissolve the tooth surface, eating away through the enamel, and dentine, eventually exposing the very sensitive pulp, and weakening the tooth so that it may even fracture. FORLS usually start at or just below the gumline, and the only sign that there may be a problem is some inflammation of the gum. However, these lesions can be excruciatingly painful, especially when they are advanced. Even under a general anaesthetic, cats can react when these cavities are probed. If your vet finds a lesion in the mouth that they suspect to be FORL then it can really only be confirmed under anaesthetic, and usually the affected tooth or teeth will require extraction. Cats that have one FORL will usually develop others over time. It is very important that these cats have a dental examination once or twice a year.

Kenmere vealer calves top the market again

North East Farmer, Page 21

KENMERE STOCK: Sons of Kenmere Chock can be purchased at Kenmere’s first on-property sale at “Moorak”, Holbrook on Friday, September 6.

Sons of sire up for grabs at September 6 sale Albury-Wodonga livestock agent and auctioneer Peter Ruaro said the Charolais cross calves had presented well to the domestic buyers in the yarding of 1850 head. Kenmere Charolais stud principal Ann-Marie Collins said the calves, aged 10 to 11 months had been finished on grazing oats while on the family’s Holbrook property. Sons of Kenmere Chock will be among the bull catalogue at Kenmere’s first on-property sale at “Moorak”, Holbrook on

Dog Action Plan. “The draft plan will soon be out for public consultation with the final plan to be ready by March 2014.” WPA’s plan seeds to improve national and state coordination and promote best practice standards across the varying state and regional approaches now in place. It addresses national priorities, drives innovation, builds partnerships and seeks to achieve broad scale outcomes. WPA’s annual review reflects the views of about 55,000 levy paying woolgrowers. It contains insights from all six state farming organisations and all of the main national organisations, and it identifies all of the key issues facing the industry. ACCORDING to the president of WoolProducers Australia (WPA) the biggest threat to Australia’s wool industry is the expansion of wild dogs across the country. WPA president Geoff Power said the dominant concern throughout the group’s 2013 annual review was the spread of wild dogs and the need to combat that threat. “The wool industry is facing a crisis not seen before in its history and urgent measures are needed to combat wild dogs,” Mr Power said. “It is clear that the wool industry may not survive unless something is done nationally. “WPA is actively working with our partner organisations to combat the wild dog menace and the destruction they cause. “I urge all our national industry partners to support WPA’s National Wild

We will start to come into the warmer months shortly, and will see pinkeye cases as the flies make their appearance known again. Pinkeye is a bacterial infection of the eye that causes inflammation, ulceration, and blindness in severe cases. The bacterium produces a toxin that damages the corneal surface of the eye. Predisposing factors can include dusty conditions, cattle yarded together, flies, bright sunlight and trauma to the eye from grass seeds etc. Flies are attracted to weepy/tearing eyes, and can spread the disease quickly within a mob. Infection causes lost production, young cattle can lose up to 10% of their body weight if affected by pinkeye. Severe infections untreated can lead to blindness in the affected eyes. There is a vaccine available to help reduce the

Be vigilant against Hendra virus HORSE owners are being urged to be vigilant after it was confirmed that there have been three Hendra virus outbreaks recently. Victoria’s chief veterinary officer Roger Paskin said these recent cases in Queensland and northern NSW have given rise to a heightened awareness of this disease, which was first diagnosed in Queensland in 1994. “Over 70 horses have died from, or been euthanised as a result of Hendra virus, which is transmitted to horses by some species of fruit bat,” Dr Paskin said.

“Ongoing surveillance by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries continues to show that no natural cases of Hendra have occurred in Victoria. “A ‘home-grown’ case of Hendra in Victoria is regarded as highly unlikely. “The most plausible reason of any future case of Hendra in Victoria is from a horse transported from northern NSW and Queensland,” he said. A vaccine against Hendra virus is available in limited quantities through specially accredited veterinarians.

THE Department of Environment and Primary Industries’ (DEPI) specialist livestock website, EverGraze, has had a facelift and is now up and running.

The site contains regional information packages, research outcomes and even more tools and training options for livestock producers. DEPI EverGraze project leader Kate Sargeant said for the first time both results and recommendations from EverGraze research were presented as tailored regional information packages. “Covering five different regions, the packages have recommendations about local soils, climate, pasture, livestock systems and key production and environmental issues,” Ms Sargeant said. “This information is then combined with fact sheets, decision support tools and training to help producers with on-farm decision making. “There is a new, userfriendly trouble shooting option allowing producers to click on a section to give them information

about common problems such as relevant strategies for filling the winter feed gap.” Ms Sargeant said in another first the website now hosts the findings from all six large-scale research sites from across southern Australia. “EverGraze has produced more than 300 resources, including fact sheets, case studies, conference and research papers and newsletters and this revitalised website will make it even easier for farmers to access this relevant and useful information,” she said. “Importantly, tried and tested tools such as calculators for stocking rates and pasture improvement are also still there.” EverGraze is a Future Farm Industries, CRC Research and delivery partnership led by DEPI. Supply of We have your herbicide Hay and Silage Needs Covered! to cease immediately THE Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) have cancelled the registration of 11 high volatile ester (HVE) products and two active constituents. The decision means that the supply of the cancelled 2,4-D HVE active constituent is to stop immediately and from Saturday, August 31, 2013 the supply of product containing 2,4-D HVE manufactured up to Wednesday, August 21, 2012 is to cease. Products that have already been purchased can be used up until August 31, 2014 under the same permit instructions that restricts use to winter only and under strict conditions. Use of these products after August 31, 2014 will be illegal. 2,4-D is an herbicide used to control weeds in crops, commercial and industrial areas, turf, forestry and waterways. There are now 220 registered 2,4-D products

in Australia, with sales representing about seven to eight per cent of all herbicide sales. Tight restrictions on the use of 2,4-D HVE products have been in place since 2006 while data about the environmental impact was generated under Australian conditions. The APVMA suspended registrations and label approvals of 2,4-D HVE products containing HVE forms on the basis of environmental concerns about off-target damage to nearby crops, vegetation and the environment due to its ability to easily evaporate and be carried long distances under certain conditions. The latest assessment of data from the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities determined the risks of the use of 2,4-D HVE products under the suspended label instructions are unacceptable and cannot be mitigated.

In brief Rejection of test weight rise GRAINGROWERS will write to every federal member to ask for their support in the fight against Grain Trade Australia’s planned test weight increases. GrainGrowers chair John Eastburn said the group had already established that there is no scientific basis for the change and that moving the standard from 74 kilograms per hectolitre to 76 kg/hL will mean growers risk being paid less for the same product. “More than 600 people have signed our petition against the increase and we expect this number to grow as our campaign continues,” Mr Eastburn said. “This issue clearly demonstrates there are serious problems with the way our industry is governed and we need support from our political representatives.” To read about the campaign go to www. graingrowers.com.au/media-centre/grain-growernews/471-graingrowers-opposes-test-weightincrease.

In brief AusGrain 2013 now available A new grain shipping contract that will increase the efficiency and protection of Australia’s grain exports has been tailored for Australian conditions. Grain Trade Australia (GTA) has developed the new Charterparty, known as AusGrain 2013, at the request of its members. The GTA committee met several times to develop an appropriate draft document, which was then provided to shipowners and brokers for initial feedback. Following several rounds of submissions from industry, the final Charterparty has been approved by the GTA Board and is now available for use by industry. It can be downloaded from the GTA website at www. graintrade.org.au.

September 2013

Be ready for this year’s silage season MOST farmers have exhausted their stocks of silage and hay this year, forcing many to buy-in hay at high prices and sometimes dubious quality to fill feed gaps. They would be grateful for a reasonable winter so far, as pasture growth has been relatively good. Farmers will need to grow, graze and/or conserve as much high-quality pasture as possible this spring. However, farmers will be looking to restock their fodder supplies this season and higher milk prices offer a glimmer of hope to help get on top of costs to date and fodder conservation costs for this spring. Hopefully the winter continues to be kind to us and we are heading into a silage friendly spring, good pasture growth and weather to favor early silage harvesting. Sticking to a suitable rotation length before now should see you with a good pasture wedge and this will spring board you into spring. If not, spring will start later for you and silage yields may be lower, requiring longer shut up to get reasonable bulk, which will most likely result in poorer regrowth. Below are a few things to consider from now on. Fertilisers - address the fertility of your paddocks destined for silage or hay, so pastures are not ‘leg roped’ by a nutrient deficiency, but also to avoid applying nutrients needlessly. Soil test in early spring and apply phosphorous, potassium and sulphur as needed in a mix with or without nitrogen (N). This year, seriously consider applying N to boost pasture growth for grazing and silage/ hay cuts. Applying N will actually encourage vegetative (leafy) growth more so than reproductive and stem growth. Apply about 100 kilograms (kg) (46 kg N) to 150 kg (70 kg N) urea. However, silage cuts should be at just past grazing height to produce best quality silage plus get fast, high-quality regrowth

while maintaining pasture density. The N will increase pasture growth rate so allow three to five weeks (depending on growing conditions). Don’t make the mistake of applying N to enable you to cut very high yields as silage quality will be down somewhat due to the dead material in the pasture base, but more importantly, regrowth will be less, slower and result in lower pasture density. The secret here is faster growth and some carryover of the N will also encourage faster and better regrowth. If no N is applied shut ups may need to be longer to achieve similar yields to the N applied paddocks. This will result in substantially more dead leaves and tillers in the base of the sward and much slower, lower yielding regrowth. This is drastically compounded if shut up is even longer, due to farmers chasing bulk versus quality. Contractors. Start talking to your contractor now so they can plan who to get to first, weather permitting. Discuss the logistics such as which area is likely to be cut and when it may be ready. Fix any access problems such as rough, narrow laneways and gateways. Discuss the ‘what if’s’ when the unforeseen happens. Also, have a strong agreement on payment details. An early payer will usually get the contractors attention and keep your harvest needs near the top of his list. If payment is an issue, be up front and stick to what is negotiated.

Contractors have large bills also. Equipment - it’s maybe obvious to many, but surprising how many bits of equipment need some sort of service, maintenance or repair too close to the start of harvest. Some parts may need to be ordered in and may take weeks, not days to arrive. Not good when chasing quality. Be proactive and replace suspect items now to avoid being let down in the middle of harvest. Silage additives - most silage additives (mainly inoculants but there are other types) from reputable companies have a place in today’s silage making. They are particularly useful for mown material that is still slightly too wet after two to three days wilting and where rain may be threatening. Apply an additive and harvest as soon as possible. By day three, quality is being lost anyway and if rained on, will drastically increase quality and dry matter losses. Note: The application rate is based on fresh weight of forage and slightly too wet forage is very heavy. Although additives are not necessary ideal harvesting conditions, they are usually financially beneficial because they encourage a faster, more efficient fermentation resulting in higher quality silage. Storage - have stack bases cleaned, if not cemented, and grade their surface to give a fall. Have plastic sheets and stretch wrap plastic on hand ensuring the latter is stored in a cool place till needed. Avoid rolls rolling around in ute/truck trays as the films are easily punctured. Even a small hole can lead to large silage, therefore milk income losses. Seal the stacks airtight. Achieve this by laying gravel/ sand filled socks around the stack perimeter. Tyres placed around the base are

not airtight and the silage wasted instead of producing milk, would have easily paid for the socks. Patch holes as soon as possible using silage specific tape. Before applying the tape, ensure the area to be patched is clean, cool, and dry and apply color tape to similar color film. Consider the new oxygen barrier (OB) type films that are available in one-step or two-step systems. The OB film is at least 20 times more impervious to oxygen moving through the film than the traditional white/black films. Safety - be very careful of machinery operating nearby and watch out for operators with their minds on the phone and not the machine. Loaded carts and balers on hillsides are very heavy and may not need much of a hole to flip them over, nor to loose traction when heading down slopes. When on a main road, assume the person in the car behind has not seen your turning indicators or flashing light on top of the tractor. I have heard of too many near misses and accidents from this oversight. When working at night, be very mindful of blinding lights in the eyes from approaching vehicles in the paddock or the stack. Many accidents happen at night due to tiredness and dangerous situations not seen, such as dropping a wheel over the stack edge, etc. Keep children well away from all operating machinery and activities. Consider your neighbors. Try to place the storage site well away from a neighbors’ house, if possible. Following good silage making principles will result in sweet smelling silage and less cause for grief. Trying to keep the storage site cleared of smelly mud/silage mixes and spoiled (rotting) silage waste will also help out here.
